Psychiatric Severity And Hiv Risk In Adults With Mental Illness, Brady E. Yocom Nov 2018

Psychiatric Severity And Hiv Risk In Adults With Mental Illness, Brady E. Yocom

Open Access Dissertations

Adults with mental illness are at elevated risk of contracting HIV. To identify especially vulnerable subgroups of this population and to develop effective HIV-prevention interventions, a better understanding of the linkages between psychopathology and HIV risk is needed. The current study was designed to determine if factor-analytically derived indices of psychiatric severity based on MCMI-III scale scores were linked with HIV risk behavior and putative cognitive-behavioral mediators of risk behavior, and to determine if cognitive-behavioral factors mediated the expected relationships between psychiatric severity and HIV risk behavior. The sample included 280 adult men and women with mental illness. Greater general …

This dissertation examines whether Turkish law could be amended in order to address the concerns of counterterrorism officials without unnecessarily infringing on individual rights. It differs from other research conducted on counterterrorism law in a number of ways. First, it provides general information on the concept of terrorism and the history and evolution of terrorism in Turkey. It further compares terrorism in Turkey with Europe and the United States. Second, it compares relevant counterterrorism laws of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Turkey. Third, it shows the approaches of the European and United States highest courts to …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

New concepts have emerged in theoretical ecology with the intent to quantify complexities in ecological change that are unaccounted for in state-and-transition models and to provide applied ecologists with statistical early warning metrics able to predict and prevent state transitions. With its rich history of furthering ecological theory and its robust and broad-scale monitoring frameworks, the rangeland discipline is poised to empirically assess these newly proposed ideas while also serving as early adopters of novel statistical metrics that provide advanced warning of a pending shift to an alternative ecological regime. We review multivariate early warning and regime shift detection metrics, …

Designing Tailored Patient Education On Atrial Fibrillation, Tammy Toscos, R Ahmed, Romisa Rohani Ghahari, Elizabeth Martin, Shauna Wagner, Michelle Drouin, Michael J. Mirro

Presentations and Events

Background & Hypothesis: Research has revealed a high prevalence of depression, anxiety, and burnout among medical students accompanied by widespread lack of treatment. We hypothesize that by leveraging our study findings examining the use of telemental health(TMH) among youth (ages 14-24) alongside results from existing research focused on the mental health needs of medical students (median age at start 22-24 years old), we will gain valuable insight into the potential for TMH to address the needs of this high-risk population.

Methods: Using the Delphi method, a sample of 25 experts were surveyed anonymously, thus avoiding group pressure for conformity while …

Cariogenic Pathogens: One Less Thing To Wine About, Jordan White, Kathleen Kersey, Jessica Darcy

Dental Hygiene Student Research Posters

Recently, studies have explored how biologically active compounds in wine benefit human teeth. Dietary polyphenols, in particular wine polyphenols, seem to balance the composition of the oral microbiota, thus leading to potentially more effective anti-carious effects on the individual. Recent research has discussed the main action mechanisms of polyphenols against oral microbial diseases and highlighted the antiadhesive capacity of caffeic and p-coumaric acids as well as grape seed and red wine extracts. It has been found that polyphenols increased their inhibition potential against S. mutans adhesion when combined with S. dentisani.¹ Other research regarding polyphenols, specifically resveratrol, discussed the anti-inflammatory …

A Barefoot Running Program For A College Lacrosse Player With Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome: A Case Report, Erica Mazzarelli, Kirsten Buchanan

Case Report Posters

Barefoot running protocols have been effective in decreasing anterior and lateral chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS), but they have not been studied in patients with posterior CECS. Additionally, there is a lack of research that has investigated a barefoot running protocol in a college lacrosse athlete. The purpose of this case report was to examine the effects of adopting a forefoot strike pattern, through a barefoot running program, in a 20-year-old college lacrosse player with posterior chronic exertional compartment syndrome.

Mckenzie Approach To Treating Lumbar Radiculopathy With A Lateral Shift: A Case Report, Carly Theriault Nov 2018

Mckenzie Approach To Treating Lumbar Radiculopathy With A Lateral Shift: A Case Report, Carly Theriault

Case Report Posters

Lumbar radiculopathy is compression of a spinal nerve root, typically due to a herniated nucleus pulposus. It can present as low back pain (LBP) that radiates to one lower extremity (LE) and may be associated with diminished sensation, strength and reflexes on the affected side. The McKenzie approach is an evaluation and treatment technique that focuses on the movement of the nucleus pulposus within the intervertebral disc during trunk movement. This approach involves having a patient perform repeated motions, while monitoring their symptoms for centralization. Centralization refers to the concept that radiating symptoms into the lower extremities can move proximally …

Getting Their Fix: Doctor's Dependency On Big Pharma, Larissa Tiller Nov 2018

Getting Their Fix: Doctor's Dependency On Big Pharma, Larissa Tiller

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

Section 6002 of the Affordable Care Act, also known as the “Sunshine Act,” was intended to stop corrupt practices within the medical community by requiring pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers to disclose all transfers of value of a certain amount made between them and physicians. This article suggests that the better solution to stopping corrupt practices is to ban some transfers all together.

Invisible Inequality And Economic Empowerment: Domestic Violence, Discrimination, And The Creation Of A New Protected Class, Cameron M. Brown Britt Nov 2018

Invisible Inequality And Economic Empowerment: Domestic Violence, Discrimination, And The Creation Of A New Protected Class, Cameron M. Brown Britt

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

Today, there is a large population of Americans whose plight is invisible to much of the rest of society - the survivors of domestic and sexual abuse and violence. While in the last few years survivors’ voices are beginning to be heard, the legal landscape is still lagging far behind and is sorely inadequate to provide protections and relief to survivors in many areas of life. Particularly, this is prominent in the employment landscape where federal protections for survivors are sparse. Moreover, survivor-employees are vulnerable to discrimination, unfair firing, and inadequate leave for court appearances and medical assistance. These obstacles …
