Subjectivity And Methodology In The Arch‘I’Ve, Elizabeth J. Vincelette Jul 2018

Subjectivity And Methodology In The Arch‘I’Ve, Elizabeth J. Vincelette

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

This article explores methodologies from the fields of library archival science, human geography, composition and rhetoric, and established editorial practices in English studies. By elaborating on the role of a researcher’s subjectivity in archival creation, this work expands the conversation regarding methodology and archives, especially how archives present us with new ways of seeing and making narratives during the editorial decision-making involved in their creation. Writing about my own experience, I privilege the researcher’s point of view with a narrative about my construction of a digital archive. With archival research, we should promote the revelation of methods and methodology to …

Face Management And Servant-Leadership: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study Of Chinese And American Christian Church Leaders, Jiying Song Jul 2018

Face Management And Servant-Leadership: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study Of Chinese And American Christian Church Leaders, Jiying Song

Faculty Publications - George Fox Digital

Leaders can have a negative impact on organizations when they knowingly or unknowingly attempt to save face, that is, try to protect their standing or reputation. The strong cultural value of not losing face presents a unique challenge for organizational leaders. The desire to gain face and the fear of losing face will likely permeate leaders‟ decision-making processes without even being noticed. The phenomenon of face exists both in China and in the United States, yet misunderstandings and a lack of understanding of face exist in both countries. Face management is the communicative strategies people use to manage face during …

Reflections On The Future Of Global Legal Studies, Mark Fathi Massoud Jul 2018

Reflections On The Future Of Global Legal Studies, Mark Fathi Massoud

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

This Article proposes a set of theoretical ideas and practical innovations for the future of global legal studies in the three areas that make up the academic profession: research, teaching, and service. The future directions of global legal studies will involve building intellectual bridges that connect law with global politics, society, history, religion, and human behavior. Constructing these bridges preserves global legal studies as both an interdisciplinary enterprise and a movement for justice. This twin commitment to rigorous inquiry and social justice involves sustaining a welcoming community for graduate students and early career scholars, and prioritizing the experiences of those …

Questioning Gynocentric Utopia: Nature As Addict In “Description Of Cookeham”, Liberty S. Stanavage Jul 2018

Questioning Gynocentric Utopia: Nature As Addict In “Description Of Cookeham”, Liberty S. Stanavage

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

In her 1610 “The Description of Cookeham,” Amelia Lanyer presents Cookeham as a space in which women and nature exist in poetry-inducing harmony until the intervention of man. Lanyer’s poem highlights the deference of both the animals (who “sport . . . in her eye” and “attend”), and the landscape to Clifford: the hills “descend” to meet her footstep and then raise themselves again at her whim. This alignment frequently leads critics to describe Cookeham as a utopian feminist landscape that aligns women and nature against an antagonistic masculine influence.

However, this utopian vision dramatizes a landscape that is not …

Text Or Call?: How Mode Of Communication Impacts Desire For Subsequent Conversation, Rosemary Leo Jul 2018

Text Or Call?: How Mode Of Communication Impacts Desire For Subsequent Conversation, Rosemary Leo

Honors College Theses

Previous research has found that there is variability in the effectiveness of different types of digitally facilitated communication, but no research has been conducted on whether the mode of communication being used impacts the desire to engage in subsequent conversations with a particular individual. This study examined whether the mode of initial communication would have an impact upon the desire to engage in subsequent conversations. In a sample of 33 participants ages 18-22, I sought to examine how phone conversations and texting differ as methods of initial communication in regard to their impact on participants’ expressed desire for continued communication. …

Scripted Stereotypes In Reality Tv, Paulette S. Strauss Jul 2018

Scripted Stereotypes In Reality Tv, Paulette S. Strauss

Honors College Theses

Diversity, or lack thereof, has always been an issue in both television and film for years. But another great issue that ties in with the lack of diversity is misrepresentation, or a substantial presence of stereotypes in media. While stereotypes often are commonplace in scripted television and film, the possibility of stereotypes appearing in a program that claims to be based on reality seems unfitting. It is commonly known that reality television is not completely “unscripted” and is actually molded by producers and editors. While reality television should not consist of stereotypes, they have curiously made their way onto the …

Mathematics Teachers’ Teaching Practices In Relation To Textbooks: Exploring Praxeologies, Anna Pansell, Lisa Bjorklund Boistrup Jul 2018

Mathematics Teachers’ Teaching Practices In Relation To Textbooks: Exploring Praxeologies, Anna Pansell, Lisa Bjorklund Boistrup

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this article, we explore affordances of adopting the framework of praxeology by Chevallard in the analysis of mathematics classroom communication in relation to the communication in a textbook. While adopting praxeology, we carried out detailed analysis of communication in both classroom data and textbooks. The construed praxeologies describe the organisation of knowledge expressed for the same type of task in both classroom and textbook. The praxeologies were compared, with specific attention to the teacher’s practice. This analysis illuminates how teachers’ practices, realised in classroom communication, may be compared to other texts describing the same topics, with a focus on …

Lessons From The Past: Analyzing A Multipolar World And Shifting Transatlantic Relationships, Andrew Russo Jul 2018

Lessons From The Past: Analyzing A Multipolar World And Shifting Transatlantic Relationships, Andrew Russo

Student Work

Rival ideologies and states, some new, some ancient, are emerging to create a multipolar world where regional spheres of influence arise out of the space abandoned by a weakening American ideology and state. New challenges have arisen during this latest shift in global power dynamics. States and the complex mechanisms and relationships that comprise them are now interacting as a power vacuum develops, seeking both standing and hegemony. How these interactions affect rising regional powers will have drastic consequences for future stability, peace, and progress and the current state of affairs, if history is to serve as a lesson, is …

Jamaica Kincaid And Olive Senior Gardening Through History, Cultivating Rhizomic Subjectivities, Myriam Moise Jul 2018

Jamaica Kincaid And Olive Senior Gardening Through History, Cultivating Rhizomic Subjectivities, Myriam Moise

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This analysis of texts by Jamaica Kincaid and Olive Senior focuses on their representations of  landscapes and their re-envisioning of the scarred lands historically cultivated by their African  enslaved ancestors. Gardening through history is a process of feminine resistance, a genuine  metaphor for plowing into one’s land and repossessing one’s body.

The Globalised Garden: Jamaica Kincaid’S Postcolonial Gothic, Eleanor Byrne Jul 2018

The Globalised Garden: Jamaica Kincaid’S Postcolonial Gothic, Eleanor Byrne

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This article examines the tension between the pleasures of gardening and the colonial legacy of  botany in Jamaica Kincaid’s My Garden (Book): arguing that her work involves an uncanny  worlding that haunts the present, speaks of forgotten violences and demonstrates a common  ground between vegetal, animal and human lives in the Anthropocene.

Postcolonial Hauntings: Ghostly Presence In Jamaica Kincaid’S The Autobiography Of My Mother, Simone A. James Alexander Jul 2018

Postcolonial Hauntings: Ghostly Presence In Jamaica Kincaid’S The Autobiography Of My Mother, Simone A. James Alexander

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

The Autobiography of My Mother tells the story of loss, abandonment, survival, and resistance. This chapter explores the haunting or ghostly presence of both the living and the dead. The ghosts  of slavery and colonialism haunt the character/s and the text; in retaliation, Xuela/Kincaid  performs a “ghosting” by defying narrative conventions, by blurring the line between fiction, myth,  biography, and autobiography.

Creating A New Normal: Language Education For All, Aleidine Kramer Moeller, Martha G. Abbott Jul 2018

Creating A New Normal: Language Education For All, Aleidine Kramer Moeller, Martha G. Abbott

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

How close are we to the reality of all students having the opportunity to learn another language and gaining support for these efforts from the general public? The answer has a long history, which we point out by referencing articles that span the 50‐year history of Foreign Language Annals. From the 1979 President’s Commission on Foreign Language and International Studies report under President Jimmy Carter to the recent article by Kroll and Dussias (2017) on the benefits of multilingualism, this article tracks ACTFL’s advocacy efforts over the years. Most recently, the 2017 launch of the Lead with Languages public awareness …

Sinolization Of Christianity: Increasing Gospel Relevance Or Distorting The Gospel Message?, L. Asher Jul 2018

Sinolization Of Christianity: Increasing Gospel Relevance Or Distorting The Gospel Message?, L. Asher

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

"This study aims to address the concept of the Sinolization of Christianity in light of cultural studies, biblical principles, and the Great Controversy perspective. It will then set forth some ideas on how it could affect the communication of the gospel in the Chinese context. It will attempt to see if Sinolization makes the gospel more relevant or further distorts the Christian message through the lens of the Chinese culture. The answers to these questions should help Chinese Christians, and especially Adventists, better understand their mission in China."

El Futuro Ya Está Aquí: A Comparative Analysis Of Punk In Spain And Mexico, Rex Richard Wilkins Jul 2018

El Futuro Ya Está Aquí: A Comparative Analysis Of Punk In Spain And Mexico, Rex Richard Wilkins

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the punk genre's evolution into commercial mainstream music in Spain and Mexico. It looks at how this evolution altered both the aesthetic and gesture of the genre. This evolution can be seen by examining four bands that followed similar musical and commercial trajectories. In Spain, Kaka de Luxe and Radio Futura; in Mexico, Size and Ritmo Peligroso. Since punk music's gesture is both visceral and political, various methods of suppressing or containing the punk gesture arise. For both Spain and Mexico, containing the punk gesture was a matter of government censorship in the early years of punk. …

Leadership And Spirituality: Conceptualization, Definition And Future Directions In Higher Education, Simone Elias, Brian Cole, Linda Wilson-Jones

Journal of Research Initiatives

This conceptual paper addresses the increased need to better conceptualize and define leadership and spirituality in higher education. Over the past decade, empirical research related to spirituality and leadership has gained momentum and has attracted interest from scholars, worldwide. With the increasing diversity of cultures and beliefs, particularly in western societies, the academia's acknowledgment of spirituality and leadership's importance not only present potentialities but also to reveal challenges; since some researchers support a religion-based perspective of the concept, while others indicate that the concept goes beyond religiosity. Therefore, this systematic literature attempts to reconcile diverse viewpoints into a more cohesive …

Clara Gardenia Otero, Palmira Parés Y El Feminismo Queer De Manuel Ramos Otero, Dinorah Cortes-Velez Jul 2018

Clara Gardenia Otero, Palmira Parés Y El Feminismo Queer De Manuel Ramos Otero, Dinorah Cortes-Velez

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

This essay examines the short stories “Romance de Clara Gardenia Otero” and “El cuento de la Mujer del Mar” to reveal the way in which Ramos Otero’s writing adopts the sign of the feminine as an empowering archetype. These stories make allies of the queer and the feminine in order to reject bourgeois feminism. This brand of feminism does not manage to escape the patriarchal dichotomy and puts the individualist project before a broader decolonizing goal. By posing these female characters of mythical stature as his alter egos, Ramos Otero departs from the frame of reference of subalternity ethnographies in …

How National Culture Influences Individuals’ Subjective Experience With Paradoxical Tensions, Joshua Keller, Erica Wen Chen, Angela K. Y. Leung Jul 2018

How National Culture Influences Individuals’ Subjective Experience With Paradoxical Tensions, Joshua Keller, Erica Wen Chen, Angela K. Y. Leung

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine how national culture influences individuals’ subjective experience of tension when confronting paradoxical demands that arise during their day-to-day organizational experience. The paper further explores two types of paradoxical demands (task-oriented and relational-oriented) and two mediating mechanisms (tolerance for contradictions and harmony enhancement concerns) that exhibit contrary cultural effects.Design/methodology/approach: Drawing from a sample of white-collar workers in China and the USA, the authors first inductively generated scenarios with task-oriented and relational-oriented paradoxical demands and then conducted three studies where participants rated the perceived tension from the scenarios. In Study 1, they examined …

The View From Here: Toward A Sissy Critique, Tyler Monson Jul 2018

The View From Here: Toward A Sissy Critique, Tyler Monson

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation situates 20th- and 21st-century American literary studies within a post-civil rights context that recognizes how narratives of U.S. exceptionalism have been employed in service of U.S. empire through the recognition of some groups of difference over others. I argue that always at each moment of inclusion, the nation-state invokes a rubric of militarized masculinity to ensure and expand its normative power, to increase legitimate violence, to gain new administrative capacities, and to advance U.S. economic and militaristic strength. My term militarized masculinity sounds out an ideology of exceptionalism that transcends the literal boundaries of military spaces and bodies …

STEMPS Faculty Publications

This study explores library and information science (LIS) program websites from a recruitment and marketing standpoint and sheds light on the availability of diversity - related content. LIS and higher education literature suggests that the Internet and program websites are crucial when it comes to prospective students’ graduate school selection. Using Berelson’s (1952) quantitative content analysis technique, the researchers examined faculty profiles, diversity statements, diversity-related courses, funding opportunities, achievements, and student organizations on program websites. The data indicates that, collectively, LIS programs are successful in sharing information on funding as well as highlighting faculty scholarship related to diversity. Greater emphasis …

Examining The Measurement Invariance Of The Mmpi-A-Rf Externalizing Scales Across Korean And American Adolescent Normative Samples, Kristoffer Yong Park Jul 2018

Examining The Measurement Invariance Of The Mmpi-A-Rf Externalizing Scales Across Korean And American Adolescent Normative Samples, Kristoffer Yong Park

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory – Adolescents – Restructured Form (MMPI-A-RF; Archer, Handel, Ben-Porath, & Tellegen, 2016) is a newly developed instrument in personality and psychopathology and has been translated into many different languages, including the Korean language (University of Minnesota Press, 2016). Due to the cultural differences between Korean and American populations, it is important that constructs measured in the MMPI-A-RF are interpretable across cultures. Focusing on the Externalizing Scales, the present study used multiple-group confirmatory factor analysis (MGCFA) to examine the measurement invariance in Korean and American adolescent normative samples. Partially supporting the hypothesis, the results showed that …
