BACKGROUND: Falls are a public health issue for the older adult population and more so for people with dementia (PWD). Compared with their cognitively intact peers, PWD are at higher risk of falls and injurious falls. This randomised controlled trial aims to test the clinical and cost effectiveness of Tai Chi to improve postural balance among community-dwelling PWD and to assess the feasibility of conducting a larger definitive trial to reduce the incidence of falls among PWD. METHODS: A 3-centre parallel group randomised controlled trial with embedded process evaluation. One hundred and fifty community-dwelling dyads of a person with dementia …

The Tenure Process: A Descriptive Study Of Selected Texas Universities, Gary Miller, Wesley D. Hickey Nov 2018

The Tenure Process: A Descriptive Study Of Selected Texas Universities, Gary Miller, Wesley D. Hickey

School Leadership Review

Few things in the professional life of university faculty are more important than the tenure process. Achieving tenure provides the faculty member with the confidence that his or her position with the university will be secure for life. There are exceptions; criminal behavior and elimination of the program come to mind, but tenure allows the faculty member to research controversial areas without the potential for political repercussions that could jeopardize employment. According to the American Association of University Professors: The principal purpose of tenure is to safeguard academic freedom, which is necessary for all who teach and conduct research in …

The Rise Of The Baptists In South Carolina: Origins, Revival, And Their Enduring Legacy, Steven C. Pruitt Nov 2018

The Rise Of The Baptists In South Carolina: Origins, Revival, And Their Enduring Legacy, Steven C. Pruitt

Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History

Baptists have played an important role in the development of the religious landscape in the United States since the First Great Awakening. This religious sect’s core of influence eventually migrated south around the turn of the nineteenth century. A battle over the soul of the South would be waged by the Baptists, along with the Methodists, and Presbyterians also moving into the area. This Protestant surge coincided with the decrease in influence of the Episcopal (Anglican) Church after ties with England were severed. In many ways, this battle for the future would occur in the newly settled backcountry of South …

Ronald Reagan, Jesse Unruh And The California Gubernatorial Race, 1970, Alice L. Alvarado Nov 2018

Ronald Reagan, Jesse Unruh And The California Gubernatorial Race, 1970, Alice L. Alvarado

Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History

This essay examines the 1970 gubernatorial race in California between incumbent Ronald Reagan and powerful California legislator Jesse Unruh. Most of the scholarship on this particular subject tends to revolve around Reagan's first campaign for governor, but neglects his re-election campaign. Although Unruh would lose the campaign, he narrowed Reagan's win significantly. This study examines the candidates themselves, the issues facing California at the time, strategies used by each camp, and possible reasons why voters strayed from Reagan to the Unruh camp, and the final outcome of the race.

The United States' Nuclear Testing Program In The Marshall Islands, Deborah Herota Nov 2018

The United States' Nuclear Testing Program In The Marshall Islands, Deborah Herota

Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History

From 1946 to 1958, the United States conducted top secret nuclear weapons testing in the Marshall Islands that affects its people and its ecology to this day. The United States has done an injustice to the people of the Marshall Islands by forcing them off their native lands in order to procure testing sites, by knowingly exposing the people to radiation from these tests, by withholding information from the people who are most affected by the testing, and by not restoring the people to their health and to their lands. To date, the United States maintains a presence on the …

Evaluating The Effects Of Handmade Cards On Hospitalized Patients’ Health, Abigail Prins Nov 2018

Evaluating The Effects Of Handmade Cards On Hospitalized Patients’ Health, Abigail Prins

Scholars Week

Social support has a major influence on the health of patients. However, many hospitalized patients receive little or no visits from friends or family. The absence of social support may have negative effects on patients’ health. The knowledge of health benefits from social support are growing, however, there is little research on interventions offering support. The purpose of this research project is to evaluate the intervention of giving handmade cards to patients in the hospital setting on psychological and physiological health. The design will indicate if gifting handmade cards elicits effects of social support. The investigator used a convenience sample …

Relationships Exist Between Chemistry Self-Efficacy In College Students And Academic Outcomes In Chemical Education, Daniel Teoli Nov 2018

Relationships Exist Between Chemistry Self-Efficacy In College Students And Academic Outcomes In Chemical Education, Daniel Teoli

Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review

Introductory and preparatory chemistry courses hold a particular importance to students across a wide range of academic specialties and majors. In addition to serving as a potential primer for students interested in the possibility of majoring in chemistry, introductory and preparatory chemical education has been actively integrated into the curriculum of other fields within the natural science spectrum (such as biology and physics). Additionally, under the umbrella of requisite coursework, it has gained a strong pertinence to applied sciences such as nursing, engineering, and exercise physiology (Tai, Sadler, and Loehr 2005).

Consumption Of Different Caloric Sugar-Sweetened Solutions Alters Tissue Fatty Acid Composition And Lipid Metabolism In Young Female Sprague-Dawley Rats, Kaitlin Mock, Stephanie N. Altman, Joseph C. Gigliotti, Levi Berg, Janet C. Tou Nov 2018

Consumption Of Different Caloric Sugar-Sweetened Solutions Alters Tissue Fatty Acid Composition And Lipid Metabolism In Young Female Sprague-Dawley Rats, Kaitlin Mock, Stephanie N. Altman, Joseph C. Gigliotti, Levi Berg, Janet C. Tou

Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review

High carbohydrate intake has been reported to contribute to obesity by promoting de novo lipogenesis and metabolic disorders by altering tissue fatty acid composition. The type of caloric sweeteners added to beverages has changed with some sugars suggested to be more lipogenic. Therefore, the study objective was to determine the effect of consuming different types of caloric sugar-sweetened solutions on tissue fatty acid composition and risk of metabolic disorders. Growing female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned (n=7-8 rats/group) to drink water or water sweetened with 13% (w/v) glucose, sucrose, fructose or high fructose corn syrup 55 (HFCS-55). The rats were …

Learning From Mistakes: Decriminalizing Prostitution In The United States, Katheryn E. Marcum Nov 2018

Learning From Mistakes: Decriminalizing Prostitution In The United States, Katheryn E. Marcum

Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review

Prostitution is, according to cliché, the world’s oldest profession. It is also an activity greatly disputed by many, all over the world. Nearly every country has developed some way to address the issue. In the United States of America, prostitution is against the law in forty-nine of fifty states and heavily regulated in the other. The fact of the matter is that prostitution must exist because there is demand for it, and as long as that demand persists, so will the activity. Prostitution occurs across the globe between people of all genders, sexualities, ages and religions, and many other countries …

What Comic Books And Political Cartoons Reveal About Mexican History, Carolyn Brewer Nov 2018

What Comic Books And Political Cartoons Reveal About Mexican History, Carolyn Brewer

Mountaineer Undergraduate Research Review

History and popular culture have played off one another for centuries. While comic books might certainly seem to be a low-class form of entertainment, lacking the authority of a history textbook, they nonetheless allow the readers to engage in history as they have otherwise never experienced it. Rather than reading descriptions of what happened when the Spanish landed in Mexico, one may read The Cartoon History of the Modern World or Exploring the Americas to see clothing of the time-period as well as how some of the historical characters may have felt. By using comic books and political cartoons, one …

Improving Mental Health And Substance Abuse Treatment In Juvenile Detention Facilities, Harvard Law School Mississippi Delta Project

Delta Directions: Publications

Mental health and substance abuse treatment services are an essential component of a well-functioning rehabilitative juvenile justice system. These services are especially important in juvenile detention facilities, which contain a disproportionate number of juveniles suffering from mental illness due to the association between such issues and delinquency and the relative lack of services in the community.
