Querying Rural Content Experts Using An Online Questionnaire, Marilyn A. Swan, Barbara B. Hobbs
College of Nursing Faculty Publications
Purpose: Obtaining feedback from rural content experts is critical in developing valid and reliable instruments to advance the science of rural health. However, traditional methods, i.e., focus groups are impractical due to location and distance. Using an online questionnaire combined with telephone and email contacts to obtain content experts’ feedback is discussed. Item statement analysis and efficiency and effectiveness of the process are presented.
Methods: The process included the development of an online questionnaire, asking experts to rate 51 item statement for their relevancy, sufficiency of description, and clarity and readability. To increase the response rate, a series of four …

Differences In Physical Activity And Diet Patterns Between Non-Rural And Rural Adults., Lacey Mccormack, Howard Wey, Jessica R. Meendering, Bonny Specker
Health and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: It is unclear how rural occupations and lifestyles may play a role in shaping physical activity and diet behaviors that contribute to the rural⁻urban obesity disparity.
METHODS: Data come from the prospective and observational South Dakota Rural Bone Health Study, which included adults aged 20⁻66 years in three groups: (1) non-rural non-Hutterite, (2) rural non-Hutterite, and (3) rural Hutterite. Physical activity data were collected using 7-day physical activity questionnaires, and hours per day in physical activity categories are reported. Diet data were collected using food frequency questionnaires, and food group servings per day (svg/day) are reported. Mixed models were …

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The biodiversity of urban and post-industrial ecosystems is a highly relevant and growing new frontier in ecological research. Even so, the functionality of these ecosystems may not always be successfully predicted based on prior biodiversity and ecosystem functioning theory. Indeed, evidence suggests that the general biological impoverishment within the urban context envisioned thirty years ago was overstated. Many of the world’s urban centers support some degree of biodiversity that is indigenous, as well as a complex array of non-native species, resulting in highly functional, and often, novel communities. For over two decades, a multi-disciplinary team has examined the sub-lethal impact …

Substance Use Disorders Among Utah Women, Robbyn T. Scribner, Susan R. Madsen
Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications
Substance use disorders, including the opioid epidemic, have reached crisis levels throughout the United States, and Utah is no exception. In 2017, more than 72,000 Americans died from drug overdoses, a number that has doubled in the past decade. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 635 Utahns died from a drug overdose in 2016; that is 22.4 per 100,00 population, a rate that was above the national average of 19.8 and the 19th highest in the nation for that year. Although in Utah and the U.S. as a whole, men are more likely to die from a drug overdose, …

The Ketogenic Diet: The Effects You’D Yeast Expect, Bryce Edwards, Samantha M. Waters
Dental Hygiene Student Research Posters
This research poster addresses the question: How does the ketogenic diet affect the oral cavity? Ketogenic ‘keto’ diet emphasizes high fat, low carbohydrate consumption and avoids simple carbohydrate and sugars. Sugar substitutes are almost always utilized. Fat heavy diets causes the body to go into ketosis: a process in which the body burns fat for energy because glucose isn’t available. The keto diet has many positive effects for the body, including several specific to the oral cavity: Decreased caries risk, gingival inflammation, and bleeding; reduction of acidity and plaque mutans when paired with the keto approved sugar substitute: erythritol. The …

Air Polishing: A New Look At An Old Technique, Ellen Bosland, Cristina Sevilla
Dental Hygiene Student Research Posters
This research poster addresses the question “What differences exist between erythritol, glycine, and sodium bicarbonate powders in air polishing?” The use of air polishers in the dental field is highly recommended; however, the ability to determine the correct powder and grit for each patient can be vital. The three types of powders have different pros and cons related to their function; though most studies show significant advantages of using air polishing in general. One study compared erythritol powder and the ultrasonic. In the results, pocket depths were decreased but there was no difference in effectiveness between the two; however, a …

Taxation Of Undocumented Immigrants: The Uneasy Connection Between Regulating The Undocumented Immigrant And Fostering Illegal Activity, Nneka Obiokoye
Taxation Of Undocumented Immigrants: The Uneasy Connection Between Regulating The Undocumented Immigrant And Fostering Illegal Activity, Nneka Obiokoye
The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review
This article seeks to correct some of the negative perceptions held by the general public pertaining to undocumented immigrants, by drawing attention to four major points. First, contrary to popular belief, undocumented immigrants pay taxes. Indeed, as this article will show, in many instances, undocumented immigrants pay a higher rate of tax than U.S. citizens because the burden of tax on such people tends to outweigh the benefits received. Second, undocumented immigrants are human beings with the same needs and desires as every other human. Therefore, laws and policies that tend to make it impossible for such people to provide …

Clicks At Any Cost: Why Regulation Won't Upend The Economics Of Fake News, Amy Kristin Sanders, Rachael L. Jones
The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review
Increasingly, the production of fake news has become industrialized; enterprising entrepreneurs are deceiving Internet users with false information while earning significant sums of money. The problem of fake news and misinformation, however, is not one solely brought about by the increase in digital technology. Historically, campaigns of misinformation have been used to achieve social, political, and economic goals long before the Internet was commonplace. But, recent calls to regulate fake news content contravene American law and run afoul of our nation’s laissez-faire approach to the regulation of false or misleading information. We argue that government-imposed, speech-limiting restrictions cannot contain fake …

Better The Devil You Know: An Examination Of Manufacturer Driven Lethal Injection Drug Shortages, Heather Booth
The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review
In an attempt to make executions more humane, Oklahoma’s Department of Corrections (“DOC”) consulted a physician to overhaul the state’s execution protocol. This consultation resulted in the implementation of the modern three-drug lethal injection cocktail. However, recent challenges to lethal injection protocols tell a different story. European-based drug companies, wary of having their products used in executions, have begun refusing to sell drugs to state DOCs. This refusal is mostly with respect to the first drug in the three-drug cocktail, the anesthetic. This refusal has led to drug shortages and improvisation that some doctors say will cause unnecessary pain and …

Alternative Methods To Traditional Written Exam-Based Assessment, Shane Dillon, Alan Mcdonnell, Diarmaid Murphy, Lynsey White
Practitioner Research Projects
Donnelly and Fitzmaurice (2005, p.14) suggest that “assessment methods should be in accord with the learning outcomes of the module and should foster a deep approach to learning”. While unseen written exams do develop skills such as “examination techniques, writing under pressure, recall” (Smyth, 2004), there are a number of alternative assessment methods that determine what students actually understand and what they can do, in contrast to what they can recall. As one student noted “I hate to say it, but what you have got to do is to have a list of “facts” …you write down the important points …

Information literacy (IL) is defined as “the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning” (ACRL 2015, p.3). The term IL was originally confined to library and IT skills (Behrens, 1994; Johnston & Webber, 2003) but has since received increasing international interest. It is considered as an important 21st century skill in combination with critical thinking (Kong, 2014), and is perceived as basic human right within the digital world (UNESCO, 2008). The importance …

Wellness Behaviors And Body Mass Index Among U.S. Adolescents: A Comparative Study, Timothy Makubuya
Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works
Behaviors such as sedentariness, poor nutritional choices and inadequate sleeping put youth at risk of illnesses. Although health and physical education programs are structured to promote the development of various health and physical skills, they are constantly faced with challenges to their continual existence. As such, issues related to body composition ensue and manifest differently across gender and race/ethnicity. This study aimed at examining the relationships between multiple youth risk behaviors and body composition. In addition, gender and racial/ethnic differences between white and black high school students were examined. Bivariate and multivariate examinations of physical activity, dietary behavior, sleep in …

BACKGROUND: Cabotegravir (CAB) is a novel strand-transfer integrase inhibitor being developed for HIV treatment and prevention. CAB is formulated both as an immediate-release oral tablet for daily administration and as a long-acting injectable suspension (long-acting CAB [CAB LA]) for intramuscular (IM) administration, which delivers prolonged plasma exposure to the drug after IM injection. HIV Prevention Trials Network study 077 (HPTN 077) evaluated the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of CAB LA in HIV-uninfected males and females at 8 sites in Brazil, Malawi, South Africa, and the United States.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: HPTN 077 was a double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 2a trial. Healthy …
