Do Students Feel Safe On Campus? A Policy Evaluation Of The Clery Act, Amanda Sidwell

Honors Theses

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (the Clery Act) is federal policy aimed at creating safer college campuses. It attempts to provide students with statistics on crimes that occur on campus and inform them of the security policies and various resources available to them. The Clery Act also mandates that institutions of higher education (IHE) send out alerts of emergencies that occur on campus.

So how safe do Western Michigan University (WMU or “Western”) students feel on campus? This study attempted to answer this question by asking students through a survey. The students’ …

Cyclic Durability Of Thermal Barrier Coatings Subject To Cmas Attack, Alan Harris Apr 2018

Cyclic Durability Of Thermal Barrier Coatings Subject To Cmas Attack, Alan Harris

Doctoral Dissertations

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are critical in modern gas turbine engines, increasing operating temperature, efficiency, and component life. Engines have reached temperatures at which ingested debris (CMAS) forms silicate melts that chemically and mechanically attack TBCs, leading to premature failure. New, CMAS-resistant coatings must be validated under conditions that recreate real-world TBC-CMAS interactions. No standardized testing to perform these analyses currently exists.

A cyclic thermal gradient rig with incremental CMAS deposition was developed based on modified literature designs. Tests performed using literature-based parameters showed TBC-CMAS interactions and failure morphology deemed not real-world representative by an engine manufacturer. The results were …

A Systems Analysis Of Factors Influencing Household Solar Pv Adoption In Santiago, Chile, Jeffrey P. Walters, Jessica Kaminsky, Lawrence Gottschamer

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Societal uptake of household solar photovoltaic (PV) technology is the result of a complex and interdependent array of technical, social, political and economic factors. This novel study employs a systems lens to examine both technical and non-technical barriers to renewables, with a focus on interactions that are empirically influential on PV uptake. Using local solar expert stakeholder input into a participatory systems approach, this study provides a structural analysis of factors influencing household solar adoption. The approach is applied and assessed for household solar PV systems in Santiago, Chile, to gain insight into the interconnected factors driving technology adoption. Barriers …

Riot Grrrl And Girl Zines: Intersectional Feminist Art In Action, Paige Szmodis Apr 2018

Riot Grrrl And Girl Zines: Intersectional Feminist Art In Action, Paige Szmodis

Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies Honors Papers

This project examines the Riot Grrrl punk feminist movement of the 1990s and its production of girl zines as artistic, cultural, and political artifacts. Zines, or self-produced and self-published magazines, allowed young women access to DIY (do-it-yourself) mediums for self-representation. As Riot Grrrl’s third-wave feminist consciousness and cultural production tactics spread to more girls throughout the 90s, zines became a primary method of communication and community-building for girls in the movement and on the outskirts of the scene. From girl zines in the Barnard Zine Library, I gathered data to map over 600 zines from the 1990s in the United …

This qualitative inductive research explores the potential benefits for the Scandinavian economy and ports through the implementation of the Northern Sea Route (NSR) as an alternative for container shipping to the established Southern route through the Suez Canal. To extract expert’s opinions and address these objectives, we utilised in-depth face-to-face semi-structured interviews through purposive sampling in a single case study setting.

The analysis of the data demonstrates that the commercialisation of NSR can yield benefits for the Scandinavian economy (e.g. GDP increase, jobs creation) and reveals the benefits of Scandinavian ports (e.g. ECA’s, flexibility, hinterland, etc.) compared to other ports …

Cultural Identity Silencing Of Native American Identity In Education: A Descriptive Phenomenological Investigation, Katheryne Leigh Apr 2018

Cultural Identity Silencing Of Native American Identity In Education: A Descriptive Phenomenological Investigation, Katheryne Leigh

Dissertations

Native American Nations have been subjected to colonialism for centuries the impact of which led to further traumatic events and disparities. Although recent scholarship has investigated possible relationships between traumas experienced in education and issues such as depression, substance use, poor academic achievement, and suicide, there remained a need for qualitative studies exploring the phenomenon from the voice of the experiencer. The purpose of this study was to investigate the phenomenon of cultural identity silencing of Native American identity in education. Eight young adult self-identified Native American/Alaskan college students between the ages of 18-25 who experienced cultural identity silencing in …

Adapting To Environmental And Social Change: Subsistence In Three Aleutian Communities, Jennifer Schmidt, Matthew Berman Apr 2018

Adapting To Environmental And Social Change: Subsistence In Three Aleutian Communities, Jennifer Schmidt, Matthew Berman

ISER Reports

Our surroundings and society are both constantly evolving. Some changes are due to natural processes. People are responsible for other changes, because of what we do—for example, increasing the size of the population, expanding technology, and increasing mobility and connectivity. And some changes—like climate change—are due to a combination of natural processes and actions of people. In the Arctic, including the Aleutian Islands, marine and coastal ecosystems have seen the largest number of regime shifts with direct and indirect consequences for subsistence activities, commercial fisheries, and coastal communities (Council 2016). This paper describes current subsistence activities and changes local residents …

Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project: Report Of The 2003 Season, Nicholas K. Rauh

Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project, 1996-2011

The Rough Cilicia Survey Team was investigating the role of Rough Cilicia as a production region to the ancient Roman Mediterranean economy. Our investigative methods in the 2003 season included remote sensing of satellite imagery; surface, geomorphological, and maritime survey; charcoal analysis of ceramic production residue for timber identification; and biogeochemical analysis of regional terrestrial vegetation preserved in sediments. The project team identified crucial indicators of economic production activities associated with the renewable resource of timber (particularly cedar) from Cilician mountain forests. To refine this question, the project was examining the basin of the Biçkici River (modern Gazipaşa, Turkey) as …

When The Far East Becomes The Near East, Kylan Rutherford Apr 2018

When The Far East Becomes The Near East, Kylan Rutherford

Marriott Student Review

America is in a critical stage of change in its international roles. The world has shifted away from the dated Cold-War binaries and surface-level, orientalist understandings of the East. The rising generation in America has the potential to connect with the international world in unprecedented ways, but for that to happen we have some homework to do.

The Imperial Legacy: An Examination Of The Trends Of Empire And Genocide From German Southwest Africa To The General Government, Laura Guebert

Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal

This project is an examination of correlations between imperial enterprises of the Second German Empire and the Nazi Reich through the lenses of global and imperial critiques. The three primary case studies are German Southwest Africa, the Ober Ost, and Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe, particularly the General Government. This research draws heavily on certain themes and theories developed by leading historians of modern German and Eastern European history, including Timothy Snyder, Ben Kiernan, Shelley Baranowski, Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius, and Christopher Browning. By understanding the shared trends of empire and genocide, it is my aim to bring the actions of the National …

Articles

The study reported here investigates the role that planned social gatherings play in shaping social connections, forging group identity and re-affirming connections with significant ‘home’ places within families where relationships extend across space. Empirically, it draws on a study of the Gathering, a 2013 national tourism initiative that encouraged people in Ireland to organise ‘gatherings’ to attract ‘home’ family members scattered across the globe. It reports data generated using mixed methods administered in two Irish counties. The findings demonstrate the profound meanings that the gatherings had for participating family members. The events served to strengthen existing family ties and to …

Teacher And Student Perceptions Of Student Engagement In A 9th Grade Classroom, Kathryn Field Apr 2018

Teacher And Student Perceptions Of Student Engagement In A 9th Grade Classroom, Kathryn Field

Doctoral Dissertations

Student engagement is integral to the process of learning. Teacher moves, or the behaviors that teachers enact in the process of teaching, have been shown to influence students’ engagement. Research indicates that students are more likely to engage in learning when they believe their teacher supports student autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Less is known about the precise types of moves that engender these feelings in students and how teacher-student relationships play a unique role in student engagement. In this qualitative case study, I studied teacher and student perceptions of the engagement process and teacher-student relationships in a naturally occurring, …

Spatial Dynamics And Productivity Of A Gulf Of Mexico Commercial Reef Fish Fishery Following Large Scale Disturbance And Management Change, Marcy Lynn Cockrell Apr 2018

Spatial Dynamics And Productivity Of A Gulf Of Mexico Commercial Reef Fish Fishery Following Large Scale Disturbance And Management Change, Marcy Lynn Cockrell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Gulf of Mexico commercial reef fish fishery has experienced significant management changes and disturbance in recent years, including transitioning two major fisheries from a traditional open access system into a limited entry individual fishing quota (IFQ) system in 2007 and 2010. Also in 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (DWH) released an estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf (~206 million U.S. gallons), and is still the largest U.S. environmental disaster to date. Emergency fishing closures initiated shortly after the oil spill began were successful in keeping tainted seafood from reaching markets. However, effects of DWH closures …

Evaluation Of Open Data Government Sites: A Comparative Study, Jayanta Kr Nayek

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The problems of open data government sites are mainly in the way data is presented by various government data repositories. There are no metadata standards, specifications, or protocols to achieve better discoverability and interoperability. This paper aims to find a way to solve the problems with open data government sites and propose a framework to provide web based data services which will be semantically structured and also propose a common metadata standard or mechanism for interoperability. Six data government sites have been selected for the study, according to the more number of dataset available and also to cover all continents …

The Variability In The Morphological Active Width: Results From Physical Models Of Gravel‐Bed Braided Rivers, Sarah Peirce, Pauline Leduc, Peter Ashmore Apr 2018

The Variability In The Morphological Active Width: Results From Physical Models Of Gravel‐Bed Braided Rivers, Sarah Peirce, Pauline Leduc, Peter Ashmore

Geography & Environment Publications

The morphological active width, defined as the lateral extent of bed-material displacement over time, is a fundamental parameter in multi-threaded gravel-bed rivers, linking complex channel dynamics to bedload transport. Here, results are presented from 5 constant discharge experiments, and three event hydrographs, covering a range of flow strengths and channel configurations for which morphological change, bedload transport rates, and stream power were measured in a physical model. Changes in channel morphology were determined via differencing of photogrammetrically-derived digital elevation models (DEMs) of the model surface generated at regular intervals over the course of ~115 hours of experimental runs. Independent measures …
