The Influence Of Predisposing, Enabling And Reinforcing Factors On The Solid Waste Management System. A Case Study On Kampala And Nairobi., Bethel Mwenze
Honors Theses
This study is a literature review on available research on the solid waste management issues that are overwhelming the cities of Kampala and Nairobi. The populations of these cities are growing as these cities attempt to fast track development in their cities. With this, means a multitude of issues that are too overwhelming for the current infrastructure. If these issues are not properly dealt with environmental and health problems are sure to ensue This study distributes these issues on the individuals, workers and policy makers in reference to their responsibilities. So, one can understand the predisposing factors such as knowledge …

Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works
This research examines the ways in which children of impoverished families and communities are put at a disadvantage due to the the correlation between poverty and social exclusion, analyzing several African-American children who grew up below the poverty line. Social exclusion in poor communities and neighborhoods is so hindering to a person’s development that they are not able to improve their life circumstances and raise themselves out of poverty. The second part of the research looks at the history of racial inequality in film as well as the marginalization of women of color in the entertainment industry today. Viola Davis, …

Background: In mTNBC, anti-PD-1/L1 monotherapy is most effective when administered early in the course of disease, with recent trials demonstrating overall response rates (ORR) of 23-26% in the first-line setting and 5-6% in later lines. This may reflect iatrogenic lymphopenia from preceding cytotoxic chemotherapy. Furthermore, curative-intent chemotherapy is associated with prolonged suppression of naïve CD4+ cells, a T-cell subset that may play a critical role in the generation of de novo anti-tumor immune responses. We present the final clinical results of a pilot study evaluating the safety and efficacy of combining pembrolizumab plus standard-of-care capecitabine in the first/second-line mTNBC …

Background: Cytokines are being explored as a therapeutic strategy to modulate the tumor microenvironment and facilitate immunotherapy benefit in breast cancer. Here, we investigate a locoregional therapeutic approach whereby cytokines (IRX-2) are administered into the subcutaneous peri-areolar tissue (in an anatomic distribution similar to sentinel lymph node mapping) to facilitate immune cell recruitment/activation within the draining lymph nodes and tumor in ESBC. IRX-2 is derived from ex vivo phytohemagglutinin-stimulated lymphocytes and contains multiple cytokines including IL-1β, IL-2, TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-6, IL-8, and GM-CSF, with stable concentrations from lot to lot. Preclinically, IRX-2 activates T-cells and natural killer (NK) cells, facilitates …

A Comparison Of Maternal And Newborn Health Services Costs In Sindh Pakistan, Asif Raza Khowaja, Craig Mitton, Rahat Qureshi, Stirling Bryan, Laura A. Magee, Peter Von Dadelszen, Zulfiqar A. Bhutta
Department of Paediatrics and Child Health
Pakistani women suffer the highest rate of maternal mortality in South Asia. A lack of comprehensive knowledge about maternal and newborn health (MNH) services costs impedes policy decisions to maximize the benefit from existing, as well as emerging, MNH interventions in Pakistan. We compared MNH service costs at different levels of care. A cross-sectional survey was conducted during January to March 2016 as part of a large economic evaluation in Sindh, Pakistan. Health providers and facilities were selected from a sampling frame, inclusive of public and private sectors. This study utilized a broad perspective (i.e. costs to the health system …

Proper temporal and spatial activation of stem cells relies on highly coordinated cell signaling. The primary cilium is the sensory organelle that is responsible for transmitting extracellular signals into a cell. Primary cilium size, architecture, and assembly-disassembly dynamics are under rigid cell cycle-dependent control. Using mouse incisor tooth epithelia as a model, we show that ciliary dynamics in stem cells require the proper functions of a cholesterol-binding membrane glycoprotein, Prominin-1 (Prom1/CD133), which controls sequential recruitment of ciliary membrane components, histone deacetylase, and transcription factors. Nuclear translocation of Prom1 and these molecules is particularly evident in transit amplifying cells, the immediate …

State V. Second Judicial Dist. Court. (Hearn (Matthew)), 134 Nev. Adv. Op. 96 (Dec. 6, 2018) (En Banc), Taylor Buono
Nevada Supreme Court Summaries
The Court affirmed the district court’s decision and held that the prosecutorial consent provision in NRS 176A.290 violated the Nevada Constitution’s separation of powers doctrine. Furthermore, the Court struck the offending language, finding that the provision could be severed from the statute without impacting the legislature’s intent.
Addressing Gun Violence In The United States, Sarah House
Addressing Gun Violence In The United States, Sarah House
Gettysburg Social Sciences Review
When compared with other high-income countries, gun violence is clearly a problem in the United States. Although homicide appears to be a more serious issue compared with other countries, suicide causes many more deaths per year than homicide does and therefore deserves at least as much attention. Discussion of gun policy has also focused heavily on mental illness, and although this is a potential factor in gun violence, we must also recognize that most people with mental illness are not dangerous. Other factors that contribute to risk of gun fatalities include social environment and access to guns, which are important …
Latina Women In Adams County, Pennsylvania: Access To Mental Health Care For Depression, Alison Lauro
Latina Women In Adams County, Pennsylvania: Access To Mental Health Care For Depression, Alison Lauro
Gettysburg Social Sciences Review
Depression has been identified as major health concern for adults in Adams County. Latinos makeup 6.5% of the population in the county and 13% in Gettysburg, yet Latina women often go undiagnosed or untreated. I created and distributed a survey to Latina women in order to understand what barriers prevent them from accessing mental health services in Adams County. The survey results show that women living in poverty, immigrant women, and undocumented women face greater challenges to accessing mental health because of a lack of health insurance, limited transportation, and language barriers. The Latino Services Task Force of Adams County …

This session is intended for participants supporting or implementing PBIS within schools tha want to gain more knowledge about developing stronger teams. Implementing and sustaining PBIS happens through the guidance and actions of a strong, effective leadership team. All members of the PBIS Leadership Team must clearly understand their roles and responsibilities so they can be active supporters, implementers, and leaders of the PBIS framework in their schools. Research discusses the importance of understanding team dynamics and the purpose of the team, which makes people mutually accountable about working toward a common goal. Team dynamics are created by the nature …

Special Education In Juvenile Residential Facilities: Can Animals Help?, Sally E. Thigpen, Stephanie K. Ellis, Rebecca G. Smith
Essays in Education
Children with emotional/behavioral disorders (EBD) are arguably one of the highest at-risk groups for dropping out before graduating high school. They are the group of students with disabilities who are most likely to be educated in residential facilities. Residential facilities such as Green Chimneys have incorporated animals into the treatment milieu with success. Animals have been used in various settings to improve the quality of life as well as the emotional and physical needs of people served by these facilities. This article describes the requirements for using animals in residential treatment, the limitations of such programs, and the research findings …
