Analyzing The Cultural Critical Discourse Of Adolescent Authentic Discussions Using Online Booktalks, Christina Cereghini
Analyzing The Cultural Critical Discourse Of Adolescent Authentic Discussions Using Online Booktalks, Christina Cereghini
Theses and Dissertations
This mixed methods study investigates the effect of cultural and sociolinguistic textures of talk on authentic discussion patterns and whether reading comprehension and inferencing are affected in an online booktalk environment with adolescents. The research will also investigate the contextual features of the classroom community to be studied to help determine the specific sociocultural norms established in that classroom. The unique conditions of the setting in which today’s adolescents function, such as amplified access to digital technologies, the evolving status of socialization, the express shift of physical and emotional factors, and the collective influence of prior experiences with reading, call …
The Influence Of Teacher Decision-Making On The Literacy Gains Of Elementary Students With Characteristics Of Dyslexia, Natalee Mcgill
The Influence Of Teacher Decision-Making On The Literacy Gains Of Elementary Students With Characteristics Of Dyslexia, Natalee Mcgill
Theses and Dissertations
This descriptive case study approach with multiple cases and an interrupted time-series design used quantitative and qualitative data to answer two research questions: 1) What changes occur over time in the problem-solving strategies, text-reading accuracy, and phonological knowledge of struggling readers in response to targeted instruction in an innovative dyslexia intervention? 2) How do teachers engage in a collaborative, decision-making process to monitor student learning and adjust scaffolding procedures for struggling readers who are participating in an innovative dyslexia intervention? The quantitative data analysis examined the literacy gains for eight elementary students with characteristics of dyslexia who had participated in …
An Eye Tracking Study: Composition Teachers’ Assessment Of Native And Non-Native, Rachel Casper, Grant Eckstein
An Eye Tracking Study: Composition Teachers’ Assessment Of Native And Non-Native, Rachel Casper, Grant Eckstein
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Applied linguists are interested in the cognitive processes of writing teachers within the subfields of both second language writing and writing assessment. Such cognitive insights as how a teacher reads and scores a piece of non-native English speaker (L2) writing can have an impact on the way in which second languages are taught and assessed in writing classrooms. This is particularly relevant as increasing numbers of L2 students matriculate into composition courses traditionally designed for native-English speakers.

Are We Doing More Than We Know? Possible Mechanisms Of Response To Music Therapy, Amy Clements-Cortés, Lee Bartel
Are We Doing More Than We Know? Possible Mechanisms Of Response To Music Therapy, Amy Clements-Cortés, Lee Bartel
Music Faculty Publications
Due to advances in medical knowledge the population of older adults struggling with issues of aging like Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and stroke is growing. There is a need for therapeutic interventions to provide adaptive strategies to sustain quality of life, decrease neurologic impairment, and maintain or slow cognitive decline and function due to degenerative neurologic diseases. Musical interventions with adults with cognitive impairments have received increased attention over the past few years, such as the value of personalized music listening in the iPod project for AD; music as a tool to decrease agitation and anxiety in dementia; …

From Affirmative Action To Anti-Colonialism: Stalin And The Prehistory Of Post-Colonialism, Roland Boer
From Affirmative Action To Anti-Colonialism: Stalin And The Prehistory Of Post-Colonialism, Roland Boer
Culture, Society, and Praxis
This article argues that a significant, albeit forgotten piece of the history of post-colonialism concerns none other than Joseph Stalin. The study begins by picking up on the insight, from Christina Petterson, that the abolition of the ‘second world’ (the socialist world) was a precondition for the arrival of postcolonial theory, which tellingly came into its own only after 1989. The next step is to investigate the thought and practice of Stalin in the Soviet Union, for he was the architect of what has been called the world’s first and most comprehensive affirmative action program, especially in relation to nationalities, …
Film, Arts And Culture As Community Outreach Tools: Perspectives From Singapore, Victor Yu
Film, Arts And Culture As Community Outreach Tools: Perspectives From Singapore, Victor Yu
Culture, Society, and Praxis
This article focuses on the Singapore’s government using the film and arts both as an economic as well as a community outreach tool. It argues that the evolution of the state arts policy is a function of the economic policy. Its “Creative City” approach is both economically-driven as well as arts-centered. At the same time, policy makers have introduced many strategies to build a vibrant film and arts sector to make the arts more accessible to the community. Cinemas and arts institutions also are seeking ways to increase the public’s access and exposure to their activities.

Bible As Notepad. Tracing Annotations And Annotation Practices In Late Antique And Medieval Biblical Manuscripts, Liv Ingeborg Lied, Marilena Maniaci, Jeff Childers
Graduate School of Theology
The present volume provides a comparative look at the contents and layout features of secondary annotations in biblical manuscripts across linguistic traditions. Due to the privileged focus on the text in the columns, these annotations and the practices that produced them have not received the scholarly attention they deserve. The vast richness of extant verbal and figurative notes accompanying the biblical texts in the intercolumns and margins of the manuscript pages have thus been largely overlooked. The case studies gathered in this volume explore Jewish and Christian biblical manuscripts through the lens of their annotations, addressing the various relationships between …

Communication
This article introduces the special issue of Research on Language and Social Interaction organized around the theme “Opening and Maintaining Face-to-Face Interaction.” The contributions to this special issue collectively consider “how to begin”—either a new encounter or a new sequence after a lapse in conversation. All articles analyze naturally occurring, video-recorded episodes of casual and/or institutional copresent interaction using multimodal conversation analytic methods. Though the opening phase of a face-to-face encounter may elapse in a matter of seconds, this article shows it to house a dense universe of phenomena central to sustaining our human sense of self and our social …

Portuguese And German Repertoires Perceived By Portuguese Speaking Children In Germany: A Tale Of Two Continua, Sílvia Melo-Pfeifer, Alexandra Fidalgo Schmidt
Journal of Multilingual Education Research
After a theoretical overview of the concept of heritage language (HL) from a plurilingual perspective, we will describe the project “Images on the (teaching of) Portuguese Language abroad”. For this project, several drawings were collected, produced by lusodescendant children living in Germany and attending supplementary Portuguese lessons. We will analyze four tendencies of students’ representations towards Portuguese and German, as well as towards the skills they have developed in those languages. These representations illustrate four profiles of Portuguese Heritage Language (PHL) learners present in the classroom (in terms of motivations, skills, linguistic repertoires, etc.). As conclusions, we will point at: …

The Qualitative Report
Classroom management (CM) is one of the most important issues in education and this research was aimed at understanding the classroom management problems and the coping strategies of Indonesian Islamic Boarding schools’ [hereinafter-termed pesantren] with the uniqueness of their system from the perspectives of the English teachers. Specifically, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom management (CM) problems and the coping strategies of Indonesian Islamic boarding schools’ teachers. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions (FGD), and observation with eight English teachers working in the three pesantren. …

MIT researchers, students, and staff have long valued and put into action MIT’s mission to generate and disseminate knowledge by openly and freely sharing research and educational materials. Indeed, the Institute has been at the forefront of the sharing culture: MIT launched OpenCourseWare (OCW), a free webbased publication of virtually all MIT course content in 2001; in 2002 released DSpace, an open-source platform for managing research materials and publications co-created by MIT Libraries staff; and adopted the first campus-wide faculty open access (OA) policy in the US in 2009.
Convening an open access task force was one of the 10 …
We Should Persuade Iran With Bargains Not Bombs, Theodore Adam Harris
We Should Persuade Iran With Bargains Not Bombs, Theodore Adam Harris
Culture, Society, and Praxis
Iran’s defiance of the IAEA has raised questions about Tehran’s desire to build nuclear weapons and this in turn has put that country squarely into the cross-hairs of the hawks in Washington. This case study reflects my search to answer a logical question stemming from the current backdrop; should we bomb Iran in order to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons? I am a U.S. Marine Corps combat veteran from the first gulf war where I acted as an Iranian linguist signals intelligence and crypto-logic technician. It is impossible for me not to be passionate about our policies in the …
Establishing Enemy Combatant As Political Rhetoric: How The Bush Administration Has Framed The Conversation On Wartime Prisoners, Paul R. Alexander
Establishing Enemy Combatant As Political Rhetoric: How The Bush Administration Has Framed The Conversation On Wartime Prisoners, Paul R. Alexander
Culture, Society, and Praxis
The White House administration of George W. Bush faced a crisis when an attack was committed on United States territory in September of 2001. As a result, the administration has initiated a "War on Terror" in which they have disregarded the Geneva Conventions and placed a huge amount of authority in the role of the president in determining who is classified as an "enemy combatant." This paper specifically addresses the use of the term "enemy combatant" as a rhetorical device which the administration has used to make a moral statement about prisoners of war. Using George Lakoff's concept of frames, …

Teacher Perceptions Of A Culture Of Thinking, Gary G. Andersen Ph.D.
Advanced Education Programs Faculty Publications
Building classroom and school cultures of thinking is one of the fundamental and critical purposes of education. This study is an exploratory effort to obtain a clearer picture of teachers’ perceptions about eight components of a culture of thinking within their own classroom. The instrument used is a quantitative survey developed by Ritchhart (2015) that examines eight forces of cultures of thinking (expectations, language, modeling, time, opportunities, routines, physical environment and interactions). The survey results provide useful information about potential target areas for those seeking to deepen cultures of thinking in educational settings

Design Patterns As A Collaborative Entity Within The Smart Environment, Aitor Arribas Velasco, John Mcgrory, Damon Berry
Design Patterns As A Collaborative Entity Within The Smart Environment, Aitor Arribas Velasco, John Mcgrory, Damon Berry
Conference papers
Modern technology is increasingly being employed to create a “smart” living experience. These “smart” technology entities are producing copious of amounts data, which in turn rely on increased storage, distribution and computation needs to manage the data. Depending on the scenario, the diversity of piecemeal solutions almost mirrors the numbers of problems posed. Some successful solutions touted as being “smart” for example: save energy, or to support in assisted living, have been created, but the true underlying pattern of interactivity has not been identified. In the field of computing, patterns can provide a general, reusable solution to commonly repeatable occurring …
