An Examination Of Scholarly Critique In Drs Publications And Its Role As Catalyst For Community Building, Jordan Beck, Laureline Chiapello
An Examination Of Scholarly Critique In Drs Publications And Its Role As Catalyst For Community Building, Jordan Beck, Laureline Chiapello
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The design research community has been interested in its identity as an intellectual community for some time, and, as with design itself, critique is central to good scholarship. Building on recent citation analyses in the field, in this paper we examine two cases of critique in design research scholarship. We aim to contribute to the theory of scholarly critique by providing a richer picture of critical citations than has previously been available. In addition, we identify the need for a crucial methodological development in the field; namely, design researchers need a way to examine and assess critical citations from within. …
Scenes Of Writing, Anne Burdick
Scenes Of Writing, Anne Burdick
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper looks at how speculative fiction can provide a design space to explore the effects of technologies for critical interpretation. Using Trina: A Design Fiction as a case study, the paper builds upon Lucy Suchman’s study into how technology teams design “the human” in tandem with the computer, asking can there be a model of “the human” suited to technologies for subjective judgment? Looking closely at the characters in Trina, we see individuals whose capacities, specificities, social histories, and individual biographies inform the degree of agency that each has with the writing technologies that define their work and worth. …
A Framework To Maximise Design Knowledge Exchange, Kathryn Burns
A Framework To Maximise Design Knowledge Exchange, Kathryn Burns
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper explores the conference theme of design as a catalyst for change through a set of reflections regarding the experience of delivering several major design knowledge exchange projects. Based in a university context, the projects have worked with more than 500 companies over 15 years and total in excess of £6.5million in value. The paper outlines the experiences of developing and delivering the projects. It explores the efficacy of the various delivery vehicles in relation to developing design awareness, knowledge, use and strategic commercial exploitation. Finally, the analysis proposes a framework for optimising the exchange of design knowledge between …

Methods Across Borders: Reflections Of Using Design-Led Qualitative Methods In Burkina Faso, Adolphe Yemtim, Achille Sévérin Lebongo Onana, Charlotte Ray, Jamie Cross, Craig Martin, Arno G. Verhoeven
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The paper presents an overview of activities of a funded project interrogating energy requirements of displaced populations in the Goudoubo camp in Burkina Faso. The overall project adopts a qualitative approach to enquiry using methods often employed by designers in participatory and human-centred design projects, with training provided for embedded researchers from disciplines other than design through a series of workshops prior fieldwork. The overall project aims to build a qualitative toolkit for enquiry into the daily lives of refuges and their lived energy requirements. The paper asks whether the engaged design methods, understood in the context of “global north” …
How Materials Support Conceptual Blending In Ideation, Michael Mose Biskjaer, Aron Fischel, Graham Dove, Kim Halskov
How Materials Support Conceptual Blending In Ideation, Michael Mose Biskjaer, Aron Fischel, Graham Dove, Kim Halskov
DRS Biennial Conference Series
While combining materials as sources of inspiration is a familiar strategy in design ideation, the intricacy of how materials affect the emergence of concepts has not been fully examined. This paper offers a detailed analysis of a sequence of a design ideation workshop using conceptual blending as an explanatory model to pry open the complexity of this activity, showing how research on design materials improves insight into how a design concept emerges. We show this empirically in a second-by-second analysis of a card-based design ideation episode using a multi-touch surface table. We offer process-analytical evidence for the case that manipulation …
Mybias: A Web-Based Tool To Overcome Designers’ Biases In Heterogeneous Design Teams, Francesca Mattioli, Silvia Deborah Ferraris, Venere Ferraro, Lucia Rosa Elena Rampino
Mybias: A Web-Based Tool To Overcome Designers’ Biases In Heterogeneous Design Teams, Francesca Mattioli, Silvia Deborah Ferraris, Venere Ferraro, Lucia Rosa Elena Rampino
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Cross-cultural and interdisciplinary collaborations are increasing in all sectors, from companies to universities. As a consequence, design teams are becoming more and more heterogeneous; it thus becomes fundamental to improve teamwork for heterogeneous teams. Designer’s interpretation ability is a fundamental skill, but it might be strictly connected to the designer’s personal experience and can, therefore, be strongly biased. Are design students aware of this? If not, how can they be supported to manage diversity? In this paper, we first introduce our research that is aimed at better understanding the role of biases in the design process and in heterogeneous teams. …
Changes In Design Research: Sources And Methods Of Idea Generation In Industrial Design, Ying Sun, Sander Münster, Carlo Michael Sommer
Changes In Design Research: Sources And Methods Of Idea Generation In Industrial Design, Ying Sun, Sander Münster, Carlo Michael Sommer
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Design idea generation is a process rooted in individual knowledge and is often considered a precedent-based type of reasoning, where knowledge is continuously transformed to produce new insights. Selecting and organizing inspirational sources has a profound impact on how industrial designers generate creative solutions and creates its own challenges. Many authors have focused on what materials designers look for while searching for inspiration. However, there is less research concerning the approaches used to guide the process of envisioning design solutions when using these sources. Therefore, we conducted open-ended semi-structured qualitative interviews with 12 designers, to learn about how experienced industrial …
Distinctions Between The Communication Of Experiential And Academic Design Knowledge: A Linguistic Analysis, Yubo Kou, Colin M. Gray
Distinctions Between The Communication Of Experiential And Academic Design Knowledge: A Linguistic Analysis, Yubo Kou, Colin M. Gray
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Design research has historically focused upon collocated design practices where the production of artefacts, collaboration between designers, and designers’ learning practices are geographically bounded. Information and communication technologies are rapidly transforming this territorial context of designing and making by supporting designers to share experiential knowledge with peers online. But it is unclear how experiential design knowledge should be characterized, and how it may be different from academic design knowledge. In this study, we present a mixed-methods analysis to compare experiential design knowledge communicated in two online practitioner- oriented venues and two leading design research journals. We found that the articulation …

This work in progress paper describes the initial stages of a project which aims to characterize the mechanisms of hidden curriculum (HC) in engineering and identify methods for exploring this phenomenon. To effectively study the complex nature of HC, this work brings together researchers with a range of expertise (sociology, engineering education, engineering, statistics, policy analysis, curriculum and instruction) to develop a holistic approach to explore HC in engineering. This work describes the process of gathering input from this multidisciplinary team as well as the literature to develop a mixed-method instrument and model to explore the mechanisms behind HC in …

Perception & Perspective: An Analysis Of Discourse And Situational Factors In Reference Frame Selection, Robert J. Ross, Kavita E. Thomas
Perception & Perspective: An Analysis Of Discourse And Situational Factors In Reference Frame Selection, Robert J. Ross, Kavita E. Thomas
Conference papers
To integrate perception into dialogue, it is necessary to bind spatial language descriptions to reference frame use. To this end, we present an analysis of discourse and situational factors that may influence reference frame choice in dialogues. We show that factors including spatial orientation, task, self and other alignment, and dyad have an influence on reference frame use. We further show that a computational model to estimate reference frame based on these features provides results greater than both random and greedy reference frame selection strategies.
Wrestling With Agency, Courtney B. Nordgran
Wrestling With Agency, Courtney B. Nordgran
BYU English Symposium
In the Book of Mormon, the word wrestle, a distinctive and aggressive verb, is found in only two places: Enos 1:2 and Alma 8:10. Using that word to discuss prayer is a bold statement about one’s relationship to God and points to other similarities between the chapters, such as analogous beginnings, strikingly similar diction, allo-repetition, and various parallelisms. These similarities suggest that Mormon borrowed the word “wrestle” from Enos’ autobiographical account to create a connection between the two messengers of God and their stories. That connection is strengthened by the similarities, while the varying conclusions and other subtle changes …

Haiti's Resistant Press In The Age Of Jean-Claude Duvalier, 1971-1986., Jennifer Garcon
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the consolidation and overthrow of Jean-Claude Duvalier’s regime by tracing the resurgence of independent and increasingly oppositional Haitian print and radio media after 1971 and its growing role in national politics. Challenging interpretations that stress the suddenness of the political transformation of civil society leading to Duvalier’s ouster in 1986, I analyze a longer history of unrest and discontent as expressed in the pages of newspapers and weekly journals, as well as in radio broadcasts. I argue that the devolution of the Duvalier dictatorship can be traced back to the opening of limited press freedom in 1971. …

Relationship Between Vocal Fatigue And Physical/Psychological Factors In Prospective Vocal Professionals, Camille C. Gray
Relationship Between Vocal Fatigue And Physical/Psychological Factors In Prospective Vocal Professionals, Camille C. Gray
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background: To date, research has primarily focused on the subjective and objective measurement of vocal fatigue in professional voice users such as teachers and singers. However, these studies have not examined the effects of psychosocial factors (e.g., lack of sleep, emotional distress) leading to vocal fatigue in depth. Much like the professional voice users, students seeking to be professional voice users may face several psychosocial difficulties, may also experience similar vocal demands, and may develop vocal fatigue.
Goal: The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between psychosocial factors and vocal fatigue in students majoring in Communication Sciences …
Building Bridges, Not Walls, Between Latinx Immigrant Parents And Schools, Kiyomi Sánchez-Suzuki Colegrove
Building Bridges, Not Walls, Between Latinx Immigrant Parents And Schools, Kiyomi Sánchez-Suzuki Colegrove
Occasional Paper Series
As a teacher educator and former bilingual teacher, I have encountered many teachers who have negative misconceptions about immigrant parents. These misconceptions prevent teachers from forming reciprocal and meaningful relationships with parents and even with children (Colegrove, forthcoming). Negative misconceptions impact teachers’ abilities to be equitable as well as their willingness to offer high-quality learning experiences to children (Adair, 2015; Crosnoe, 2006) or to include parents in meaningful, educational decision-making (Doucet, 2011, 2008).
This essay addresses some of these misconceptions as they were articulated during a large video-cued ethnographic study of Latinx immigrant parents of young children in Texas and …

Building Bridges Between Home And School For Latinx Families Of Preschool Children, Gigliana Melzi, Adina Schick, Lauren Scarola
Occasional Paper Series
All children, regardless of their backgrounds, enter the classroom environment with a set of cultural and communal resources known as funds of knowledge (González, Moll, & Amanti, 2005; Moll, Amanti, Neff, & Gonzalez, 1992). Educators can support children’s learning and achievement by incorporating these funds of knowledge – which include, for example, cultural and familial values and traditions, family activities, and home language – into classroom learning experiences. All too often, however, educators fail to take advantage of these resources, and instead draw on mainstream values, traditions, and practices that have historically been embedded into classroom culture and protocol. Even …
Experiential Knowledge And Project-Based Learning In Bilingual Classrooms, Adriana Alvarez
Experiential Knowledge And Project-Based Learning In Bilingual Classrooms, Adriana Alvarez
Occasional Paper Series
Culturally and linguistically diverse children deserve sophisticated and dynamic biliterate learning opportunities that integrate the children’s life experiences and keen intellects. Dynamic learning in early childhood classrooms, including progressivist pedagogical approaches like project-based learning, has been shown to facilitate academic achievement as well as high-level learning capabilities including critical thinking, agency, problem solving, and negotiation (Adair, 2014; Bell, 2010; Hyson, 2008; Katz & Chard, 2000). Too often, culturally and linguistically diverse children are offered learning opportunities that fall short of helping students achieve their potential or of validating their life experiences (González, Moll, & Amanti, 2005; Nieto & Bode, 2008; …

Rethinking “Parent Involvement”: Perspectives Of Immigrant And Refugee Parents, Zeynep Isik-Ercan
Occasional Paper Series
I arrived in the U.S. 15 years ago as a master’s student in early childhood education after teaching in elementary schools in Turkey. Becoming a permanent resident in my new country and parenting my two Turkish-American boys fueled my scholarly interest in the experiences of immigrant communities with their children’s early school years, specifically the ways they negotiate cultural and linguistic identities in educational settings. Among many encounters with my children’s teachers, one is particularly memorable.
Shortly after Enis, my older son, began attending the campus preschool at age two, his teacher asked me to speak only English at home …
Administrators’ Roles In Offering Dynamic Early Learning Experiences To Children Of Latinx Immigrants, Alejandra Barraza, Pedro Martinez
Administrators’ Roles In Offering Dynamic Early Learning Experiences To Children Of Latinx Immigrants, Alejandra Barraza, Pedro Martinez
Occasional Paper Series
Principals and school administrators play a critical role in creating learning environments that are sensitive to the needs of students from immigrant families. School administrators, particularly principals, are tasked with making decisions that directly and indirectly impact what happens in a classroom. They act as instructional and visionary leaders as well as resource managers and so they determine both the culture and pedagogy of the school. They determine whether the main focus of the early learning classrooms will be academic skill development (literacy, numeracy), cognitive skill development (social competence, behavioral self-regulation, problem-solving, and decision-making), socio-emotional processing (helping others, empathy, sharing), …

Building Safe Community Spaces For Immigrant Families, One Library At A Time, Max Vazquez Dominguez, Denise Davila, Silvia Nogueron-Liu
Occasional Paper Series
In today’s political climate, supporting the needs of young children from Latinx immigrant families has become increasingly difficult at the community, institutional, state, and federal levels. This essay is about a group of Latinx families who participated in an innovative early literacy program at a county public library branch in the migration setting of the U.S. Southeast known as the New Latino Diaspora (Hamann, Wortham, Murillo, 2015). We describe the program and its role in building a safe and welcoming environment for Latinx students and their families. We include the voices of the librarian and parents who had never before …

“¡Quiere sacar a todos los suramericanos! Quiere quedarse con solo los blancos,1 shouted second grader Salvador2 to his classmate Victor. They were supposed to be reading Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin, but somehow the conversation had turned to the then presidential candidate for the Republican Party, Donald Trump. That was how Trump and his rhetoric entered our dual language classroom.
Far too often, the voices of students of color, their experiences, and their lives are not validated in the classroom. When Salvador and Victor’s conversation about Trump erupted, the teacher and I—the teacher …

I first met Alma1 when she was five years old and a kindergarten student in a multi-age Spanish-English dual language classroom in southern California. Alma is the child of immigrants from the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Somewhat shy and soft spoken, she nonetheless had many friends and seemed eager to engage with her peers in class. In interviews with me over the first few years of a longitudinal study that I was conducting at her school, she spent a great deal of time sharing the details of her rich literate life. Among other things, Alma loved poetry. In addition …

Introduction: A Vision For Transforming Early Childhood Research And Practice For Young Children Of Immigrants And Their Families, Fabienne Doucet, Jennifer Adair
Occasional Paper Series
This special issue of the Occasional Paper Series describes practices and policies that can positively impact the early schooling of children of immigrants in the United States. We consider the intersectionality of young children’s lives and what needs to change in order to ensure that race, class, immigration status, gender, and dis/ability can effectively contribute to children’s experiences at school and in other instructional contexts, rather than prevent them from getting the learning experiences they need and deserve.

The Making Of A ‘Kumauni’ Artifact: The Epic Malushahi, Vasudha Pande
The Making Of A ‘Kumauni’ Artifact: The Epic Malushahi, Vasudha Pande
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This essay will look at the making of the social imaginary of Kumaun through the study of print media and the performance practice of a popular ballad from the region: Malushahi. During the last two centuries, this classic love story has seen various incarnations. It has been a part of many print versions in Kumauni, Garhwali, Hindi and English—as poetry, prose, a novel, plays, and stories for children. It has been included partially or in full in various folk collections of Kumaun. It has also generated a reasonable amount of discussion in academic circles. A definitive version of the text …
