Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The Wnt/ß-catenin pathway has important biological activities, including the differentiation of cells and joint formations. The aim of our study was to determine the effect of paricalcitol on experimentally induced arthritis. Materials and methods: Type II collagen combined with Freund's adjuvant was applied to induce arthritis in Wistar albino female rats. Paricalcitol (0.3 μg/kg daily) was subcutaneously injected starting 1 day after collagen applications (prophylactic group) or 1 day after the onset of arthritis (therapeutic group), until day 29. Results: The 29th day arthritis scores were lower compared to the 13th day scores in the paricalcitol groups (P < 0.05), while they were higher in the arthritis group (P < 0.05). Marked cartilage-bone destruction and extensive perisynovial inflammation were detected in the arthritis group. Decreased cartilage-bone destruction and perisynovial inflammation in the paws were observed in the paricalcitol groups. The tissue mRNA levels of DKK1, Wnt5a, and axin-2 were higher in the arthritis group than in the control group. In the paricalcitol groups, mRNA expressions were lower than in the arthritis group. Conclusion: The present study shows that the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway is active in arthritis. Moreover, paricalcitol ameliorates arthritis via inhibiting the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway. Paricalcitol and the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway are candidates for research in human rheumatoid arthritis.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Esmolol and amiodarone are two most commonly used antiarrhythmic drugs in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. Nevertheless, blockade of beta-2 receptors by increasing doses raise concerns about possible vasospasms. We studied the vasoactive effects of amiodarone and esmolol on left internal mammary artery (LIMA), radial artery (RA), and saphenous vein (SV) grafts. Materials and methods: After determining the presence of functional smooth muscle and endothelial layers, the responses of submaximally preconstricted graft samples were recorded in a tissue bath system. A total of 96 graft samples from 40 patients were used: 16 LIMA, 16 RA, and 16 SV …

Background/aim: Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB)-associated acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common situation and rapid diagnosis and risk classification are important in the prevention and management of AKI. Changes in serum creatinine (SCr) levels in the current consensus criteria do not allow clinicians to diagnose CPB-associated AKI until 48 h after surgery. Materials and methods: We conducted a prospective single center study involving 57 patients who underwent cardiac surgery with CBP to compare serum beta-trace protein (BTP), neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin-2 (NGAL), and cystatin C (CysC) levels with SCr for early diagnosis of CPB associated AKI. We defined AKI according to KDIGO …

Molecular Characterization Of The Nematode Heterakis Gallinarum (Ascaridida: Heterakidae) Infecting Domestic Chickens (Gallus Gallus Domesticus) In Tunisia, Nabil Amor, Sarra Farjallah, Osama Badri Mohammed, Abdulaziz Alagaili, Lilia Bahri

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Heterakis gallinarum is one of the most recurrently diagnosed nematodes within the gastrointestinal tract of galliform birds. In the present study, we investigated the genetic diversity of 96 H. gallinarum collected from free-range chickens from different localities in Tunisia. We assessed phylogeny and genetic variability using the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA and the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene. Haplotype and nucleotide diversities indicate that H. gallinarum is a species with extremely low genetic diversity. Based on the networks and phylogenetic trees, there was strong support for the absence of significant geographical structuring among …

In the present study, it was aimed to inactivate Vibrio parahaemolyticus ATCC 17802, which is an important human pathogen, by making use of edible methylcellulose films containing encapsulated bacteriophages. For this purpose, the bacteriophages used as biocontrol agents specific for V. parahaemolyticus ATCC 17802 were isolated from raw bonito fishes (Sarda sarda) and then purified, and finally the stabilities of isolated bacteriophages were determined. The pure bacteriophage filtrates were encapsulated with sodium alginate by employing an extrusion method and the edible methylcellulose films were prepared. The bacteriophage stabilities of the prepared films were analyzed on the 0th, 4th, 7th, and …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A 4-year-old castrated male Korean domestic shorthair cat was referred with bilateral corneal edema. Focal and generalized acute bullous keratopathy in the oculus dexter and oculus sinister, respectively, were diagnosed by ophthalmologic examinations. Intensive topical treatment was administered to both eyes. A therapeutic soft contact lens was inserted in the oculus sinister as a corneal bandage instead of surgical treatment. The patient achieved complete recovery at 44 days after treatment. A therapeutic soft contact lens and an intensive regimen involving a topical hyperosmotic solution successfully treated acute bullous keratopathy in a feline patient.
