The Effects Of Chronic Sleep Deprivation On Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha And Bone Strength In Menopausal Rats, Noah Barrett, Cameron James, Joshua Tam, Nicole Ellsworth, Dwight Curry, Frank Frisch
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Osteoporosis affects one in four post-menopausal women, and approximately one in three of those women will experience a fracture due to osteoporosis in their lifetime. Sleep deprivation may be a contributing factor in the acceleration of osteoporosis due to the increase in pro-inflammatory cytokine production which may potentiate the diminished estrogen signaling.
Tumor-necrosis factor alpha-type (TNFα), a pro-inflammatory cytokine of interest, stimulates osteoprotegerin ligand (OPGL) to increase the degradation of bone. Bisphosphonates, like Zolendronate, are the most commonly prescribed treatment for osteoporosis because they decrease osteoclastic activity. This study analyzed the effects of chronic sleep deprivation and Zolendronate on TNFα …

Innocent Heart Murmur., Arpan R. Doshi
Innocent Heart Murmur., Arpan R. Doshi
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Heart murmur is the most common reason for a referral to a pediatric cardiologist. Virtually all children have a heart murmur during their childhood. Less than 1% of murmurs are pathological in children. Innocent/functional heart murmur is the most common type of heart murmur. There are multiple theories proposed to identify etiology of innocent heart murmur with varying consensus, but everybody agrees that innocent heart murmur does not carry any morbidity or mortality risk. Even today, heart murmur is associated with high physician uncertainty and parental anxiety. Extensive cardiac evaluation for such a benign finding is also associated with high …
Coarctation Of Aorta In Children., Arpan R. Doshi, Sathish Chikkabyrappa
Coarctation Of Aorta In Children., Arpan R. Doshi, Sathish Chikkabyrappa
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Coarctation of aorta (CoA) is a discrete narrowing in aorta causing obstruction to the flow of blood. It accounts for 6-8% of all congenital heart diseases. With advances in fetal echocardiography rate of prenatal diagnosis of coarctation of aorta has improved but it still remains a challenging diagnosis to make prenatally. Transthoracic echocardiography is mainstay of making initial diagnosis and routine follow-up. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) are great advanced imaging tools for two-dimensional and three-dimensional imaging of aortic arch in complex cases. Based on type of coarctation, size of patient, severity of lesion, and associated …

Structural Characterization Of Feruloylated Arabinoxylan Oligosaccharides Isolated From Rice Bran Fiber, Kan Takahashi
Structural Characterization Of Feruloylated Arabinoxylan Oligosaccharides Isolated From Rice Bran Fiber, Kan Takahashi
Student Theses and Dissertations
Increased consumption of soluble cereal arabinoxylan (AX), and feruloylated arabinoxylan oligosaccharides (FAXOs) generated from it, may promote healthful gastro-intestinal functioning through modulating the gut microbiota and tuning innate immune response function at the gut epithelium. FAXO compositions isolated from rice bran fiber were characterized for their oligosaccharide mass profiles (MALDI-TOF MS) and monosaccharide compositions (GC-FID). Results indicated gluco-oligosaccharides were covalently associated with the FAXOs. I tested the hypothesis that the association represents a novel intermolecular crosslink between mixed linkage β-glucan and AX in rice caryopsis cell walls. The structural characteristics of gluco-oligosaccharides were analyzed to determine glycosidic linkages (GC-MS) and …

Psychophysiology In Relation To Music And Behavior, Chloe Heintz
Honors Theses
This thesis was based off of my experience as a research assistant in a study conducted by principle investigator Edward Roth and student investigator Alycia Sterenberg entitled “The determinants of affect, emotional arousal, and autobiographical memories on music-evoked nostalgia.” Roth and Sterenberg investigated the relationship between nostalgic music, autobiographical memories, and the physiological response of electrodermal activity (EDA). This was done by recruiting 30 college students between the ages of 18-28 to listen to music based off of five songs they listed as being nostalgic to them. They would then rate how familiar, nostalgic, and enjoyable each song was, in …

The Use Of Neurologic Music Therapy And Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation As Treatment For Parkinson’S Disease, Shaima Shebrain
The Use Of Neurologic Music Therapy And Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation As Treatment For Parkinson’S Disease, Shaima Shebrain
Honors Theses
Parkinson’s Disease (PD), a progressive, neurodegenerative disease, is common in people who are 50 years of age or older. It is characterized by the loss of function of the substantia nigra in producing dopamine, a neurotransmitter that allows for smooth and coordinated movement. Due to the lack of dopamine, an individual with PD experiences involuntary and stiff movements such as tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia, postural instability, and abnormal gait patterns along with other motor symptoms. Over the years, the motor symptoms that are associated with PD progressively worsen; thus, limiting the individual’s independency and ability to perform daily tasks. Those with …

Consortium Benefits: Using Tv To Increase Library Consumption, Alicea Peyton
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This experiment was performed to determine if factors exist between increasing the consumption of independent libraries through the use of television; and the consideration of cutting related advertisement expense through the cost-sharing benefit of consortium membership. This paper examines a historical report provided by the American Library Association (1949) on the use of television by public libraries. In conjunction, two other research studies are examined on the subject of 1) consortium membership and benefits, and 2) whether the use of advertisement on cable television has a direct impact in increasing library consumption.

Modeling And Extraction Of Transport Parameters To Simulate Drug Delivery In The Murine Cochlea, Kevin Wilson
Modeling And Extraction Of Transport Parameters To Simulate Drug Delivery In The Murine Cochlea, Kevin Wilson
Theses
The usage of 1D and 3D models to simulate drug transport through the inner ear is a prominent method in cochlear fluid pharmacokinetics. However, the data used to create these models, is often based on invasive sampling methods that limit the spatial resolution given the size of the cochlear compartments within which solute can be measured. In this work by leveraging 3-D registered micro-Computed Tomography (μCT) scans of the murine cochlea that have been taken as iodinated contrast agent is delivered to it, we extract transport parameters and simulate a forward 1D model that allows variable and pulsatile delivery profiles …

Merely viewing objects within reachable space can activate motor cortical networks and potentiate movement. This holds potential value for smooth interaction with objects in our surroundings, and could offer an advantage for quickly generating targeted hand movements (e.g. grasping a support rail to maintain stability). The present study investigated if viewing a wall-mounted safety handle resulted in automatic activation of motor cortical networks, and if this effect changes with age. Twenty-five young adults (18–30 years) and seventeen older adults (65+ years) were included in this study. Single-pulse, transcranial magnetic stimulation was applied over the motor cortical hand representation of young …

Doctoral Dissertations
The transition between IDEA Part C early intervention and Part B 619 preschool special education is one of many transitions experienced by young children with disabilities and their families. Transition is a continuous process, not a discrete event, and Part C service coordinators are charged with facilitating the early intervention transition process for children and families (IDEA, 636. 20 USC § 1436, 2004). An exploratory study was conducted to better understand service coordinator reported practices and child and family transition outcomes using case study research methodology. Eleven participating Part C service coordinators described judgments of their experiences with two families, …
Optimal Selection Of Test Designs And Sensor Sets For Active Fault Diagnosis, Kyle Palmer
Optimal Selection Of Test Designs And Sensor Sets For Active Fault Diagnosis, Kyle Palmer
Doctoral Dissertations
Fault detection and isolation (FDI) is crucial to identifying problems that can occur in complex systems. Many industrial systems require the implementation of model-based FDI to reduce the risk of system failure and increase good performance while minimizing the use of additional hardware. Active FDI has become increasingly popular as it uses auxiliary tests to reduce the impact of uncertainty and improve fault diagnosis. A methodical approach is needed to consistently generate feasible test designs for the optimal detectability and isolability of faults in targeted systems. The focus of this dissertation is to design a general framework that improves the …

Natural products and their derivatives continue to be wellsprings of nascent therapeutic potential. However, many laboratories have limited resources for biological evaluation, leaving their previously isolated or synthesized compounds largely or completely untested. To address this issue, the Canvass library of natural products was assembled, in collaboration with academic and industry researchers, for quantitative high-throughput screening (qHTS) across a diverse set of cell-based and biochemical assays. Characterization of the library in terms of physicochemical properties, structural diversity, and similarity to compounds in publicly available libraries indicates that the Canvass library contains many structural elements in common with approved drugs. The …

P300 Event-Related Potentials To A Phoneme Discrimination Task Requiring A Motor Response, Kaitlyn Chelsea Turner
Theses and Dissertations
Speech perception typically takes place within the auditory cortex as evidenced by data collected using quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG). The purpose of this study was to determine if motor responses influence speech perception. We examined P300 event-related potentials during oddball stimulus recognition tasks that either required or did not require a motor response. Based on a review of the literature, it was hypothesized that similar areas of the brain would be activated in both the motor response task and the same task without a motor response immediately following the button-push condition. Two syllables, /ba/ and /ga/, were presented to 20 native …

Blood hemoglobin level (Hgb) measurement has a vital role in the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of numerous diseases. We describe the use of smartphone video imaging and an artificial neural network (ANN) system to estimate Hgb levels non-invasively. We recorded 10 second-300 frame fingertip videos using a smartphone in 75 adults. Red, green, and blue pixel intensities were estimated for each of 100 area blocks in each frame and the patterns across the 300 frames were described. ANN was then used to develop a model using the extracted video features to predict hemoglobin levels. In our study sample, with patients …

The brain communicates with the spinal cord through numerous axon tracts that arise from discrete nuclei, transmit distinct functions, and often collateralize to facilitate the coordination of descending commands. This complexity presents a major challenge to interpreting functional outcomes from therapies that target supraspinal connectivity after injury or disease, while the wide distribution of supraspinal nuclei complicates the delivery of therapeutics. Here we harness retrograde viral vectors to overcome these challenges. We demonstrate that injection of AAV2-Retro to the cervical spinal cord of adult female mice results in highly efficient transduction of supraspinal populations throughout the brainstem, midbrain, and cortex. …
