Documentary Production As A Site Of Struggle: State, Capital, And Precarity In The Contemporary Chinese Documentary, Jiachun Hong
Documentary Production As A Site Of Struggle: State, Capital, And Precarity In The Contemporary Chinese Documentary, Jiachun Hong
Dissertations
Documentary filmmakers have been considered artists, authors, or intellectuals, but rarely as labor. This study investigates how the nature of work as well as life is changing for those who work in the expanding area of TV documentary in China, in the midst of China’s shift towards a market-based economy. How do documentary makers reconcile their passion for documentary making with the increasingly precarious conditions of work? And, how do they cope with and resist the pressures of neoliberalism to survive in increasingly competitive local and global markets? Based on data gathered through the interviews with 40 practitioners from January …

Psychology: Faculty Publications
Hoarding disorder is characterized by difficulty parting with possessions and by clutter that impairs the functionality of living spaces. Cognitive behavioral therapy conducted by a therapist (individual or in a group) for hoarding symptoms has shown promise. For those who cannot afford or access the services of a therapist, one alternative is an evidence-based, highly structured, short-term, skills-based group using CBT principles but led by non-professional facilitators (the Buried in Treasures [BIT] Workshop). BIT has achieved improvement rates similar to those of psychologist-led CBT. Regardless of modality, however, clinically relevant symptoms remain after treatment, and new approaches to augment existing …
Combinatorial Therapy Of Doxorubicin And Mdr1 Sirna By Polymeric Micellar Nanoparticles In Treatment Of Multidrug Resistance In Breast Cancer, David Lamar Oglesby
Combinatorial Therapy Of Doxorubicin And Mdr1 Sirna By Polymeric Micellar Nanoparticles In Treatment Of Multidrug Resistance In Breast Cancer, David Lamar Oglesby
All Theses
Despite tremendous progress within the field of oncology, highly metastatic forms of breast cancer remain particularly challenging to effectively treat. Systemically delivered chemotherapy with cytotoxic agents typically requires some convalescence time between treatments – allowing rapidly growing cancer types to develop resistance. Multidrug resistance, also known as pump-dependent, is particularly difficult to treat as it functions through overexpression of P-glycoprotein, an efflux pump which can produce resistance to a range of chemotherapeutics. We have previously developed the cationic micellar copolymer poly(lactide-co-glycolide)-g-poly(ethylenimine) (PgP) and demonstrated its capacity as a vector for gene therapy. Here, we examine the capacity of PgP in …

A Phenomenological Study Of Professional Master's Athletic Training Graduates' Lived Clinical Experiences, Laura Ann Wamsley
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the shared clinical experiences of post Spring 2014 graduates of CAATE-accredited professional master’s degree programs. The theories guiding this qualitative study were Kolb’s (1984) experiential learning theory as it theorizes that students learn best through experiences, such as clinical education (Witt, Colbert, & Kelly, 2013), and Astin’s (1999) student involvement theory that claims that the effectiveness of any educational policy or program is directly related to the capacity of that policy or practice to increase student involvement, meaning that a clinical education program that is designed to encourage student involvement will …

A Quantitative Examination Of The Relationship Between Leadership Style And Employee Job Satisfaction In Registered Nurses In The Pittsburgh Msa Region, Jeffrey Belsky
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Healthcare worker jobs, particularly in the nursing profession, are among the fastest growing occupations in the United States. However, the nursing field is overwhelmed with an aging workforce, low morale, ineffective leadership practices, employee dissatisfaction, and increased worker turnover. Healthcare organizations have witnessed an increase in employee job dissatisfaction amongst nurses, which ultimately has led to increased employment turnover among other negative consequences such as lack of organizational commitment, absenteeism, reduced patient care, and disgruntled employees. This quantitative, nonexperimental, correlational research examined the relationship between perceived Registered Nurse (RN) job satisfaction and leadership styles in the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area …

Using Tablet Technology To Teach Secondary Content Vocabulary: A Collective Case Study, Annie R. Raney
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this collective case study was to provide an understanding of the instructional methods of teachers who use tablet technology in middle school classrooms to teach complex content vocabulary. Dewey’s theory of constructivism guided this study, as it explains that students learn by building upon what they know. Middle school students add new terms to their existing vocabulary banks so that they can learn the related concepts in their content-area classes. The study took place in a southern state with technology standards that require students to use technology for reading and learning purposes. There is extensive research about …
Husbands' Experience Of Being Trusted By Their Wives: A Heuristic Study, Paul Andrew Johns
Husbands' Experience Of Being Trusted By Their Wives: A Heuristic Study, Paul Andrew Johns
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Trust is widely understood to be a critical component of interpersonal relationships. In an effort to understand this complex construct, the majority of research on dyadic trust has focused on the decision to trust and the interactions between a trustor and trusty, with a strong bent toward understanding the trustor’s experience. Surprisingly little is known about the experience of the trusty, or the recipient of trust, which if not remedied may result in erroneous assumptions about the experience of the trusty or an obscuration of the relational dynamics surrounding trust as a whole. Using qualitative, heuristic methodology, the author sought …

The Relationship Between Epistemological Beliefs And Attitudes Towards Science Of Undergraduate Elementary Education Majors, Renae Reimer Bullock
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Much of the educational research that has investigated the attitudes of pre-service elementary educators towards science has seemed to show that their attitudes are negative towards science. Research also indicates that factors of gender, perceived competence, anxiety, perceived relation to their lives, and epistemological beliefs are related to pre-service elementary educators’ attitudes towards science. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between epistemological beliefs of undergraduate elementary education majors at a large, private, faith-based university in the southeastern United States and their attitudes towards science. Schraw et al.’s Epistemological Beliefs Inventory (EBI) (Schraw, Bendixen, & Dunkle, 2002) …

What's Wrong With Obergefell, Gregg Strauss
What's Wrong With Obergefell, Gregg Strauss
Cardozo Law Review
Although Obergefell v. Hodges was a historic victory for progressive constitutional law, the Supreme Court's glorification of marriage created widespread anxiety among progressive family law scholars. Yet, the critics have still not explained why this marriage rhetoric arouses such moral indignation. Some critics predict Obergefell's rhetoric will shape family and constitutional law in ways that harm nonmarital families, but these forecasts rely on weak doctrinal arguments and cynical speculation about judicial behavior. Others argue Obergefell's rhetoric was gratuitously insulting. Is that as deep as the objection goes?
Obergefell's glorification of marriage is wrong, not because it was …
The "Foreign Agent Problem": An International Legal Solution To Domestic Restrictions On Non-Governmental Organizations, Jacqueline Van De Velde
The "Foreign Agent Problem": An International Legal Solution To Domestic Restrictions On Non-Governmental Organizations, Jacqueline Van De Velde
Cardozo Law Review
The United States' Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA), has recently come into the spotlight due to its use in the ongoing Russian election interference investigation. But the United States 'foreign agent restriction is only one of many: while FARA was the first of its kind, it now exists among a multitude of such restrictions. Too, the U.S. foreign agent restriction is lenient, compared to the restrictions appearing in other countries- restrictions that now are crippling civil society and to which international law is ill-equipped to respond. This Article analyzes this sudden avalanche of 'foreign agent" legislation: restrictive domestic legislation that …

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health
In many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) the double burden of malnutrition is high among adolescent girls, leading to poor health outcomes for the adolescent herself and sustained intergenerational effects. This underpins the importance of adequate dietary intake during this period of rapid biological development. The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the current dietary intake and practices among adolescent girls (10⁻19 years) in LMICs. We searched relevant databases and grey literature using MeSH terms and keywords. After applying specified inclusion and exclusion criteria, 227 articles were selected for data extraction, synthesis, and quality assessment. Of the included …

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
The human brain is a complex organ responsible for not only perceiving and sensing information in one’s environment, but also integrating and analyzing these details in a way that will allow an individual to comprehend the material. Scientists for centuries have been curious as to why people process their emotions and thoughts differently, resulting in unique and varied behavior. The manner in which a person comprehends information and whether or not they feel anxious as a result, may be connected to their intellectual and functional capacity. Human intelligence and the ability to function at a high level may be related …

The Ras superfamily of small GTPases are monomeric proteins that bind guanine nucleotides, and regulate many cellular signaling pathways. They function as molecular switches by shuttling between active GTP-bound and inactive GDP-bound states. The Ras superfamily consists of its subfamilies including Ras and Rho GTPases. Ras and Rho GTPases function to regulate cellular growth, transformation, transport, motility, traffic, and adhesion. Small GTPases reactions often require regulators, such as guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) and GTPase Activating Proteins (GAPs). GEFs mediate fast release of GDP and allow loading with GTP while GAPs accelerate the GTP hydrolysis to GDP. Redox agents also …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
Ionic Liquids (ILs) are state-of-the-art fluids that have found broad application in separation science. Owing to their unique physicochemical properties such as low vapor pressure, high thermal stability, and high viscosity, they were successfully used as stationary phase in gas chromatography (GC). By properly engineering their molecular structure, ionic liquids with tailor-made properties can be designed. Therefore, a systematic structure-function relationship can be established to study the effect of structural modification on the properties of ionic liquids. Herein, I describe the design and synthesis of several dicationic ionic liquids. The synthesized ILs were characterized in terms their physicochemical properties. The …

Genetic Analysis Of The Role Of Grp170b (T14g8.3) During Toxin Induced Protein Folding Stress In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Nancy T. Nsengiyumva
Biology Theses
Chaperones maintain cellular homeostasis by facilitating protein folding. However, under standard cultured conditions, Caenorhabditis elegans strains genetically deficient for the ER chaperone GRP170B (encoded by the T14G8.3 locus) seems unaffected by the loss of this large chaperone. For most ER chaperones, the loss of GRP170B chaperone increases sensitivity to toxins that disrupt protein folding in the ER. I hypothesized that GRP170B’s role may involve mediating the nematodes response to ER protein folding stress. To investigate a stress role for GRP170B chaperone, I analyzed the effect of toxins that are known to effect ER protein folding on nematodes deficient for the …

Gender, Gender Roles And Academic Success In Diverse College Students, Noelle Rowe
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
More than ever before, college serves as an important entity to further an individual’s personal and professional goals. An interesting pattern has emerged: women are outpacing men in college enrollment, as well as in degree attainment. Hegemonic masculinity serves as one of many theories to explain this gender gap. Additionally, little research has focused on the topic of hegemonic masculinity exhibited by men of color. Thus, this study had three purposes: to understand the academic behavior and achievement of racially diverse college students, understand how hegemonic masculinity contributes to decreased academic achievement among males, and how hegemonic masculinity differs across …
