Background: Mutations in the three-prime repair exonuclease 1 (TREX1) gene have been associated with neurological diseases, including Retinal Vasculopathy with Cerebral Leukoencephalopathy (RVCL). However, the endogenous expression of TREX1 in human brain has not been studied. Methods: We produced a rabbit polyclonal antibody (pAb) to TREX1 to characterize TREX1 by Western blotting (WB) of cell lysates from normal controls and subjects carrying an RVCL frame-shift mutation. Dual staining was performed to determine cell types expressing TREX1 in human brain tissue. TREX1 distribution in human brain was further evaluated by immunohistochemical analyses of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded samples from normal controls and patients …

No. 16: Cheap Industrial Food And The Urban Margins, Tony Weis, Marylynn Steckley, Bruce Frayne
Hungry Cities Partnership
From the middle of the 20th century onwards, the productivity gains associated with high-input, high-yield monocultures and livestock operations have become increasingly central to global food security and to dynamics of urbanization across the global south. On one hand, competition has deflated prices and helped undermine the viability of small farm livelihoods in many places. On the other hand, rising flows of cheap food have effectively subsidized urban migration in impoverished urban and peri-urban settings. But this cheapness is highly deceptive, as it hinges on the failure to account for an array of biological and physical costs – which can …

Background: The IRX-2 biologic is a subcutaneous injectable immunotherapy composed of IL-2 and other cytokines derived from stimulated lymphocytes. Preclinically, IRX-2 activates T cells, natural killer cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells, and facilitates maturation of antigen-presenting cells.Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) are associated with improved outcomes in many cancers including early stage breast cancer (ESBC) and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). We report data on TIL recruitment associated with pre-operative IRX-2 in a phase Ib ESBC trial, as well as phase Ib and IIa HNSCC trials.
Methods: The pre-operative IRX-2 regimen was evaluated in both ESBC and HNSCC trials for …

Background: Adoptive immunotherapy with tumor-specific TCR gene-modified T cells has the potential to eradicate bulky disease. Traditional methods of TCR identification require lengthy in vitro culture to generate clonal T-cell populations, which adds time and complexity to this promising therapy. Here we described a simplified and reliable method to identify TCRs by single cell TCR sequencing of cells sorted with antibodies against T-cell surface markers that are up-regulated only when they are stimulated with specific tumor cell antigens.
Methods: A tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) culture with T cells reactive against autologous tumor was generated from a brain metastasis of a patients …

Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer 2018 Annual Meeting Posters
Background: Although the temporality of immune-related adverse events (irAE) is well-recognized during immunotherapy to be highly variable and often delayed,[1] post-immunotherapy irAE are rarely described and potentially under-recognized. In 2013, two cases were reported in abstract form in Deutschen Dermatologischen Gesellschaft.[2] In July 2018 a case of autoimmune hepatitis eight months post-immunotherapy was reported in The Oncologist[3] and a dermatologic series appeared online in JAMA Dermatology.[4] With expanding indications for IO and an increasing number of clinical trials in the curative-neoadjuvant setting, larger numbers of patients are being treated in earlier stages of disease and often for short courses. Given …

Reactive Ion Plasma Modification Of Poly(Vinyl‐Alcohol) Increases Primary Endothelial Cell Affinity And Reduces Thrombogenicity, Patrick Jurney, Deirdre Anderson, Grace Pohan, Evelyn Yim, Monica Hinds
Faculty Publications
Bulk material properties and luminal surface interaction with blood determine the clinical viability of vascular grafts, and reducing intimal hyperplasia is necessary to improve their long‐term patency. Here, the authors report that the surface of a biocompatible hydrogel material, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) can be altered by exposing it to reactive ion plasma (RIP) in order to increase primary endothelial cell attachment. The power and the carrier gas of the RIP treatment are varied and the resultant surface nitrogen, water contact angle, as well as the ability of the RIP‐treated surfaces to support primary endothelial colony forming cells is characterized. Additionally, …

Arab American College Students: What Predicts Their Engagement With The Israeli/Palestinian Conflict?, Manal Yazbak Abu Ahmad, Adrienne B. Dessel, Noor Ali
Peace and Conflict Studies
Arab and Jewish U.S. college students are impacted by the Israeli/Palestinian (I/P) conflict and heated interactions among students have erupted across campuses. There is a dearth of research on Arab American student perspectives on this conflict and on their interactions with Jewish students in higher education settings. This study seeks to further our understanding of these topics by reporting on a quantitative survey of Arab American college students (n=66). We examined dependent variables of Arab students seeking education on the I/P conflict, and interest in collaborating with Jewish students for peace. Independent variables were gender, religion, having Jewish friends, learning …

Peace and Conflict Studies
It is imperative that transformative educators understand how education can be manipulated to serve political and authoritarian agendas and to recognize its subtle manifestations in order to reshape education for the purposes of fostering peace, cooperation and acceptance. Bush and Saltarelli (2000) assert that in its extremes, education can have “two faces”. It can be used as a tool to stimulate political unrest, foster hatred, justify violence and promote inequities; or in the case of peace education, facilitate the reconstruction of fragile states. Yet peace education programs continue to be criticized for their lack of rigorous evaluations largely by those …

Apoptosis and oxidative stress are essential for the pathogenesis of acute liver failure and fulminant hepatic failure. Human placental hydrolysate (hPH) has been reported to possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In the present study, the protective effects of hPH against D-galactosamine (D-GalN)- and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced hepatocyte apoptosis were investigated in vivo. In addition, the molecular mechanisms underlying the anti-apoptotic activities of hPH against D-GalN-induced cell death in vitro were examined. Male Sprague-D awley rats were injected with D-GaIN/LPS with or without the administration of hPH. Rats were sacrificed 24 h after D-GaIN/LPS intraperitoneal injection, and the blood and liver samples …

The Impact Of A Poverty Simulation On Baccalaureate Nursing Students’ Attitudes, Kristen Smith
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Poverty is an ongoing issue in the United States, with major implications for the health of U.S. citizens. In order to provide compassionate care, nurses must understand their own attitudes towards those living in poverty. The purpose of this study was to evaluate for possible changes in attitudes towards poverty in junior level BSN students after a poverty simulation intervention. Participants were surveyed using the Yun and Weaver’s Short Form Attitudes towards Poverty (SFATP) tool, which looks three factors of poverty attitudes: personal deficiency, stigma, and structural perspective.
The Adult Learning Theory provided the theoretical framework for the study. This …

Evaluation Of Three Forest-Based Bioenergy Development Strategies In The Inland Northwest, United States, Jill Moroney
Human-Environment Systems Research Center Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this article, we compare three bioenergy scenarios that use woody biomass from US Inland Northwest forests. The scenarios are based on current bioenergy research, development efforts, and stakeholder input. They include a small-scale system that produces drop-in transportation biofuel and biochar, a large, regional system that produces bio-aviation fuel, and a midsized pellet production system. We modeled woody biomass harvest, processing, and transportation, and then evaluated profitability and potential socioeconomic impacts to determine the overall viability of each strategy. Through interviews, we found widespread stakeholder support for all three scenarios. Wood-pellet production was profitable and feasible with current prices …

Prevailing Clusters Of Canine Behavioural Traits In Historical Us Demand For Dog Breeds (1926–2005), Bethany Wilson, James Serpell, Harold Herzog, Paul Mcgreevy
Demography and Statistics for Companion Animal Populations Collection
Drawing on American Kennel Club (AKC) puppy registration numbers for approximately 82 varieties of pedigree dogs between 1926 and 2005, the current article analyses behavioural reports on 32,005 dogs of these varieties reported through the Canine Behavioural Assessment and Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ). Cluster analysis of C-BARQ scores indicates that the 82 breeds fell into six clusters. Average scores for each of the 14 behavioural subscales and 22 miscellaneous traits in C-BARQ were calculated for each cluster, and the breeds in each cluster with average scores most similar to the cluster averages were selected as titular breeds. Titular breeds for each …
