The Making Of A Construct: Lessons From 30 Years Of The Kogut And Singh Cultural Distance Index, Ilya R. P. Cuypers, Gokhan Ertug, Pursey Pmar M.A.R. Heugens, Bruce Kogut, Tengjian Zou

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The 30-year anniversary of Kogut and Singh’s (1988) groundbreaking study that introduced the concept of cultural distance and its accompanying measure provides the opportunity to take stock of what makes for a good construct. We organize our discussion around the issues of concept, algorithm, and data to clarify and gauge their contribution, before highlighting the impact of their work more generally. Many of the challenges raised by critical observers focus on one of these three dimensions. As there is value in looking systematically at the construct from concept to data, we set out the argument of the index and discuss …

The Poststructuralist Broom Of Wallace’S System: A Conversation Between Wittgenstein And Derrida, Vernon W. Cisney Oct 2018

The Poststructuralist Broom Of Wallace’S System: A Conversation Between Wittgenstein And Derrida, Vernon W. Cisney

Philosophy Faculty Publications

David Foster Wallace famously characterized his first novel, The Broom of the System, as ‘a conversation between [Ludwig] Wittgenstein and [Jacques] Derrida.’ This comes as little surprise, given the ubiquity of the question of language in the works of these two thinkers, and given the novel’s constant reflections on the relation between language and world. Broom’s protagonist, Lenore Beadsmen – in search of her eponymous great-grandmother – is preoccupied with the dread that ‘all that really exists of [her] life is what can be said about it,’ that is to say, that reality is entirely coextensive with language. …

Exploring The Influence Of The African Diaspora In Spain: A Short-Term Program Design, Stephanie Mccreary Oct 2018

Exploring The Influence Of The African Diaspora In Spain: A Short-Term Program Design, Stephanie Mccreary

Capstone Collection

Students of African descent are underrepresented in education abroad. Solutions must be found to ameliorate this problem, as it has become increasingly critical in our globalized world to gain intercultural sensitivity, linguistic skills, and knowledge, respect, and appreciation for other cultures. Students of African descent are missing out on the opportunity to develop these skills as a result of the barriers that often prevent them from engaging in this life-changing endeavor such as a lack of financial resources and little to no awareness that education abroad is available to them.

Short-term study abroad programs offer students of African descent who …

Hide And Seek: How And Why Peace Corps Panama Volunteers Conceal And Reveal Parts Of Their Social Identities And Perceived Impacts On Their Cultural Integration, Sara Sweeney Oct 2018

Hide And Seek: How And Why Peace Corps Panama Volunteers Conceal And Reveal Parts Of Their Social Identities And Perceived Impacts On Their Cultural Integration, Sara Sweeney

Capstone Collection

Hide and Seekexplores Peace Corps’ role in Panama and details the unique opportunities that Peace Corps Volunteers have to integrate and experience remote communities of the Indigenous tribe known as the Ngäbe Bugle. The main research question of this paper is derived from the challenges that Volunteers in Panama commonly face upon arriving to their communities and presenting themselves to their community members. I will discuss how Volunteers process the cultural differences they experience in their communities, how they respond to them, and whether they choose to conceal or reveal parts of their social identities to their community members. …

A Christian Oasis: The Role Of Christianity And Custom In The Laws Of Ethiopia, Cyril A. Heron Oct 2018

A Christian Oasis: The Role Of Christianity And Custom In The Laws Of Ethiopia, Cyril A. Heron

Cornell International Law Journal

Part I of this Note will analyze the history of Ethiopia’s legal system.

Part II of this Note focuses on modern Ethiopia and seeks to scrutinize Ethiopia’s Civil Code, Constitution, and other legislation. Written into the new constitution of Ethiopia is a declaration of secularism, similar to the United States and South Africa. Yet, in a nation that has existed as a Christian state for at least a millennium, it is nigh on impossible for Ethiopia to fully divest itself of its cultural mores with mere constitutional edict. The question is, therefore, what is to be made of traditional beliefs …

Peaze Up! Adaptation, Innovation, And Variation In German Hip Hop Discourse, Matt Garley Oct 2018

Peaze Up! Adaptation, Innovation, And Variation In German Hip Hop Discourse, Matt Garley

Publications and Research

In this study, I investigate the stylistic use of various forms of the hip hop leave-taking peace in a 12.5-million-word corpus (2000-2011) of German-language Internet hip hop discussions. The English orthography is compared with a number of hybrid variants including, e.g., , , and . I analyze the distribution of these variants over time by comparison to use of the form in an American hip hop forum. I complement these results with a qualitative analysis of peace and its variants as situated in discourse, drawing a connection between linguistic features, discursive use, and corpus distribution. The discourse of German hip …

Emojis And The Law, Eric Goldman Oct 2018

Emojis And The Law, Eric Goldman

Washington Law Review

Emojis are an increasingly important way we express ourselves. Though emojis may be cute and fun, their usage can lead to misunderstandings with significant legal stakes—such as whether someone should be obligated by contract, liable for sexual harassment, or sent to jail. Our legal system has substantial experience interpreting new forms of content, so it should be equipped to handle emojis. Nevertheless, some special attributes of emojis create extra interpretative challenges. This Article identifies those attributes and proposes how courts should handle them. One particularly troublesome interpretative challenge arises from the different ways platforms depict emojis that are nominally standardized …

Idle Talk, Deadly Talk: The Uses Of Gossip In Caribbean Literature, Ana B. Rodriguez Navas Oct 2018

Idle Talk, Deadly Talk: The Uses Of Gossip In Caribbean Literature, Ana B. Rodriguez Navas

Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Chaucer called it "spiritual manslaughter"; Barthes and Benjamin deemed it dangerous linguistic nihilism. But gossip-long derided and dismissed by writers and intellectuals-is far from frivolous. In Idle Talk, Deadly Talk, Ana Rodríguez Navas reveals gossip to be an urgent, utilitarian, and deeply political practice-a means of staging the narrative tensions, and waging the narrative battles, that mark Caribbean politics and culture.

From the calypso singer's superficially innocent rhymes to the vicious slanders published in Trujillo-era gossip columns, words have been weapons, elevating one person or group at the expense of another. Revising the overly gendered existing critical frame, Rodríguez …

Are Beach Bondaries Enforceable? Real-Time Locational Uncertainty And The Right To Exclude, Josh Eagle Oct 2018

Are Beach Bondaries Enforceable? Real-Time Locational Uncertainty And The Right To Exclude, Josh Eagle

Washington Law Review

Over the past few decades, landowners have tried to use the First, Fourth, and Fifth Amendments to fully privatize the upper, dry-sand part of the beach. If these efforts were to succeed, there would be a host of negative consequences, and not just for surfers. In most states in which beaches are economically important, including California, Florida, New Jersey and Texas, privatized dry sand would have a significant impact on public access. This Article explores the possibility that courts and the public can put an end to the beach privatization movement simply by pointing to the common law of waterfront …

A Mixed Method Study Examining Corrective Reading Implementation Models In An Urban Midwest School District, Claudette Denean Vaughn Oct 2018

A Mixed Method Study Examining Corrective Reading Implementation Models In An Urban Midwest School District, Claudette Denean Vaughn

Dissertations

In this mixed methods study, the researcher analyzed three school years of third through fifth-grade students’ reading scores on the NWEA MAP reading test to determine possible differences in students’ reading growth relative to the instructional delivery model used to provide Corrective Reading as supplemental reading intervention. Students received Corrective Reading intervention with the classroom teacher, the afterschool teacher (both large groups), or in small-groups with the Title I Reading Teacher. Five elementary school principals and 15 teachers answered interview questions related to experiences with Corrective Reading, perceptions of student academic and behavioral outcomes, and perceptions of the three instructional …

Stories To The Remote Reader: Shaping Cultural Narratives In "Do Not Say We Have Nothing" And "Their Eyes Were Watching God", Hannah Perry Oct 2018

Stories To The Remote Reader: Shaping Cultural Narratives In "Do Not Say We Have Nothing" And "Their Eyes Were Watching God", Hannah Perry

English Senior Capstone

The events of Do Not Say We Have Nothing by Madeleine Thien and Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston depict characters who, through subversive approaches to storytelling and meaning-making, refute the stereotypes attributed to them by oppressive sociopolitical systems. Whether the story extends through families and generations in China or simply from one friend to another on a porch in Eatonville, Florida, the story complicates listeners’ initial assumptions about individual and cultural mechanisms.

American Sign Language Interpreters And Their Influence On The Hearing World, Madison Groat Oct 2018

American Sign Language Interpreters And Their Influence On The Hearing World, Madison Groat

Senior Honors Theses

This honors thesis is going to discuss the hearing community’s perception of American Sign Language and by association the hearing community’s perception of the Deaf community. For most of the hearing community their only interaction with American Sign Language is through watching an interpreter perform at their job. They personally have no physical interactions with the language. Even though they have never personally used the language or attempted to interact with the Deaf community they will draw their own conclusions about sign language and the Deaf community. The conclusions that are assumed tend to be incorrect. Early on in the …
