Indirect Effects Of Ocean Warming And Acidification On The Realized Recruitment Of Agaricia Agaricites, Allan Anderson Dec 2018

Indirect Effects Of Ocean Warming And Acidification On The Realized Recruitment Of Agaricia Agaricites, Allan Anderson

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Over the past few decades, coral cover has declined worldwide due to overfishing, disease, and storms, and these effects have been exacerbated by ocean warming and acidification. Corals are extremely susceptible to these changes because they are already living close to their thermal and aragonite saturation thresholds. Ocean warming and acidification (OAW) may also impact coral survival and growth by impacting their settlement cues. Coral larvae use crustose coralline algae (CCA) and their associated biofilms as cues for settlement, i.e., habitat selection. Settlement cues can also be negatively affected by increased water temperature and acidity. It was hypothesized that the …

Assessing Participants’ Feedback To Dental Screening Provided By New York City College Of Technology’S Dental Hygiene Students, Dirien Santos, Roseanna M. Torres, Nazrin Akbarova, Susan Davide

Publications and Research

The purpose of this research is to determine if CUNY students, faculty and staff are aware of the Dental Hygiene Program and services located at New York City College of Technology (NYCCT). Dental Hygiene students at NYCCT provide educational, clinical and therapeutic services to the public in accordance with individual state Dental Hygiene practice acts. Prevention and treatment of oral disease are recognized as important factors in a patient's overall health and well-being. Dental hygienists are important members of the dental health care team providing these services. The first phase of the project consisted of a free dental screening event …

Emily Nordberg’s studies at Gardner-Webb University have given her the academic foundation required for graduate school, but equally important is the knowledge she’s gained outside the classroom and as a member of the GWU swim team. “Through relationships with my teammates, my classmates, my professors, and my coaches, I have learned a great deal about myself and how to approach others,” asserted Nordberg, who graduates in 2019. “I have been able to grow as an individual and as a teammate, and it is these lessons that will stay with me after I leave Gardner-Webb.”

As a periodic assessment of the mammal collection resource, the Systematic Collections Committee (SCC) of the American Society of Mammalogists undertakes decadal surveys of the collections held in the Western Hemisphere. The SCC surveyed 429 collections and compiled a directory of 395 active collections containing 5,275,155 catalogued specimens. Over the past decade, 43 collections have been lost or transferred and 38 new or unsurveyed collections were added. Growth in number of total specimens, expansion of genomic resource collections, and substantial gains in digitization and web accessibility were documented, as well as slight shifts in proportional representation of taxonomic groups owing …

Design Synthesis Of Flexible Antennas Using Artificial Neural Network, Ali Isam Hammoodi Dec 2018

Design Synthesis Of Flexible Antennas Using Artificial Neural Network, Ali Isam Hammoodi

Theses and Dissertations

Nowadays, flexible devices have witnessed a great deal of interest in both industrial and academia. Consistently, flexible electronic systems require the integration of a conformal and flexible antenna operating in specific frequency bands to provide wireless connectivity which is highly demanded in today’s information-oriented society. Designing of microstrip antenna has become the focus of modern technologies due to their light weight, ease of fabrication, and ability to integrate electronics devices. Simple structure such has square patch, circular patch, or rectangular patch are easy to maintain using empirical equations which based on some experimental results. However, more complicated structures are hard …

Developing Molecular Methods For Detection Of Blood Meal Sources Of A Free-Living Marine Ectoparasite, Gina Carole Hendrick Dec 2018

Developing Molecular Methods For Detection Of Blood Meal Sources Of A Free-Living Marine Ectoparasite, Gina Carole Hendrick

Student Theses and Dissertations

Gnathiid isopods are one of the most common ectoparasites found in coral reef habitats. Sequencing of host blood meals from wild-caught specimens is a promising tool for addressing the extent to which they feed on available hosts. Challenges must be overcome when samples are subjected to conditions that may contribute to DNA degradation, and efforts to slow DNA degradation during field collection can play an important role in the successful identification of the blood-meal source. Herein, we developed and validated molecular-based host identification methods for a Caribbean gnathiid isopods based on the degradation rate of blood meals. These methods were …

Pharmacy Faculty/Staff Publications

Low-order high-energy nifedipine (NIF) solid dispersions (SDs) were generated by melt solvent amorphization with polyethylene glycol (PEG) 1450 and hypromellose acetate succinate (HPMCAS-HF) to increase NIF solubility while achieving acceptable physical stability. HPMCAS-HF was used as a crystallization inhibitor. Individual formulation components, their physical mixtures (PMs), and SDs were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, powder X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). NIF solubility and percent crystallinity (PC) were determined at the initial time and after 5 days stored at 25 °C and 60% RH. FTIR indicated that hydrogen bonding was involved with the amorphization process. FTIR showed that …

The Kalinago are the Indigenous people of Dominica.Hurricane Maria hit the people particularly hard, losing up to 90% of their homes and community fabric. The people also suffered before the storms. Discrimination, little government aid, no electrical grid, isolation in their mountainous territory, limited social services, and economic mobility. The people have grown up relaying on themselves and their neighbors. With most of the housing stock gone, new building strategies need to be implemented. The goal is to make the territory self-sufficient, and a working expo society about sustainable living and resilience. The territory will undergo a master plan which …

The Interplay Between Early Childhood Education And Mental Health: How Students In An In-Service Early Childhood Teacher Education Program Experience Children With Mental Health And Behavioral Challenges In The Classroom, Katie Statman-Weil Dec 2018

The Interplay Between Early Childhood Education And Mental Health: How Students In An In-Service Early Childhood Teacher Education Program Experience Children With Mental Health And Behavioral Challenges In The Classroom, Katie Statman-Weil

Dissertations and Theses

All early childhood educators who work with children between birth and six years of age are likely to encounter young children who experience behavioral and mental health challenges throughout their careers. Research demonstrates that educators can play a vital role in children's mental health and behavioral development. However, often early childhood educators do not believe they have the knowledge or tools to accurately identify and successfully handle the unique challenges that arise when working with children with behavioral and mental health issues.

Using an Anti-Oppressive Framework, this research study explores, through a qualitative case study design, how students in an …
