The Self And Other: Portraying Israeli And Palestinian Identities On Twitter, Jason Deegan, John Hogan, Sharon Feeney, Brendan K. O'Rourke
The Self And Other: Portraying Israeli And Palestinian Identities On Twitter, Jason Deegan, John Hogan, Sharon Feeney, Brendan K. O'Rourke
Irish Communication Review
The conflict between Israel and Palestine has lasted over half a century, with both sides enduring military and political turmoil. This paper explores how Twitter is being used as a medium to portray identities in the conflict. We examine the tweets contained in the @IDFspokesperson and @ISMPalestine Twitter accounts between late 2015 and early 2016. Using textual analysis, we gain an insight into how these Twitter accounts, defined by the conflict, are used in portraying the self and the other.
Text Analytics Techniques In The Digital World: A Sentiment Analysis Case Study Of The Coverage Of Climate Change On Us News Networks, Jerome Casey
Irish Communication Review
This paper analyses nearly 600 news segments relating to climate change broadcast on 3 American news networks over a period of 8 years. The paper demonstrates the typical steps involved in a text analytics solution. It shows how the text data was sourced and imported into a software program. The steps carried out in pre-processing the text data are outlined as well as explaining key terms in the text analytics pipeline. A sentiment analysis is applied using a lexicon and further processing is carried out to answer the
original questions posed such as what words drive a particular sentiment category, …
Text Analytics Techniques In The Digital World: Word Embeddings And Bias, Marisa Llorens
Text Analytics Techniques In The Digital World: Word Embeddings And Bias, Marisa Llorens
Irish Communication Review
The proliferation of textual data in the form of online news articles and social media feeds has had an impact on the text analytics developments in recent years. Some of the challenges of natural language processing, understanding and generation have been successfully resolved and the results are applications such as AI personal assistants and bots. Word embeddings are an example of these successful solutions where unsupervised data-driven algorithms are used to understand concepts and relationships between words. This paper presents a description of word embedding algorithms, and a discussion on how bias in the training data can be captured, reproduced …

Cue Competition During Phonotactic Processing In Bilingual Adults As Measured By Eye-Tracking, Katherine Manrique
Cue Competition During Phonotactic Processing In Bilingual Adults As Measured By Eye-Tracking, Katherine Manrique
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
It is well documented in the literature that bilingual speakers simultaneously activate both languages during spoken language processing (e.g., Marian & Spivey, 2003). However, parallel activation can lead to competition between the two languages (e.g., Blumenfield & Marian, 2013; Freeman, Shook, & Marian, 2016). The Unified Competition model (UCM) provides a theory as to how bilingual speakers navigate through two languages while different linguistic cues are competing (MacWhinney, 2005). The UCM proposes that cues are used to process language, based on cue validity (the product of how reliable and available a cue is), which is determined by cue strength (a …
Interpreting Contemporary Pilgrimage As Spiritual Journey Or Aesthetic Tourism Along The Appalachian Trail, Kip Redick
Interpreting Contemporary Pilgrimage As Spiritual Journey Or Aesthetic Tourism Along The Appalachian Trail, Kip Redick
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Pilgrimage and tourism can be interpreted as overlapping travel experiences. Given all the changes mass transportation and communication technologies have brought, understanding the phenomenon of pilgrimage becomes fraught with ambiguity. Is pilgrimage better understood as a tourist excursion that affords instances of religious devotion? Pilgrimage routes and long distance scenic trails have their aesthetic appeal, which pilgrims and tourists enjoy. Is there a difference in the way these two groups walk these trails that become manifest through aesthetic experiences and encounters? Looking at long distance hiking on the Appalachian Trail as spiritual journey opens up a reinterpretation of both pilgrimage …

An Innovative Approach Based On Recursive Clustering To Design Optimal Districts In Water Distribution Networks, Armando Di Nardo, Michele Di Natale, Carlo Giudicianni, Dino Musmarra, Giovanni Francesco Santonastaso
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Water Network Partitioning (WNP) in District Metered Areas (DMAs) is an effective management strategy for the Water Distribution Networks (WDNs), simplifying pressure control, water loss detection and protection from contamination. Nevertheless, the definition of permanent DMAs constitutes an arduous task, since, the closure of some pipes may worsen significantly the energy and the topological redundancy of the system. In recent years, several optimization procedures, relied on heuristic optimization methods, were focused on the optimal design of DMAs; they generally are based on the simultaneous insertion of gate valves in all boundary pipes defined in the clustering phase. Since these procedures …

The Future Of Heuristic Fossils, Simon T. Downs, Claire A. Lerpiniere
The Future Of Heuristic Fossils, Simon T. Downs, Claire A. Lerpiniere
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The authors propose that while many fields of design are involved in reflexive interactions with design research tools, others are strongly heuristic in both their application of historic knowledge bases and in the ways in which they allow themselves to move forward, to construct new knowledge as an extension of craft thinking with user-centred evidence. These historical frames become a limiting factor in both the ways that practice can develop but also, more worryingly, in the ways in which these fields can develop their own research tools.
Drawing To See / Drawn To Seeing: Multimodal Reinterpretation In An Autonomous Drawing Machine, Scott Penman
Drawing To See / Drawn To Seeing: Multimodal Reinterpretation In An Autonomous Drawing Machine, Scott Penman
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Drawing is celebrated as a powerful tool in the designer’s toolbox. While it is generally understood to be a useful method in the visualization of abstract concepts and complex scenarios, it is equally important to understand drawing’s role in the pursuit of novel solutions. Drawing affords enough physical and conceptual space between modes of representation to permit the designer to reinterpret the design. With this creative act as inspiration, this paper reviews the topic of computational play as a framework for implementing autonomous, creative design in computational systems. The framework is demonstrated in a proof-of-concept drawing machine. Specifically, the machine …
Numeral Legibility And Visual Complexity, Sofie Beier, Jean-Baptiste Bernard, Eric Castet
Numeral Legibility And Visual Complexity, Sofie Beier, Jean-Baptiste Bernard, Eric Castet
DRS Biennial Conference Series
To enhance the peripheral legibility of numerals we designed three versions of the digits from 1 through 9 by modifying the complexity of each numeral (equivalent to their digit skeleton) while controlling for variations in other physical parameters. Observers identified the different versions of the digits in random three-digit strings, presented within their peripheral visual field. Our results showed that the digit ‘1’ should have a narrow design without a crossbar at the bottom, the digits ‘3’ and ‘9’ should benefit from open apertures, and the digit ‘7’ should have a straight leg and no serif at the horizontal bar. …
Differences In English Language Proficiency Growth: A Possible Indicator Of Giftedness For English Learners, Myriam Lindo
Differences In English Language Proficiency Growth: A Possible Indicator Of Giftedness For English Learners, Myriam Lindo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The disproportionality of culturally and linguistically diverse learners in exceptional education is an ongoing issue (Bernal, 2002; Ford, 2012). One of these special populations is that of English learners (ELs), who are overrepresented in special education programs and underrepresented in gifted and talented programs (Ford, 2012).The extant literature suggests that a rapid rate of growth in English language proficiency (ELP) may be one of the characteristics used to indicate giftedness in English learners (Brulles, Castellano, & Laing, 2011; Harris, Plucker, Rapp, & Martinez, 2009). However, no studies have analyzed English Language proficiency (ELP) growth trajectories of gifted ELs. This study …
Trauma And The Credibility Economy: An Analysis Of Epistemic Violence And Its Traumatic Functions, Gina Stinnett
Trauma And The Credibility Economy: An Analysis Of Epistemic Violence And Its Traumatic Functions, Gina Stinnett
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I argue that the work done in philosophy on epistemic injustice can put pressure on the assumptions driving the work of both trauma theory and rhetorical theory. In addition to arguing how epistemic injustice can reinforce trauma, I argue that epistemic injustice has its own power to traumatize. I refer to this as “epistemic trauma,” or a trauma to one’s ability to know their experience and to make a claim based on this knowledge. Research on epistemic injustice states that when one encounters repeated epistemic injustice, they become less likely to share their experiences at all—they fall …

How Consumers Read The Visual Presentation Of Food Packaging Design In A Cross-Cultural Context: A Conceptual Framework And Case Study, Linna Hu, Hua Dong
How Consumers Read The Visual Presentation Of Food Packaging Design In A Cross-Cultural Context: A Conceptual Framework And Case Study, Linna Hu, Hua Dong
DRS Biennial Conference Series
How consumers understand products is based largely on their communication with the products, which is significantly influenced not only by the consumers’ cultural background but also by the cultural context where the communication happens. This paper viewed consumers as readers who play active roles in the dynamic structure of communication and discussed how cultural factors affect consumers in reading design. Companies are now striving to create visually desirable products that can be universally recognized in the increasingly global marketplace. ‘Lao Gan Ma’, the most popular chilli sauce brand in China, was introduced as a case study in this paper. In …
Critique And Post-Critique In Social Innovation Projects: Between Speculation And Realism, Sissel Olander
Critique And Post-Critique In Social Innovation Projects: Between Speculation And Realism, Sissel Olander
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper discusses notions of critique, post-critique, speculation and realism, as it reflects through a practice-based design research project, which worked as part of a bigger Danish public innovation program with the involvement of citizens in the design of a new library and cultural house under construction. Specifically, the paper sets out to challenge what seems to be a dichotomous “either-or” thinking in the descriptions and analyses of practice-based design research projects. Accounts of design research that operates in overlapping landscapes of academia, public sector and business are often depicted as too solution-orientated and therefore not reflexive, too engaged and …

Drawing As Notational Thinking In Architectural Design, Otto Paans, Ralf Pasel
Drawing As Notational Thinking In Architectural Design, Otto Paans, Ralf Pasel
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In view of a renewed interest in notationality as central concept in design theory, the aim of this paper is to rethink of the concept of notationality as developed by Nelson Goodman in order to conceptualize the link between notational practices and their role as epistemic procedures in architectural design in a way that is tailored to the discipline. In-between the radical ambiguity of early sketches and the determined, anatomical character of the final drawings of an architectural design process exists a conceptual twilight zone in which various types of visuals overlap and interact, and in which the practice of …

Designing Play Equipment For Children With Cerebral Palsy: The Context And Design Guidelines, Ganna Borzenkova, Kristina Niedderer, Tunde Rozsahegyi
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper presents an investigation into designing play equipment for encouraging peer-to-peer social interactions of children with cerebral palsy as a part of developing their social competence. The focus is on developing a new model of, and guidelines for designing play equipment for engaging children in peer interactions during play sessions. Research projects on the development of children with cerebral palsy have to date mainly concentrated on physical and cognitive areas or on social development through special educational programmes and training. This paper, in contrast, investigates developing social competence through empowering children to participate in open-ended peer play through a …

Co-Creating Happy Moments: A Case Study Of Designing For People With Mental Health Challenges, Hong Li, Yiyun Zha, Jie Zhao
Co-Creating Happy Moments: A Case Study Of Designing For People With Mental Health Challenges, Hong Li, Yiyun Zha, Jie Zhao
DRS Biennial Conference Series
We all have to consider the importance of mental health, which just as with physical health can cause us to feel ill, unwell and ostracized from our community. However, the stereotypes and prejudice that result from misconceptions about mental problems appears to form an impassive and invisible barrier between the people with mental health challenges and the public who is less willing to interact with them. As three researchers respectively from service design, visual communication and art education, we undertook collaborative interdisciplinary design as a strategy, in order to explore a participatory approach to engage with our participants, namely, an …
Tacit Synthesis: Typography As Research, Jilian Coorey, Aoife Mooney
Tacit Synthesis: Typography As Research, Jilian Coorey, Aoife Mooney
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The designer of today is solving complex problems. Among other skills, the literacy of other disciplines, the ability to be nimble in practice, engage in participatory design, and the capacity to interpret and synthesize research is imperative. For this study, we were intent on fostering a research-driven classroom, specifically in relation to typography. To expand student horizons, we’ve implemented the International Society of Typographic Designers briefs, providing a platform of research, innovation and conceptual thinking. Students typographically interpret a text, curating and authoring content. In implementing an inquiry-based learning methodology, research dictates form, rather than relying on typographic trends. Limiting …

All over the world manufacturing companies are moving towards service business. The service-dominated landscape of business is complex and the value of services is produced in networks combining products, services, different providers and actors. Services deeply influence the socio-economic systems we are living in, and, therefore, in the future all business will be service business one way or another. The article locates embodied design methods in the context of industrial service design processes and large-scale organisations. It connects embodied design to changing business landscape via industrial service design field where theatrical methods are used to understand, ideate and evaluate the …
