Correcting For The Inconveniences Of Cultivation: Foraging As A Food Source In Southwestern Burkina Faso, Julia Deryn Morgan Apr 2018

Correcting For The Inconveniences Of Cultivation: Foraging As A Food Source In Southwestern Burkina Faso, Julia Deryn Morgan

Geography Honors Projects

Malnutrition is an important public health issue in Burkina Faso where 30 % of children are underweight for their age and 92% suffer from iron deficiency. Such statistics indicate that there is a significant lack of adequate nutrition in the country. With approximately 80% of the population employed in the agricultural sector, development projects have focused on increasing agricultural production and commercializing output to ameliorate poor nutrition. However, this strategy ignores the importance of local knowledge and food traditions, most notably by neglecting to acknowledge foraging as a significant source of food. To address this concern, I seek to understand …

Perceptions Of Teachers And Parents On The Educational Experiences Of Students With Autism In A Remote Rural Community, Amy Price Azano, Mary Elizabeth Tackett Apr 2018

Perceptions Of Teachers And Parents On The Educational Experiences Of Students With Autism In A Remote Rural Community, Amy Price Azano, Mary Elizabeth Tackett

The Rural Educator

While there is a steady increase in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), relatively little is known about the unique experiences of students with ASD in rural communities. This study investigates how the rural context influences the educational experiences of students with ASD. The researchers used an online questionnaire and in-person interviews of special education teachers, general education teachers, and parents to collect their perceptions of the unique experiences for students with ASD living in a remote rural community of Appalachia. Data generation and analysis led to the discussion of three salient themes: limited parental knowledge, lack of resources …

Achieving Access To Mental Health Care For School-Aged Children In Rural Communities, Jacob Blackstock, Ki Byung Chae, Angela Mcdonald, Gary W. Mauk Apr 2018

Achieving Access To Mental Health Care For School-Aged Children In Rural Communities, Jacob Blackstock, Ki Byung Chae, Angela Mcdonald, Gary W. Mauk

The Rural Educator

With creativity and collaboration, children in rural communities who have the same mental health needs as children in urban areas can achieve access to mental health care. This review of the literature explores barriers to mental health services facing school-aged children in rural communities, focusing on how challenges unique to rural communities affect the type of care rural children ultimately receive. This review aligns with the NREA Research Agenda area “access to counseling/mental health services”. The discussion incorporates national trends in the treatment of children with mental health concerns and highlights some surprising facts about the state of mental health …

Learning To Be Rural: Lessons About Being Rural In Teacher Education Programs, Eric Moffa, Erin Mchenry-Sorber Apr 2018

Learning To Be Rural: Lessons About Being Rural In Teacher Education Programs, Eric Moffa, Erin Mchenry-Sorber

The Rural Educator

This qualitative study investigated the evolving perceptions of rurality of five Appalachian native, first-year teachers as influenced by their teacher preparation program. Findings suggested tensions between participants’ rural upbringings and programmatic and non-rural peer conceptions of rurality that surfaced during their program of study. Responses to these tensions included participants positioning themselves as “rural representatives” in their courses and, in some cases, the adoption of revised conceptions of rurality. Intra-Appalachian diversity, such as different childhood community types and childhood social class, influenced participants’ conceptualizations of rurality and their perceptions of its representation in their programs. The majority of participants perceived …

Safety At Schools: Identifying The Costs Associated With The Necessary Safeguards For Arming Educators, Spencer C. Weiler, Luke Cornelius, Jacob D. Skousen

The Rural Educator

Editors’ note: The Rural Educator publishes a policy brief each issue, intended to explore topics pertinent to rural education policy and advocacy. The issue of school safety is particularly timely, especially for rural schools. We believe this essay, based on surveys of school leaders in Colorado, takes a unique perspective by examining the financial costs that might be associated with policies to place guns in schools.

Foreign Language Learning Policy In The United Arab Emirates: Local And Global Agents Of Change, Mira Al Hussein, Christina Gitsaki Apr 2018

Foreign Language Learning Policy In The United Arab Emirates: Local And Global Agents Of Change, Mira Al Hussein, Christina Gitsaki

All Works

In an effort to highlight the multitude of local and global forces that can facilitate and shape foreign Language Learning Policy, this chapter provides a historical exploration of foreign language policies in a rather idiosyncratic context, that of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a country where the indigenous locals are the minority and where the rulers of the country have embraced the global as a means to empower the local and usher the country in the era of modernisation and globalisation. English language teachers/experts and institutions have long been welcomed to the UAE to empower the nation in its quest …

The Development And Management Of Security Risks Along The Western Balkans Migration Route, Jonathan Harsh Apr 2018

The Development And Management Of Security Risks Along The Western Balkans Migration Route, Jonathan Harsh

European Union Policy Studies Graduate Symposium

The Western Balkans Migration Route, stretching between the Middle East and the southeastern region of the European Union (EU), has long been a source of political and cultural strife, most recently due to its prevalence during the 2015 Migration Crisis. The chaotic movement of refugees and asylum seekers created an environment for security risks to develop along the route, with three in particular seeing a rise in prevalence: human smuggling, trafficking of illegal goods and the movement of dangerous individuals into the EU. This paper looks into, via separate case studies, the history and development of each security risk within …

Regions Of Blurred Power: Violent Non-State Actors In The Western Balkans, Fabio Seferi Apr 2018

Regions Of Blurred Power: Violent Non-State Actors In The Western Balkans, Fabio Seferi

European Union Policy Studies Graduate Symposium

In conflict-prone and/or post-conflict environments, the action of violent non-state actors (VNSAs) brings up many security concerns and issues since it wedges in the grey zones of state authority. Indeed, violent non-state actors emerge and function countering the state: in the opposition to state authority they find their raison d’etre, since most of them challenge the legitimacy and the integrity of the state itself. A typology of violent non-state actors through the lines of authority over population or authority over territory can help us explain where the “lost spaces” of state sovereignty are. While during state collapse a certain typology …

Congressional Redistricting: Keeping Communities Together?, Kalyn M. Rossiter, David W. S. Wong, Paul L. Delamater Apr 2018

Congressional Redistricting: Keeping Communities Together?, Kalyn M. Rossiter, David W. S. Wong, Paul L. Delamater

Geography Faculty Scholarship

The process of congressional redistricting, delineating boundaries for districts in which voters elect members to the U.S. House of Representatives, has always been an expensive and controversial process. Congressional districts (CDs) are redrawn due to changes in population reflected by the decennial census to ensure equal representation. Laws and regulations literature identifies eight criteria that may be considered when determining the boundaries of CDs and this article focuses on one of those criteria, maintaining communities of interest (COIs). This criterion requires states to preserve these boundaries when delineating CDs but fails to define a COI. This research proposes and evaluates …

In The Shadow Of Japanese Identity, Rosendo Lopez-Duran Apr 2018

In The Shadow Of Japanese Identity, Rosendo Lopez-Duran

East Asian Studies Honors Papers

Japan is, as former Prime Minister Asō Tarō once put it, commonly described as being “one race, one civilization, one language and one culture.” This statement reflects a popular conception of Japan as a homogenous nation. However, the purpose of this paper, building on earlier research, is to assess what exactly Japanese identity is, how it is constructed / maintained, and who is and is not considered “Japanese.” The impetus of this inquiry comes from my research of the hisabetsu burakumin, a Japanese social outcaste group, who have undergone significant changes throughout their long history as a socially-constructed “minority.” …

International Nurse Migration From India And The Philippines: The Challenge Of Meeting The Sustainable Development Goals In Training, Orderly Migration, And Healthcare Worker Retention, Maddy Thompson, Margaret Walton-Roberts Apr 2018

International Nurse Migration From India And The Philippines: The Challenge Of Meeting The Sustainable Development Goals In Training, Orderly Migration, And Healthcare Worker Retention, Maddy Thompson, Margaret Walton-Roberts

Global Nurse Migration Pathways: A Comparative Project

This paper examines nurse migration from India and the Philippines through the lens of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) 4.3 (access to training), 10.7 (orderly and responsible migration) and 3.c (retention of health workers). The international migration of health workers has increasingly featured on the agenda of global health agencies. Ameliorating the negative impact of international nurse emigration from low-income nations has been addressed by several western governments with the adoption of ethical recruitment guidelines, one element of an orderly migration framework. One of the challenges in creating such guidelines is to understand how the emigration of trained nurses influences …

Pagebrook Property Solar Power Initiative, Mary Kate Jaromin

Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects

The University of Richmond has established an ambitious goal of carbon neutrality by the year 2050 (Office for Sustainability 2015). The University’s current emissions reductions are at 18 percent from 2009 baseline levels; in order the achieve the last 82 percent of the reductions by 2050, the University must take aggressive action (R. Andrejewski, personal communication, March 1, 2018). The University owns land off campus, including the Pagebrook Property, which is around a 15-minute drive from campus and has 47 acres of flat, clear cut land that is currently unused (Love & Owens, 2014). This land would be an ideal …

A Look At Modern Day Bilingualism, David Bocach Apr 2018

A Look At Modern Day Bilingualism, David Bocach

Academic Festival

Bilingualism is a fascinating phenomenon that can affect many different aspects of a person’s life. By mastering and being fluent in at least two languages, untold opportunities, changes, and perspectives can be learned and further explored. Experiencing life in two languages can almost be like experiencing two different worlds or seeing things from multiple perspectives. People become bilingual for a variety of factors such as assimilation, integration, higher education, or through their profession. Becoming bilingual can affect not only the person’s life, but also their own physiology and neurological activity, economic and social standing, and cultural and historical perception. Such …

Of Ruptures And Raptures: Locating Ideology With Lidar Imagery, William D. Schroeder Ms, Rpa Apr 2018

Of Ruptures And Raptures: Locating Ideology With Lidar Imagery, William D. Schroeder Ms, Rpa

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)

Archaeological praxis necessarily requires at least one object (an artifact; a piece of technology or something that functions as an object) to articulate and explain ideologies from the past. The problem is that the object of ideological desire is abstract and difficult to locate in the archaeological record in reified form. Historical Archaeologist Mark P. Leone attempted to locate such an object several times while conducting archaeological investigations into historical Mormonism, Mormon historical ecology, and technologies employed by Mormons in the arid American West. It is posited here that the object of Mormon ideological desire in the archaeological record within …

A Right To Universal Health Coverage In Resource-Constrained Nations? Towards A Blueprint For Better Health Outcomes, Uchechukwu Ngwaba Apr 2018

A Right To Universal Health Coverage In Resource-Constrained Nations? Towards A Blueprint For Better Health Outcomes, Uchechukwu Ngwaba

The Transnational Human Rights Review

Universal health coverage, as conceived by the World Health Organization (WHO) and adopted in the programmatic framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is a clarion call for states to strengthen their health financing systems to avoid catastrophic and impoverishing health spending. However, the framing of the goals of universal health coverage fails to take account of underlying determinants of health and appears to abandon decades of health rights scholarship and jurisprudence. This scholarship and jurisprudence, although not entirely free from disagreements and shortcomings, is argued to offer a better framework for universal health coverage when strengthened with the paradigm …

Riverfront Ur: Proposal And Student Well-Being, Harleen Bal

Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects

In an effort to improve student well-being, connection to nature, and community engagement with nature and green spaces, the following paper details a proposal for Riverfront UR (RFUR), an initiative to acquire property along the James River for use by University of Richmond students. The proposal began in Dr. Salisbury’s fall Geography 345 class, and this analysis builds upon that proposal by delving into the connection between student health and quality of life with time spent outdoors and in natural spaces. Indeed, a riverfront off-campus property would be competitively advantageous for the University and would likely improve our STARS ratings, …

Improving Biodiversity Management At The University Of Richmond: An Ecological Approach To Sustainability, Maria Psarakis Apr 2018

Improving Biodiversity Management At The University Of Richmond: An Ecological Approach To Sustainability, Maria Psarakis

Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects

This proposal outlines a plan for the monitoring, management, and conservation of vulnerable species and habitats on the University of Richmond’s main campus and its nearby properties. It develops a strategy for the coordinated planning and implementation of biodiversity management by conceptualizing centralized leadership, pathways for student involvement, and the creation of community partnerships with the Virginia state government and local wildlife groups. Additionally, it highlights key justifications for the execution of this project. These reasons include the successful examples of such schemes in competitor institutions, the standing of the University of Richmond in national sustainability rankings, formal University commitments …
