The Protective Effects Of Chrysin And Flunixin Meglumine Against Excess Copper In Male Rats, Pinar Tatli Seven, Burcu Gül Baykalir, İsmai̇l Seven, Tuba Parlak Ak, Neşe Başak Türkmen, Hakan Güllüoğlu

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Thirty-six Sprague Dawley male rats were housed in individual cages and randomly divided into six groups: control, copper sulfate (Cu; 500 ppm body weight (BW)/day), flunixin meglumine (FM; 2.2 ppm BW/day), chrysin (chrysin; 50 ppm BW/day), copper sulfate + FM (Cu + FM; 500 ppm BW/day of copper sulfate and 2.2 ppm BW/day of FM), and copper sulfate + chrysin (Cu + Chrysin; 500 ppm BW/day of copper sulfate and 50 ppm BW/day of chrysin). Feed intake (FI) in the Cu + Chrysin group significantly increased in comparison with that of the Cu group (P < 0.01). Cu excess significantly increased malondialdehyde, indicating oxidative stress. Chrysin and FM administration significantly decreased malondialdehyde levels and increased the superoxide dismutase and catalase activities in the liver and kidney tissues (P < 0.001). Serum TNF-α levels were significantly lower in the Cu + FM and Cu + Chrysin groups in comparison to the Cu group (P < 0.001). It was seen that FM and chrysin treatments alleviated degeneration, necrosis, and apoptosis in the liver and kidney tissues of the Cu-treated rats. Chrysin appeared to ameliorate the adverse effects on FI and liver and kidney tissues by scavenging where the free radicals are located and increasing the activity of antioxidants.

Polycythemia Vera: Diagnosis, Clinical Course, And Current Management, Yahya Büyükaşik, Ridvan Ali̇, Muhli̇s Cem Ar, Mehmet Turgut, Aki̇f Seli̇m Yavuz, Güray Saydam

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Very important developments related to polycythemia vera (PV) have occurred during the last two decades. The discovery of Janus kinase (JAK) 2 mutations has changed both the diagnosis and clinical management of PV. Currently JAK2 molecular testing is essential in the diagnostic work-up and JAK2 mutation positivity is a major diagnostic criterion. The discovery of JAK2 mutations suggested that abnormal JAK-STAT signaling was a pivotal feature in the pathogenesis of Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms. This idea led to the development of JAK inhibitors. Currently ruxolitinib, a JAK1/JAK2 inhibitor, is also approved for PV patients with hydroxyurea resistance or intolerance. International collaborations …

Background/aim: This study performed typing of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) using high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) to determine the association with smoking, matrix metalloproteinases, and common comorbidities. Materials and methods: The study enrolled 94 hospitalized patients. Participants were divided into a group of 69 current and former smokers (group A) and a group of 25 that had never smoked (group B). Patients were also divided into 3 categories according to the degree of emphysema and bronchial wall thickness using HRCT to determine the association with levels of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) and TIMP-1, as well as associated comorbidities. These three …
