Una Soldado En Cada Hija: An Analysis Of Women's Illicit Participation In The Mexican Revolution, Edrea Maria Mendoza Quintero
Una Soldado En Cada Hija: An Analysis Of Women's Illicit Participation In The Mexican Revolution, Edrea Maria Mendoza Quintero
LSU Master's Theses
Women’s contributions during the violent phase of the Mexican Revolution (1910-1917) have historically been kept in the shadows. When stories of their heroism were finally brought to light, what emerged was a new brand of heroine: the soldadera. She was either a loyal camp follower or a brave soldier. These women’s stories are remarkable, but the contributions of other women were often overlooked because they did not fit the soldadera mold. Some of those women were journalists and activists, others were nurses. As time has passed, these other women have also received their due credit for their involvement in the …

“Catching The Fox Unaware”—Japanese Radio Denial And Deception And The Attack On Pearl Harbor, Robert J. Hanyok
“Catching The Fox Unaware”—Japanese Radio Denial And Deception And The Attack On Pearl Harbor, Robert J. Hanyok
Naval War College Review
In the months before the Pearl Harbor attack, a comprehensive radio denial and deception plan fed the Americans information that seemed to confirm that the Imperial Japanese Navy was doing what it had exercised for decades—awaiting the attack of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. But Admiral Yamamoto had changed the script.
1979 - The California Water Atlas
1979 - The California Water Atlas
Miscellaneous Documents and Reports
The atlas was developed as an attempt to provide the average citizen with a single-volume point of access to understanding how water works in the State of California. It addressed treatments of every aspect of water supply, delivery, and use in California, the nature of the water environment, the changes mankind has made in that environment, the history of water development, the operation of the major natural and artificial water systems, the relationship of water pricing to water consumption, the uses of water in industry, recreation, and energy development, the problems of water quality, and the current (1979) and emerging …

The Contemplative-Prophetic Spirituality Of Thomas Merton: Its Relevance For The Consecrated Life In India, Fabian Jose
The Contemplative-Prophetic Spirituality Of Thomas Merton: Its Relevance For The Consecrated Life In India, Fabian Jose
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
Consecrated life in the Catholic Church is a vital and healing presence in Indian society. Religious men and women make an integral contribution to the society through their institutions in the fields of education, spirituality, medical care, social services, and other charitable activities. In the present context of India, however, consecrated men and women can experience challenges of relevance and identity in their vocations. These concerns have their basis in the fundamental need for a renewal of religious life itself in India, one which is imbued with a Christ-centered spirituality and reflects the prophetic charism that marks apostolic religious life. …
Belief In A Secular Age: Charles Taylor, John Henry Newman, And The New Evangelization, David C. Paternostro
Belief In A Secular Age: Charles Taylor, John Henry Newman, And The New Evangelization, David C. Paternostro
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
We are currently living in what has been dubbed “a secular age.” Religious affiliation has gone down, leading to a phenomenon in the West known as “the rise of the Nones.” At the same time, from the time of the Gospels, the Church understands herself to be charged by Jesus Christ with the obligation to “make disciples of all nations” (Mt. 28:19). Recent popes have likewise affirmed that we are obliged to go out and propose faith in Jesus to the world. Beginning with John Paul II, a “new evangelization” has been proposed, where the Church evangelizes and makes disciples …

Social Studies/History Curricula In Ghana, Razak Dwomoh
2018 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity – Documents
Abstract
This research will examine how social studies developed within the curricula within Ghana. I will report this in USA and juxtapose with Ghana and other post-colonial African countries. The study assesses the quantity of the content of history as it is merged with social studies curricula, its implications on students, economy, and educational sectors in Ghana. It is noted that majority of students at tertiary levels in Ghana would find it difficult to give detail information about Ghana’s history and Ghana’s historical place in the world when probed. Six post-colonial African countries’ social studies/history curricula are examined on the …

Ripple Effect: An Examination Of Surfing As A Force For Positive, Lasting Personal And Societal Change, Sam A. Hayworth
Ripple Effect: An Examination Of Surfing As A Force For Positive, Lasting Personal And Societal Change, Sam A. Hayworth
Honors Theses
This study aims to demonstrate how the spiritual, sacred, and metaphysical components of surfing empower the activity as a force for positive, personal and societal change in a community. While many surfers are drawn to surfing for its spiritual attributes, traceable to its roots in ancient Polynesia, there are many others who embrace the sport for purely non-spiritual reasons. Quantitative data was collected by the research team to show how the differing views of these two groups of surfers affect three main areas: environmental ethics, personal growth and maturation, and general community outreach. The results of the study proved all …

The History Of The Future: A Creative 26th Century Article On The 2016 Presidential Election, Spencer J. Chowning
Honors Theses
As technology has grown in recent decades, many fields of study have been affected. This thesis will consider how technology might continue to impact the field of the historian and what historical research and writing might look like in the distant future. This project will attempt to demonstrate the potential sources of a future historian, how those sources might have been stored, how historians might interpret those sources, and what historical writing itself might look like. This thesis will demonstrate these aspects in a creative manner in the form of a future historical scholarly article from the 26th century …

Global Questions About Rent And The Longue Durée Of Urban Power, 1848 To The Present, Jo Guldi
Global Questions About Rent And The Longue Durée Of Urban Power, 1848 To The Present, Jo Guldi
History Faculty Publications
This article examines the forces, public and private, that have exerted political power over the longue durée of the modern city since 1848. The article identifies three major turning points that contextualize the modern moment: the rise of democratic movements of 1848 and their gradual targeting of city governments; the rise of an expert-managed, urban reform state beginning in 1870; and the birth of neoliberal state, from 1974 to the present. The article positions the knowledge of urban history within the rise of democratic, participatory movements concerned with opening, replicating, and publicly analyzing governmental data.
Public Requitals: Corrective, Retributive, And Distributive Justice, Bailey Kuklin
Public Requitals: Corrective, Retributive, And Distributive Justice, Bailey Kuklin
Cleveland State Law Review
The currently predominant view of public requitals for criminal behavior draws on the deontic guidance provided rather sketchily by Kant’s writings. He offers a broad, formal framework for the mandate to respect others and punish those who criminally violate the mandate. As ethical beings, people have the duty to avoid invading the "autonomy space" of others that is delineated by maxims designed to reasonably and fairly balance everyone’s equal liberty and security interests. Once society settles on a complete and coherent set of maxims that determines the reach of one’s autonomy space, it must then turn to maxims that address …

Black Lives Matter Otherwise All Lives Do Not Matter, Biko Agozino
Black Lives Matter Otherwise All Lives Do Not Matter, Biko Agozino
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
Long before three African American women registered the twitter handle, #BlackLivesMatter, and started sending out tweets that helped to mobilize the spontaneous outrage against the impunity that followed the killings of unarmed black people by police officers and by vigilante in the US, there was always a rich history of resistance against criminal justice oppression by people of African descent and their allies. Apologists for white supremacist violence tend to reject the truism that Black Lives Matter by countering with All Lives Matter as if the later could hold if the former is rejected. In other words, since All Lives …

Analyzing The Differentiation Among State Medical Marijuana Policies By Examining State Policies & Trends, Richard Furlong
Analyzing The Differentiation Among State Medical Marijuana Policies By Examining State Policies & Trends, Richard Furlong
Political Science Theses and Capstones
Support for marijuana has been growing nationwide. This increased support has gained a lot of momentum since the late 1990s when California became the first state to legalize marijuana for medical use by enacting Proposition 215, or the Compassionate Use Act. Since the enactment of Proposition 215, 28 more states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana for medicinal use. I look into why states have begun to adopt these laws, and what makes these states differ throughout the country in the timeliness of their actions. I assembled data to examine a variety of state policies to attempt to …

Punks In The Church: The Relationship Between The Punk Subculture And Church In East Germany, Ruth A. Aardsma Benton
Punks In The Church: The Relationship Between The Punk Subculture And Church In East Germany, Ruth A. Aardsma Benton
Masters Theses
A punk subculture emerged in East Germany during the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was an expression of their disillusionment with life, their frustrations with the government, and their pessimistic view of a future that seemed pre-planned. The subculture refused to conform, disengaged from the established system, and expressed their views through song lyrics and other acts of defiance. In the eyes of the state, punks were a threat. The subculture turned to the East German Protestant churches for shelter. The churches occupied a unique place within East German society because the government had granted the churches limited free …

The Resilient Foundation Of Democracy: The Legal Deconstruction Of The Washington Posts's Condemnation Of Edward Snowden, Hanna Kim
Indiana Law Journal
On September 17, 2016, The Washington Post (“the Post”) made history by being the first paper to ever call for the criminal prosecution of its own source —Edward Snowden. Yet, two years prior to this editorial, the Post accepted the 2014 Pulitzer Prize in Public Service for its “revelation of widespread secret surveillance by the National Security Agency”—an honor which would not have been bestowed had Snowden not leaked the documents through this news outlet. The other three major media outlets that received and published Snowden’s documents and findings—The Guardian, The New York Times, and The Intercept—all have taken the …
