Sources Of Strength: A Peer Lead Suicide Prevention Program., Amanda Schutz

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Sources of Strength is a peer lead upstream prevention program developed by Mark LoMurray in 1998. In 2009 it was listed on the National Best Practices Registry by the Suicide Prevention Resource Center and The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. In 2011, Sources of Strength was listed on SAMHSA's National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP). The overall mission of the program is to empower peer leaders and caring adults to impact their school climate through the power of promoting youth-adult connectedness and spreading messages of hope, help, and strength throughout their school. This is done through a deliberate …

Trauma Sensitive Schools And The Pbs Framework, Dr. Melissa W. Sadin Dec 2018

Trauma Sensitive Schools And The Pbs Framework, Dr. Melissa W. Sadin

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Recent research in the field of interpersonal neurobiology shows that the toxic stress that results from early exposure to traumatic situations (abuse, neglect, in-utero exposures to drugs and alcohol, exposure to domestic violence, and poverty) impacts brain development. Neurobiology is a significant, and often overlooked, aspect is in a child's social and emotional development. The change in brain development can be connected to bullying (both perpetrators and bullies), attendance, discipline, and to the achievement gap.

The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study discovered that childhood trauma leads to the adult onset of chronic diseases, depression and other mental illness, violence and …

The Social Context Of Women's Sustained Participation In Activism, Susan Paterson Dec 2018

The Social Context Of Women's Sustained Participation In Activism, Susan Paterson

Open Access Dissertations

Recently, the resurgence of interest in feminist activism has been discussed by media and news outlets. It is still relatively unknown what contextual factors affect sustained participation, as well as how women from different backgrounds sustain activism in the face of compounding oppressions. This grounded theory explores the contexts of sustained participation through two research questions: (1) what are the contextual factors that influence women's sustained participation in activism?, and (2) how is the dynamic between identity and context reflected in sustained participation in activism? Nine women activists in Miami-Dade County were interviewed about their experiences in feminist movements, specifically …

They Responded, We Listened: Improving Stroke Education And Patient Satisfaction, Melissa Meighan

DNP Qualifying Manuscripts

The annual decrease in stroke mortality rates in the United States has slowed, but in certain populations, such as Hispanics and in southern U.S. states, mortality rates are increasing. Stroke remains the number one cause of adult disability. A previous stroke is a risk factor for a second stroke. Prompt treatment is essential for positive outcomes. Patients need to present to the hospital no more than 4.5 hours from last known well for intravenous alteplase treatment and six to 24 hours from last known well for endovascular therapy. Based on the literature, the majority of patients are not presenting to …

How Does The New Urban Agenda Align With Comprehensive Planning In U.S. Cities? A Case Study Of Asheville, North Carolina, Matthew Cohen, Geoffrey Habron Dec 2018

How Does The New Urban Agenda Align With Comprehensive Planning In U.S. Cities? A Case Study Of Asheville, North Carolina, Matthew Cohen, Geoffrey Habron

Earth and Environmental Sciences Publications

Despite growing interests in sustainable urban development, planning lacks unifying themes or directives for achieving sustainability in cities. While professional rating systems provide some guidance, they can be context-specific by country and may at best target weak sustainability as their intended outcome. The United Nations’ New Urban Agenda attempts to offer a singular vision for urban sustainability, and its language appears flexible enough to apply across contexts. In this research, we explore the extent that emergent themes from the New Urban Agenda can guide urban planning for sustainability, specifically in the United States (U.S.). We develop inductive codes from the …

A Comparison Of Different Methods Of Dehydration On Baccharis Salicifolia, Michael Nicholas, Sinjun Hong Dec 2018

A Comparison Of Different Methods Of Dehydration On Baccharis Salicifolia, Michael Nicholas, Sinjun Hong

Featured Research

Baccharis salicifolia is a native riparian plant living in many places near to the Santa Monica Mountains. One of these locations is Legacy park, which has had many events effect it that has led to some very unfortunate changes. The park’s soil was tested earlier this year by a group of undergraduate students lead by Dr. Stephen Davis and was found to have a very high salinity level. The plants in the park appeared to be struggling to survive and had signs of dehydration and wilting. This led to us questioning the types of dehydration of the plants. Areas of …

In the Santa Monica Mountains, there are two main vegetation types: chaparral, which makes up __% of plants in these mountains, and coastal sagebrush, which makes up __%. Despite California’s acute environmental stress, both of these plants manage to survive, and even thrive in some cases. We were interested in seeing if in spite of these vast anatomical and physiological differences, these plants were able to survive at similar health rates, measured in photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and electron transport rate (ETR). We have decided to choose 2 plants from 2 different leaf types of different vegetation types: Malosma laurina …

Acidity at surface of cancer cells is a hallmark of tumor microenvironments, which does not depend on tumor perfusion, thus it may serve as a general biomarker for targeting tumor cells. We used the pH (low) insertion peptide (pHLIP) for decoration of liposomes and niosomes. pHLIP senses pH at the surface of cancer cells and inserts into the membrane of targeted cells, and brings nanomaterial to close proximity of cellular membrane. DMPC liposomes and Tween 20 or Span 20 niosomes with and without pHLIP in their coating were fully characterized in order to obtain fundamental understanding on nanocarrier features and …

Frontoethmoidal Encephalocele Presenting In Concert With Schizencephaly, Asra Tanwir, Syed Sarmad Bukhari, Muhammad Shahzad Shamim Dec 2018

Frontoethmoidal Encephalocele Presenting In Concert With Schizencephaly, Asra Tanwir, Syed Sarmad Bukhari, Muhammad Shahzad Shamim

Section of Neurosurgery

Background: Schizencephaly is a rare defect which is identified as clefts that are lined with grey matter extending from the ependyma of the cerebral ventricles to the pia mater. An encephalocele occurs due to failure of neural tube closure resulting in a gap through which cerebrospinal fluid and meninges can bulge into a pouch. There have been rare instances when these two defects have presented simultaneously.
Case description: We report a case of a 17-year-old child who was brought by his parents with complaint of swelling over his nose and forehead and aggressive behavior since birth. Magnetic resonance imaging findings …

Comparison Of Photosynthesis, Stomatal Conductance, And Water Potential Between Native Rhus Integrifolia And Invasive Nicotiana Glauca, Tiffany J. Egbo, Emma J. Navarro, Malaun A. Phillips, Cameron I. Zohary Dec 2018

Zohary

Featured Research

Invasive species, such as Nicotiana glauca, are a prominent part of the Santa Monica Mountains, and could be responsible for displacing native species such as Rhus integrifolia. It was observed in the field that Nicotiana glauca was doing better than Rhus integrifolia, so our group decided to indirectly test this. Because of the invasiveness of its species, it is essential to measure the health of a native species to see if the invasive species is posing as a massive threat. Water potential, stomatal conductance, fluorescence, photosynthetic rates and electron transport rates were compared among the two plants …

Optimization Of Light Irradiance During The Early Life Of Sexually-Produced Porites Astreoides And Agaricia Agaricites Recruits, Nicholas J. Mcmahon

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Current solutions of coral restoration rely mainly on fragmentation. Though a reliable technique, this asexual form of reproduction does not benefit the genetic diversity of the coral reef. With many global and local stressors threatening corals’ existence, the resiliency of corals to future ocean conditions depends highly on sexual reproduction to produce new genotypes. New technology allows coral spawning/larval release, larval settlement and rearing to be carried out in an aquarium system. Many of the techniques necessary to maintain coral recruits are well-established, however the effects of light intensity remain to be studied for these early life stages. Newly …

Section of Neurosurgery

Introduction: Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are the most common benign neoplasms of a cerebellopontine angle (CPA), which arise from the Schwann cells of the vestibulocochlear nerve. Eighty percent of CPA tumors are VS followed by meningioma as the second common mass lesion in this critical potential space. Treatment options range from watchful waiting with serial imaging studies to radiosurgery or a microsurgical excision or a combination of surgery and radiation therapy. The primary objective of the study was to assess hearing and facial nerve status before and after the surgery via the retrosigmoid approach.
Methods: The database of Aga Khan University …

Attributing Accelerated Increases In Salinity In The Mediterranean Coastal Zone To Climate Change And Seawater Desalination Brine And The Resultant Unsustainability Of Modern Desalination Technology, Brandon W. Harper Dec 2018

Attributing Accelerated Increases In Salinity In The Mediterranean Coastal Zone To Climate Change And Seawater Desalination Brine And The Resultant Unsustainability Of Modern Desalination Technology, Brandon W. Harper

HCNSO Student Capstones

Anthropogenic climate change influences our oceans on a global scale and has brought about increased salinity levels in large areas of our oceans such as the North Atlantic (Dunbar 2009). Concentrations of large scale desalination plants around small bodies of water add to this pattern and have shown even larger increases in salinity due to desalination brine discharge (Purnama et al., 2005). Salinity profile data over time should show similar increases in salinity in the Mediterranean Sea due to climate change and localized data should show increased salinity due to brine discharge. This study aims to pinpoint the extent of …

Evaluating Bad Norms, John Thrasher Dec 2018

Evaluating Bad Norms, John Thrasher

Philosophy Faculty Articles and Research

Some norms are bad. Norms of revenge, female genital mutilation, honor killings, and other norms strike us as destructive, cruel, and wasteful. The puzzle is why so many people see these norms as authoritative and why these norms often resist change. To answer these questions, we need to look at what “bad” norms are and how we can evaluate them. Here I develop an integrative analysis of norms that aims to avoid parochialism in norm evaluation. After examining and rejecting several evaluative standards, I propose what I call a comparative-functional analysis of norms that is both operationalizable/testable and nonparochial, and …

Hiv Virologic Response Better With Single-Tablet Once Daily Regimens Compared To Multiple-Tablet Daily Regimens, Shashi N. Kapadia, Robert R. Grant, Susan B. German, Baljinder Singh, Amy L. Davidow, Shobha Swaminathan, Sally Hodder

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Background: Single-tablet regimens are preferred prescription choices for HIV treatment, but there are limited outcomes data comparing single-tablet regimens to multiple-tablet regimens. Methods: We retrospectively assessed treatment-naïve patients at a single urban HIV clinic in the United States for viral load suppression at 6 and 12months after initiating either single-tablet or multiple-tablet regimens. Multivariate regression was performed to obtain relative risks and adjust for potential confounders. Results: Of 218 patients, 47% were on single-tablet regimens and 53% on multiple-tablet regimens; 77% of single-tablet regimen patients had undetectable viral load at 6months compared to 61% of multiple-tablet regimen patients (p=0.012). At …

Asset Building As Social Investment, Michael Sherraden Dec 2018

Asset Building As Social Investment, Michael Sherraden

Center for Social Development Research

Asset-building policies have been widely adopted since the middle of the 20th century, but most lack features that would make them accessible to all populations—features such as universal at-birth enrollment and progressive incentive structures. Because these policies are not inclusive, they primarily serve the well-off and are highly regressive. In this contribution to Social Investments, Asset Building, and Social Development—the State of the Art: A Special Issue in Honor of James Midgley, Michael Sherraden continued the work of formulating a proposal for a national policy to foster broad economic security by extending the benefits of asset accumulation to all members …
