Aftermath: Photographs After 9/11, Ground Zero, And The Myth Of American Exceptionalism, Victoria M. Arredondo May 2018

Aftermath: Photographs After 9/11, Ground Zero, And The Myth Of American Exceptionalism, Victoria M. Arredondo

University Honors Theses

The events of September 11th, 2001 rattled the U.S. public and left them in need of direction when approaching death and grief. Thousands of photographs were taken on 9/11, however, not many were taken of the construction occasionally referred to as "ground zero." In this project, it is demonstrated just how the photographs in two individual projects Aftermath: World Trade Center Archive by Joel Meyerowitz and Aftermath: Unseen Photos by a New York City Cop by John Botte, both perpetuate the myth of moral exceptionalism in the United States post 9/11. Using ideas put forth by Roland Barthes …

The Impact Of Domestic And Foreign Forces On Guatemala's Social Services, Brooke Marie Reichert

University Honors Theses

This thesis will look at the socio-political history in both domestic and international contexts to analyze the development of Guatemala. This work will evaluate the positive and negative impacts of foreign aid and intervention in the development of Guatemala. International development theory is applied to this case study to better understand the current health and education crisis that intensified after the Cold War era. This thesis will serve to answer the following questions: how have internal and external forces shaped, beneficially and negatively, the current state of human development and social services in Guatemala? Why has Guatemala, a resource rich …

Growing Against The Grain: Confronting White Supremacy And Patriarchy In Gardens In The Dunes, Andre Cole May 2018

Growing Against The Grain: Confronting White Supremacy And Patriarchy In Gardens In The Dunes, Andre Cole

University Honors Theses

Gardens in the Dunes is a novel from 2008 by indigenous author Leslie Marmon Silko about gardening, family, and the looming threat of White, male hegemony in the late 1800's. By analyzing the characters and the garden settings, a pattern of various resistances and oppositions to this colonial violence emerges that I believe is useful for a case study in making meaningful strides in confronting contemporary support for white patriarchy.

Return To Roman Jakobson: On The Linguistic Source Of "Literariness", Wei Feng May 2018

Return To Roman Jakobson: On The Linguistic Source Of "Literariness", Wei Feng

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

It is necessary to take the linguistic source of "literariness" into account when we discuss the controversy concerning the term itself. Jakobson brought forth the concept of "literariness" for the first time in 1919. After that, the relation between literature and linguistics always played a leading role in his academic thoughts. He was also the first to use the notion of "structuralism" in 1929 and became a pivotal figure in the adaptation of Saussure's structural analysis to literary theory. Not only did he explore his precursor's functionalist ideology, but also expanded the social significance and humanistic values of linguistic studies. …

Finnish Education In The 21st Century: Paradoxes And Visions, Carol A. Burg May 2018

Finnish Education In The 21st Century: Paradoxes And Visions, Carol A. Burg

i.e.: inquiry in education

Since the publication of the 2000 PISA results highlighting Finland’s school children ranking #1 in the world for reading, and #3 for mathematics and science, fascination with Finland’s educational system has piqued the interest of educational researchers worldwide. Researchers have been captivated by the paradoxes of the Finnish education system: teach less, learn more; test less, learn more; and educational equity through growing diversity (Sahlberg, 2015). Starting with the 2012 PISA results and continuing with the 2015 scores, Finnish educators are now concerned about the downward trend in the data, with their students losing ground in reading, math and science …

The Curriculum Process - Case Turku In Finland, Ulla Soukainen May 2018

The Curriculum Process - Case Turku In Finland, Ulla Soukainen

i.e.: inquiry in education

In Finnish early childhood education and care, many changes have been occurring in recent years. The most important change has been the definition of the goals of early childhood education and care in the Act on Early Childhood Education and Care. Pursuant to that Act, national core curriculum for early childhood education and care is a national regulation. What does all this mean to a person who works in early childhood education and care? How is that core curriculum implemented at the local level? And how is that local curriculum formed? The focus of this article is the curriculum process …

Making A German-American Place: Davenport, Iowa, 1836-1918, Benjamin E. Bruster May 2018

Making A German-American Place: Davenport, Iowa, 1836-1918, Benjamin E. Bruster

Celebration of Learning

This study examines the impact of German-Americans in the creation of Davenport and Scott County, Iowa from 1836 through 1918. Like cities many other 19th century places in the American interior, Davenport and Scott County direly needed people to settle it, build its infrastructure, develop its economy, and contribute to growing social and political life. Conveniently, Davenport and Scott County boosters’ desires occurred simultaneously with rampant pauperism, political, ideological, and religious revolutions, economic redundancy, and widespread dreams of rebirth in Germany. These conditions produced an unprecedented migration from Germany to Davenport and Scott County in the second-half of the …

Adventist Education In An Anti-Modern World: Challenge And Opportunity, John Wesley Taylor Ph.D. V May 2018

Adventist Education In An Anti-Modern World: Challenge And Opportunity, John Wesley Taylor Ph.D. V

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

Certain tenets of anti-modern thought clash with basic Christian assumptions. Consequently, Christians may not agree with the full scope of the anti-modern position – such as its relativism, fragmentation of knowledge, and rejection of religious doctrine. Such premises can ultimately lead to conclusions far removed from those of a Christian worldview. Nevertheless, while Christians cannot surrender the non-negotiable truths of their faith, they must seek to truly understand anti-modernism and its endeavor to address crucial issues in society.

Stirred by the anti-modern paradigm, for example, contemporary educators have raised valid concerns regarding educational practice – the role of community, the …

The Composer, The Musicologist, His Wife, And Her Lover: On Lacan’S Relevance To Music, Thomas Reiner May 2018

The Composer, The Musicologist, His Wife, And Her Lover: On Lacan’S Relevance To Music, Thomas Reiner

Directions of New Music

This paper asks what it is to write about music. When we ask students or colleagues to write about music are we asking them to describe music structurally, or to cope with music’s ever-shifting signifieds? The paper attempts to answer this question by clarifying the relationship between composition, musicology, and music “itself” by way of a Lacanian reading of Peter Greenaway's film The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover. Lacan’s existential concepts of the Imaginary, the Symbolic, and the Real are first introduced in relation to music with reference to music by Hans Werner Henze, Lady Gaga, …

The Dynamics Of Higher Education In Countries Experiencing Ethnic Conflict, Lillian Nellans

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

My thesis investigates how higher education institutions influence and interact with students and professors, policymakers, the economy, and the general population following ethnic conflict. I use a mixed-method comparative analysis of universities in Kosovo, Sri Lanka, Sudan, and Turkey and an in-depth case study of Kosovo to analyze the dynamics of higher education in post-conflict environments. The majority of my research is drawn from personal interviews conducted between June 2017 and October 2017. I interviewed students, alumni, faculty, and administrators from Kosovo’s three most prominent universities: the University of Pristina, the University of Mitrovica, and the Rochester Institute of Technology …

Assessing Working Memory In Mild Cognitive Impairment With Serial Order Recall, Sheina Emrani

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Working memory (WM) is often assessed with serial order tests such as repeating digits backward. In prior dementia research using the Backward Digit Span subtest (BDT) only aggregate test performance was examined. The current research tallied primacy/ recency effects; out-of-sequence transposition errors; perseverations and omissions to assess WM deficits in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods: Memory clinic patients (n= 66) were classified into three groups - single domain amnestic MCI (aMCI), combined mixed domain/ dysexecutive MCI (mixed/dys MCI), and non-MCI where patients did not meet criteria for MCI. Serial order/ WM ability was assessed by …

Hush, Abigail Jane Agersea May 2018

Hush, Abigail Jane Agersea

University Honors Theses

In the midst of my freshman year of college in 2013, I was abducted and sexually assaulted while attending a party in my dorm building. I was taken away from my home under the influence of a date rape intoxicant, vanished from all consciousness and whisked into the darkness of that cold October night in Portland, Oregon. Fortunately, with the help from various doctors and two years of specialized rehabilitation, I have renewed my strength in mental stability, professionalism and verbal confidence to tell my story and establish a sense of closure for my own victimization.

To achieve this closure, …

Contingent Narratives: Exploring Facets Of Cross-Cultural Awareness In An Experiential Global Education Course, Nicholas Bardo May 2018

Contingent Narratives: Exploring Facets Of Cross-Cultural Awareness In An Experiential Global Education Course, Nicholas Bardo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This narrative inquiry explores the process through which a combination of coursework, field experiences, and experiential classroom activities engaged pre-service teachers with opportunities to expand their perspective upon culturally normative conceptions of values, beliefs, and worldview. Due to the current racial and ethnic demographic gap separating the professional ranks of the teaching force and the increasingly diverse population of students in the United States, cross-cultural awareness is imperative for both teacher education programming and membership in a culturally pluralistic society.

Drawing on multiple data points, the narrative illuminates the participant voices, context, and dynamic social process of teaching and learning. …

The Pious And Political Networks Of Catherine Of Siena, Aubrie Kent May 2018

The Pious And Political Networks Of Catherine Of Siena, Aubrie Kent

University Honors Theses

This project looks at the career of St. Catherine of Siena and argues that without the relationships she had with her closest followers, who provided social connections and knowledge of the operation of political power, she would not have been able to pursue as active or wide-ranging a career. The examination of Catherine’s relationships, the careers of her followers, and the ways she made use of this network of support, relies mainly on Catherine's extant letters. Most prior research on St. Catherine focuses on her spirituality and work with the papacy, which leaves out the influence of her local, political …

Exploring The Association Of Victimization And Alcohol And Marijuana Use Among American Indian Youth Living On Or Near Reservations: A Mixed Methods Study, Lindsay Nicole Merritt May 2018

Exploring The Association Of Victimization And Alcohol And Marijuana Use Among American Indian Youth Living On Or Near Reservations: A Mixed Methods Study, Lindsay Nicole Merritt

Dissertations and Theses

Adolescent substance use research has yet to consider victimization as a potential risk factor contributing to alcohol and marijuana use among American Indian youth living on or near reservations, despite the presence of traumatic experiences, childhood adverse events, racism, and discrimination. Contribution to this lack of attention may be due to little being known about American Indian youth victimization. Even less is known about its association with alcohol and marijuana use in general and for those youth living on or near reservations in particular.

This study utilizes mixed methods with a nationally representative sample of American Indian youth living on …

Discipleship As Means To Reinvent Higher Education, Alan Parker, D.Th. May 2018

Discipleship As Means To Reinvent Higher Education, Alan Parker, D.Th.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

This paper exams the purpose of Adventist Higher Education and how it can be achieved. It suggests that the purpose of Christian education is to transform believers into the image of Christ. It contrasts contemporary Christian education with Ellen White’s vision of education and suggests that current models of education, especially in General Education, fall far short of this ideal. The paper concludes that character development, the transmission of strong biblical values and the holistic development of the overall person should be the purpose of Adventist higher education. The paper then suggests that the most effective way to accomplish this …

The Role Of Police Officer Race/Ethnicity On Crime Rates In Immigrant Communities, Joselyne Chenane, Emily M. Wright May 2018

The Role Of Police Officer Race/Ethnicity On Crime Rates In Immigrant Communities, Joselyne Chenane, Emily M. Wright

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Few studies have examined the role of city police officer racial/ethnic representation on violent crime in immigrant neighborhoods. Yet police officer race/ethnicity might play a significant role in bolstering or weakening the relationship between immigration and violent crime rates. Researchers have posited that increasing the representation of minority officer would be an important avenue for making police departments more accountable to the communities they serve. The current study contributes to existing research by using national (i.e., 89 cities and 8,980 neighborhoods) data on violent crime from large U.S. cities. We examine the relationship between immigration, violent crime rates, and minority …
