The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections

Introduction: Influenza vaccination is the primary strategy for prevention of influenza infection. Influenza infection can vary from mild or even asymptomatic illness to severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Although many national and international investigators and organizations report annual estimates of influenza vaccine effectiveness for prevention of influenza infection in the community, few studies report estimates for the prevention of hospitalizations due to influenza CAP, the most severe form of the infection. The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the influenza vaccine for prevention of hospitalization in patients with influenza-associated CAP.

Methods: This was a test-negative study using …

Intersecting Stories: Cultural Reflexivity, Digital Storytelling, And Personal Narratives In Language Teacher Education, Julie Vivienne Dell-Jones

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This narrative inquiry dissertation explores stories from three students over a two-year trajectory as they develop into language educators in diverse contexts. The study begins in a teacher education course focused on technology for language teaching in English as a second language (ESOL) and foreign language education (FLE) classrooms. As instructor, I implemented a digital storytelling (DS) project with the pedagogical goal of supporting the much-needed practice of reflexivity, and specifically, reflexivity of intercultural competence (IC) and culturally-responsive pedagogy (CRP). The DS, as an autoethnographic multimodal narrative activity, provided a creative outlet for undergraduate and master’s level students to explore …

Evaluation Of Academic And Social Engagement In A Technology-Based Collaborative Approach To Inclusive Geoscience Field Learning, Anita Marie Stone Marshall Apr 2018

Evaluation Of Academic And Social Engagement In A Technology-Based Collaborative Approach To Inclusive Geoscience Field Learning, Anita Marie Stone Marshall

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Field learning is an important aspect of geoscience education to teach or reinforce concepts and skills, and the highly social experience of field work can improve learning outcomes, create networks to support future academic success, and promote a sense of belonging in the geosciences. However, field learning presents significant barriers to participation for students with physical disabilities. The introduction of digital data collection and communication devices into traditional field work settings has created new opportunities to expand access to field learning experiences such as remote collaboration; a method of undertaking field work through collaborative teamwork and the use of digital …

Geospatial Inequalities And Determinants Of Nutritional Status Among Women And Children In Afghanistan: An Observational Study, Nadia Akseer, Zaid Ahmad Bhatti, Taufiq Mashal, Sajid Bashir Soofi, Rahim Moineddin, Robert E Black Md, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: Undernutrition is a pervasive condition in Afghanistan, and prevalence is among the highest in the world. We aimed to comprehensively assess district-level geographical disparities and determinants of nutritional status (stunting, wasting, or underweight) among women and children in Afghanistan.
Methods: The study used individualised data from the recent Afghanistan National Nutrition Survey 2013. Outcome variables were based on growth and weight anthropometry data, which we analysed linearly as Z scores and as dichotomous categories. We analysed data from a total of almost 14 000 index mother–child pairs using Bayesian spatial and generalised least squares regression models accounting for the …

Raeder Versus Wegener—Conflict In German Naval Strategy, Kenneth P. Hansen Apr 2018

Raeder Versus Wegener—Conflict In German Naval Strategy, Kenneth P. Hansen

Naval War College Review

German naval thought between the world wars was defined by a dispute between two distinguished officers: one who critiqued German naval performance in the conflict just ended, the other obliged to meet the very different realities of the war to come. Neither was wholly wrong or entirely correct; the disagreement produced concepts that mark naval doctrine today.

Why Doesn’T America Have A Nelson?—Does It Need One?, James Holmes

Naval War College Review

The U.S. Navy has yet to produce a commander who can equal Nelson’s combination of war-fighting excellence, personal gallantry, and public prominence. Whether the Navy can produce one today, absent a powerful rival on the high seas, is doubtful at best.

From Kadesh To Kandahar, Michael Evans Apr 2018

From Kadesh To Kandahar, Michael Evans

Naval War College Review

The problems facing strategists and military professionals in the early twenty-first century have changed dramatically and decisively. Military power and capability have expanded into a network of transnational interconnections. As a result, preparing for armed conflict is no longer only a matter of simply assembling battlefield strength to destroy defined adversaries.

The United States, North Korea, And The End Of Theagreed Framework, Jonathan D. Pollack Apr 2018

The United States, North Korea, And The End Of Theagreed Framework, Jonathan D. Pollack

Naval War College Review

The abrupt collapse of the U.S.–North Korea Agreed Framework has triggered mounting international concern over the longer-term consequences for the global nonproliferation regime. It has also exacerbated the most serious tensions in the fifty-year history of the U.S.–Republic of Korea alliance, quite possibly laying the groundwork for a major regional crisis unparalleled since the Korean War. How and why did this major policy breakdown occur?

The Joint Forces Air Command Problem, William A. Woodcock Apr 2018

The Joint Forces Air Command Problem, William A. Woodcock

Naval War College Review

The marriage of network-centric warfare and the joint forces air component commander concept represents a “military-technical revolution” in aero- space command and control.1 The current system is cumbersome, and it is falling behind in its ability to deal with the fast-paced warfare of today. By its nature, network-centric warfare (NCW) could address many of the shortfalls of the cur- rent joint air component system. It will not, however, change the fundamental nature of war, nor can it solve all of the current problems of the joint forces air component commander (JFACC).

The Sheriff: America’S Defense Of The New World Order, Mark T. Clark Apr 2018

The Sheriff: America’S Defense Of The New World Order, Mark T. Clark

Naval War College Review

What role should the United States play in contemporary international politics? This question, or rather debate, began at the end of the Cold War and has never really concluded. It is a unique debate because while everyone disagrees on the question, all agree on its sub- stance—the United States is the preem- inent power in the world. People refer to the United States by various names: the lone superpower, the unipolar mo- ment, Pax Americana, and from some of its erstwhile allies and former ene- mies, the unilateral hegemon or hyperpower.

Inevitable Surprises: Thinking Ahead In A Time Of Turbulence,, Frank Hoffman

Naval War College Review

The intelligence community is getting a bad rap these days as it attempts to help policy makers weather the myriad na- tional security challenges in the Age of Disruption. The controversy over weap- ons of mass destruction and protracted post-conflict insurgency in Iraq are only two incidents in a series of surprises. Whether it is the demise of the Soviet Union, economic collapses in Southeast Asia, the development of nuclear weapons in India and Pakistan, North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, terrorist attacks on the United States, or the subsequent anthrax attacks, being taken by surprise is becoming the norm.

The Relationship Between State Effectiveness And State Legitimacy: A Quantitative Test, Bich Thi Ngoc Tran

Theses and Dissertations

Legitimacy is a contested concept in political science. The question of legitimacy has been addressed in various topics, including state formation, state building, and state failure. This research is an attempt to quantitatively test the relationship between state legitimacy and state effectiveness and development in the economy, politics, and society. By examining the literature on legitimacy and its sources, the research tests the following hypothesis: a state with better performance in macro issues, including economic performance, social welfare, and political participation, is more likely to enjoy a higher level of legitimacy. In other words, this study attempts to establish a …
