Penning Her Way To Power: Feminism And Writing In Saudi Women’S Efl Classrooms, Dania Ammar

Intersections: Critical Issues in Education

In this literature review, I highlight the need for investing in the second-language (L2) writing classroom as a platform for critical literacy. Namely, I hone in on the context of L2 women writers in Saudi Arabia. As I argue for a feminist pedagogy for teaching L2 writing in this context, I emphasize writing as a tool of “languaging,” define feminism, and explain its significance in relation to education, women rights, and waves of social change in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, situating this paper in the field composition, I survey the development of concepts relevant to empowerment through writing in feminist first-language …

Understanding Intersectionality To Promote Social Justice In Educational Leadership: Review Of Jcel Cases, Ericka Roland May 2018

Understanding Intersectionality To Promote Social Justice In Educational Leadership: Review Of Jcel Cases, Ericka Roland

Intersections: Critical Issues in Education

This qualitative study examined how intersectionality is treated in the Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership’s (JCEL) 2016 special issue. Guided by intersectionality and intersectional pedagogy framework, a qualitative content analysis (QCA) was conducted on all parts of six pedagogical cases. There were three major findings: (1) an additive approach was taken, (2) there was an unclear connection between theory and practice, and (3) there was minimal attention given to the role of agency in social justice leadership. Pedagogical cases rooted in the theoretical framework of intersectionality prompts social justice leadership that uncovers structural and systemic power relations to enact …

Pedagogical Examination Of Alternative Keys With Sel-Strategies (P. E. A. K. S.): An Examination Of Social Emotional Learning Pedagogy, Rezenia Wilson May 2018

Pedagogical Examination Of Alternative Keys With Sel-Strategies (P. E. A. K. S.): An Examination Of Social Emotional Learning Pedagogy, Rezenia Wilson

Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership Dissertations

Twenty-first century schools are increasingly recognizing the need to nurture students’ social and emotional skills (The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning-CASEL, 2015). There is a developing base of evidence that well-orchestrated, systematically-implemented social and emotional pedagogy can positively affect a wide range of social, emotional, and academic achievement levels (Bar-On, 2006; Bridgeland, Bruce, & Hariharan, 2013; CASEL, 2012; Durlak, Weissberg, Dymnicki, Taylor, & Schellinger, 2011; Elias et al., 1997; Goleman, 1995; Mayer, Salovey, Caruso, & Sitarenious, 2001; Zins, Bloodworth, Weissberg, & Walberg, 2004). Empirical research studies have also shown that systematic, ongoing pedagogical practices to further these initiatives …

Exploration Of New Complexity Metrics For Curriculum-Based Measures Of Writing, Kyle Wagner, Alex Smith, Abigail A. Allen, Kristen L. Mcmaster, Apryl L. Poch, Erica S. Lembke

Special Education and Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Researchers and practitioners have questioned whether scoring procedures used with curriculum-based measures of writing (CBM-W) capture growth in complexity of writing. We analyzed data from six independent samples to examine two potential scoring metrics for picture word CBM-W (PW), a sentence-level CBM task. Correct word sequences per response (CWSR) and words written per response (WWR) were compared with the current standard metric of correct word sequences (CWS). Linear regression analyses indicated that CWSR predicted scores on standardized norm-referenced criterion measures in more samples than did WWR or CWS. Future studies should explore the capacity of CWSR and WWR to show …

Gender Opposition To The Stylistic Method Of Antithesis In English And Uzbek, Zarina Rahmatiloevna Gulyamova

Central Asian Journal of Education

Recently in linguistics the concept "gender" became especially actual. It is known, that the gender role of the man or the woman was fixed to each individual in a society. On their basis general concepts about features of behavior of men and women, about reactions expected from them and actions, about comprehensible only for men or only for women activity - kinds differently later were generated, in public consciousness gender stereotypes which concern language, social, cultural, educational, scientific and other spheres of ability to live of the person were generated.

Creative Democracy, Communication, And The Uncharted Sources Of Bhimrao Ambedkar’S Deweyan Pragmatism, Scott R. Stroud May 2018

Creative Democracy, Communication, And The Uncharted Sources Of Bhimrao Ambedkar’S Deweyan Pragmatism, Scott R. Stroud

Education and Culture

This article explores the contours of the Indian pragmatist Bhimrao Ambedkar and his reconstruction of Buddhism in the 1950s. As a student of John Dewey at Columbia University, young Ambedkar was heavily influenced by the pragmatist ideas of democracy and reconstruction. Throughout his life he would continue to evoke Dewey’s words and ideas in his fight against caste injustice in India. This article explores the possibility that Ambedkar could have been influenced by Dewey’s work, “Creative Democracy—The Task Before Us.” In exploring the intriguing evidence that points toward such an influence, Ambedkar’s The Buddha and His Dhamma emerges as a …

Considerations In Promoting Parent And Family Involvement, Staci M. Zolkoski, Donna M. Sayman, Calli G. Lewis-Chiu

Diversity, Social Justice, and the Educational Leader

It has been recognized for decades that parent and family (PF) involvement is a vital component of students' educational experiences. Moreover, PF involvement is identified as an important protective factor for students. Thus, school administrators and educators understanding and encouraging positive relationships between families and schools may be one way to promote academic, social, and emotional success for youth throughout their lives. The purpose of this paper is to examine the literature on PF involvement and delineate a proposed model of PF involvement to foster resilience in children and youth.

Ethics In The Field: Notes On Making Environmental Ethics More Inclusive, Charles W. Wright May 2018

Ethics In The Field: Notes On Making Environmental Ethics More Inclusive, Charles W. Wright

Headwaters

Students enrolled in my PHIL 322: Environmental Ethics should finish the semester with deep ethical reservations about the way of life they have taken for granted for most of their lives and with a measure of resolve to change some of their habits and life expectations. This essay first discusses how pursuit of these pedagogical goals already has resulted in curricular changes in the direction of greater inclusivity. I then review compelling reasons for further changes brought forcefully to my attention during my participation in the May 2016 Mellon Grant sponsored workshop on inclusive pedagogy, led by philosophy Prof. David …

Coarticulation In Two Fricative-Vowel Sequences Of Latin American Spanish, Jeff Renaud May 2018

Coarticulation In Two Fricative-Vowel Sequences Of Latin American Spanish, Jeff Renaud

Celebration of Learning

Dialectal surveys of Latin American Spanish (Perissinotto 1975, Resnick 1975) describe three main possible pronunciations for fu (fuego 'fire') and fo (foco 'focus') sequences: faithful [f], velarized [x], and bilabialized [ɸ], in order of frequency. While the velar realization has received phonetic and theoretical consideration (Lipski 1995, Mazzaro 2011), little is understood about the voiceless bilabial fricative [ɸ] in Spanish. This paper describes a three-part production study to uniformly account for the unfaithful velar and bilabial realizations.

Mazzaro (2011) explains the velar [x] variant by arguing that, given the acoustic similarity of, e.g., [fu]/[xu], listeners misperceive a speaker's …

Writing//Posthuman: The Literary Text As Cognitive Assemblage, Katherine Hayles N. May 2018

Writing//Posthuman: The Literary Text As Cognitive Assemblage, Katherine Hayles N.

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Posthuman studies have developed in many different directions, which may be charted according to the role they assign to computational technologies. Arguing that computational media have been highly influential in the spread of posthumanism and its conceptualizations, this essay illustrates the importance of digital technologies for writing in the contemporary era. Humans and computational media participate in hybrid interactions through cognitive assemblages, networks through which information, interpretations and meanings circulate. Illustrating these interactions are analyses of two works of electronic literature, Sea and Spar Between by Nick Montford and Stephanie Strickland, and Evolution by Johannes Heldén and Hakan Jonson.

Music And Ireland's National Identity: Connecting Folk Music And Cultural Theory Through Emotional Sociology, Alexandra Habecker May 2018

Music And Ireland's National Identity: Connecting Folk Music And Cultural Theory Through Emotional Sociology, Alexandra Habecker

University Honors Theses

Music has been a crucial component of every major social movement in history. Though studies have shown that music and other areas of the arts are a product of the surrounding world in response to their own historical context, I propose that music can and has directly impacted society through the effects of music on the human emotional response. By looking at cultural theory through a musicological lens and using Ireland's rich and rooted musical culture as an example, this thesis suggests that with further research into the connection between music and emotions, along with expanding interest in the growing …

Notes From A Native Son And Other Stories, Jacob K. Warren May 2018

Notes From A Native Son And Other Stories, Jacob K. Warren

University Honors Theses

My goal as a writer is to contribute to the growing number of Native voices in contemporary memoir, as well as to continue a longstanding tradition of Indigenous creative nonfiction. I also hope to assist in the important work of ushering the voices of First Nations people out of the linguistic prisons of the past and into present-day discourse. In doing so, I will underscore the importance behind the demand for Native spaces in academia and politics. Using memoir, I’ll show some of the ways in which abusive social structures replicate themselves on smaller levels like one's family, and demonstrate …

Stop Labelling Us: Queer Futures For Film Criticism, Aria N. Ramus May 2018

Stop Labelling Us: Queer Futures For Film Criticism, Aria N. Ramus

University Honors Theses

Queer cinema exists as a form of subversive storytelling, where ambiguity is utilized to tell non-normative narratives. Mainstream film criticism, however, finds itself ill-equipped to address the complexities of queer films. Film criticism seeks clarity in films that are intentionally ambiguous, and in doing so runs the risk of misrepresenting the film and its topics. Through the use of a case study, queer cinema is evaluated as a tool for developing mainstream criticism. XXY (2007) and El niño pez (2009), written and directed by Argentine filmmaker Lucía Puenzo, tell coming-of-age stories of queer youth. Their stories and narrative techniques can …

The Semiotics Of Wine Labeling: A Study Of Millennial Perception, Abby Williams May 2018

The Semiotics Of Wine Labeling: A Study Of Millennial Perception, Abby Williams

University Honors Theses

Research shows that Millennial customers rely on a front package label as their primary purchase factor when determining a product's worth, but there is little research as to what each element on a label communicates to a customer, and specifically, to a Millennial customer.

Traditional semiotic analysis uses a qualitative approach to discover how attitudes and perceptions of brands are communicated to the consumer. The semiotic method looks to the subconscious consumer interpretations of emblems, icons, fonts, colors and other visual graphic components of a brand to uncover how different elements communicate to an individual.

It is also known that …

Evaluating Mobile-Based Educational Adventure Games For Language Learning, Deana Jackson May 2018

Evaluating Mobile-Based Educational Adventure Games For Language Learning, Deana Jackson

University Honors Theses

Despite there being many gamified apps, such as vocabulary trainers, on the market for language learning, there are not many that use communicative and task-based methods for instruction (e.g. adventure games). Well-designed games are intrinsically motivating to play even if they are long and challenging, and as Gee (2007) pointed out, facilitate learning. The Goethe Institute, a German language and culture institute, has tapped into the allure of adventure gaming and combined it with the benefits of communicative language learning. This study examines the strategies of these mobile-based adventure games for learning German and evaluates the principles of game design, …
