Adolescent Obesity: Current Concept Of Management, Suteerojntrakool O. Nov 2018

Adolescent Obesity: Current Concept Of Management, Suteerojntrakool O.

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Obesity is characterized by excessive accumulation of fat in the body which leads to other health problems associated with risk of complications in childhood and increased morbidity and mortality throughout the adult life. Despite the fact that prevention is ultimately the best method to solve the problem, management of obese adolescent still remains a challenge. Physicians must keep the balance between weight reduction and maintaining normal physical growth rate. Presently, multiple approaches and strategies are used for the treatment of obesity including lifestyle modifications, dietary management, anti-obesity drugs and bariatric surgery. Thus, physicians should have the basic understanding of these …

Bespoke Discovery, Jessica Erickson Nov 2018

Bespoke Discovery, Jessica Erickson

Vanderbilt Law Review

The U.S. legal system gives contracting parties significant freedom to customize the procedures that will govern their future disputes.' With forum selection clauses, parties can decide where they will litigate future disputes.2 With fee-shifting provisions, they can choose who will pay for these suits. 3 And with arbitration clauses, they can make upfront decisions to opt out of the traditional legal system altogether.4 Parties can also waive their right to appeal,5 their right to a jury trial,6 and their right to file a class action.7 Bespoke procedure, in other words, is commonplace in the United States. Far less common, however, …

A Proposal To End Discovery Abuse, Alexandra D. Lahav Nov 2018

A Proposal To End Discovery Abuse, Alexandra D. Lahav

Vanderbilt Law Review

When commentators, lawyers, judges, politicians, business people-anyone really-are looking to heap abuse on part of the civil process, they complain about discovery. But in truth, civil discovery is treated cruelly and often misunderstood. This is the case for two reasons. First, we do not know much about what actually happens in civil discovery in different types of cases. As a result, people seem to fill in the gaps of knowledge with their priors, which are, in turn, dependent on a few examples that loom large in their imaginations. Whatever limited reliable evidence about discovery we do have-and it is indeed …

Aligning Incentives And Cost Allocation In Discovery, Jonathan R. Nash, Joanna Shepherd Nov 2018

Aligning Incentives And Cost Allocation In Discovery, Jonathan R. Nash, Joanna Shepherd

Vanderbilt Law Review

In this Article, we explain that either a rule requiring both parties to share the costs of discovery ("cost-sharing rule") or a rule creating a risk for both parties that they will bear the entire costs of discovery ("cost-shifting rule") would minimize many of the negative incentives that exist under either a strict producer-pays or requester pays rule. Whereas the producer-pays rule creates incentives for excessive discovery because requesters can externalize the costs of requests and use discovery to impose costs on producing parties to force settlement, requesters under a cost-sharing or cost-shifting rule cannot externalize the costs of discovery …

Percutaneous Transhepatic Cholecysto-Cholangiography (Ptcc): An Alternative To Intraoperative Cholangiography In High Risk Infants Suspect For Biliary Atresia, Joseph Sujka, Katrina L. Weaver, Ashwini S. Poola, Douglas C. Rivard, Richard J. Hendrickson Nov 2018

Percutaneous Transhepatic Cholecysto-Cholangiography (Ptcc): An Alternative To Intraoperative Cholangiography In High Risk Infants Suspect For Biliary Atresia, Joseph Sujka, Katrina L. Weaver, Ashwini S. Poola, Douglas C. Rivard, Richard J. Hendrickson

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Infants with cholestasis and conjugated hyperbilirubinemia persisting beyond two weeks of age must be evaluated promptly to exclude biliary atresia (BA). BA progresses to cirrhosis and liver failure if portoenterostomy (PE) is not performed in a timely fashion. The gold standard to diagnose BA is intraoperative cholangiography (IOC) via laparotomy. Neonates that are critically ill or have significant co-morbidities may be high-risk surgical candidates, and thus minimizing operative time or avoiding an operation may be beneficial. An additional modality for excluding BA is percutaneous transhepatic cholecysto-cholangiography (PTCC). We present three infants undergoing PTCC by interventional radiology (IR) revealing patency of …

Citrus is considered one of the most important fruit crops globally due to its contribution to food and nutritional security. However, the production of citrus has recently been in decline due to many biological, environmental, and socio-economic constraints. Amongst the biological ones, pests and diseases play a major role in threatening citrus quantity and quality. The most damaging disease in Kenya, is the African citrus greening disease (ACGD) or Huanglongbing (HLB) which is transmitted by the African citrus triozid (ACT), Trioza erytreae. HLB in Kenya is reported to have had the greatest impact on citrus production in the highlands, causing …

Foraging parasitoids use chemical signals in host recognition and selection processes. Although, the volatiles play a relevant role in the localization by parasitoids of their hosts feeding on plants, the host identification process for acceptance occurs mainly during contact between the parasitoid and its host where host products related to feeding activities, fecal pellets and oral secretions, play a crucial role. The purpose of this study was to identify the nature of the contact kairomone(s) that mediate the acceptance for oviposition of the parasitoid Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera, Braconidae), which was released in Kenya in 1993 to control the invasive …

Response Of Common Bean (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.) To Nitrogen, Phosphorus And Rhizobia Inoculation Across Variable Soils In Zimbabwe, Vongai Chekanai, Regis Chikowo, Bernard Vanlauwe

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Common bean is an important crop with potential to curb malnutrition in poor Sub-Saharan African populations. Yields of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are, however poor, limited by low soil phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N) and poor biological N2-fixation. On-farm experiments were carried out to study the effect of N, P and rhizobia inoculation on common bean yield and yield components during the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 cropping seasons in Eastern Zimbabwe. Experiments were conducted on five farmers’ fields located in two agroecologies; three fields were considered to be degraded with soil organic carbon (SOC) < 4 g kg−1 and available P < 6 mg kg−1, while the two non–degraded sites had SOC > 7 g kg−1 and available P > 15 …

Fall 2017 Symposium: The Challenge Of Crime In A Free Society: Fifty Years Later, Roger Fairfax

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

My longstanding interest in the Johnson Crime Commission traces back to my earlier scholarly work on the history of criminal law reform movements, going back to the progressive criminal justice reform agenda in the early twentieth century and the activities of private law-reform coalitions and government-sponsored crime commissions during the interwar period, including the Wickersham Commission and the American Law Institute's various model code projects. This research eventually led me to the Johnson Commission, the subject of this Symposium.

Water Security For Texas: A Post-Secondary Education Pathway For The Water Workforce, Rudolph A. Rosen, Luis A. Cifuentes, James Fischer, Howard Marquise, John C. Tracey

Water Resources Science and Technology Faculty Publications (Archived)

Water and wastewater industry leaders in Texas and throughout the United States have expressed concern over high rates of retirement eligibility and difficulties finding and attracting workers ready to fill job openings, especially for work in smaller systems. In late January 2018, the U.S. Government Accountability Office released a report on water workforce readiness and a bill was introduced in the U.S. Senate to establish a water infrastructure workforce development program. Concern over existing education of workers in water and demographic information projecting future workforce readiness are commonly cited as signaling a coming crisis for the water industry. An alignment …

Biological Activity Of A Tertiary Amine Plant Growth Regulator, Bmve, In Arabidopsis Thaliana And Wheat (Triticum Aestivum), Jaspinder Singh

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Plant growth regulators are synthetic compounds that influence plant growth and development and can increase growth, yield, and nutritive value of food crops. Research in the past has shown that a class of plant growth regulators known collectively as substituted tertiary amines have the potential to increase crop productivity, photosynthetic efficiency, and overall plant vigor. However, earlier efficacy studies that involved spraying plants were sometimes inconsistent or showed only minimal benefits. A new delivery method involving seed application of tertiary amines before sowing has shown promise in field trials for multiple crop species (US patent 9464283) (Yokoyama, Chan, Oyama, & …

Construction Management

Summer internships are a valuable way for implementing practical knowledge in the construction industry. Students can apply what they have learned during the school year and visualize the reality of how construction is managed. This project will research what student-athletes typically invest their time in over summer and the construction company’s connection to the student-athlete department. The analysis will identify if there is a need to propose a program that can improve the relationship between the construction management and student-athlete departments. Two surveys were conducted to collect information about student-athletes summer activity history and their perspective of internship experience, as …

Studies On The Physicochemical Characterization Of Flours And Protein Hydrolysates From Common Beans, Hollman Andres Motta Romero

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Pulses represent a rich source of nutrition and have several potential health benefits such as the reduction of the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and diabetes. Beans from the species Phaseolus vulgaris and Cicer arietinum are important crops raised in some regions of the United States, including Western Nebraska. Nevertheless, the traditional preparation procedures involved in the cooking of these beans are tedious and time-consuming, thus leading to the underutilization of these resources. Therefore, the present work focused on evaluating alternative utilizations of these beans in order to improve their economic value.

One alternative to improve the consumption of …

Natural history collections spanning multiple decades provide fundamental historical baselines to measure and understand changing biodiversity. New technologies such as next generation DNA sequencing have considerably increased the potential of museum specimens to address significant questions regarding the impact of environmental changes on host and parasite/pathogen dynamics. We developed a new technique to identify intestinal helminth parasites and applied it to shrews (Eulipotyphla: Soricidae) because they are ubiquitous, occupy diverse habitats, and host a diverse and abundant parasite fauna. Notably, we included museum specimens preserved in various ways to explore the efficacy of using metabarcoding analyses that may enable identification …

Triatominae bugs are the vectors of Chagas disease, a major concern to public health especially in Latin America, where vector-borne Chagas disease has undergone resurgence due mainly to diminished triatomine control in many endemic municipalities. Although the majority of Triatominae species occurs in the Americas, species belonging to the genus Linshcosteus occur in India, and species belonging to the Triatoma rubrofasciata complex have been also identified in Africa, the Middle East, South-East Asia, and in the Western Pacific. Not all of Triatominae species have been found to be infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, but the possibility of establishing vector transmission …

E-Notice, Christine P. Bartholomew

Duke Law Journal

Social media platforms and smartphone manufacturers face class action lawsuits, but how open are federal courts to using these very technologies to notify members of a class action? This Article details the results from an empirical analysis of over 2700 federal class notice decisions. It finds class notice changing, but very slowly. Supreme Court precedent demands a dynamic standard for class action notice. However, fears of change, technology, and imprecision keep courts tethered to twentieth-century modes of communication. This judicial fear encumbers E-Notice—at a cost to the utility of class action procedures.

Limited Liability And The Known Unknown, Michael Simkovic Nov 2018

Limited Liability And The Known Unknown, Michael Simkovic

Duke Law Journal

Limited liability is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, limited lia-bility may help overcome investors’ risk aversion and facilitate capital formation and economic growth. On the other hand, limited liability is widely believed to contribute to excessive risk-taking and externaliza-tion of losses to the public. The externalization problem can be mitigated imperfectly through existing mechanisms such as regulation, mandatory insurance, and minimum capital requirements. These mechanisms would be more effective if information asymmetries between industry and poli-cymakers were reduced. Private businesses typically have better infor-mation about industry-specific risks than policymakers.

The already high demand for more bandwidth usage has been growing rapidly. Access network traffic is usually bursty in nature and the present traffic trend is mostly video-dominant. This motivates the need for higher transmission rates in the system. At the same time, the deployment costs and maintenance expenditures have to be reasonable. Therefore, Passive Optical Networks (PON) are considered promising next-generation access technologies. As the existing PON standards are not suitable to support future-PON services and applications, the FSAN (Full Service Access Network) group and the ITU-T (Telecommunication Standardization Sector of the International Telecommunication Union) have worked on developing …
