Multi-Disciplinary And Shared Decision-Making Approach In The Management Of Organ-Confined Prostate Cancer, Syed M. Nazim, Mohamed Fawzy, Christian Bach, Hammad Ather
Multi-Disciplinary And Shared Decision-Making Approach In The Management Of Organ-Confined Prostate Cancer, Syed M. Nazim, Mohamed Fawzy, Christian Bach, Hammad Ather
Section of Urology
Decision-making in the management of organ-confined prostate cancer is complex as it is based on multi-factorial considerations. It is complicated by a multitude of issues, which are related to the patient, treatment, disease, availability of equipment(s), expertise, and physicians. Combination of all these factors play a major role in the decision-making process and provide for an interactive decisionmaking preferably in the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meeting. MDT decisions are comprehensive and are often based on all factors including patients’ biological status, disease and its aggressiveness, and physician and centres’ expertise. However, one important and often under rated factor is patient-related factors. …

Paris Baguette: A Korean's Brand Success In France, Singapore Management University
Paris Baguette: A Korean's Brand Success In France, Singapore Management University
Asian Management Insights
Winning the annual Coupe du Monde de Boulangerie, the most prestigious baking competition in the world, was no mean feat for South Korea’s Paris Baguette, a relatively new kid on the global baking block. It certainly did not get bigger than this—the French-inspired Korean franchise bakery chain had taken on its toughest challenge by entering the French market in early 2014, and now, just two years later, its baguettes had been officially declared as the best in the world. While the award and the ceremony—which was attended by French President Hollande himself—recognised the company’s baking expertise, it also showed how …

說不出的痛 : 家暴兒童的內心世界, Suk Mun, Sophia Law
Research Expression through Art : Visual Studies Faculty

Progressing Flight: A Transformative And Somatically-Informed Performance Practice For The Aerial Dance Student Practitioner, Rosalinda Rojas
Master's Theses
Somatic based methods is an emerging area of interest within the subject area of dance study and more recent in aerial movement practice. Somatic movement experiences have inherent, distinctive and transformative characteristics to deepen understanding and knowledge of the concept of soma. This thesis investigates how somatic based exercises might influence physical strength, endurance, body awareness and sensitivity in an original research design. The study incorporates Progressing Ballet Technique or traditional based aerial circus methods with an aim to answer three essential questions. How might the use of somatic based or traditional aerial movement methods improve students’ muscular strength and …

Improving Student Skills Through Video-Guided Assessments In The Dance Classroom, Kate Elizabeth Secor
Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to improve novice dance students’ technique and skill level through the use of video-guided summative assessments in the public high school classroom. The assessments and associated classroom activities examine how the use of video cameras can enhance movement instruction and promote the advancement of student skills if implemented in a meaningful way. The research was conducted in one semester with an introductory level dance class where nineteen student participants filmed themselves performing ballet exercises at the beginning and end of the semester. Participants and researcher assessed these videos using specific movement-based rubrics that measured …

Characterizing Ecological And Genetic Patterns Of The Colonizing Species Dubautia Scabra On The Big Island, Hawaii, Samantha Kaleigh Naibauer
Master's Theses
The Hawaiian Silversword Alliance (HSA) is a group of approximately 35 endemic species found on the Hawaiian Islands. The HSA is of particular interest due to the vast adaptive responses of its members across the Hawaiian Islands. Each of these plant species is generally limited to a very specific habitat type with a unique morphology and physiology. Dubautia scabra is the first angiosperm colonist of new lava flows, arriving in as few as two years after lava cools. The critical role D. scabra plays in this ecosystem gives a unique starting point for understanding downstream ecological processes such as seed …
An Investigation Of Enzymes Capable Of Activating Cannabinoid Prodrugs, Brittney J. Morgan
An Investigation Of Enzymes Capable Of Activating Cannabinoid Prodrugs, Brittney J. Morgan
Master's Theses
The plant Cannabis sativa contains a class of terpenophenols called cannabinoids which, in their active form, have been shown to have antiproliferative, anti-metastatic, anti-angiogenic, and pro-apoptotic effects on several types of cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. Cannabinoids have been shown to not exert this apoptotic activity in healthy cells and they do not elicit the usual side effects seen with conventional chemotherapies. However, naturally occurring prodrugs from Cannabis must first be converted into the active form to induce the apoptotic and other physiological activities. Although humans do not possess the enzyme(s) necessary for this conversion, several different …
The Boys Next Door: Progressing Disability Awareness And Representation Through Inclusive Production Practices, Shelby Lewis
The Boys Next Door: Progressing Disability Awareness And Representation Through Inclusive Production Practices, Shelby Lewis
Master's Theses
The Boys Next Door was a progressive and popular piece of theatre when first produced in 1986 and remains a ripe tool for spreading disability consciousness if mounted with research and respect. Playwright, Tom Griffin, chronicles a series of amusing and meaningful events in the lives of four men with varying levels of cognitive impairments told through the lens of Jack Palmer, their able-bodied supervisor. The goal of this thesis production was to illuminate the opportunities, challenges, and considerations required to produce this play with a message that is progressive to the goals of the disability community rather than detrimental. …
Implementating A Transitional Care Program To Reduce Hospital Readmissions In Medicare Recipients: A Research Translation Pilot Project, Gail Rattigan
Implementating A Transitional Care Program To Reduce Hospital Readmissions In Medicare Recipients: A Research Translation Pilot Project, Gail Rattigan
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
Patients discharged from hospital to home, especially the chronically ill and older adults, are too frequently readmitted within 30 days. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (n.d.; 2017) along with other interdisciplinary researchers have proposed, studied, and implemented strategies to decrease this excessive and expensive phenomenon. After the implementation of the Hospital Readmission Reduction Program in 2009, preventable readmissions have decreased but remain at unacceptable levels. Care transitions from hospital to home have been implicated as perilous and fraught with communication breakdown and lack of patient support and follow up. Strategies aimed at both the hospitalization phase and the …
Rape Messaging, Alena Allen
Rape Messaging, Alena Allen
Fordham Law Review
When feminists began advocating for rape reform in the 1970s, the rape message was clear: rape was not a crime to be taken seriously because women lie. After decades of criminal law reform, the legal requirement that a woman vigorously resist a man’s sexual advances to prove that she was raped has largely disappeared from the statute books, and, in theory, rape shield laws make a woman’s prior sexual history irrelevant. Yet, despite what the law dictates, rape law reforms have not had a “trickle-down” effect, where changes in law lead to changes in attitude. Women are still believed to …
You Say Intrastate, I Say Interstate: Why We Should Call The Whole Thing Off, Andrew Wiktor
You Say Intrastate, I Say Interstate: Why We Should Call The Whole Thing Off, Andrew Wiktor
Fordham Law Review
As society evolves, so do criminals. In the early twentieth century, America embraced the automobile, passed the Volstead Act, and created a national highway program. These developments inadvertently paved the way for interstate criminal enterprise. Infamous gangsters such as Al Capone were able to operate large-scale racketeering syndicates without fear of being prosecuted for two primary reasons: (1) states lacked jurisdiction, resources, or both to go after such criminals, and (2) there was no federal criminal statute to fill the gap left by the states. But as criminals evolve, so does society. In 1961, Congress, at the urging of Attorney …
The Influence Of Depressive Symptoms On Frn Amplitude: An Eeg Study, Jonathan Burton
The Influence Of Depressive Symptoms On Frn Amplitude: An Eeg Study, Jonathan Burton
USC Aiken Psychology Theses
Background: Individuals diagnosed with depression demonstrate differences in neural activation patterns detectable using electroencephalogram (EEG). One of these differences has been specifically linked with the event-related potential (ERP) component called feedback-related negativity (FRN). In participants diagnosed with depression, the FRN has been shown to have larger amplitudes in response to negative feedback. However, previous research has only specifically looked at the difference of this amplitude between groups, specifically those with and those without a diagnosis of depression. Objective: The goal of the current study was to examine whether a continuous range of depressive symptoms in participants can predict FRN amplitudes, …

The Effect Of Retort Processing Factors On The Severity Of Film Surface Impression, Jirawich Panin
The Effect Of Retort Processing Factors On The Severity Of Film Surface Impression, Jirawich Panin
All Theses
Retort processing conditions of temperature, overpressure, and sterilization time were used to determine the impression depth on the pouch surface from contact with the retort rack during retort processing, also referred to as a waffling defect. Retortable flexible pouches were filled with 1,000 mL of water and processed in a horizontal water spray retort. A confocal laser scanning microscope was used to measure severity of the waffling defects. Data collected during this study showed that higher temperatures resulted in higher measured impression depth values (p<0.05) in all of the tested combinations. However, when the pouches were retorted at different temperatures, different effects of retort overpressure were observed. At a low temperature (111 deg. C), the higher overpressure resulted in higher severity of the waffling defects (p<0.05). In contrast, at a high temperature (131 deg. C), the higher overpressure resulted in lower severity of the waffling defects (p<0.05). When samples were retorted at different sterilization time settings, there was only one condition where a statistical difference in the impression depth values was observed (p<0.05). The longer sterilization time resulted in higher measured impression depth (p<0.05) only if the samples were retorted at a high temperature of 131 deg. C with a low overpressure of 26 psig. There was no statistical difference (p>0.05) in measured impression depth when samples were retorted at different sterilization time settings in …0.05)>
Knowledge Of Mental Health Disorders And Resources By Military Personnel, Savanna Taylor
Knowledge Of Mental Health Disorders And Resources By Military Personnel, Savanna Taylor
All Theses
With more soldiers returning home to the United States than any war era before, there is a need for research to understand military personnel’s mental health and how they use resources, like the Veteran’s Affairs and non-profit organizations. This study serves to further our understanding about service members’ knowledge on this subject. This study adds to the literature by conducting semi-structured interviews with 15 service members who had deployed on either United States military bases or ships, or peace-keeping missions, overseas after 9/11. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and thoroughly analyzed using a narrative approach. Five important themes emerged from …

Betel Mania, From Culture To Cancer: Digestive And Discursive Uses Of The Betel Nut (Areca Catechu) In Guam, Anne Perez Hattori
Pacific Studies
Chewed in the Marianas for centuries, pugua, known scientifically as Areca catechu and colloquially as betel nut, is the world’s fourth most commonly used psychoactive substance after tobacco, alcohol, and caffeine-containing beverages. It has and continues to serve numerous cultural, social, political, medicinal, and economic purposes. At the same time, health concerns are mounting against pugua due to its classification as a carcinogen by the World Health Organization, as well as to high rates of cancer among Chamorros and to federal research funds that promote an antichewing agenda. This paper uses a range of sources to examine the historical use …

Bias accusations have eroded trust in journalism to impartially check facts. Traditionally journalists have avoided responding to such accusations, resulting in an imbalanced flow of arguments about the news media. This study tests what would happen if journalists spoke up more in defense of their profession, while simultaneously also testing effects of doing more fact checking. A five-day field experiment manipulated whether an online news portal included fact check stories and opinion pieces defending journalism. Fact checking was beneficial in terms of three democratically desirable outcomes–media trust, epistemic political efficacy, and future news use intent–only when defense of journalism stories …

Understanding Fear Of Zika: Personal, Interpersonal, And Media Influences, Chun Yang, James Price Dillard, Ruobing Li
Faculty Publications
Fear of infectious disease often motivates people to protect themselves. But, it can also produce negative bio-social-psychological effects whose severity is on par with those of the disease. The WHO declaration of Zika as a world health crisis presented an opportunity to study factors that bring about fear. Beginning nine days after the WHO announcement, data were gathered from women aged 18–35 living in the southern United States (N = 719). Respondents reported experiencing fear of Zika at levels akin to those reported following other significant crises/disasters (e.g., the terrorist attacks of 9/11). Fear increased as a function of (1) …

Cigarette Litter Leachates: A Statistical Study Of Elements In Freshwater And Saltwater, Cintly Guzman Hernandez
Honors Theses
Cigarette butts are the most common item found in coastal litter cleanups as approximately 4.5 trillion smoked cigarette butts are discarded into the environment every year. Cigarette butts can leach toxic heavy metals and nicotine along with other compounds from tobacco combustion. Past research in our lab has analyzed elements leached from cigarette butts into freshwater. The cigarette butts consisted of smoked and unsmoked butts that were soaked varying periods of time, and at different pH levels to identify the relationship of these variables to the amount of metal leached. The elements analyzed were Al, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, …

The Prologue To Management: The Effects Of Historical Anthropogenic Activities On Forest Ecosystems And Current Management Opportunities In Southwestern Illinois, John Timothy Lovseth
Dissertations
Forest disturbance occurs on a wide gradient of selectiveness and creates new growth opportunities for adapted species. Across the spectrum of disturbance, anthropogenic disturbance influences community assembly in the Midwest more than other mechanisms but is its role in shaping and maintaining ecosystems is inadequately considered in most discussions on the historic range of variability (HRV). Forest resiliency is threatened by unprecedented agents of ecosystem change such as invasive species and reduced regeneration potential of native species. Historic anthropogenic disturbance largely resulted in forest conditions which commonly contained high value attributes like heterogeneity across habitat types and landscape diversity, yet …
