Own It: Becoming A Trauma Sensitive School, Oatanisha Dawson Ed.D., Karen Thierry
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
The concepts of poverty, trauma and child development cannot be ignored when reviewing educational outcomes especially in schools where trauma and poverty are prevalent. Glynn County School System (GCSS) has collectively witnessed an overwhelmingly negative impact that poverty has had on early learning. Low income students are highly likely to be traumatized (e.g. witnessing violence at home, polyvictims of abuse, having separated or divorced parents) so they don’t always come to school to learn but, come to school to be loved. Many GCSS schools have students that come from low-income, high-stress home environments. One school in this district, Goodyear Elementary …

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
This year, the Georgia General Assembly passed and the Governor signed HB 763, which requires each county’s Student Attendance Protocol Committee to include reviewing school climate as part of the committee’s responsibilities. This presentation would explain the new aspects of this law and how these committees may be leveraged to advocate for school climate reform and increased behavioral health supports. We will present an example of how a committee has successfully organized to promote school climate change. The strategies and information will empower parents and communities to access these services for their children.

Bioeconomic Consequences Of Fisheries Management: Florida's Commercial Reef Fisheries, Molly H. Stevens
Bioeconomic Consequences Of Fisheries Management: Florida's Commercial Reef Fisheries, Molly H. Stevens
Open Access Dissertations
The Florida reef ecosystem supports lucrative commercial and recreational industries that provide the state with billions of dollars annually. The goal of this study was to analyze the available demographic, fishery, and economic data for reef fishes, develop an age-structured bioeconomic production model, and assess the economic consequences of fisheries management. Key demographics data are required for the most basic assessment methodology, but just over half of these species had full parameter sets suitable for stock assessment, and less than a quarter had reliably estimated sets. Total mortality rates estimated from the average length of the commercial catch were combined …

Hispanic Ethnicity And Poison-Related Outcomes, Florida 2010-2015, Wendy Blair Stephan
Open Access Dissertations
Poisoning is the leading cause of injury death in the United States, with most fatal poisonings resulting from drug overdoses in adults. Much remains unknown about epidemiologic factors at the county level that might affect population risk for poison-related outcomes. Hispanic individuals consistently have lower death and hospitalizations rates from poisoning, so it was hypothesized that having a larger proportion of Hispanic residents, might, in effect, “protect” a county from high rates of poisoning. This ecological, longitudinal study examined Hispanic concentration at the county-level in Florida and the incidence of poison death, nonfatal hospitalizations from poisoning, and calls to poison …

Purpose: The purpose of this Delphi study was to explore social and emotional learning in early childhood instruction with an emphasis on identifying the methods expert early childhood teachers use to support and promote the development of empathy and emotion regulation, to have the teachers rate the impact of these methods, and to identify the specific activities used to implement the six most highly rated methods.
Methodology: This study utilized the Delphi method which is an iterative process used to collect and distill the judgments of experts using a series of questionnaires interspersed with feedback. Fourteen participants recommended strategies to …
Do School Environmental Indicators Impact Student Body Mass Index And Blood Pressure?, Daniella Carucci
Do School Environmental Indicators Impact Student Body Mass Index And Blood Pressure?, Daniella Carucci
Open Access Theses
One third of youth aged 2-19 are overweight or obese, 3.6% of children between the ages of 3 and 18 are found to have stage 1 hypertension, and 3.4% are found to have elevated blood pressure. As children and adolescents spend a majority of their time in school, it is especially important to examine the influence of school contextual factors on body size and blood pressure status. The goal of the present study was to identify how environmental factors, such as school SES, school academic achievement, and school perceived safety influence health status in a sample of ethnically diverse students …

Population Dynamics Of Seagrass Communities In Biscayne Bay, Florida: Exploring The Influence Of Salinity On Seascape Fragmentation, Clinton William Stipek
Open Access Theses
Seagrass communities display complex population dynamics that are presently poorly understood. While most studies of disturbance on seagrass habitats have focused on changes in biomass at small, quadrat-level scales, limited information is available on the impacts of disturbances on seagrass patch dynamics on a broad scale. In this study, a landscape approach based on remote sensing imagery and population modelling were applied to understand seagrass patch dynamics and forecast the fate of these important communities in Biscayne Bay, Miami, Florida, US. The seagrass communities of Biscayne Bay are especially influenced by the modifications of the Everglades watershed that has significantly …
Alienation, And Its Antidote: Geographical Estrangement In The Modern Moment, Anna Nissley
Alienation, And Its Antidote: Geographical Estrangement In The Modern Moment, Anna Nissley
English Department: Traveling American Modernism (ENG 366, Fall 2018)
The modern American moment has been marked by geographic estrangement: the alienation of human populations from their surrounding physical environments. This paper explores the modern phenomenon of geographic alienation by situating it within a specific historical frame, beginning with American Manifest Destiny in the mid-1800s and ending in the second half of the twentieth century, drawing connections between sociopolitical movements and their aftereffects. Identifying examples of alienation between humans and their environments through analysis of texts Black Elk Speaks and Blue Highways, as well as other cultural artifacts, this work gestures toward ways of reconciling past wrongs and offers solutions …

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications
Agricultural water management (AWM) is an interdisciplinary concern, cutting across traditional domains such as agronomy, climatology, geology, economics, and sociology. Each of these disciplines has developed numerous process-based and empirical models for AWM. However, models that simulate all major hydrologic, water quality, and crop growth processes in agricultural systems are still lacking. As computers become more powerful, more researchers are choosing to integrate existing models to account for these major processes rather than building new cross-disciplinary models. Model integration carries the hope that, as in a real system, the sum of the model will be greater than the parts. However, …

Assessment Of Dietary Patterns, Physical Activity And Obesity From A National Survey: Rural-Urban Health Disparities In Older Adults, Steven A. Cohen, Mary L. Greaney, Natalie J. Sabik
Public Health Faculty Publications
Background
Obesity is a critical public health issue, affecting over one-third of all Americans, and is an underlying cause of numerous health issues across the lifespan. For older adults, obesity is linked to premature declines in physical and mental health and cognitive functioning. The occurrence of obesity and related health behaviors and chronic diseases are higher in rural areas than in urban areas. Furthermore, rural areas of the United States have a higher proportion of older adults than urban areas. Few studies, to date, have explored rural-urban differences in the relationships between dietary patterns and obesity among older adults. Therefore, …

Dose–Response Functions And Methodological Insights For Sensory Tests With Astringent Stimuli, Jonathan Kershaw, Cordelia Running
Dose–Response Functions And Methodological Insights For Sensory Tests With Astringent Stimuli, Jonathan Kershaw, Cordelia Running
Public and Allied Health Faculty Publications
Sensations such as bitterness and astringency can limit the acceptance of many purportedly healthy foods. The purpose of this study was to investigate dose–response relationships of various astringent and bitter stimuli in a beverage, and to simultaneously gain additional methodological insight for the effects of wording, repeated tasting, and beverage matrix on these sensations. Untrained participants were presented with samples of a “flavored beverage” or water containing various concentrations of four stimuli (alum, malic acid, tannic acid, and quinine) and were asked to rate intensities of tastes (bitterness, sourness, and sweetness) and astringency subqualities (roughing, drying, and constricting or puckering) …

Drowning Prevention: Define And Then Gather Evidence Or Gather Evidence To Define?, Nina J. Nyitrai, Suzi Edwards, Nicholas O'Dwyer
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
According to the World Health Organization, drowning fatalities are a neglected public health issue ranked as the third most frequent cause of unintentional death by injury. Data used to record drowning incidents are acknowledged as inaccurate. Recommendations on drowning prevention based on these data are currently not informed by accurate, detailed and reliable evidence. Two modifications to current practice are proposed: 1) an Aquatic Incident Report needs to be developed as an extension of the current workplace incident report to prompt for information commonly not included in current drowning reports; and 2) National Water Safety Plans should be modified to …

BRD4 assembles transcriptional machinery at gene super-enhancer regions and governs the expression of genes that are critical for cancer progression. However, it remains unclear whether BRD4-mediated gene transcription is required for tumor cells to develop drug resistance. Our data show that prolonged treatment of luminal breast cancer cells with AKT inhibitors induces FOXO3a dephosphorylation, nuclear translocation, and disrupts its association with SirT6, eventually leading to FOXO3a acetylation as well as BRD4 recognition. Acetylated FOXO3a recognizes the BD2 domain of BRD4, recruits the BRD4/RNAPII complex to the CDK6 gene promoter, and induces its transcription. Pharmacological inhibition of either BRD4/FOXO3a association or …
