Analysis Of The Gas Production From Marcellus Shale Horizontal Wells Using Decline Curves, Dalal Alsaadoun Jan 2018

Analysis Of The Gas Production From Marcellus Shale Horizontal Wells Using Decline Curves, Dalal Alsaadoun

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Many challenges present themselves when production is being forecasted in ultra-low permeability unconventional reservoir systems. Some of the major challenges are the lack of understanding of the interaction among the fluid flow, the hydraulic fracturing, the reservoir characteristics in these complex systems, and the limited production history. Therefore, the production performance of the shale gas wells over the longer time periods has not been established. A familiar technique for predicting the future production rates, when the only available data are past production rates, is Decline Curve Analysis (DCA). Several DCA methods have been proposed for shale wells, but their application …

Inclusion Of 9 Mm Firearm Type Using Quantitative Class Characteristics, Young Wang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The results of a data set of five models of 9 mm Luger caliber handguns suggest an algorithm such as the square of the Mahalanobis Distance as a step towards the creation of an electronic class characteristic database for cartridge cases to supplement the currently existing General Rifling Characteristic (GRC) database for bullets. The algorithm was validated using both hold-one out cross validation as well as on an entirely independent set of ground truth known cartridge cases which were blindly classified to mimic case work. A method for determining an objective threshold for inclusion onto a list for an investigator …

Developing An Image Capture Specification For Future Building Modifications, Syed Basim Hussain Jan 2018

Developing An Image Capture Specification For Future Building Modifications, Syed Basim Hussain

Construction Management and Engineering

In the construction industry, images taken by cameras have been used to extract information for a number of purposes. However, a review of the literature suggests that there is an absence of specifications regarding the equipment, the method by which the images are to be taken, as well as the method to retrieve and store these images. The purpose of this research is to formulate specifications for capturing images at construction sites to be used later, using an 'appropriate' camera. The research has concluded that any camera available in the market can be used to take these images using the …

The Influence Of Instructional Design Decisions On Student Motivation In Online Courses, Robin E. Youger Jan 2018

The Influence Of Instructional Design Decisions On Student Motivation In Online Courses, Robin E. Youger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The goal of higher education is to educate, train, and motivate people (Hunt, 1998). Typically, best practices and accepted design strategies are used to develop online courses that fulfill the needs of the university, faculty, and student stakeholders. This study examines two methods of instructional design -- the Quality Matters (QM) process, and Keller's ARCS motivational design process -- to understand if instructional design decisions have influence on student motivation in online courses. Quality Matters (QM) offers a well-researched process of designing online courses based on nationally-recognized standards. The QM format provides an ideal objectives-based course design; however, it does …

Response To Vincent P. Pace's Article, 33(3) Conn. J. Int'l Law 361 (2018), Robert J. Klee

Connecticut Journal of International Law

The Trump Administration's misguided decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Accord places the United States alone and apart from the rest of the international community and the global consensus to take meaningful steps to address climate change.' Connecticut is profoundly disappointed that the United States federal government has abdicated its leadership role on climate change-the number one environmental issue of our time. We are also dumbfounded by the Trump Administration's hostility to any energy technology that is not fossil-fuel based-effectively ceding ground to the rest of the world on the development and deployment of clean energy. …

Durability Of Gfrp Composites Under Harsh Environments: Effect Of Ph And Temperature, Maria Martinez De Lahidalga De Lorenzo Jan 2018

Durability Of Gfrp Composites Under Harsh Environments: Effect Of Ph And Temperature, Maria Martinez De Lahidalga De Lorenzo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In recent years, demand for Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites as a substitute of conventional materials has increased because of certain inherent advantages of FRPs over conventional materials such as concrete or steel. However, FRPs are also susceptible to degradation under both physical and chemical aging. To evaluate glass FRP composites aging behavior under harsh environments in a cost-effective manner, accelerated aging data are obtained under controlled lab environments, in short duration, to perform a correlation with data from naturally aged samples. Following the time-temperature superposition principle, the mechanical response in the field in a span of time of 75 …

Enhancing Online Security With Image-Based Captchas, Brian M. Powell Jan 2018

Enhancing Online Security With Image-Based Captchas, Brian M. Powell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Given the data loss, productivity, and financial risks posed by security breaches, there is a great need to protect online systems from automated attacks. Completely Automated Public Turing Tests to Tell Computers and Humans Apart, known as CAPTCHAs, are commonly used as one layer in providing online security. These tests are intended to be easily solvable by legitimate human users while being challenging for automated attackers to successfully complete. Traditionally, CAPTCHAs have asked users to perform tasks based on text recognition or categorization of discrete images to prove whether or not they are legitimate human users. Over time, the efficacy …

The Heroine Sabrina: Dismantling Binaries In A Masque Presented At Ludlow Castle, Taija Kae Noel Jan 2018

The Heroine Sabrina: Dismantling Binaries In A Masque Presented At Ludlow Castle, Taija Kae Noel

English

Sabrina, the heroine of A Masque Presented at Ludlow Castle, is an exemplar of ethical, intellectual, and magical power. Although scholarship has focused on male characters in the masque, I argue that this story is about women who work in alliance, fight for autonomy over their own bodies, rebuke cultural expectations, and claim their identities. Sabrina rescues the Lady from the male villain Comus. She utilizes her intellectual and ethical agency to judge the Lady worthy, then uses her magical powers to undo Comus’ spell. Scholarship overlooks Sabrina’s distinct power in A Masque Presented at Ludlow Castle, but scholarship must …

Three Essays On Public Information And Security Prices., Chen Gu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation includes three essays examining the role of public information in financial markets. The first essay examines informed trading before natural gas inventory announcements. Natural gas futures prices start moving in the “right” direction about 90 minutes before the announcement. The empirical results show that the difference between the median forecast of analysts with high historical forecasting accuracy and the consensus forecast can be used to predict inventory surprises and some of the pre-announcement drift. Because both individual analyst forecasts and consensus are available to Bloomberg subscribers prior to official release time, our results suggest that informed trading before …

Evidence Of Inbreeding And Divergence In The Western Prairie Fringed Orchid (Platanthera Praeclara), Sarah Anne Tennefos Jan 2018

Evidence Of Inbreeding And Divergence In The Western Prairie Fringed Orchid (Platanthera Praeclara), Sarah Anne Tennefos

Environmental and Conservation Sciences

The conversion of grasslands to agriculture land has made the tall grass prairie one of the world’s most endangered ecosystems and has played a key role in the decline of one particular species of rare endangered orchid, Platanthera praeclara (western prairie fringed orchid, WPFO). Loss of genetic diversity, accumulation of mutations, and inbreeding all increase the risk of extinction in endangered species. Through the use of microsatellite markers to characterize allele frequencies in six populations of WPFO, evidence of inbreeding was common and highest at the most extreme northern, southern and eastern populations. Thus, suggesting that in addition to the …

Communicated Sex Roles And Gender Identity Gaps., Janelle Vickers Jan 2018

Communicated Sex Roles And Gender Identity Gaps., Janelle Vickers

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Using Communication Theory of Identity (CTI) and the Bem Sex Role Index (BSRI), this study addresses the potential impact of societally-created, gendered expectations on the satisfaction of emerging adults. Two hundred twenty-nine undergraduates at a large mid-Atlantic university participated in the study by completing an online survey assessing gender, identity, and a relationship with a close other of their choosing. Results replicate previous research using CTI, which suggests that identity gaps relating to gender are dissatisfying. Specifically, gaps at the personal-enacted, personal-relational, and the newly-created personal-personal levels were negatively related to participant satisfaction, and personal-relational gaps were negatively correlated with …

Modern agriculture encounters several challenges these days. There is a vital need for spatial data about plant and weed distributions. Obtaining accurate knowledge of the plants and weeds distribution in the field with manual methods are time-consuming. In this research, image processing programs were developed from the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) digital images to obtain the plant-stand count and weed identification and mapping in the field. Algorithms using pixel-march with search-hands criterion for the plant-stand count and shape-based features for weed identification were developed. Results were found to be accurate in the cropped UAV stitched images (>99 %) in …

The Semantics Of Spanish Compounding: An Analysis Of Nn Compounds In The Parallel Architecture, Luis Miguel Toquero Perez Jan 2018

The Semantics Of Spanish Compounding: An Analysis Of Nn Compounds In The Parallel Architecture, Luis Miguel Toquero Perez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Noun-Noun compounds (NN) are a concatenation of two nouns that function as a single unit both morphosyntactically and semantically. One of the main challenges that a study of NN compounding faces is their semantics, and more precisely, identifying the implied semantic relations that hold between the two elements. One of the most recent frameworks that has been proposed to account for the semantic relations between the modifier and head in NN compounds is Jackendoff's (2009, 2016) basic functions model within the Parallel Architecture framework. In this model, a semantic relation between the head and modifier is established by using an …
