Has Patronage Lost Its Punch In Malaysia?, Sebastian Carl Dettman, Meredith L. Weiss Nov 2018

Has Patronage Lost Its Punch In Malaysia?, Sebastian Carl Dettman, Meredith L. Weiss

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The personalistic linkages that generally define Malaysian politics come into sharp relief when candidates confront the imperative of winning office. Malaysia’s 14th general election (GE14), as other previous iterations, saw politicians emphasize their ‘personal touch’ and offer a barrage of targeted promises. Yet these relationships are not confined to elections and reflect deep connections between voters and politicians – not only for politicians in the long-dominant Barisan Nasional coalition, but also for the newly victorious Pakatan Harapan parties. The authors of this article draw on original survey data to show the embeddedness of these relationships beyond elections. In GE14, the …

Studying The Relationship Between Performance And Z-Scores For Manufacturing Firms In Singapore, See Liang Foo, Shaakalya Pathak

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Singapore is a key leading economy in the Asia Pacific region. This study examines the relationship between the financial health, as measured by the Altman Z-Score, and corporate performance, as measured by the Return on Equity (ROE), of listed manufacturing companies in this market. A linear regression has been conducted between these variables to determine the magnitude and direction of their relationships. The trends of Z-Scores over a five-year period have also been analysed. The analysis covers the period from 2013 to 2017 (inclusive) and yields a statistically positive correlation between ROE and the Z-Score for the market. Singapore registered relatively …

Influence Of Feeding-Damaged Plants On The Oviposition Responses Within A Community Of Female Moths, Eric Siaw Ntiri, Paul Andre Calatayud, Boaz Musyoka, Johnnie Van Den Berg, Bruno Pierre Le Ru Nov 2018

Influence Of Feeding-Damaged Plants On The Oviposition Responses Within A Community Of Female Moths, Eric Siaw Ntiri, Paul Andre Calatayud, Boaz Musyoka, Johnnie Van Den Berg, Bruno Pierre Le Ru

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Competitive or facilitative interactions characterise phytophagous insect communities that utilise the same resources. These interactions are often mediated by the host plant. Plant mediation influences the oviposition choices that a community of insects, sharing the same host plant make. In this context, the oviposition choices of females within a community of lepidopteran cereal stemborers namely Busseola fusca, Sesamia calamistis and Chilo partellus were studied in plant choice-experiments under laboratory and field conditions. Gravid females of each species were presented with a choice between maize plants infested by conspecific or heterospecific larvae and uninfested maize plants. The number of eggs and …

Health Behavior Among Men Occupying Multiple Family Roles And The Moderating Effects Of Perceived Partner Relationship Quality, Nicole Depasquale, Courtney A. Polenick, Jesse Hinde, Jeremy Bray, Steven H. Zarit, Phyllis Moen, Leslie B. Hammer, David M. Almeida

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Men in the U.S. are increasingly involved in their children’s lives and currently represent 40% of informal caregivers to dependent relatives or friends aged 18 years or older. Yet, much more is known about the health effects of varying family role occupancies for women relative to men. The present research sought to fill this empirical gap by first comparing the health behavior (sleep duration, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, exercise, fast food consumption) of men who only occupy partner roles and partnered men who also fill father, informal caregiver, or both father and informal caregiver (i.e., sandwiched) roles. The moderating effects …

Computational Exploration Of Gerontology-Related Topics Shared On Social Media Platform Twitter, Victor P. Cornet Ms, Michin Hong

Health Services and Informatics Research

Twitter, a popular Internet social media platform, has become a significant medium for sharing information and ideas about various topics, including aging and older adults. While studies have been conducted to examine stigma or perception about specific diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and seizure on Twitter, there has been little effort to identify general themes of Twitter posts related to aging and older adults. This exploratory study attempts to answer this need by conducting a topic analysis of posts shared on Twitter posts about aging and older adults in English. We collected 328,568 English posts from Twitter posted between 07/01/18 …

What A Discursive Understanding Of Interprofessional Team Meetings Might Reveal: An Exploration Of Intellectual (Learning) Disability Managers' Performances., C Smart, N Froomberg, T Auburn Nov 2018

What A Discursive Understanding Of Interprofessional Team Meetings Might Reveal: An Exploration Of Intellectual (Learning) Disability Managers' Performances., C Smart, N Froomberg, T Auburn

School of Psychology

Clinical and academic understandings of interprofessional working are focused mainly on individual factors such as knowledge about different professional roles, and organisational opportunities for interprofessional working (IPW). Less research has examined what happens between people at an interactional level, that is, how interprofessional working is conducted in everyday face-to-face interactions in clinical practice. The current paper proposes a discursive framework for understanding what constitutes IPW in interprofessional meetings at this interactional level. Clinical effectiveness meetings held in intellectual (learning) disability services were used as an example site for IPW. The analysis explored how agenda change points were negotiated, appropriate as …

Beyond Maximum Grade: Modernising The Assessment And Reporting Of Adverse Events In Haematological Malignancies, G Thanarajasingam, Lm Minasian, F Baron, Et Al Nov 2018

Beyond Maximum Grade: Modernising The Assessment And Reporting Of Adverse Events In Haematological Malignancies, G Thanarajasingam, Lm Minasian, F Baron, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

Tremendous progress in treatment and outcomes has been achieved across the whole range of haematological malignancies in the past two decades. Although cure rates for aggressive malignancies have increased, nowhere has progress been more impactful than in the management of typically incurable forms of haematological cancer. Population-based data have shown that 5-year survival for patients with chronic myelogenous and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, indolent B-cell lymphomas, and multiple myeloma has improved markedly. This improvement is a result of substantial changes in disease management strategies in these malignancies. Several haematological malignancies are now chronic diseases that are treated with continuously administered therapies …

Children Are Crying And Dying While The Supreme Court Is Hiding: Why Public Schools Should Have Broad Authority To Regulate Off-Campus Bullying "Speech", Jennifer Butwin Nov 2018

Children Are Crying And Dying While The Supreme Court Is Hiding: Why Public Schools Should Have Broad Authority To Regulate Off-Campus Bullying "Speech", Jennifer Butwin

Fordham Law Review

Bullying has long been a concern for students, parents, teachers, and school administrators. But technological advances—including the internet, cell phones, and social media—have transformed the nature of bullying and allow “cyberbullies” to extend their reach far beyond the schoolhouse gate. The U.S. Supreme Court established that schools may regulate on-campus speech if the speech creates a substantial disruption of, or material interference with, school activities. However, the Court has yet to rule on a school’s ability to regulate students’ off-campus bullying speech. This Note examines how various courts have approached the issue, analyzes the current circuit split, and ultimately proposes …

Home Rules: The Case For Local Administrative Procedure, Casey Adams Nov 2018

Home Rules: The Case For Local Administrative Procedure, Casey Adams

Fordham Law Review

Administrative law is critical to the modern practice of governance. Administrative rules fill the gaps in statutes left open by lawmakers, allow agencies to exercise legislative grants of authority and discretion, and give agencies with subject-matter expertise and frontline experience the opportunity to promulgate detailed standards and requirements in their designated issue areas. Adjudication allows an agency to dispose of matters and disputes formally before it, whether under its rules or another source of law. While agencies at every level of government—federal, state, and local— engage in administrative action, legal scholarship on administrative law is almost exclusively focused on the …

"Wrongful Birth" Claims And The Paradox Of Parenting A Child With A Disability, Sofia Yakren Nov 2018

"Wrongful Birth" Claims And The Paradox Of Parenting A Child With A Disability, Sofia Yakren

Fordham Law Review

“Wrongful birth” is a controversial medical malpractice claim raised by the mother of a child born with a disability against a medical professional whose failure to provide adequate prenatal information denied her the chance to abort. Plaintiff-mothers are required to testify that, but for the defendant’s negligence, they would have terminated their pregnancy. Accordingly, alongside pro-life activists, disability rights advocates have opposed “wrongful birth” claims for stigmatizing and discriminating against people with disabilities by framing their very existence as a harm. Despite plaintiff-mothers’ need for caretaking resources, scholars have recommended solutions ranging from the wholesale elimination of the wrongful birth …

Totally Class-Less?: Examining Bristol-Myer's Applicability To Class Actions, Justin A. Stone Nov 2018

Totally Class-Less?: Examining Bristol-Myer's Applicability To Class Actions, Justin A. Stone

Fordham Law Review

In June 2017, the U.S. Supreme Court tightened the specific jurisdiction doctrine when it dismissed several plaintiffs’ claims in a mass tort action against pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) for lack of personal jurisdiction. The action was brought in a California state court and involved several hundred plaintiffs alleging that they were injured by Plavix, a drug BMS manufactures. The Supreme Court held that California could not constitutionally exercise personal jurisdiction over BMS as to the nonresident plaintiffs, who did not have an independent connection to California. While the nonresident plaintiffs argued that California had specific jurisdiction because their claims …

Extracting Drug-Drug Interactions With Character-Level And Dependency-Based Embeddings, John Cardiff, Liliya Akhtyamova

Conference Papers

The DDI track of TAC-2018 challenge addresses the problem of an information retrieval of drug-drug interactions on structured product labeling documents with discontinuous and overlapping entities. In this paper, we present our participation for event extraction subtask (Task 1). We used a supervised long-short-term memory (LSTM) network with conditional random fields decoding (LSTM-CRF) approach with an automatic exploring of words and characters features. Additional dependency-based information was integrated into word embeddings to allow better word representation. Our system performed with above median score.

Counting Members In My League: Mate Value Moderates Economic Effects Of Local Operational Sex Ratio, Zilin Yan Nov 2018

Counting Members In My League: Mate Value Moderates Economic Effects Of Local Operational Sex Ratio, Zilin Yan

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

When local operational sex ratio skews toward a larger proportion of same-sex to opposite-sex individuals, should members of the surplus sex increase or decrease (economic) efforts on reproduction? Past research yielded mixed results. In light of the fact that modern humans are highly mobile and can relocate to communities that may offer better reproductive prospects, it may not always be a given that individuals facing same-sex skewed local community will become current-oriented with regard to reproduction; instead, they may contemplate whether their efforts will pay off and decide whether they prefer to wait for better situations later. The present research …

Labour Research Conference 2018: Upskilling Of Mature Workers, Stephen Hoskins, Luca Facchinello

Research Collection School Of Economics

Many developed countries are approaching an era of ageing population due to an increase in longevity and decrease in fertility rates. Singapore is no exception, having one of the fastest ageing populations in Asia, which is driven by low fertility rates and the third longest life expectancy in the world. The number of elderly citizens, defined as those aged 65 and above, is expected to triple to 900,000 by 2030, making up about 28% of the total population in Singapore (Population SG, 2016). This changing population age profile, combined with a competitive labour market, means it makes business sense to …

Estimating Switching Costs With Market Share Data: An Application To Medicare Part D, Jung Won Yeo, Daniel P. Miller Nov 2018

Estimating Switching Costs With Market Share Data: An Application To Medicare Part D, Jung Won Yeo, Daniel P. Miller

Research Collection School Of Economics

Choice inertia and switching frictions are well-documented features of the demand for health insurance. In this paper, we estimate switching costs in the Medicare Part D market with aggregate market share data using standard discrete choice models for differentiated products. We consider various modelling assumptions: myopic and forward-looking consumers, and with and without random coefficients. Both myopic and forward-looking consumer models with no random coefficients yield switching cost estimates that closely match the actual average switching frequency, with implied dollar-valued switching costs of $1600 to $2000. We find the inclusion of random coefficients to the myopic consumer model results in …
