Controlling Relative Humidity Using Glycerin, Juan Martinez
Controlling Relative Humidity Using Glycerin, Juan Martinez
Civil Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
A series of tests were conducted to control relative humidity (RH) using a bubbler system that contained a series of glass jars and glass vials filled with different concentrations of glycerin. The relative humidity within the glass jars was measured. The total time interval for each laboratory test was 48 hours. During the first 24 hours a pump was used to bubble air through the glycerin solution. During the second 24 hours, the pump was turned off, and the RH within the system was monitored within the closed system. Target RH measurements from 100% to a 0% were obtained. The …
The Importance Of Scholarship To Law School Excellence, William E. Nelson
The Importance Of Scholarship To Law School Excellence, William E. Nelson
Fordham Law Review
As we have learned from Dan Coquillette, Bob Kaczorowski, and John Sexton, access to substantial funding is undoubtedly a prerequisite for a law school to enjoy excellence. Funding, that is, is a necessary, but not sufficient condition for excellence. Something else—intellectual vision—is also required.

The Islamic finance industry continues to grow quickly as the appetite for everything, from Sharia-compliant home mortgages and car loans to sophisticated financial products, increases. This growth has triggered an interest in sukuk, bond-like financial instruments. And while the international market for sukuk has long been dominated by foreign issuers and English law, the attraction of a niche market compatible with U.S. federal and international securities laws may propel increased participation by U.S. issuers and investors who wish to transact under U.S. federal and state laws. As with all Islamic financial products, sukuk transactions inherently pose a Sharia compliance risk. …
Reclaiming A Biblical Sexual Ethic: How A Renewed Understanding Of The Doctrine Of The Image Of God Is An Important Response To The Ideas Of The Sexual Revolution And The Self-Esteem Movement, Sarah Stewart
Masters Theses
Sexual ethics have become a large source of debate in modern America and will continue as American sexual mores become more progressive. The church in America also faces the issue of how to respond to issues caused by changes in American sexual ethics. These changes, however, have not been greatly beneficial to society. While debates about sexual ethics are not new, the debate has reemerged in modern society, primarily as the result of two movements, the Sexual Revolution and the Self-esteem Movement. Both of these movements shifted belief in human value away from inherent value, as a result of humans …
Race-Evasiveness Among Camp Staff, S. Cole Perry
Race-Evasiveness Among Camp Staff, S. Cole Perry
Journal of Youth Development
Camp staff have hope that summer camp plays a role in helping youth bridge differences. Educational research, though, raises concerns about preparing youth workers to combat racism (Jupp, Berry, & Lensmire, 2016). This study draws on prior school research and critical Whiteness studies to examine race-evasiveness among camp staff. Grounded theory analysis resulted in two major thematic categories of discursive strategies by which camp staff evaded critical engagement with antiracist discussion. First, camp staff upheld dominant racial understandings by invoking discourses of colorblindness and humanist caring. Second, they prioritized White comfort by neglecting youth of color and employing self-protective emotional …
A Dynamic Policing Simulation Framework, Khan Md Ariful Haque
A Dynamic Policing Simulation Framework, Khan Md Ariful Haque
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Crime is a serious problem to a society, and its costs are an economic burden. With the help of technology and developed tools, law enforcement agencies are making significant efforts to combat crime, so as to create a safer environment for society, both mentally and physically. The dynamic nature of crime and limited police resources often make their efforts challenging. Although there are numerous crime prediction models found in the policing literature, guidelines for policing strategies based on those models are still lacking. Towards addressing this gap, this dissertation constructs a dynamic policing simulation framework based on the concept of …

Cancers infiltrated with T-cells are associated with a higher likelihood of response to PD-1/PD-L1 blockade. Counterintuitively, a correlation between epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related gene expression and T-cell infiltration has been observed across tumor types. Here we demonstrate, using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) urothelial cancer dataset, that although a gene expression-based measure of infiltrating T-cell abundance and EMT-related gene expression are positively correlated, these signatures convey disparate prognostic information. We further demonstrate that non-hematopoietic stromal cells are a major source of EMT-related gene expression in bulk urothelial cancer transcriptomes. Finally, using a cohort of patients with metastatic urothelial cancer treated with …

Recognizing Delirium At End Of Life In The Hospice Setting: A Process Improvement Project, Latonya Roberts
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Despite advancements in health care, hospice registered nurses and medical professionals caring for patients at end of life lack the required knowledge effectively to care for this patient population. Educational gaps contribute to deficiencies. This process improvement project aimed to increase nurses’ and medical staff’s knowledge and recognition of delirium at end of life through the use of a delirium assessment tool and evidenced-based treatment guideline when managing symptoms. Project implementation occurred at a small hospice company with a patient census of 180, utilizing 2 teams of registered nurses, medical doctors, and a nurse practitioner. A 2-hour educational session had …

An annual average of 88,000 deaths in the United States from 2006 to 2010 has been attributed to alcohol misuse, defined as risky or heavy alcohol consumption. Heavy or risky alcohol use for all adults aged 65 and older and for women aged 18 and older is defined as consuming more than 7 drinks per week and/or 3 drinks per day. For men aged 18 to 65 years of age, heavy or risky alcohol use is defined as consuming more than 14 drinks a week and/or 4 drinks a day. Chronic alcohol misuse increases the incidence of heart problems, cognitive …
Implementing Pneumococcal Vaccination Recommendations For Adults Age 19 And Over In A Family Care Clinic, Truc Le
Doctor of Nursing Practice
Pneumococcal vaccines are essential to children and adults. Having pneumococcal vaccines not only prevents pneumococcal infections but can also potentially lessen the severity of the disease. There are many scholarly articles attesting the herd effect in adults who received pneumococcal vaccines. Therefore, the purpose of this quality improvement project was to raise awareness of the pneumococcal vaccine and increase the vaccination rate in a primary care clinic in Texas. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s pneumococcal vaccination schedule was utilized as guide for vaccine administration. The staff and provider were educated on screening, documenting, and administering the pneumococcal vaccine …

Anemia Management For Patients Receiving Peritoneal Dialysis, Kenisha Marajah
Doctor of Nursing Practice
The purpose of this quality improvement project was to develop an anemia management evidence-based intervention for patients receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD) and to educate staff on implementation of the anemia management protocol in a PD clinic in a southwestern county in Texas. Anemia is a common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD) resulting from the inability of the kidneys to produce erythropoietin needed for red blood cell production. Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents such as Aranesp or Epogen may be administered to dialysis patients to stimulate erythropoiesis in the presence of kidney disease. Iron storage and iron availability remains imperative in effectively stimulating …

Bilateral Sternocleidomastoid Variant With Six Distinct Insertions Along The Superior Nuchal Line., Graham Dupont, Joe Iwanaga, Juan J Altafulla, Stefan Lachkar, Rod J Oskouian, R Shane Tubbs
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Anatomical variations of the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) have been observed to occupy multiple origins and insertion points and have supernumerary heads, sometimes varying in thickness. During routine dissection, a SCM was observed to have six distinct insertions that interface with the course of the superior nuchal line, ending at the midline, bilaterally. This variation was also seen to receive innervation from the accessory nerve as well as the great auricular nerve. To our knowledge, this variant of supernumerary insertions and nerve innervations has not yet been reported. These variants may pose as problematic during surgical approaches to the upper neck …

Universities are charged with educating students from diverse backgrounds, including ELL students, nontraditional students, military students, first generation college students, and students with disabilities. In order to meet the wide variety of learning needs and abilities in the college classroom, teachers must find innovative methods for reaching this diverse population of students. One potential solution is Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Through instructional and assessment strategies that address the “why”, how”, and “what” of learning, the UDL approach ensures that all students can learn. The research regarding the concept of using UDL in the college classroom is minimal, but shows …

Striking A Balance: An Exploration Of Staff-Camper Relationship Formation, Rachel Rubin, Matthew Hagler, Samantha Burton, Jean Rhodes
Journal of Youth Development
Previous research highlights a range of positive developmental outcomes associated with attending summer camp. Close staff-camper relationships likely contribute to positive development, but little is known about how these bonds are formed. The current study utilized constructivist thematic analysis of interviews with campers (n = 8) and staff members (n = 7) at an overnight summer camp to examine the factors and processes that promote or inhibit close staff-camper relationship formation. The main themes identified were striking a balance, level of experience, and relationship-promoting behaviors. Staff members experience apparent paradoxes in their roles (e.g., relating to campers while also exerting …

Speech and motor deficits are highly prevalent (>70%) in individuals with the 600 kb BP4-BP5 16p11.2 deletion; however, the mechanisms that drive these deficits are unclear, limiting our ability to target interventions and advance treatment. This study examined fundamental aspects of speech motor control in participants with the 16p11.2 deletion. To assess capacity for control of voice, we examined how accurately and quickly subjects changed the pitch of their voice within a trial to correct for a transient perturbation of the pitch of their auditory feedback. When compared to controls, 16p11.2 deletion carriers show an over-exaggerated pitch compensation response …

Review: Edges And Rushes Of Minnesota: The Complete Guide To Species Identification, Welby R. Smith; Photography By Richard Haug, Edward S. Dekeyser
The Prairie Naturalist
Even the most seasoned individual with a plant identification background can relate to the difficulty of identifying sedges and rushes to the species level. Historically, one has had to rely on dichotomous keys to identify a sedge or rush species in the field. After hours of frustration, a person ends up collecting the plant and, if lucky, bringing the collection back to a herbarium where it can be compared to known specimens. I have been collecting and identifying sedge and rush species for over 25 years, and author Welby Smith along with photographer Richard Haug have published what I believe …
