Introduction: Burnout among Registered Nurses has been a great concern within the U.S. healthcare system and has been reported in many hospitals. Nurse Burnout has been defined as a chronic response to work-related stress comprising three components or dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. The purpose of this research was to analyze the nurse-to-patient ratio to determine how it affects the psychological, mental, emotional health and the nurse overall productivity in the workplace.
Methodology: The methodology was a review of literatures and a semi-structured interview. There were four primary databases and one website used in this research, and 31 …

Aging And The Perception Of Coherent Motion, Lindsey Marie Shain
Aging And The Perception Of Coherent Motion, Lindsey Marie Shain
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The aperture problem describes an effect by which a contoured stimulus, moving behind an aperture with both ends occluded, appears to move in a direction perpendicular to its own orientation. Mechanisms within the human visual system allow us to overcome this problem and integrate many of these locally ambiguous signals into the perception of globally coherent motion. In the current experiment, younger and older observers viewed displays composed of either 64 or 9 straight contours, arranged in varying orientations and moving behind circular apertures. Because these lines moved behind apertures, their individual local motions were ambiguous with respect to direction …

The Effects Of Bingocize® On Cognitive Aging: A Health Promotion Intervention, Rilee Pauline Mathews
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Previous research has suggested that physical exercise can play a role in not only improving functional performance, but also cognitive function. In this study, adults age 60 and older participated in a health promotion intervention that included two groups: (a) a Bingocize® group, who exercised and learned about relevant health information while playing bingo, and (b) a control group who only learned about relevant health information while playing bingo. The intervention was completed over the course of 10- weeks at community senior centers. Cognitive function, functional fitness, and health knowledge were assessed before and after the intervention to test for …

Cambodian genocide survivors experience health disparities associated with their traumatic experiences. Cambodian community organizations in the United States are severely challenged to serve these survivors. Community leaders have identified a sub-set of community members of particular concern: those at either end of the age spectrum (elders and young people) who are socially isolated. As part of a larger community-based participatory research project, we conducted a focus group with seven Cambodian community leaders from six cities that sought to better understand the phenomenon of social isolation of Cambodian elders and young people in order to inform health promotion efforts. Cambodian leaders …

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major cause of healthcare-associated infections and resistance among isolates is an increasing burden. The study purpose was to describe national resistance rates for clinical P. aeruginosa respiratory and bloodstream cultures and the prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) P. aeruginosa within the Veterans Affairs (VA). MDR was defined as non-susceptibility to at least one drug in at least 3 of the following 5 categories: carbapenems, extended-spectrum cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, and piperacillin/tazobactam. We reviewed 24,562 P. aeruginosa respiratory and bloodstream isolates across 126 VA facilities between 2009 to 2013. Most isolates were collected from inpatient settings (82%). Resistance was highest …

Unimanual And Bimanual Haptic Shape Discrimination, Catherine Jane Dowell
Unimanual And Bimanual Haptic Shape Discrimination, Catherine Jane Dowell
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In the current study 24 younger adults and 24 older adults haptically discriminated natural 3-D shapes (bell peppers, Capsicum annuum) using unimanual (one hand used to explore two objects) and bimanual (both hands used, but each hand explored separate objects) successive exploration. Haptic exploration using just one hand requires somatosensory processing in only one cerebral hemisphere (the hemisphere contralateral to the hand being used), while bimanual haptic exploration requires somatosensory processing in both hemispheres. Previous studies related to curvature/shape perception have found either an advantage for unimanual exploration over bimanual exploration or no difference between the two conditions. In contrast …

Introduction: Several studies have been reported that age-related cognitive decline. One factor that might attenuated age-related cognitive declined is cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) which is abilities to perform physical activity. Further, Structural and functional changes in human brain are related to CRF. However, little is known regarding the differences between older adults with and without cognitive impairment in CRF.
Methods: A cross sectional study was designed. One hundred fifty-six older adults both males and females aged > 60 years olds were asked to complete the Thai mini mental state examination (Thai- MMSE) which is cognitive impairment screening test. Seventy-eight Thai healthy older …

Sport Motivation Of Senior Athletes, Jenna Mammenga
Sport Motivation Of Senior Athletes, Jenna Mammenga
Honors Thesis
The population of older adults is rapidly growing in the United States, though many of these individuals do not meet the Center for Disease Control recommended activity and exercise recommendations. A select group however, senior athletes, appear to be to active and, in fact, surpass these recommendations with their activity level. The motivation of this unique population of actively aging adults has not been carefully studied. The purpose of this study was to better understand the motivating factors of older adults who participate in competitive sports and to further investigate how motivation may be impacted by age, gender, marital status, …
Nursing Student Perceptions Of Study Abroad, Emma Branch
Nursing Student Perceptions Of Study Abroad, Emma Branch
Honors Projects
Following the author's own study abroad in Cusco, Peru in May 2017, a literature review was conducted on nursing students who studied abroad and its effect on their ability to provide culturally competent care. Based on that review, the author created a standardized survey tool to be used on other nursing students who study abroad. This tool includes pre-travel and post-travel questions. It collects demographic data, data on the logistics of the trip, and open-ended questions about the experience. The tool was distributed to the GVSU nursing students who went to Ghana, Africa in March 2018. The data from that …

Evaluating Transfer Of Continuing Education To Practice: A Retrospective Mixed-Methods Study, Tiffany Bryant, Dnp, Msn, Rn-Bc
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Continuing education (CE) is an essential component of building and maintaining the competence and performance of health professionals. Evidence of its impact on practice is lacking. Organizations need evidence of CE transfer to the practice setting to demonstrate its value and inform CE practice.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to provide evidence of CE’s impact on practice by analyzing nurses’ reports of intent to change practice, actual practice change, and examples of practice change. Research assessing the effects of CE on nursing practice across multiple courses involving different topics, levels of nursing practice and location supports generalizability. …

Background: Approximately 1.66 million Americans are diagnosed with cancer each year and another 589,430 die from the disease. As treatment options have expanded, many cancer patients are living longer with worsening symptoms and disabilities and an increased illness burden. These patients are ideal candidates for palliative care. Palliative care involves care delivered by a team of clinicians with specialty training and a focus on improving the quality of life for patients with serious illnesses. A number of major organizations have made formal recommendations regarding the integration of palliative care into comprehensive cancer care including the American Society of Clinical Oncology …
Living Apart Together As A “Family Form” Among Persons Of Retirement Age: The Appropriate Family Law Response, Cynthia Grant Bowman
Living Apart Together As A “Family Form” Among Persons Of Retirement Age: The Appropriate Family Law Response, Cynthia Grant Bowman
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
As the Baby Boom generation enters retirement age, patterns of living among older persons are beginning to change. Unlike their predecessors, the Baby Boomers lived through the sexual revolution, divorced more easily and more often, and institutionalized new patterns of coupling, such as cohabitation. As a result, the rate of marriage has declined and the percent of the population classified as “single” has gone up. This age cohort has now moved into the sixty-five-plus group and makes up those we think of as the retirement generation, or the “Third Age” group. As longevity has increased and the divorce rate for …

Disabled And Out? Social Interaction Barriers And Mental Health Among Older Adults With Physical Disabilities, Raeda Anderson
Disabled And Out? Social Interaction Barriers And Mental Health Among Older Adults With Physical Disabilities, Raeda Anderson
Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Over one-third of older adults in the U.S. are physically disabled. Having a disability is a chronic stressor for older adults, and this chronic stress significantly compromises mental health. Because disablement likely restricts older adults' ability to engage in interpersonal interactions, the link between physical disability and mental health may reflect consequences of such unmet social needs. Social interactions are associated with better mental health, yet prior work on social context of disablement focuses on the quality of social relations or perceptions of support, not on actual access to social interactions. There remains a need to understand how and why …
Assessment For Mild Cognitive Impairment: Striving For Best Practice, Julie Leigh Dalmasso
Assessment For Mild Cognitive Impairment: Striving For Best Practice, Julie Leigh Dalmasso
Dissertations
This dissertation is a series of three studies aimed at determining the best assessment practices for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) that can employed by speech-language pathologists (SLPs). The first study was non-experimental and descriptive examining whether three commonly used assessment instruments yielded similar categorical results. The data were analyzed to determine whether the Eight-Item Interview to Differentiate Aging and Dementia (AD8), the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and the Cognitive-Linguistic Quick Test (CLQT) identified the same participants from a neurotypical sample as having cognitive deficits. Very little agreement was found amongst the three tools.
Study two was modified to include two …
The Effects Of Anxiety Induction On Olfactory Function In Healthy Young Adults, Lauren T. Olson
The Effects Of Anxiety Induction On Olfactory Function In Healthy Young Adults, Lauren T. Olson
Honors Theses
There is significant overlap in the neural structures involved in the human limbic (emotion) and olfactory systems, and prior research findings have suggested both positive and negative associations between anxiety and odor detection sensitivity (threshold), odor identification accuracy, and odor hedonic ratings (Havlicek et al., 2012; Krusemark et al., 2013). However, knowledge about whether anxiety causes changes in olfactory perception remains unclear due to limited research findings. The present study aimed to extend the literature on olfaction and state anxiety by investing the impact of an anxiety induction on odor detection sensitivity, odor identification accuracy, and odor hedonic ratings. It …

Do Normative And Pathological Personality Traits Overlap? Exploratory And Confirmatory Factor Analyses Of The Neo-Pi-3 And Pid-5, Lisa Eileen Stone
Honors Theses
Historically, personality disorders have been conceptualized as qualitatively distinct clinical syndromes, based on operational criteria. Consistent with this model, ten distinct set personality disorder criteria are outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). However, debate persists about the clinical utility of this categorical model, with many (Krueger, et al.) researchers supporting a dimensional model that focuses on pathological levels of normative personality traits.
An exploratory factor analysis (De Fruyt et al., 2013) of the NEO Personality Inventory-3 (NEOPI-3; Costa & McCrae, 2010) and The Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5; Krueger, Derringer, …
