Trends In Self‐Reported Oral Health Of Us Adults: National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey 1999‐2014, Kar Yan Li, Christopher Okunseri, Colman Mcgrath, May C.M. Wong
School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications
Objective
Single‐item self‐reported oral health (SROH) is a convenient and reliable measure for the assessment of population‐based oral health. However, little is known about trends and its associations among US adults. This study investigated trends in SROH (aged 20+ years) and the associated factors among adults living in the United States.
Methods
Self‐reported oral health data for 41 621 adults aged 20+ years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999 to 2014 were analysed. Survey‐weighted descriptive statistics were computed to provide nationally representative estimates. Multivariable logistic regression was performed separately for each survey period with SROH as …

“Their Today Is Our Future”: Direct Carers’ Work Experience And Formal Caring Relationships In A Community-Based Eldercare Program In Shanghai, Lin Chen, Minzhi Ye, Eva Kahana
School of Social Work Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study is to explore direct carers’ work experience and formal caring relationships with older adults in a community-based eldercare program in Shanghai. Existing evidence has primarily focused on direct carers’ work experience in residential care settings. However, direct carers’ experiences of caring older adults in the community also deserve exploration. This qualitative study purposively sampled direct carers who worked in government-sponsored programs. Carers participated in semi-structured, in-depth interviews (N = 37). Results reveal that despite occasional frustration, direct carers undertook demanding workloads and fostered strong emotional attachments with older adult clients. “Karma” was a critical …

Real World, Large Scale Iot Systems For Community Eldercare: Experiences And Lessons Learned, Alvin Cerdena Valera, Wei Qi Lee, Hwee-Pink Tan, Hwee Xian Tan, Huiguang Liang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The paradigm of aging-in-place - where the elderly live and age in their own homes, independently and safely, with care provided by the community - is compelling, especially in societies that face both shortages in institutionalized eldercare resources, and rapidly-aging populations. When the number of elderly who live alone rises rapidly, support and care from their communities become increasingly critical. Internet-of-Things(IoT) technologies, particularly in-home monitoring solutions, are becoming mature. They can become the fundamental enabler for smart community eldercare. In this chapter, we share our real-world experiencesgleaned from an ongoing large-scale project on IoT-enabled community eldercare. We identify technology-centric challenges …

Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications
Background
Arthritis is a leading cause of chronic pain and functional limitations. Exercise is beneficial for improving strength and function and decreasing pain. We evaluated the effect of a motivational interviewing-based lifestyle physical activity intervention on self-reported physical function in adults with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) or rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Methods
Participants were randomized to intervention or control. Control participants received a brief physician recommendation to increase physical activity to meet national guidelines. Intervention participants received the same brief baseline physician recommendation in addition to motivational interviewing sessions at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months. These sessions focused on facilitating individualized …

Evidence-Driven Diagnosis And Treatment Of Acute Urinary Tract Infections In Long-Term Care, Morgan K. Clouse
Evidence-Driven Diagnosis And Treatment Of Acute Urinary Tract Infections In Long-Term Care, Morgan K. Clouse
DNP Projects
Misdiagnosis of asymptomatic bacteriuria as a urinary tract infection continues to occur, leading to the overuse of antibiotics. Due to the growing elderly population in long-term care facilities (LTCFs), LTCFs can play a critical role in antimicrobial stewardship. Urinary tract infections are a starting point for moving toward antimicrobial stewardship, since urinary tract infections are common in LTCFs. A retrospective chart review of 156 cases with suspected urinary tract infections (UTIs) was completed in a LTCF. The purpose of the scholarly project was to assess diagnostic and treatment practices for UTIs and compare them to a diagnostic and treatment algorithm. …
