High Expectations And Teacher Implicit Biases In A Culture Of Care, Jacqueline K. Haynes Dec 2018

High Expectations And Teacher Implicit Biases In A Culture Of Care, Jacqueline K. Haynes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This graduate project was part of a group project completed by five school and district administrators in Hillsborough County, Florida. The project began because of our passion for teachers who are able to establish a culture of care in their classrooms that support students academically but transform their learning through experiences that enable them to be more highly engaged and productive students, regardless of ethnicity, socioeconomic status, perceived academic abilities, and backgrounds.

My project component looked at research on teacher expectations and their effects on student success. Why does the color of a child's skin tone trigger lower expectations by …

Thoughts And Prayers, Chloe Kardasopoulos Dec 2018

Thoughts And Prayers, Chloe Kardasopoulos

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Examining the symbolic Gun against its tangible counterpart illuminates abstract attachments of power and superiority this nation associates with the weapon. These elements loaded in the Gun transform the weapon into an object representative of American identity. Analyzing ideological commitments within the Gun guides a critical response to examine disproportionately increasing national gun violence against stagnant federal gun control. The ongoing gun debate must be analyzed in its entirety, beginning at its source - the Second Amendment. Scholars such as Gary Wills dissect the Second Amendment to extract its contextualized intent from modern writers’ manipulated interpretations. It is not the …

Background — The establishment of trust between researchers and participants is critical to advance HIV and HCV prevention particularly among people who inject drugs (PWID) and other marginalized populations, yet empirical research on how to establish and maintain trust in the course of community health research is lacking. Methods — Qualitative research was nested within a multi-year Social Network and …

If records are not properly appraised may lead to storage congestion, which lead to untidy filing that results in misfiling or no filing at all, resulting in retrieval difficulties or impossible retrieval during healthcare service delivery. In the healthcare institutions, that may lead to patients receiving poor service or no service at all. This study sought to investigate and recommend a framework for medical records appraisal to eventual disposal as a means to ensure support to effective healthcare service delivery in the public …

Green Supply Chain Management: A Perspective On Best Practices In Gscm Design, Leroy Paddock, Natasha Rao Dec 2018

Green Supply Chain Management: A Perspective On Best Practices In Gscm Design, Leroy Paddock, Natasha Rao

Arkansas Law Review

Greening of company supply chains has become almost de rigueur for large, publicly facing companies. One indication of this situation is the fact that 35 of the Fortune 50 companies and at least 58 of the Fortune 100 companies discuss at least some aspects of their green supply chain management (GSCM) activities on their public websites, primarily under the heading of “responsible sourcing.” These GSCM activities ] have the potential to contribute in very important ways to meeting societal sustainability goals, influencing suppliers that are beyond the reach of the national laws of consumer nations, and driving changes in environmental …

Food Sustainability In The Age Of Complex, Global Supply Chains, Steph Tai Dec 2018

Food Sustainability In The Age Of Complex, Global Supply Chains, Steph Tai

Arkansas Law Review

Food production has become more complex over time. Moreover, we are producing food in an increasingly global, rather than local, manner. How can demands for sustainability be reinforced in this age of complex, global supply chains? This essay focuses on three key features of the modern food supply chain: the variety of components, the complexity of the chain itself, and diversity of “enforcement” mechanisms in food production supply chains. These features suggest that traditional governmental tools (such as command and control measures) and contractual tools (such as performance standards) may not be sufficient to ensure sustainable production methods.

Board Rooms And Jail Cells: Assessing Ngo Approaches To Private Environmental Governance, Joshua Ulan Galperin Dec 2018

Board Rooms And Jail Cells: Assessing Ngo Approaches To Private Environmental Governance, Joshua Ulan Galperin

Arkansas Law Review

Although it had been mentioned in other disciplines, the term “private environmental governance” entered the legal literature in 2007. In the first paragraph of the article that imported the term, Professor Michael Vandenbergh wrote, “Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), rather than lobbying national and international governmental bodies to generate public requirements, are using consumer pressure to demand that corporations engage in . . . private regulation.” Thus, from its very beginning, the legal scholarship on private environmental governance has explicitly acknowledged the role of NGOs. As the study of private environmental governance has grown in volume, sophistication, and recognition, the role of …

Mirror, Mirror, On The Wall: Reflections Of A Fat Girl, Lisa P. Spinazola Dec 2018

Mirror, Mirror, On The Wall: Reflections Of A Fat Girl, Lisa P. Spinazola

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This paper shows a day in the life of a woman who sees herself as fat. Her reflection in the mirror is a site of conflict and strife. While she feels accomplished and confident as a teacher, mother and friend, she lacks confidence about her body, which presents a dialectical tension in her sense of self. She writes as a way to understand this dialectic and how she might learn to live a healthier, happier life where she finds balance and is not flagellating herself about her weight. She explores the role food and exercise play in her existence and …

Comedy Makes Me Cry: Seeing Myself In Mediated Disclosures Of Mental Illness, Darren J. Valenta Dec 2018

Comedy Makes Me Cry: Seeing Myself In Mediated Disclosures Of Mental Illness, Darren J. Valenta

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

In this answer to the special call, I layer accounts of my reaction to Bo Burnham’s stand-up comedy special Make Happy with discussions of the stigma surrounding mental health and personal narratives about my own difficulties with anxiety. Dutta argues that “narratives are sites of contestation where cultural meanings are played out through dialogues among cultural participants” (91). He goes on to add that the sharing of narratives reveals the cultural politics involved in models of health and allows for the exploration of new possibilities (Dutta 103). In this light, disclosing struggles with anxiety or other mental illnesses represents a …

Ethnic Identity Formation Among Basque-American Adolescents, Catherine M. Petrissans Dec 2018

Ethnic Identity Formation Among Basque-American Adolescents, Catherine M. Petrissans

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

This article focuses on the ethnic identity formation among one hundred Basque-American youth between the ages of nine and fifteen who were interviewed at the beginning and end of a two week long Udaleku held in Bakersfield California in 2013. This project explores four key questions related to the internal thought processes used by camp attendees to account for or try to make sense of their ethnicity. First, were camp attendees confident or confused about their ethnicity? Second, have participants attempted to “explore” their ethnicity and, if so how? Third, what does “being Basque” mean to camp participants and is …

Sets And Sensibilities: The Excavation Of Ideology In Upstate New York, Christopher P. Barton, Kyle Somerville

Northeast Historical Archaeology

A growing literature on the archaeology of farmsteads and rural domestic sites has examined commodity consumption as the means by which rural families created and maintained social networks and identities. During the nineteenth century, rural areas were increasingly influenced by the practices and values of the urban middle classes, although not every farmstead would, or could, participate in the same way. This paper examines a matching teacup and saucer recovered from the Spring House, a former commercial farmstead and hotel located southeastern Monroe County, Western New York State. The tea set is decorated with transfer print depictions of Faith, Hope, …
