The Effects Of Features Of Survey Measurement On Self-Rated Health: Response Option Order And Scale Orientation, Dana Garbarski, Nora Cate Schaeffer, Jennifer Dykema
The Effects Of Features Of Survey Measurement On Self-Rated Health: Response Option Order And Scale Orientation, Dana Garbarski, Nora Cate Schaeffer, Jennifer Dykema
Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Self-rated health (SRH) is widely used to study health across a range of disciplines. However, relatively little research examines how features of its measurement in surveys influence respondents’ answers and the overall quality of the resulting measurement. Manipulations of response option order and scale orientation are particularly relevant to assess for SRH given the increasing prominence of web-based survey data collection and since these factors are often outside of the control of the researcher who is analyzing data collected by other investigators. We examine how the interplay of two features of SRH influence respondents’ answers in a 2-by-3 factorial experiment …

The Impact Of Blood Pressure Dipping Status On Cognition, Mobility And Cardiovascular Health In Older Adults Following An Exercise Program, Narlon Cassio Boa Sorte Silva, Michael A. Greagory, Dawn P. Gill, Cheri L. Mcgowan, Robert Petrella
Lifestyle Research Team
Objectives: To determine whether a dual-task gait and aerobic exercise intervention differentially impacted older adults with normal blood pressure (BP) dipping status (dippers) compared to those with nondipping status (nondippers).
Methods: This study was a secondary analysis involving participants (mean age = 70.3 years, 61% women) who attended a laboratory-based exercise intervention over a 6-month period (40 min/day and 3 days/week). Participants were assessed in measures of cognition, mobility, and cardiovascular health at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months (after a 6-month no-contact follow-up).
Results: We observed improvements in cognition in both groups at 6 and 12 months, although no …

Alzheimer's Disease And The Impact Of Music Therapy: A Systematic Literature Review, Hayley Guess
Alzheimer's Disease And The Impact Of Music Therapy: A Systematic Literature Review, Hayley Guess
James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)
Although a cure for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has yet to be discovered, several non-pharmacological treatments can improve patients’ quality of life and provide temporary relief from the disabling symptoms. One of these treatments is music therapy. This systematic literature review evaluates the existing research on the relationship between Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and music therapy, with a narrowed focus on familiar music therapy, the potential mechanisms of action that explain the efficacy of this intervention, and the resulting nursing implications that may be utilized in practice. A search of the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) database returned …

Developing A Broader Understanding Of Subjective Age: A Mixed Methods Investigation, Gretchen A. Petery
Doctoral Dissertations
Subjective age (SA), a self-construal of age often measured by asking how old a person feels (e.g., felt age, FA), has been proposed as an alternative to chronological age (CA) in organizational research. Indeed, prior research reveals that SA has predictive abilities above and beyond CA on work relevant outcomes such as stress, retirement intentions, and health. Younger adults tend to report feeling older than their CA; this switches to feeling younger than CA sometime around mid- to late-twenties, although there is considerable variability in the size and direction of FA-CA differences at all ages. Yet, relatively little is known …
Remembering Sophia Jane, Sarah A. Canterbury
Remembering Sophia Jane, Sarah A. Canterbury
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
Remembering Sophia Jane braids personal narratives and research on the nature of Alzheimer’s, memory, and the role of memory in creative nonfiction, together with personal reflection and active scene. It explores common aspects of the reality of Alzheimer’s as well as the reality facing caregivers. The combination of scene, research, and description work to fill a sort of gap in the genre of the Illness Memoir by reflecting and exploring what the role and authority memory has in storytelling as a whole, and specifically the role in nonfiction work. By redefining the boundaries of Alzheimer’s narratives, illness memoirs, and the …

Management of immunity is crucial for survival in all living organisms. While there is a large amount of research for established model organisms, such as the mouse model, much less is known about reptiles. When compared to immunity in mammals, we discover many differences such as susceptibility to certain pathogens, alteration of immune processes due to environmental temperature, the total absence of certain lymphoid organs contained in mammals, among many others. Despite this, the reptile has shown in many studies that they are worthy systems to study immunity in an evolutionary perspective and recent studies may show that they may …

Purpose: Performance on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), among the most widely used global screens of adult cognitive status, is affected by demographic variables including age, education, and ethnicity. This study extends prior research by examining the specific effects of bilingualism on MMSE performance.
Method: Sixty independent community-dwelling monolingual and bilingual adults were recruited from Eastern and Western regions of the United States in this cross-sectional group study. Independent sample t-tests were used to compare two bilingual groups (Spanish-English and Asian Indian-English) with matched monolingual speakers on the MMSE, demographically adjusted MMSE scores, MMSE item scores, and a nonverbal cognitive …
Individualized Music Improves Social Interaction Of Women, But Not Men, With Dementia, Emily Farrer, Diana Hilycord
Individualized Music Improves Social Interaction Of Women, But Not Men, With Dementia, Emily Farrer, Diana Hilycord
Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research
Dementia is tragic both for patients with the disease and for their family members. As this neurodegenerative disorder progresses, cognitive functions deteriorate, agitation and aggression increase, and mood worsens (McDermott, Orrell, et al., 2014; Spiro, 2010; Vasionyté & Madison, 2013). Non-pharmacological approaches, such as active music therapy or passive music listening, can be effective in reducing these symptoms. However, no past studies have examined how music listening affects the social interactions of patients with dementia. As such, this study examined whether nursing home residents with dementia are more engaged and interactive if they listen to individually selected music for 15 …

Home Health Nurse Decision-Making Regarding Visit Intensity Planning For Newly Admitted Patients: A Qualitative Descriptive Study, Elliane Irani
Home Health Nurse Decision-Making Regarding Visit Intensity Planning For Newly Admitted Patients: A Qualitative Descriptive Study, Elliane Irani
Faculty Scholarship
Despite patients referred to home health having diverse and complex needs, it is unknown how nurses develop personalized visit plans. In this qualitative descriptive study, we interviewed 26 nurses from three agencies about their decision-making process to determine visit intensity and analyzed data using directed content analysis. Following a multifactorial assessment of the patient, nurses relied on their experience and their agency’s protocols to develop the personalized visit plan. They revised the plan based on changes in the patient’s clinical condition, engagement, and caregiver availability. Findings suggest strategies to improve visit planning and positively influence outcomes of home health patients.
Job Termination Survey: Faith Community Nursing, Deborah Ziebarth
Job Termination Survey: Faith Community Nursing, Deborah Ziebarth
International Journal of Faith Community Nursing
Research regarding community-based nurse voluntary and involuntary termination rates are limited and outdated. This study explores faith community nursing termination using a survey. Survey questions pertaining to why the termination occurred, supportive resources used during termination, and post termination behaviors are addressed. The first three reasons for termination were due to site leadership change, not a strategic priority of the hospital or faith community leadership, and organization restructuring or elimination of the program. The fourth through seventh reasons for termination were financial in nature. They were: not a financial priority to hospital or health care organization, not a financial priority …

Background
The Community Healthy Activities Model Program for Seniors (CHAMPS) survey, summarized into weekly caloric expenditures, is a common physical activity (PA) assessment tool among older adults. Specific types of PA reported in the CHAMPS have not been systematically analyzed. We applied latent class analysis to identify the patterns of PA among sedentary older adults with diabetes reported in the CHAMPS survey.
Methods
Latent class models of PA were identified using the CHAMPS survey data reported by 115 individuals aged ≥60 years with type 2 diabetes whom volunteered for a clinical study of PA. Multinomial logistic regression was used to …
Ankle Kinetics And Plantarflexor Morphology In Older Runners With Different Lifetime Running Exposures, Ramzi Muhannad Majaj
Ankle Kinetics And Plantarflexor Morphology In Older Runners With Different Lifetime Running Exposures, Ramzi Muhannad Majaj
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Aging is associated with a decline in physical function, cardiovascular health and quality of life. Running promotes better cardiovascular health and has positive effects on the musculoskeletal system in older adults. However, older adults have lower ankle moments and positive powers during running, and exhibit changes in plantarflexor morphology than young adults. These age-related changes contribute to slower running speeds and reduced movement intensity that could influence cardiovascular health. Since older runners who run as much as younger runners exhibit youthful ankle mechanical outputs, running exposure may preserve the locomotor factors that mediate movement speed. The purpose of this study …

The Influence Of Preceptor Training On Nurse Satisfaction And Role Confidence, Beth Marquez
The Influence Of Preceptor Training On Nurse Satisfaction And Role Confidence, Beth Marquez
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
By 2020, half a million nurses will retire, resulting in a significant loss in nursing expertise (Cazier & Spaulding, 2014). Retention of existing nursing staff is critical to the financial and operational sustainability of healthcare systems. Increased turnover is a catalyst to a rise in sentinel events. A key factor impacting retention is nurse satisfaction, which is directly impacted by the culture of the organization. The relationship between a nurse and their preceptor can be a dynamic component in job satisfaction and retention. To preserve satisfaction among nursing staff, a
sense of belonging and engagement with the culture of the …

Tourism has potential to diversify Mongolia’s geopolitically challenged economy. Tourism development and promotion has increased since 1990, and there is reason to expect continued sector growth. Cultural tourism has potential to commodify or degrade cultural resources (Gilbert, 2006, Pigliasco, 2010, Soma & Suhkee, 2014) and alter the physical landscape and identity of local people (Chang & Yeoh, 1999, Seng, 2005, Phua & Berkowitz, 2014). As tourism in Mongolia increases, its effects on cultural resources should be understood. This study of Mongolian tourism interviews fifteen tour company employees to understand how Mongolian culture is perceived and used from a business perspective. …
