The Holographic Principle Of Mind And The Evolution Of Consciousness, Germine, Mark May 2018

The Holographic Principle Of Mind And The Evolution Of Consciousness, Germine, Mark

Journal of Conscious Evolution

The Holographic Principle holds the information in any region of space and time exists on the surface of that region. Layers of the holographic, universal “now” go from the inception of the universe to the present. Universal Consciousness is the timeless source of actuality and mentality. Information is experience, and the expansion of the “now” leads to higher and higher orders of experience in the Universe, with various levels of consciousness emerging from experience. The brain consists of a nested hierarchy of surfaces which range from the most elementary field though the neuron, neural group, and the whole brain. Evidence …

Lifting The Fog Of Targeting: “Autonomous Weapons” And Human Control Through The Lens Of Military Targeting, Merel A.C. Ekelhof

Naval War College Review

Military targeting practices should be the core of any analysis that seeks a better understanding both of the concept of meaningful human control within a context of increasingly autonomous weapons, and of what human-machine relationship we require.

Loob As Relational Interiority: A Contribution To The Philosophy Of The Human Person, Albert E. Alejo Sj, Julia E. Riddle May 2018

Loob As Relational Interiority: A Contribution To The Philosophy Of The Human Person, Albert E. Alejo Sj, Julia E. Riddle

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

This paper is a meditation on the Filipino philosophical concept of ‘loob.’ Literally, loob means ‘inside’ or ‘interior,’ but within the horizon of the Tagalog language and the culture that has nourished my interior conversation, my social relation, and my ecological conversion, loob has meant so much more than a circumscribed space, or a container of discursive baggage, or an object for academic project. As the paper reveals, loob has an inner structure that consists of the abot-malay (ambit of consciousness), the abot-dama (ambit of feeling), and the abot-kaya (ambit of strength). From its literal image to its spatial metaphor …

The Privileges And Immunities Of Non-Citizens, R. George Wright May 2018

The Privileges And Immunities Of Non-Citizens, R. George Wright

Cleveland State Law Review

However paradoxically, in some practically important contexts, non-citizens of all sorts can rightly claim what amount to privileges and immunities of citizens. This follows from a careful and entirely plausible understanding of the inherently relational, inescapably social, and essentially reciprocal nature of at least some typical privileges and immunities.

This Article contends that the relationship between constitutional privileges and immunities and citizenship is more nuanced, and much more interesting, than usually recognized. Crucially, allowing some non-citizens to invoke the privileges and immunities of citizens often makes sense. The intuitive sense that non-citizens cannot logically claim the privileges or immunities of …

Rates Of Developmental And Behavioral Screening Of Young Children: Implications For Health Care Policy And Practice, Shirley Berger May 2018

Rates Of Developmental And Behavioral Screening Of Young Children: Implications For Health Care Policy And Practice, Shirley Berger

Dissertations and Theses

Background: The skills and capacities developed during early childhood are the foundation for a child’s future academic functioning, economic productivity, and lifelong health and mental health. When young children have developmental delays or disabilities, early identification and intervention lead to better outcomes; however, only a minority are identified before school entry. Primary care is an important setting for identification of developmental and behavioral conditions as most young children attend well-child visits regularly and parents expect developmental guidance from pediatricians. Two key pediatric preventive services are recommended: developmental monitoring/surveillance at every well-child visit and developmental screening at 9 months, 18 months, …

Reimagining The Discourse: Media Representation Of Women In Boston Public Schools' Superintendency, 1991 - 2016, Lisa M. Cullington May 2018

Reimagining The Discourse: Media Representation Of Women In Boston Public Schools' Superintendency, 1991 - 2016, Lisa M. Cullington

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

This study examines the relationship among public discourse, power and leadership for women superintendents in Boston Public Schools. For this qualitative study, I use a feminist poststructural discourse analysis (FPDA) to examine newspaper articles from The Boston Globe from 1991 to 2016. Through a FPDA, I illuminate the ways in which women superintendents have been discursively produced amidst neoliberal educational reform movements. In this study, I focus on how the superintendent’s role was conceptualized as a male endeavor in The Boston Globe, and the implications of this for current educational leaders.

Two major discursive stages frame the study’s time period: …

Critical Reflections In International Contexts: Polyethnographic Accounts Of An International Doctoral Research Seminar, Lisa Fedoruk, Jon Woodend, Janet Groen, Avis Beek, Sylvie Roy, Xueqin Wu, Xiang Li

The Qualitative Report

As the world becomes more globally interconnected, international partnerships, including those within higher education, have increased. In an exemplar of these international partnerships from an academic standpoint, selected doctoral students and faculty from Australian, Chinese, and Canadian universities participated in an International Doctoral Research Seminar held in China in December 2015. The objective of this seminar was to have academic debate regarding educational reform. A critical by-product of this seminar was the meaning made by the participants from this experience. This paper reviews the critical polyethnographic reflections of the Canadian participants for three salient and influential topics including the role …

The Interplay Of Expatriates’ Psychological And Social Capital For Knowledge Transfer, Aleša Saša Sitar, Katarina Katja Mihelič May 2018

The Interplay Of Expatriates’ Psychological And Social Capital For Knowledge Transfer, Aleša Saša Sitar, Katarina Katja Mihelič

Economic and Business Review

Expatriate managers are recognised as fundamentally important stakeholders in the process of transferring knowledge between headquarters and subsidiaries in multinational corporations (MNCs). This paper’s goal is to determine how expatriates’ personal capital (i.e. positive psychological capital and social capital) facilitates conventional and reverse knowledge transfer where there are language, cultural and geographical differences between headquarters and subsidiaries. A qualitative multiple case study approach was used to analyse the data, obtained by in-depth interviews with expatriates and managers from three MNCs. The findings suggest that psychological capital supports knowledge transfers in MNCs in two ways: first, directly and, second, through the …

The End Of Death? Conscious Life In Global Cyberspace, Purdy, Michael May 2018

The End Of Death? Conscious Life In Global Cyberspace, Purdy, Michael

Journal of Conscious Evolution

In The Ever-Present Origin, Jean Gebser, in talking about the magical structure of consciousness[1], states: "All directing implies a consciousness process" (EPO 49). And so to die is to become not consciousness, to lose the power to direct, ultimately to lose control over our own destiny. Being only human, and realizing that death is often more real than an afterlife that we cannot experience while alive[2], we actively fight any loss of control-we fight the passage to death. In that directedness, the glimmerings of which began with magical consciousness, and that came to full awareness …

A General Introduction To Integral Theory And Comprehensive Mapmaking, Saiter, Sean M. May 2018

A General Introduction To Integral Theory And Comprehensive Mapmaking, Saiter, Sean M.

Journal of Conscious Evolution

While attempting to keep to the larger vision of integral studies as a whole I shall be proposing a rudimentary outline of an underlying assertion primarily based upon the works of Ken Wilber, Jean Gebser, Don Beck and Christopher Cowan (based on the work of Clare Graves), and Mark B. Woodhouse. Robert Kegan, Howard Gardner, James Mark Baldwin, Susan Cook-Greuter, and Carol Gilligan are influences working in the background.

Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind when trying to understand integral studies as a field is that a fundamental, underlying message in Wilber's, Graves', Beck's, Gebser's, and Woodhouse's …

Pipeline Or Waterslide: Advancing Women Into Executive Positions In Business And Financial Planning, Shannon Maura Domski May 2018

Pipeline Or Waterslide: Advancing Women Into Executive Positions In Business And Financial Planning, Shannon Maura Domski

Celebration of Learning

We seek to understand the continued lack of females in upper management or “C-Suite” positions in business and more specifically looking at the continued lack of female planners in the financial planning industry. We hypothesis that although great strides are being made to foster inclusion these changes are stalled not only by unconscious prejudices against women, but also by a lack of confidence by women themselves. By conducting interviews with over a dozen women in a variety of executive and planning positions we attempted to bring a consensus of some of the root causes of this imbalance as well as …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Concept-Based And Grammar-Based Methods Of Instruction On The Acquisition Of The Subjunctive Among Heritage And Second Language Learners Of Spanish, Antoni Fernandez Parera May 2018

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Concept-Based And Grammar-Based Methods Of Instruction On The Acquisition Of The Subjunctive Among Heritage And Second Language Learners Of Spanish, Antoni Fernandez Parera

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the outcomes of two different types of instructional approaches on advanced second language (L2) learners and intermediate heritage language (HL) learners of Spanish. Two methodologically distinct pedagogical interventions were conducted: 1) MCE (Mindful Conceptual Engagement), derived from the principles set in Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory of mind (SCT); and 2) Grammar-Based Instruction, which is based upon more traditional methods of instruction involving the description and practice of grammatical content (e.g., fill-in-the blank exercises). Both interventions focused on usage of the subjunctive in variable contexts where the indicative was possible, but with a subsequent change in meaning (e.g., Busco …

The Return Of The Self, Or Whatever Happened To Postmodern Jurisprudence?, Stephen Matthew Feldman May 2018

The Return Of The Self, Or Whatever Happened To Postmodern Jurisprudence?, Stephen Matthew Feldman

Faculty Articles

Postmodern jurisprudence was all the rage in the 1990s Two of the most renowned postmodernists Stanley Fish and Pierre Schlag both persistently criticized mainstream legal scholars for believing they were modernist selvesindependent sovereign and autonomous agents who could remake the social and legal world merely by writing a law review article Then Fish and Schlag turned on each other Each attacked the other for making the same mistake harboring a modernist self I revisit this skirmish for two reasons First it helps explain the current moribund state of postmodern jurisprudence If two of the leading postmodernists could not avoid embedding …

Music Is The "Noise Of Remembering" Tracing The Origins, Influences, And Connectivities Of West African Music, Adam Friedman May 2018

Music Is The "Noise Of Remembering" Tracing The Origins, Influences, And Connectivities Of West African Music, Adam Friedman

Lawrence University Honors Projects

The popularity and universal reach of music genres such as Jazz and Hip Hop attest to the idea that these forms have been long established as a vital part of global musical culture. For people who are familiar with Afrocentric music, it is clear that styles such as Jazz and Hip Hop are rooted in, and inextricably linked with, African culture and history. What is more difficult to make sense of, however, is how and why transplanted African culture came to have such wide reaching impact in the new contexts in which it was taken up – because the stories …

Santería In A Globalized World: A Study In Afro-Cuban Folkloric Music, Nathan Montgomery May 2018

Santería In A Globalized World: A Study In Afro-Cuban Folkloric Music, Nathan Montgomery

Lawrence University Honors Projects

The Yoruban people of modern-day Nigeria worship many deities called orichas by means of singing, drumming, and dancing. Their aurally preserved artistic traditions are intrinsically connected to both religious ceremony and everyday life. These forms of worship traveled to the Americas during the colonial era through the brutal transatlantic slave trade and continued to evolve beneath racist societal hierarchies implemented by western European nations. Despite severe oppression, Yoruban slaves in Cuba were able to disguise orichas behind Catholic saints so that they could still actively worship in public. This initial guise led to a synthesis of religious practice, language, and …

Murmur/Murmuro, Paola M. Di Tolla May 2018

Murmur/Murmuro, Paola M. Di Tolla

Theses and Dissertations

By using repetition or misplacing intonations and accents, etc. one can imitate the slipperiness of spoken language. However, it is the accidental slippage that I find most revealing and exciting because it allows for two conversations to exist in one. Once spoken language is transcribed as text, it is put through another filter and the risk of [accidental] slippage increases by a different measure. Fingers don’t keep up or autocorrect insists on taking matters into its own hands.

Exiting Congressional-Executive Agreements, Curtis A. Bradley May 2018

Exiting Congressional-Executive Agreements, Curtis A. Bradley

Duke Law Journal

Commentators have argued that, even if the president has the unilateral authority to terminate Article II treaties concluded with the Senate’s advice and consent, the president lacks the unilateral authority to terminate “congressional-executive agreements” concluded with majority congressional approval, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This Article challenges that claim. If one accepts a presidential authority to terminate Article II treaties, this Article contends, there is no persuasive reason to conclude differently with respect to congressional-executive agreements. Congressional-executive agreements have become largely interchangeable with Article II treaties as a matter of domestic law and practice. For example, …

Authentic Texts Used By Efl Vocational Teachers In Listening Classes: Are They Suitable With Learners’ Needs?, Hairudin Rahman, Nunung Suryati

Jurnal Pendidikan: Teori, Penelitian, dan Pengembangan

This study aimed to reveal the suitability of the authentic listening texts which were used by English teachers to their EFL vocational learners in listening classes. Previous studies have found out that EFL learners will more readily go deeply into the listening activities if EFL teachers provide authentic materials (henceforth AMs) rather than using artificial materials. To gain an insight on the use of authentic listening materials, this study applied a descriptive qualitative design. The study took place at in a public vocational school (SMK Negeri) in Malang. Three out of those seven EFL teachers were purposively selected as participants …
