Ecosystemic Resilience Relative To Increasing Populations Of Unwed Mothers In Korea: A Preliminary Mixed Methods Investigation, Hyeseong Kang Nov 2018

Ecosystemic Resilience Relative To Increasing Populations Of Unwed Mothers In Korea: A Preliminary Mixed Methods Investigation, Hyeseong Kang

Doctoral Dissertations

The number of unwed mothers in Korea who raise their children on their own, instead of placing them up for adoption, is increasing. Even in the face of social stigma and discrimination, unwed mothers are beginning to advocate for their rights as mothers and change public perceptions of and cultural assumptions about unwed mothers. The purpose of this research is to explore unwed mothers’ perceptions about their own resilience in wider contexts and the facilitative factors that may be contributing to this. This study used an exploratory sequential design in which qualitative interview data were first collected to explore these …

Cross-Talk Between Different Dna Sensors In The Cytosol, Ishita Banerjee Nov 2018

Cross-Talk Between Different Dna Sensors In The Cytosol, Ishita Banerjee

Doctoral Dissertations

DNA released into the cytoplasm as a consequence of microbial infection or pathology can be recognized by the host sensor, Absent in melanoma (AIM) 2 that leads to the assembly and activation of the inflammasome complex and cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) that induces type-I Interferon (IFN) production. Inflammasome activated caspase-1 cleaves gasdermin-D leading to pore-formation in the plasma membrane that subsequently results in pyroptosis. In this study we found that activated gasdermin-D negatively regulates cGAS-induced type-I IFN production in a pyroptosis and interleukin (IL)-1b and IL-18 independent manner. Mechanistic studies showed that gasdermin-D pore formation lead to a loss of …

The Utilization Of Perceptual Motor-Learning Principles For The Acquisition Of Head Voice In The Post-Adolescent Bass Voice, Anthony Leathem Nov 2018

The Utilization Of Perceptual Motor-Learning Principles For The Acquisition Of Head Voice In The Post-Adolescent Bass Voice, Anthony Leathem

Doctoral Dissertations

Over the last two centuries, knowledge of the voice has grown exponentially due to advances in science, technology, and medicine. One no longer needs to guess regarding certain functions of the instrument through pure empiricism, but rather, principles or ideas can be brought to the laboratory and tested through simulation and studies. In the last few decades, scientists and pedagogues have realized that registration is not solely the result of laryngeal musculature, but also has implications in the acoustic environment of the vocal tract. This discovery has completely changed the way a teacher may look at training a voice, or …

Vulnerability Of Small Island Developing States Across Multiple Scales, Neil Oculi Nov 2018

Vulnerability Of Small Island Developing States Across Multiple Scales, Neil Oculi

Doctoral Dissertations

Abstract: Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are among the countries most vulnerable to climate change because of their isolation, geopolitical stature, and limited resources. Climate change will continue to exacerbate SIDS’ vulnerabilities. With this in mind, in this dissertation, I will investigate implications of vulnerabilities of SIDS at global, regional, and local scales.

The first chapter examines the discourse on vulnerability to climate change and its many complexities. Among these is the constant tension between policy makers and academics about vulnerability. This chapter unpacks these complexities in order to analyze how SIDS deal with the notion of vulnerability at the …

Clinical Outcomes Of Antibiotic Prophylaxis In Vaginal Delivery Women In Ramathibodi Hospital, Nitaya Rotjananirunkit Nov 2018

Clinical Outcomes Of Antibiotic Prophylaxis In Vaginal Delivery Women In Ramathibodi Hospital, Nitaya Rotjananirunkit

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

The results of this study support that the clinical practice guideline for using antibiotic prophylaxis would be certainly helpful for vaginal delivery mothers in rational drug use. The rational use of antibiotics would be unnecessary for prophylaxis in term labor mothers after birth via vaginal delivery.

Research Mentoring And Scientist Identity: Insights From Undergraduates And Their Mentors, Rachael D. Robnett, Paul A. Nelson, Eileen L. Zurbriggen, Faye J. Crosby, Martin M. Chemers Nov 2018

Research Mentoring And Scientist Identity: Insights From Undergraduates And Their Mentors, Rachael D. Robnett, Paul A. Nelson, Eileen L. Zurbriggen, Faye J. Crosby, Martin M. Chemers

Psychology Faculty Research

Background Mentored research apprenticeships are a common feature of academic outreach programs that aim to promote diversity in science fields. The current study tests for links between three forms of mentoring (instrumental, socioemotional, and negative) and the degree to which undergraduates psychologically identify with science. Participants were 66 undergraduate-mentor dyads who worked together in a research apprenticeship. The undergraduate sample was predominantly composed of women, first-generation college students, and members of ethnic groups that are historically underrepresented in science. Results Findings illustrated that undergraduates who reported receiving more instrumental and socioemotional mentoring were higher in scientist identity. Further, mentors who …

Health Promotion Toward Knowledge And Intention For Early Detection Of Cervical Cancer In Commercial Sex Workers, Desi Rusmiati, Tiurlan Yunetty Silitonga, Warendi Warendi

Kesmas

Cervical cancer is one of the cancer types that become a haunting danger for many women in the world. In Indonesia, the prevalence rate reached 0.8% or an estimated 98,692 patients. Its prevalence increased to 10% in the commercial sex worker group. This study aimed to explain the effect of health promotion on knowledge and intention for early detection of cervical cancer using the inspection of visual acetate method in the commercial sex workers. This study was quantitative with a quasi-experimental type, one group of pretest and posttest design. The population sample included the commercial sex workers at Genteng Subvillage, …

Ion Exchange For Nutrient Recovery Coupled With Biosolids-Derived Biochar Pretreatment To Remove Micropollutants, Yiran Tong, Lee K. Kimbell, Anna Avila, Patrick J. Mcnamara, Brooke K. Mayer Nov 2018

Ion Exchange For Nutrient Recovery Coupled With Biosolids-Derived Biochar Pretreatment To Remove Micropollutants, Yiran Tong, Lee K. Kimbell, Anna Avila, Patrick J. Mcnamara, Brooke K. Mayer

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Wastewater, especially anaerobic treatment effluent, contains high ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N) and inorganic orthophosphate (PO4-P), which necessitate additional treatment to meet stringent discharge regulations. Ion exchange regeneration is a process that can be adopted for not only removing but also recovering nutrients. However, recovering nutrients by ion exchange from nutrient-rich effluents that also contain micropollutants (which typically pass through anaerobic treatment as well) may result in subsequent problems, since micropollutants could end up in ion exchange effluent, regenerant, or recovered fertilizer products. Micropollutant removal by a nonselective adsorbent, such as biosolids-derived biochar, before nutrient recovery processes would …

Diel Periodicity Of Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Drift In A Coastal Stream In Northern Venezuela, M. Daniela Mendoza, José V. Montoya, Belkys Y. Perez Nov 2018

Diel Periodicity Of Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Drift In A Coastal Stream In Northern Venezuela, M. Daniela Mendoza, José V. Montoya, Belkys Y. Perez

Neotropical Biodiversity

Aquatic macroinvertebrates and organic matter (OM) are transported downstream with the current, in a process that is modulated by different mechanisms in the ecosystem. Macroinvertebrate drift and OM transport are processes involving interactions between organisms and the environment at multiple spatial and temporal scales. The objective of this study was to describe benthic aquatic macroinvertebrate drift in one of the least disturbed streams of northern Venezuela during the dry season. Aquatic macroinvertebrate drift and OM transport were assessed on three different dates, sampling every three hours for each diel cycle using three drift nets. Aquatic macroinvertebrate drift exhibited a clear …

Neotropical Biodiversity

The marine biodiversity program of CENAIM-ESPOL focuses on sessile invertebrates from the “‘El Pelado’ marine reserve”. The present study aims at understanding the different hierarchical levels of biodiversity found at the “El Pelado” and to guide biodiscovery initiatives. Generated biodiversity data were systematized in a database (Darwin Core standard) and integrated into a geographic information system that uses webGIS as a search engine. In this way, the information becomes available to the academy and entities involved in the management of coastal resources.
