How National Culture Influences Individuals’ Subjective Experience With Paradoxical Tensions, Joshua Keller, Erica Wen Chen, Angela K. Y. Leung
How National Culture Influences Individuals’ Subjective Experience With Paradoxical Tensions, Joshua Keller, Erica Wen Chen, Angela K. Y. Leung
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine how national culture influences individuals’ subjective experience of tension when confronting paradoxical demands that arise during their day-to-day organizational experience. The paper further explores two types of paradoxical demands (task-oriented and relational-oriented) and two mediating mechanisms (tolerance for contradictions and harmony enhancement concerns) that exhibit contrary cultural effects.Design/methodology/approach: Drawing from a sample of white-collar workers in China and the USA, the authors first inductively generated scenarios with task-oriented and relational-oriented paradoxical demands and then conducted three studies where participants rated the perceived tension from the scenarios. In Study 1, they examined …

Achievements And Limits Of Strategic Communication For Nation-Building: The Case Of Spain’S Catalan Region (1979-2017), César García
Achievements And Limits Of Strategic Communication For Nation-Building: The Case Of Spain’S Catalan Region (1979-2017), César García
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Arts and Humanities
This paper explores the use of strategic communication for nation building purposes in Catalonia after the approval of the Second Statute of Autonomy in 1979. During this period, the Generalitat de Catalunya, Catalonia’s self-government political organization, has used the high degree of autonomy in a number of areas involving culture, communications or education, among others, to enhance a Catalan identity opposed to the Spanish identity. Soft power approaches – mainly the promotion of Catalan language, culture, sports and symbols – and the implementation of linguistic laws have resulted in a positive climate of opinion concerning an inclusive Catalan identity in …

Kritikal Na Pagsasalin Ng Isang Tulang Sosyopolitikal Ni Jose Maria Sison, Jeconiah Louis Dreisbach
An Effectual Approach For The Development Of Novel Applications On Digital Platforms, Onkar Shamrao Malgonde
An Effectual Approach For The Development Of Novel Applications On Digital Platforms, Onkar Shamrao Malgonde
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The development of novel software applications on digital platforms differs from traditional software development and provides unique challenges to the software development manager and team. Application producers must achieve application-platform match, application-market match, value propositions exceeding platform’s core value propositions, and novelty. These desired properties support a new vision of the software development team as entrepreneurs with a goal of developing novel applications on digital platforms. Digital platforms are characterized by an uncertain, risky, and resource-constrained environment, where existing approaches—plan-driven, ad-hoc, and controlled-flexible—have limited applicability. Building on the theoretical basis of the theory of effectuation from the entrepreneurship domain, this …
A Political Companion To Frederick Douglass, Neil Roberts
A Political Companion To Frederick Douglass, Neil Roberts
Civil Rights
Frederick Douglass (1818–1895) was a prolific writer and public speaker whose impact on American literature and history has been long studied by historians and literary critics. Yet as political theorists have focused on the legacies of such notables as W. E. B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington, Douglass's profound influence on Afro-modern and American political thought has often been undervalued. In an effort to fill this gap in the scholarship on Douglass, editor Neil Roberts and an exciting group of established and rising scholars examine the author's autobiographies, essays, speeches, and novella. Together, they illuminate his genius for analyzing …

A Place To Stand: Community Media Centers, James Joseph Knightwright
Theses and Dissertations
With the experience of 30+ years in community media, I envision providing a resource for scholars as well as community media practitioners and stakeholders. I am investigating the processes of training at community media centers (CMC) to determine potential impacts and effects. Functioning as a participant observer, I will prepare a documentary film focusing on the practices and processes utilized by CMCs to serve their communities.
Concentrating on Columbia Access Television (CAT TV), Columbia, Missouri and the Sun Prairie Media Center (SPMC), Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, I plan to visit each location to interview station staff, volunteers, and community members. These …
Queer’Ing Croporate Pride: Memory, Intersectionality, And Corporeality In Activist Assemblies Of Resistance, Hunter C. Thompson
Queer’Ing Croporate Pride: Memory, Intersectionality, And Corporeality In Activist Assemblies Of Resistance, Hunter C. Thompson
Theses - ALL
This thesis chronicles two areas of queer social movement activity—the history of Pride in major metropolitan American cities, and Queerbomb a DIY Pride festival in Austin, Texas—to critique the material-spatial impacts of corporate culture on performances of LGBTQ Pride, pinpointing how business interests limit the lines of solidarity that can be drawn around queerness at Pride assemblies. Using fragments gathered from historical accounts, field interviews, and the internet, I explore scenes of radical activist worldmaking resisting the corporatization of numerous Pride events. This exploration intervenes in counterpublic theory (Asen; Brouwer; Fraser) by emphasizing the need to explore public space and …
Landscape Mobility Of The Precontact Ohlone: An Isotopic Investigation Of Dietary Reconstruction, Landscape Mobility, And Marriage Patterns, Kelli Sullivan
Landscape Mobility Of The Precontact Ohlone: An Isotopic Investigation Of Dietary Reconstruction, Landscape Mobility, And Marriage Patterns, Kelli Sullivan
Master's Theses
Marriage and post-marital residence patterns shape and define various aspects of a population’s culture. This study aims to understand the complex relationships of precontact individuals from one earthen-mound burial site, Ryan Mound (CA-ALA-329), by examining human stable isotopes to elucidate mobility patterns through time. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes from serial-sections of human third molars from the Ryan Mound suggest that mobility increased for males around the ages of sexual maturity for the Middle Period and Phase I of the Late Period, while females tended to be more stable in their residence, consistent with a matrilocal society. Both males and …

An Examination Of Optimism Between Gender, Race, And School Classification Of Millennial Students – An Exploratory Study, Abigail C. Johnson
An Examination Of Optimism Between Gender, Race, And School Classification Of Millennial Students – An Exploratory Study, Abigail C. Johnson
Honors College Theses
Optimism is defined as an individual’s approach to the expectation that good things will happen in the future and bad things are a rarity. Along with the general definition of what optimism is, many researchers have found that optimism depends on culturally embedded values and beliefs (Singh & Shukla, 2014; Lee & Mason, 2013). In addition, the relationship between optimism and positive health outcomes and well-being is well established (Coll, J.E. & Draves, P. R., 2008; Bastianello, M. R., Pacico, J. C., & Hutz, C. S., 2014). Although this is the case, little research has been found examining the differences …
When Brother Becomes Other: Communitas And Conflict Along The Camino De Santiago, Megan E. Havard
When Brother Becomes Other: Communitas And Conflict Along The Camino De Santiago, Megan E. Havard
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
It is widely believed, both by scholars and practitioners of pilgrimage, that during the rite most if not all pilgrims experience communitas - a sense of community, of mutual understanding and acceptance of their fellow ritual initiates that is unfettered by traditional social structures or markers of difference. Nevertheless, evidence indicates that conflict also regularly arises among pilgrims, even as they navigate the same liminoid space in pursuit of a common goal. Pilgrims may experience conflict with one another due to differences in personality, divergent cultural backgrounds, the perception of scarcity of resources, the intrinsic stress of transformation, or myriad …
Design For Profit Or Prosper, Else Skjold, Frederik Larsen
Design For Profit Or Prosper, Else Skjold, Frederik Larsen
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Over the past decade, it has become increasingly popular to position design as an excellent tool for companies and organisations to foster innovation and growth. As an adaptable practice design can be applied to serve many ends, and in the field of sustainable transition design has the potential to create new solutions due to its capacity to ‘reframe’ large-scale problems of a ‘wicked’ nature. However, as we will argue in this paper, the innovation and change promoted through design risks becoming merely a vehicle for promoting the values associated with 20th century neoliberal capitalism. We therefore want to question the …
The Beauty Of Making Hot Chocolate - An Enquiry On Designing For Everyday Rituals, Pierre Lévy
The Beauty Of Making Hot Chocolate - An Enquiry On Designing For Everyday Rituals, Pierre Lévy
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The everyday is often mentioned in design, yet hardly inquired. The everyday is about what is banal, infraordinary, not memorable, as well as about the force that makes things habitual, endotic. In the research encompassing this paper, we question the everyday and explore opportunities to enchant it by design. This paper focuses more specifically on the design of everyday rituals, and aims to propose a descriptive framework to ‘read’ and compose such rituals. The elaboration of the framework is done based on a case study: the making of a hot chocolate in the morning. Through an autoethnographical approach, the main …
Have I Got A Proposition For You: Developing The Capability For Compelling Arguments Through Rhetorical Practice Inthe Design Studio, Veronika Kelly, Myra Thiessen
Have I Got A Proposition For You: Developing The Capability For Compelling Arguments Through Rhetorical Practice Inthe Design Studio, Veronika Kelly, Myra Thiessen
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Designers draw implicitly on rhetorical modes of appeal (ethos, pathos, logos) in the way they talk about their work in terms of its strategic, social, and cultural impact. Rhetorical practice on its own, however, may not align with an ethical position. Yet design’s increasing emphasis on values, behaviours, and social action indicates a practice that requires expertise in formulating compelling design propositions that inspire people to act. This has significance for design education in relation to developing learners’ capabilities in making more compelling arguments for their design work that emphasise the social and ethical impact of design in use. This …
How Consumers Read The Visual Presentation Of Food Packaging Design In A Cross-Cultural Context: A Conceptual Framework And Case Study, Linna Hu, Hua Dong
How Consumers Read The Visual Presentation Of Food Packaging Design In A Cross-Cultural Context: A Conceptual Framework And Case Study, Linna Hu, Hua Dong
DRS Biennial Conference Series
How consumers understand products is based largely on their communication with the products, which is significantly influenced not only by the consumers’ cultural background but also by the cultural context where the communication happens. This paper viewed consumers as readers who play active roles in the dynamic structure of communication and discussed how cultural factors affect consumers in reading design. Companies are now striving to create visually desirable products that can be universally recognized in the increasingly global marketplace. ‘Lao Gan Ma’, the most popular chilli sauce brand in China, was introduced as a case study in this paper. In …
Critique And Post-Critique In Social Innovation Projects: Between Speculation And Realism, Sissel Olander
Critique And Post-Critique In Social Innovation Projects: Between Speculation And Realism, Sissel Olander
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper discusses notions of critique, post-critique, speculation and realism, as it reflects through a practice-based design research project, which worked as part of a bigger Danish public innovation program with the involvement of citizens in the design of a new library and cultural house under construction. Specifically, the paper sets out to challenge what seems to be a dichotomous “either-or” thinking in the descriptions and analyses of practice-based design research projects. Accounts of design research that operates in overlapping landscapes of academia, public sector and business are often depicted as too solution-orientated and therefore not reflexive, too engaged and …

Soma-Wearable Design: Integrating Somaesthetic Practice And Fashion Design For Somatic Wellbeing, Heekyoung Jung, Anna Ståhl
Soma-Wearable Design: Integrating Somaesthetic Practice And Fashion Design For Somatic Wellbeing, Heekyoung Jung, Anna Ståhl
DRS Biennial Conference Series
With advanced technologies and raised expectations for the quality of life, research and design attempts are increasing to promote wellbeing. While data-based reflective practice and behaviour change have been a main strategy in supporting technology- mediated wellbeing, we bring the perspectives of somaesthetic practice and fashion design to complement this research scene. Assuming that body consciousness could positively influence self-perception, presentation and performance through clothing, we propose soma-wearable design as an alternative approach to explore qualities that elaborate and promote somatic wellbeing. First, we conceptualize constructive links between design for reflection, somaesthetic practice, and style-fashion-dress; and re- interpret the core …
The Road To Happiness Is Paved With Playful Intentions, Jesper Legaard
The Road To Happiness Is Paved With Playful Intentions, Jesper Legaard
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Through exploring the relation between designing for happiness and designing for play experiences, the paper proposes key elements that constitute meaningful play experiences. The paper proposes that designing for playfulness may also lead to more meaningfully engaging experiences. Meaningful experiences emerge when the activities of the experience comply with the interests, passions and goals of the person having the experience, by which meaningfulness is naturally linked to intrinsic motivation. This is true also for play activities, which are typically defined by e.g. being voluntary activities. Building on conditions for meaningful experiences, the author addresses the element of playfulness as a …
Critical Placemaking: Towards A More Critical Engagement For Participatory Design In The Urban Environment, Tania Allen, Sara Glee Queen
Critical Placemaking: Towards A More Critical Engagement For Participatory Design In The Urban Environment, Tania Allen, Sara Glee Queen
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper offers a framework for design research that invites civic participation in the construction of place, and aims to reignite the conversation Nigel Cross raised in 1971 as a part of the first proceeding of the Design Research Society, calling on a need for user participation and intentional boundary-crossing. The need for new methods is no more evident than in the field of urban design. As global populations are migrating at unprecedented rates, new and different ideas and cultures are integrating and colliding at a high velocity. Additionally, the digital tools we use to understand and navigate urban environments …
The Critical Design Exhibition: An Epistemic Space, Gillian Russell
The Critical Design Exhibition: An Epistemic Space, Gillian Russell
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The overall objective of this paper is to position the critical design exhibition as a context of discovery – a material space for thinking – distancing itself from the more didactic forms of exhibitions that still dominate practice today, and to pose ways to establish a far more dynamic and open relation between critical design and its staging. What will follow will be an examination of critical design as a form of research which seeks not so much to make explicit knowledge production but rather to provide a space for thinking. Consequently critical design is an open undertaking centred on …
Culture-Orientated Food Design For Social Issue, Yinman Guo, Tie Ji
Culture-Orientated Food Design For Social Issue, Yinman Guo, Tie Ji
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Cultural globalization threatens cultural diversity, especially for minority cultures and ethnic cultures. In response to the fading of cultural identities, there is rare literature discussing how design can contribute. Through integrating the cultural significance of food and food design methods, the paper proposes a culture-oriented food design model to strengthen cultural identity and create connections. A case study of designing a delivery service of Chinese food for the second-generation Chinese Americans is presented to solve their identity crisis through the process of defining user, content, experience, and design around culture respectively. Feedback from target users shows that the cultural meaning …
