Owls In Urban Narratives: Implications For Conservation And Environmental Education In Nw Patagonia (Argentina), Soledad Molares, Yamila Gurovich
Owls In Urban Narratives: Implications For Conservation And Environmental Education In Nw Patagonia (Argentina), Soledad Molares, Yamila Gurovich
Neotropical Biodiversity
In Argentinian Patagonia, the coexistence of owls and humans has a long and sometimes conflictive ethnobiological heritage. This paper presents a recent environmental situation which brought humans and owls together after massive fruiting of the native bamboo Chusquea culeou (Poaceae) in Los Alerces National Park, near Esquel city (Patagonia, Argentina). The event was followed by an increase in the population of native mice (e.g. Oligoryzomys longicaudatus, Abrothrix longipilis) which, in turn, caused an increase in the population of owls and other predators. This caused concern and fear in towns and homesteads close to the National Park. The objectives of our …
Design Of Virtual Interactive Simulations For Surgical Training, Doga Demirel
Design Of Virtual Interactive Simulations For Surgical Training, Doga Demirel
Theses and Dissertations
Design and development of a virtual reality based surgical simulation has many steps and the first and most important step is the comprehensive analysis of the surgery. We performed comprehensive analysis, hierarchical task analysis, which allowed steps and goals of the surgery to be understood while expressing the order of execution and hierarchical relations between the tasks of the surgery. Time and performance metrics derived from the comprehensive analysis provides detailed procedural feedback throughout the surgical simulation, which will help classify surgeon’s skill level. We developed quantitative performance metrics for arthroscopy-based rotator cuff surgery with the goal to establish objective …

Mclean, Richard C. Peralta, Sarah E. Null, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
The goals of the original proposed project remain the same, that is, to test the hypothesis that Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) for stormwater harvesting is a technically feasible, socially and environmentally acceptable, economically viable, and legally feasible option for developing new water supplies for arid Western urban ecosystems experiencing increasing population, and climate change pressures on existing water resources. The project is being carried out via three distinct but integrated components that include: 1) Monitoring of existing distributed MAR harvesting schemes involving a growing number of demonstration Green Infrastructure (GI) test sites; 2) Integrated stormwater/vadose zone/groundwater/ ecosystem services modeling; and …
A Study On Fiscal Policy And Economic Growth From An Institutional Perspective, Thúy Ái Hồ
A Study On Fiscal Policy And Economic Growth From An Institutional Perspective, Thúy Ái Hồ
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
This dissertation studies the interrelationship between fiscal policy and institutions (property right protection and economic freedom, in particular) in affecting economic growth. The vast literature on economic growth examines institutions and fiscal policy as separate determinants of economic growth, and has not established a theoretical basis or empirical link on the interaction between them. This dissertation takes a unique approach to the growth literature by studying a channel that institutions affect growth – the fiscal policy channel.
Among the first ones who incorporate economic institutions into a growth model with fiscal policy, I construct a theoretical framework in Chapter 2 …
Deviancy, Dependency, And Disability: The Forgotten History Of Eugenics And Mass Incarceration, Laura I. Appleman
Deviancy, Dependency, And Disability: The Forgotten History Of Eugenics And Mass Incarceration, Laura I. Appleman
Duke Law Journal
Three widely discussed explanations of the punitive carceral state are racism, harsh drug laws, and prosecutorial overreach. These three narratives, however, only partially explain how our correctional system expanded to its current overcrowded state. Neglected in our discussion of mass incarceration is our largely forgotten history of the long-term, wholesale institutionalization of the disabled. This form of mass detention, motivated by a continuing application of eugenics and persistent class-based discrimination, is an important part of our history of imprisonment, one that has shaped key contours of our current supersized correctional system. Only by fully exploring this forgotten narrative of long-term …
Electoral Due Process, Sarah Milkovich
Electoral Due Process, Sarah Milkovich
Duke Law Journal
Elections and their aftermath are matters left to the states by the U.S. Constitution. But the Supreme Court has made clear that the right to vote is federally protected, and fiercely so. When an election failure takes place and deprives citizens of their votes, challengers must resort to state law remedies. Many states have procedural requirements for election challenges that are stringent to the point of being prohibitive.
This Note argues that the due process concerns raised by these burdensome state procedures are amplified by their voting rights context. Where a voter must take to the courts to vindicate her …

Comparison Of Multistage And Numerical Discretization Methods For Estimating Parameters In Nonlinear Linear Ordinary Differential Equations Models, Emad Hazim Aboudi, Wafa Jaafar Hussein
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
Many of the dynamic processes in different sciences are described by models of differential equations. These models explain the change in the behavior of the studied process over time by linking the behavior of the process under study with its derivatives. These models often contain constant and time-varying parameters that vary according to the nature of the process under study in this We will estimate the constant and time-varying parameters in a sequential method in several stages. In the first stage, the state variables and their derivatives are estimated in the method of penalized splines(p- splines) . In the second …

Intermittent Departures, Returns, And The Incremental Acts Of The Everyday: Paid Domestic Work And Insurgency In Sitio Sibol, Bohol, Cherie Audrey Alfiler
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
Our understanding of maids and their condition is confined within the current discourse of domestic labor exploitation and its general assumptions. This study presents an expansion of the discussion as experienced by residents of Sitio Sibol, Bohol including past experiences of NPA (New People’s Army) insurgency and counterinsurgency that partly played an instrumental role in shaping the maid’s experience. Informed by ethnographic research among former and current maids and their community in Sitio Sibol, this study problematizes how the changing context in the community affects the emergence and proliferation of local domestic work. It traces back the community’s history and …

“How Is My Child’S Asthma?” Digital Phenotype And Actionable Insights For Pediatric Asthma, Utkarshani Jaimini, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Maninder Kalra, Revathy Venkataramanan, Dipesh Kadariya, Amit Sheth
Publications
Background: In the traditional asthma management protocol, a child meets with a clinician infrequently, once in 3 to 6 months, and is assessed using the Asthma Control Test questionnaire. This information is inadequate for timely determination of asthma control, compliance, precise diagnosis of the cause, and assessing the effectiveness of the treatment plan. The continuous monitoring and improved tracking of the child’s symptoms, activities, sleep, and treatment adherence can allow precise determination of asthma triggers and a reliable assessment of medication compliance and effectiveness. Digital phenotyping refers to moment-by-moment quantification of the individual-level human phenotype in situ using data from …
Efficient Exploration Of Many Variables And Interactions Using Regularized Regression, Tyson S. Barrett, Ginger Lockhart
Efficient Exploration Of Many Variables And Interactions Using Regularized Regression, Tyson S. Barrett, Ginger Lockhart
Psychology Faculty Publications
The prevention sciences often face several situations that can compromise the statistical power and validity of a study. Among these, research can (1) have data with many variables, sometimes with low sample sizes, (2) have highly correlated predictors, (3) have unclear theory or empirical evidence related to the research questions, and/or (4) have difficulty selecting the proper covariates in observational studies. Modeling in these situations is difficult—and at times impossible—with conventional methods. Fortunately, regularized regression—a machine learning technique—can aid in exploring datasets that are otherwise difficult to analyze, allowing researchers to draw insights from these data. Although many of these …

Business And Commercial Litigation In Federal Courts (4th Ed.) Edited By Robert L. Haig, James M. Wicks
Business And Commercial Litigation In Federal Courts (4th Ed.) Edited By Robert L. Haig, James M. Wicks
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
Four years ago, I reviewed Business and Commercial Litigation in Federal Courts (3d ed.), concluding then that notwithstanding the dwindling “brick-and-mortar,” traditional law libraries, this multi-volume treatise is a worthy tool in the arsenal of the business litigator. Well, now nineteen years after its inception, the treatise, Business and Commercial Litigation in Federal Courts (4th ed.) (“BCL”), is in its Fourth Edition, having added twenty-five new chapters leading to three more volumes. Is it still worth the shelf space? Unquestionably, this landmark treatise remains an essential guide for commercial litigators and in-house counsel alike. The addition of the new …

The Crazy Maze Of Food Labeling And Food Claims Laws, Patrick Meyer
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
This Article critiques the role of the FDA in providing consumers with accurate and relevant food label information, identifies impediments in the pursuit of its mission, and offers solutions to those impediments.
Part I of this Article traces the history of U.S. food labeling and health claims laws. Current food laws and their regulation have developed over time. The first federal legislation was passed in the early 1900s. The food laws of today have certainly been influenced by past food laws, which were largely a reaction to societal events. A brief summary of the historical development of our nation’s …

Undergraduates’ Preference Between Web Search Engines And Reference Sources For Research Activities In Two Universities In South West Nigeria, Olawale Oyewole, Gabriel 'Bunmi Alegbeleye Prof.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The development of web search engines has provided an alternative for undergraduates to access the needed information for their research activities without utilising library resources, especially reference sources. This avenue created by web search engines is viewed by some as detrimental, as undergraduates now display apathy towards the use of reference sources, even though web search engines have their own limitations. Based on this, the main objective of this study was therefore to examine undergraduates’ preference between web search engines and reference sources for research activities. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study and the study population consisted of …
