Plankton As Prevailing Conditions: A Surveillance Role For Plankton Indicators Within The Marine Strategy Framework Directive, Abigail Mcquatters-Gollop, David Johns, Simon Greenstreet, Jacob Bedford
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) uses an indicator-based approach for ecosystem assessment; indicators of the state of ecosystem components ('state indicators') are used to determine whether, or not, these ecosystem components are at ‘Good Environmental Status’ relative to prevailing oceanographic conditions. Here, it is illustrated that metrics of change in plankton communities frequently provide indications of changing prevailing oceanographic conditions. Plankton indicators can therefore provide useful diagnostic information when interpreting results and determining assessment outcomes for analyses of state indicators across the food web. They can also perform a strategic role in assessing these state indicators by influencing target …

Background About one-third of patients who are depressed do not respond to antidepressant medication (ADM) and traditional psychotherapy shows limited benefits. However, most randomised trials have excluded the most sick patients, especially with comorbid personality disorder. Radically open dialectical behaviour therapy (RO DBT) is a new treatment targeting emotionally overcontrolled personality, which is common in refractory depression. Objective To evaluate the efficacy, cost-effectiveness and therapeutic mechanisms of RO DBT for patients with refractory depression. Design The Refractory depression: Mechanisms and Efficacy of RO DBT (RefraMED) trial was a multicentre, parallel-group, randomised trial in which participants were randomised to receive either …

Enhancing Grit Through Functional Imagery Training In Professional Soccer, Jonathan Rhodes, Jon May, Jackie Andrade, David Kavanagh
Enhancing Grit Through Functional Imagery Training In Professional Soccer, Jonathan Rhodes, Jon May, Jackie Andrade, David Kavanagh
School of Psychology
Functional Imagery Training (FIT) extends multisensory imagery training by involving athletes with goal setting and appraisal. We measured the effect of FIT on 24 professional soccer players’ grit, a personality trait associated with perseverance for a long-term goal. In a stepped-wedge design an immediate (n=9) and delayed (n=10) group received FIT at week 1 or week 6, and were measured at week 12. A self-selected control group (n=5) received no intervention. The delayed group were also measured at week 6 just before their intervention, and week 18. Grit scores in both intervention groups increased following the intervention, but the control …

Occupant Heating Practices In Dwellings: A Methodology For Identifying Scheduled Heating Periods And Manual Override Events, Na Bruce-Konuah, Rv Jones, A Fuertes, P De Wilde
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Heating operation can be automated using a timer/programmer and thermostat, manually controlled by occupants, or both. In ten UK dwellings, both automated and manual override heating events were identified from 30 minute time series data of living room air temperature measurements. Multivariate logistic regression was used to infer a model of occupants’ manual override heating events based on indoor and outdoor environmental factors. The results showed that occupants manually override their programmed heating events and indoor temperature is the main factor influencing the override events. This study is the first model of manual override heating events developed for UK dwellings. …

Eye Movement Attenuation Of Intrusive Social Anxiety Imagery: A Pilot Study., Sr Homer, C Deeprose
Eye Movement Attenuation Of Intrusive Social Anxiety Imagery: A Pilot Study., Sr Homer, C Deeprose
School of Psychology
Background and objectives: A growing body of research has shown that negative, intrusive mental imagery plays a prevalent and causal role in social anxiety, and is qualitatively different to voluntarily generated imagery. Negative imagery can be reduced in vividness and emotional intensity through concurrent lateral eye movements (EMs) as per Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. Despite EMDR being used for a range of disorders, previous laboratorybased experimental research typically uses voluntarily generated autobiographical memories rather than involuntarily experienced intrusive images. In a pilot study, we investigated the efficacy of eye movement attenuation of negative, intrusive, socialanxiety imagery. Methods: …

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Point-of-care testing (POCT) coagulometers are increasingly being used in the hospital setting and patients’ self-testing. We determined the agreement of prothrombin time international normalized ratio (INR) results by POCT coagulometer and laboratory instrument through a comparative analysis and investigated whether the results of POCT coagulometer can reliably be used without being confirmed by standard laboratory analyzer. A total of 200 INR measurements by POCT coagulometer (CoaguChek XS Pro) and laboratory analyzer (Sysmex CS2000i) were compared using Passing-Bablok regression analysis and Bland-Altman plot. Agreement of the INR measurement was further analyzed in relation to dosing decision. The correlation of INR measurements …

Ectopic Enterobius Vermicularis Iinfestation; An Extremely Rare Cause Of Mesenteric Lymphadenopathy Mimicking Tuberculous Lymphadenitis, Summaya Zafar, Muhammad Usman, Zubair Ahmad
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Enterobius vermicularis (EV) is a pinworm which commonly resides in the lumen of the intestinal tract and lays eggs on the perianal skin. However, rarely the worm can infest various other sites in the body and cases with infestation of such ectopic sites have been reported in literature. Rare cases of mesenteric lymph node involvement have also been reported. We report a case in a young male who presented with signs and symptoms of acute appendicitis. During surgery, enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes were identified. Histological examination revealed adult worm in the appendiceal lumen. Histological examination of mesenteric lymph node revealed …

Koilonychia is a nail abnormality characterized by thin, brittle, and spoon-shaped nails. It is frequently observed in chronic iron deficiency secondary to malnutrition, chronic blood loss, or malabsorption. It may also be idiopathic or related to occupation and rare systemic disorders. Presence of koilonychia should prompt investigations for iron deficiency.

New Mexico’S Renewable Portfolio Standard: Analysis Of Existing Policy Design Elements And Compliance Obligations Beyond 2020, Gabriel Pacyniak
Faculty Scholarship
This white paper analyzes two elements of New Mexico’s current Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) in advance of the state legislature’s consideration of an RPS expansion in the 2019 legislative session. First, the paper surveys key policy design elements of the current RPS, compares those elements to other state RPSs, and identifies “policy considerations” that may inform legislative or regulatory action. Among the findings from this part of the analysis are that: 1) other states have set much higher RPS targets; 2) that New Mexico’s RPS has uniquely restrictive cost-containment measures that limit cost impacts but also prohibit the full RPS …
