Which Activities Count? Using Experimental Data To Understand Conceptualizations Of Physical Activity, Rachel Cusatis, Dana Garbarski Dec 2018

Which Activities Count? Using Experimental Data To Understand Conceptualizations Of Physical Activity, Rachel Cusatis, Dana Garbarski

Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

US health surveys consistently report that men and those with higher socioeconomic status (SES) engage in more physical activity than women and lower SES counterparts, using questions that ask about physical activity during leisure time. However, social characteristics such as gender and SES shape understandings of and access to leisure-based physical activity as well as other domains where healthy activity is available – namely house work, care work, and paid work. Thus, the physical activity of US adults may look different when what counts as physical activity expands beyond leisure activity.

Morphometric Characteristics And Time To Hatch As Efficacious Indicators For Potential Nanotoxicity Assay In Zebrafish, Seyed-Mohammadreza Samaee, Nafiseh Manteghi, Robert A. Yokel, Mohammad Reza Mohajeri-Tehrani Dec 2018

Morphometric Characteristics And Time To Hatch As Efficacious Indicators For Potential Nanotoxicity Assay In Zebrafish, Seyed-Mohammadreza Samaee, Nafiseh Manteghi, Robert A. Yokel, Mohammad Reza Mohajeri-Tehrani

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Although the effects of nano-sized titania (nTiO2) on hatching events (change in hatching time and total hatching) in zebrafish have been reported, additional consequences of nTiO2 exposure (i.e., the effects of nTiO2-induced changes in hatching events and morphometric parameters on embryo-larvae development and survivability) have not been reported. To address this knowledge gap, embryos 4 h postfertilization were exposed to nTiO2 (0, 0.01, 10, and 1000 μg/mL) for 220 h. Hatching rate (58, 82, and 106 h postexposure [hpe]), survival rate (8 times from 34 to 202 hpe), and 21 morphometric characteristics (8 times …

Lrrk1 Regulation Of Actin Assembly In Osteoclasts Involves Serine 5 Phosphorylation Of L-Plastin, Mingjue Si, Helen Goodluck, Canjun Zeng, Songqin Pan, Elizabeth M Todd, Sharon Celeste Morley, Xuezhong Qin, Subburaman Mohan, Weirong Xing Dec 2018

Lrrk1 Regulation Of Actin Assembly In Osteoclasts Involves Serine 5 Phosphorylation Of L-Plastin, Mingjue Si, Helen Goodluck, Canjun Zeng, Songqin Pan, Elizabeth M Todd, Sharon Celeste Morley, Xuezhong Qin, Subburaman Mohan, Weirong Xing

Open Access Publications

Mice with disruption of Lrrk1 and patients with nonfunctional mutant Lrrk1 exhibit severe osteopetrosis phenotypes because of osteoclast cytoskeletal dysfunction. To understand how Lrrk1 regulates osteoclast function by modulating cytoskeleton rearrangement, we examined the proteins that are differentially phosphorylated in wild-type mice and Lrrk1-deficient osteoclasts by metal affinity purification coupled liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) analyses. One of the candidates that we identified by LC/MS is L-plastin, an actin bundling protein. We found that phosphorylation of L-plastin at serine (Ser) residues 5 was present in wild-type osteoclasts but not in Lrrk1-deficient cells. Western blot analyses with antibodies specific for Ser5 phosphorylated …

Reusable, publicly available data is a pillar of open science and rapid advancement of cancer imaging research. Sharing data from completed research studies not only saves research dollars required to collect data, but also helps insure that studies are both replicable and reproducible. The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA) is a global shared repository for imaging data related to cancer. Insuring the consistency, scientific utility, and anonymity of data stored in TCIA is of utmost importance. As the rate of submission to TCIA has been increasing, both in volume and complexity of DICOM objects stored, the process of curation of collections …

Implementing A Nursing Professional Model To Improve Staff Nurse Engagement And Teamwork, Lakhbir Sohal Dec 2018

Implementing A Nursing Professional Model To Improve Staff Nurse Engagement And Teamwork, Lakhbir Sohal

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Problem: Several studies have examined the role of the nurse and reveal that job-related stress, defined as an overload of high acuity patients, physical and emotional demands of the job, and lack of autonomy, may impact engagement and teamwork (Garrosa et al., 2010). Evidence suggests a direct correlation between high levels of staff engagement and teamwork improves quality outcomes for the organization. Therefore, it is imperative that we measure staff engagement and teamwork on our nursing units to ensure that quality indicators are met and that as an organization we provide safe patient care.

Context: The purpose of this Doctor …

India’S Unbalanced Urban Growth: An Appraisal Of Trends And Policies, Purva Sharma Dec 2018

India’S Unbalanced Urban Growth: An Appraisal Of Trends And Policies, Purva Sharma

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

India is considered as a low-level urbanized country. However, the country has experienced a sharp increase in the number of towns and peri-urban areas during the last decade. Despite India’s efforts in planned development, the urban sector has generally remained unplanned and chaotic. It appears that policy interventions have not been able to achieve the desired goals and needs of the urban sector fully. This paper examines the urban policy measures taken since independence and highlights the inadequacies and dilemmas in the urban context of India. This analysis shows how metropolitan areas are spreading outwards due to shifts in population …

Dementia Knowledge Among Hispanic Family Caregivers, Carmen Hernandez Gomez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The Health Projects Center (HPC) was established in 1980 as a non-profit corporation serving Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito Counties. HPC offers programs to health and social service professionals, older adults, and family caregivers. At HPC many caregivers experience health problems associated with caregiving distress. To address this concern, “Dementia Knowledge Among Hispanic Caregivers” was implemented, to determine the effectiveness of the Caregiver Support Group at HPC. This group consisted of caregivers of Mexican descent, whose primary language is Spanish, who are caring for a loved one who suffers from dementia or a cognitive disorder. In order to assess …

Reference Tracking In Ethiopian Sign Language, Katelin Jo French Dec 2018

Reference Tracking In Ethiopian Sign Language, Katelin Jo French

Theses and Dissertations

Very little has been written about Ethiopian Sign Language, but the language has obvious differences from more well-studied signed languages. This thesis focuses on striking differences in reference tracking: looking at all the different referring types—lexical items, points, eye gaze, body shift, agreement, and zero reference—and their distribution throughout narrative texts. Through this process, Ethiopian Sign Language has proved different from expectations based on previously studied signed languages. This language uses loci with much more flexibility, depending on role shift alone to strongly establish loci for entities. Another way this language differs from other languages is its lack of entity …

The Bureau Of Land Management's Infirm Compensatory Mitigation Policy, Justin Pidot Dec 2018

The Bureau Of Land Management's Infirm Compensatory Mitigation Policy, Justin Pidot

Fordham Environmental Law Review

Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke has described “compensatory mitigation” as “un-American” and “extortion.” In keeping with that view, on July 26, 2018, the Bureau of Land Management (“BLM”) adopted a radical new policy that disclaims statutory authority to impose compensatory mitigation measures.

Notwithstanding the aspersions the Secretary has cast, compensatory mitigation is a common-sense policy instrument that has been a mainstay of environmental and public lands policy for decades. It is a tool through which an agency authorizing private activities—drilling oil wells, filling wetlands—conditions its approval upon the implementation of measures to offset attendant environmental harms. Compensatory mitigation thereby …

Sb 17 - Alcoholic Beverages, Lauren A. Newman, Erin N. Winn

Georgia State University Law Review

Georgia law previously allowed counties and municipalities to permit the sale of alcoholic beverages on Sundays from 12:30 P.M. until 11:30 P.M. This Act, deemed “the Brunch Bill,” authorizes the counties and municipalities that have affirmatively voted by referendum to sell alcoholic beverages on Sundays to sell them earlier, at 11:00 A.M., if approved by a second referendum vote. This change applies to restaurants that make at least 50% of their revenue from the sale of food and hotels, and Georgia wineries.

Geographic Discrimination: Of Place, Space, Hillbillies, And Home, William Rhee, Stephen C. Scott Dec 2018

Geographic Discrimination: Of Place, Space, Hillbillies, And Home, William Rhee, Stephen C. Scott

West Virginia Law Review

This Essay explores the two-sided challenge of geographic discrimination, where U.S. citizens receive disparate treatment from other citizens or the government solely because of where they live or self-identify as home, through the interdisciplinary concepts of space, place, and distance; and an original examination of discrimination against Appalachians. Such disparate treatment is unavoidable and even arguably politically correct. Where we call home matters in a number of legitimate ways to include our access to jobs and services, culture, educational opportunities, and other basic human capabilities. Although technology has increased individual mobility more than ever before, a majority of Americans nevertheless …

The False Hope Of Deliberate Forgetting: A Critical Response To Proponents Of Limited-Use Memory Manipulation, Peter A. Depergola Ii Dec 2018

The False Hope Of Deliberate Forgetting: A Critical Response To Proponents Of Limited-Use Memory Manipulation, Peter A. Depergola Ii

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

The emergence of manipulation techniques that dampen, disassociate, erase, and replace unsavory episodic memories have given pause to even the most ardent proponents of the practice. Supporters of memory manipulation have since clarified that the interventions should be made available exclusively in extreme and limited-use cases. In light of the narrowing of this approach, the present essay examines the arguments in favor of limited-use memory manipulation (LUMM) for the two most commonly-cited circumstances in which the practice is claimed to be justified: post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance addiction. After examining the neuroscience of PTSD and substance addition, the critical …

Sundays With Roque: A Tale Of Friendship And Companionship, Tomas G. Rosario Dec 2018

Sundays With Roque: A Tale Of Friendship And Companionship, Tomas G. Rosario

Philosophy Department Faculty Publications

“Sundays with Roque” is partly narrative, mainly reflective essay patterned after the best-selling memoir Tuesdays with Morrie. Like Tuesdays with Morrie, which tells the inspiring story of the relationship between writer Mitch Albom and his professor Morrie Schwartz, this narrative-reflective essay is about the equally inspirational bond between Leovino Garcia and his former professor Fr. Roque Ferriols, S.J. Their relation is a tale of friendship and companionship that manifest extraordinary commitment, fidelity, and sacrifices from both parties in their mutual care and dynamic love for one another. What is most noteworthy, however, in “Sundays with Roque,” is that it serves …

A Systematic Review Comparison Of Ketogenic Dietary Treatment Efficacy For Alzheimer’S Disease, Joshua Chavez Dec 2018

A Systematic Review Comparison Of Ketogenic Dietary Treatment Efficacy For Alzheimer’S Disease, Joshua Chavez

Undergraduate Honors Theses

There is evidence suggesting that Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology can be improved through the use of mechanistic/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibition therapy. Regulation of mTOR is responsible for mediating cell growth by regulating cell processes such as autophagy, transcription, and translation. Evidence suggests that a ketogenic dietary (KD) treatment may result in decreased mTOR signaling, thus making KD a potential treatment for AD. The objective of this systematic review was to explore the efficacy of current AD medications and compare the results to preliminary KD treatment for AD. The biochemical relevance of mTOR inhibition for AD and the relevance …

Wet Markets And Avian Influenza: Public Policy Decisions In Hong Kong, Shawn Smallman Dec 2018

Wet Markets And Avian Influenza: Public Policy Decisions In Hong Kong, Shawn Smallman

International & Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

After the emergence of H5N1 avian influenza in 1997 Hong Kong implemented a sophisticated system to regulate live poultry markets. While this system is well implemented and thorough, it also has limitations. The rise of H7N9 avian influenza (which is typically acquired through contact with poultry, including in live markets) makes this an appropriate time to revisit the ethical and practical issues related to this trade. Based on data from field observations of live markets in Hong Kong, and interviews with experts in the field, this paper recommends that the government of Hong Kong create a committee to examine the …

Medical Malpractice Compensation Reform, Ruby Dean Dec 2018

Medical Malpractice Compensation Reform, Ruby Dean

Political Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Tort reform legislation is a topic that has been discussed and studied heavily in the states of Texas and California. This is because it has been claimed that these states have had success in bringing more doctors into the states. This thesis studies those states, as well as the state of Arkansas. It examines Arkansas because tort reform legislation was an issue brought up in the most recent election in November 2018 in that state. Although Arkansas’ tort reform ballot measure was removed from the ballot by the Supreme Court of Arkansas, a similar measure could still be brought forth …

Regional Specialization Of The Adult Meninges Supports Different Brain Areas And Alters With Age, Christina Ann Calabrese Dec 2018

Regional Specialization Of The Adult Meninges Supports Different Brain Areas And Alters With Age, Christina Ann Calabrese

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The meninges comprise three heterogeneous connective tissue coverings, referred to as the dura, arachnoid, and pia mater, which completely envelop the brain and spinal cord. Given the meninges’ vast coverage over the entire CNS and its unique development, I hypothesized that regional leptomeninges (arachnoid and pia mater layers combined) provide specialized support to different brain areas. During development, anterior meninges, overlying the frontal cortex, derive from neural crest cells that are ectodermal in origin. Posterior meninges, overlying the midbrain to the spinal cord, derive from a mesodermal lineage. This difference in lineage and location suggests potential functional differences between the …
