Transcriptional Profiling Identifies Potential Genes Associated With Multiple Biotic Stresses In Arabidopsis, Hibatullah Mustafa Al Ashram Nov 2018

Transcriptional Profiling Identifies Potential Genes Associated With Multiple Biotic Stresses In Arabidopsis, Hibatullah Mustafa Al Ashram

Biology Theses

Plants are exposed to many environmental stresses that affect their growth and development. These stresses include biotic stresses (organisms) and abiotic stresses (drought and salinity). Plants respond to these stresses by transcriptional reprogramming and different signaling pathways. Arabidopsis thaliana had shown great sensitivity to the biotic stress: Botrytis cinerea, Alternaria brassicicola, Pseudomonas syringae and the herbivore insect Pieris rapae. The overall goal is to identify common regulated genes that respond to all these biotic stresses to ultimately improve plant stress tolerance in Arabidopsis. The specific aims are to: (1) determine the regulated genes in response to an …

Identification Of Pathogens Associated With Mango Dieback Disease On Mango In The United Arab Emirates, Fatima Ali Hassan Kamil

Biology Theses

Dieback caused by the fungus Lasiodiplodia theobromae is an important disease on mango plantations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In this study, 53 actinobacterial isolates were obtained from mango rhizosphere soil in the UAE, of which 35 (66%) were classified as streptomycetes (SA) and 18 (34%) as non-streptomycetes (NSA). Among these isolates, 19 (12 SA and 7 NSA) showed antagonistic activities against L. theobromae associated with either the production of diffusible antifungal metabolites, extracellular cell-wall-degrading enzymes (CWDEs), or both. Using a “novel” mango fruit bioassay, all isolates were screened in vivo for their abilities to reduce lesion severity on …

Background: Many arboviruses transmitted by mosquitoes have been implicated as causative agents of both human and animal illnesses in East Africa. Although epidemics of arboviral emerging infectious diseases have risen in frequency in recent years, the extent to which mosquitoes maintain pathogens in circulation during inter-epidemic periods is still poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate whether arboviruses may be maintained by vertical transmission via immature life stages of different mosquito vector species. Methodology: We collected immature mosquitoes (egg, larva, pupa) on the shores and islands of Lake Baringo and Lake Victoria in western Kenya and reared them to adults. …

The Role Of Human Α7-Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors In Mediating Neuroprotective Action Of Curcumin, Eslam Mohammed Gaber Elnebrisi

Medical Education Dissertations

Curcumin is a polyphenolic compound isolated from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa. Curcumin has been demonstrated to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. Moreover, it has been shown to exhibit beneficial effects in the treatment of several neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. However, the molecular and cellular targets mediating the pharmacological actions of curcumin remain largely unknown. In this study, the effects of curcumin application on the functional properties of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, a prototype for ligand-gated ion channels were investigated. Using the two-electrode voltage clamp technique, the results showed that curcumin co-application caused a significant potentiation …

The People's Lawyer: The Role Of Attorney General In The Twenty-First Century, Mark J. Herring

University of Richmond Law Review

For the last five years, it has been my privilege to serve the people as their attorney general. The origin of the position of attorney general can be traced back centuries, but in a world that has become more interconnected, complex, and fast-paced, what does the role of a state attorney general entail in the twenty-first century and beyond? Is the proper role as a diligent but reactive defender of statutes and state agencies, or is there a deeper responsibility that calls for a more proactive and engaged use of its tools and authority? I have found that the job …

L2 Bone Quality In Osteoporosis: Biomed 1 Revisited, A Cresswell-Boyes, D Mills, Gr Davis, Alan Boyde

Peninsula Dental School

As a part of the European Union BIOMED I study “Assessment of Bone Quality in Osteoporosis,” Sixty-nine second lumbar vertebral body specimens (L2) were obtained post mortem from 32 women and 37 men (age 24–92 years). Our initial remit was to study variations in density of the calcified tissues by quantitative backscattered electron imaging (BSE-SEM). To this end, the para-sagittal bone slices were embedded in PMMA and block surfaces micro-milled and carbon coated. Many samples were re-polished to remove the carbon coat and stained with iodine vapour to permit simultaneous BSE imaging of non-mineralised tissues - especially disc, annulus, cartilage …

Genetics Of The Thrombomodulin-Endothelial Cell Protein C Receptor System And The Risk Of Early-Onset Ischemic Stroke, John W. Cole, Huichun Xu, Kathleen Ryan,, Thomas Jaworek, Nicole Dueke, Patrick Mcardle, Brady Gaynor,, Yu-Ching Cheng, Jeffrey O'Connell, Ayeesha Kamran Kamal

Section of Neurology

Background and Purpose: Polymorphisms in coagulation genes have been associated with early-onset ischemic stroke. Here we pursue an a priori hypothesis that genetic variation in the endothelial-based receptors of the thrombomodulin-protein C system (THBD and PROCR) may similarly be associated with early-onset ischemic stroke. We explored this hypothesis utilizing a multi-stage design of discovery and replication.

Methods: Discovery was performed in the Genetics-of-Early-Onset Stroke (GEOS) Study, a biracial population-based case-control study of ischemic stroke among men and women aged 15-49 including 829 cases of first ischemic stroke (42.2% African-American) and 850 age-comparable stroke-free controls (38.1% African-American). Twenty-four single-nucleotide-polymorphisms …

Efforts to recycle organic wastes using black soldier fly (BSF) Hermetia illucens into highnutrient biomass that constitutes a sustainable fat (biodiesel) and high-quality protein ingredient in animal feeds have recently gained momentum worldwide. However, there is little information on the most suitable rearing conditions for growth, development and survivorship of these flies, which is a prerequisite for mass production technologies. We evaluated the physiological requirements for growth and reproduction of H. illucens on two diets [spent grains supplemented with brewers' yeast (D1) and un-supplemented (D2)]. Development rates at nine constant temperatures (10-42°C) were fitted to temperature-dependent linear and non-linear day-degree …

Sorption Of Benzene, Toluene And Ethylbenzene By Plasticized Poly (Ethyl Methacrylate) Using Quartz Crystal Microbalance At 298.15k, Kiranpreet Kaur

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Quartz crystal microbalances (QCM) are chemical sensors used for liquid and vapor sensing. In this thesis work, plasticized poly (ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) coated QCM was used to study sorption behavior of benzene, ethylbenzene and toluene in respective polymer at 298.15K. Poly (ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) is a promising polymer with solubility parameter close to BTEX compounds, but it's glassy and rigid nature at room temperature make it less sensitive. The addition of plasticizers (Diisononyl cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylate (DINCH) and Diisooctyl azelate (DIOA)) lowers the glass transition temperature, provides flexibility and thus increases the free volume of the polymer to enhance analyte sorption. In …

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

Survivors of sex trafficking who were forced into drug use as victims are in need of social services to treat their drug dependency and other mental disorders. Access to social services is a human rights issue that must be acted upon by state and federal officials. The law, however, requires approval of the T-Visa for receipt of benefits. Along with the T-visa application process, the applicant (human trafficking survivor) must be willing to assist in every reasonable way in the investigation and prosecution of the trafficker. The authors argue that drug dependency treatment and other social service benefits should be …

Stress Of Trying Daily Therapy Interventions, Emily Kathryn Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

This study is focused on clients' daily experiencing of stress, and measures how this stress might affect their implementation of ideas and recommendations from therapy. Typically, clients attend therapy with the intention of making positive changes. Part of the therapeutic process involves clients completing therapeutic work in their daily lives (Conklin, Strunk, Cooper, 2017); however, stressful tasks and other elements often preclude this therapeutic work from occurring (Kazantzis & L'Abate, 2005). In this study we examine which interventions from therapy are most likely to be attempted at home, and the level of stress in making these attempts. A series of …
