This article aims at describing the ability of 48 students of physics education in determining the distance traveled, average speed, and acceleration of position functions. To achieve these objectives, three reasoned multiple choice questions were used. The question is part of 20 standard test questions that are used to measure understanding of student mechanics concepts in the Basic Physics course. The study was conducted using a survey method. Data were obtained from student responses in answering questions. Claims of student understanding were seen from the choice of answer options and reasons given. The results of the study indicate that students …

Jurnal Pendidikan Sains
The study was conducted by giving an identification test on Newton’s laws of motion application in the form of multiple choice questions to students who were enrolled in Mechanics and Basic Physics Courses. The analysis was based on student answers and the level of student confidence in the correctness of the answers in quantitative descriptive and qualitative. The results of the analysis of identification tests were reinforced by thinking map of Newton’s laws of student presentation and followed up by interviews. The results show that students’ conceptions of motion and Newton’s laws is insufficient. Prospective teacher students are required to …

Using The Business Classroom To Help Fe Y Alegría- Bolivia Schools With Analytics And Pattern Visualizatio, Kathleen Campbell Garwood, Joao Neiva De Figueiredo, Hayley F. Miles, Miguel Angel Marca Barrientos
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
This article describes the analytical support a Saint Joseph’s University (SJU) data mining class provided over the past three academic years to Fe y Alegría in Bolivia (FyAB), a Jesuit-sponsored institution dedicated to the education of the poor and looking for a feasible model that could help them identify which students and schools have the most need. SJU undergraduates, working without viable socio-economic household income information for each student in the database, had to be creative in assisting FyAB using only survey data provided by Bolivian school-age pupils. Working in consultation with FyAB school representatives, their goal for each iteration …

Little Islands Recording Global Events: Late Quaternary Sea Level History And Paleozoogeography Of Santa Barbara And Anacapa Islands, Channel Islands National Park, California, Daniel R. Muhs, Lindsey T. Groves
Western North American Naturalist
Marine terraces are common on the Pacific Coast of North America and record interglacial high-sea stands superimposed on either stable or tectonically rising crustal blocks. Despite many years of study of these landforms in southern California, little work on terraces has been conducted on the two smallest of the California Channel Islands, Santa Barbara Island (SBI) and Anacapa Island (ANA). Presented here are new field and laboratory data on the ages, paleontology, and sea level history of marine terraces of these two islands. On both islands, the lowest marine terraces have shoreline angle elevations of ~11 m above sea level. …

‘Such Editorial Liberties’: Scott And The Textual Afterlives Of Thomas The Rhymer, David Selfe
‘Such Editorial Liberties’: Scott And The Textual Afterlives Of Thomas The Rhymer, David Selfe
Studies in Scottish Literature
This essay discusses from his Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border (1802 etc) Walter Scott's version of the ballad "Thomas the Rhymer" (or "True Thomas") tracing the ballad's history within the social context of its reception, and then comparing Scott’s version with the orally-transmitted version "Thomas Rhymer and the Queen of Elfland",written down by Anna Gordon Brown in 1800, for differences both in wording and in punctuation choices as the “apologetic apostrophe,” to suggest how such textual traces show the changing relationship between textual form and textual function. [essay still in final proof stage]
Croftangry’S Castle And The House Of Usher: Scott, Poe, And ‘Decayed And Lingering Exotics’, George S. Williams
Croftangry’S Castle And The House Of Usher: Scott, Poe, And ‘Decayed And Lingering Exotics’, George S. Williams
Studies in Scottish Literature
Discusses Poe's reading of Walter Scott, specifically through parallels of plot, setting, phrasing and imagery, between Scott's Chronicles of the Canongate, 1st series (1827) and Poe's short story "The Fall of the House of Usher" (1839), arguing that the two works share psychological preoccupations, also present more widely in the prose works of the writers.
Resistance To Neocolonialism In Contemporary Chinese Literary Theory, Zeng Jun
Resistance To Neocolonialism In Contemporary Chinese Literary Theory, Zeng Jun
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Resistance to Neocolonialism in Contemporary Chinese Literary Theory" Jun ZENG claims that the introduction of Western Literary Theory in the past forty years of China's reform and opening up was carried out under the background of neo-colonialism. "Western imagination" in the discourse of contemporary Chinese literary theory was an important aspect of the strategy of cultural resistance under the overwhelming influence of Western neocolonialism. Contemporary Chinese literary theory no longer simply regards Western literary theory in the twentieth century as a bourgeois literary ideology; instead, it adopts a "de-ideological" attitude to return to the issues of literature, …
Neocolonialism In Translating China, Guoqiang Qiao
Neocolonialism In Translating China, Guoqiang Qiao
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Neocolonialism in Translating China" Guoqiang Qiao analyzes the neocolonial phenomenon that occurs in the process of Chinese literature's "walking-out." Taking examples from Howard Goldblatt's translation and neocolonial ideas that Goldblatt advanced in his essays, interviews and speeches and those Chinese writers, critics and professors who practice self-colonization, he analyzes their neocolonialism with the challenging concepts of neocolonialism and self-colonization and thus aims to cope with the phenomenon of colonization and self-colonization in the area of Chinese literature's "walking-out."

Revisiting 'Seventeen–Year Literature' (1949-1966) In China From A Neocolonial Perspective, Tian Zhang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Revisiting Seventeen–Year Literature' (1949-1966) in China from a Neocolonial Perspective" Tian Zhang surveys the "Seventeen-Year Literature" (1949-1966) from a neocolonial perspective. It reviews the internal and external factors of anxiety faced by Chinese during the period of seventeen years since the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The seventeen years witnessed a stress on and flourishing of the proletarian socialist literature of the people, by the people and for the people. The seventeen-year literature, on its way to smashing the old system, represents the trend of Chinese literature of the time and the extension …
The End Of The Nobel Era And The Reconstruction Of The World Republic Of Letters, Guohua Zhu, Yonghua Tang
The End Of The Nobel Era And The Reconstruction Of The World Republic Of Letters, Guohua Zhu, Yonghua Tang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "The End of the Nobel Era and the Reconstruction of the World Republic of Letters" Guohua Zhu and Yonghua Tang critically examine mechanisms of cultural hegemony associated with the Nobel Prize in Literature from a neocolonial lens. Borrowing from Casanova's idea of the "World Republic of Letters" and its attentiveness to geopolitics, the essay proceeds to reconstruct the dialectical relations between the nation and the world. It does so, in the first place, by documenting and analyzing the process of negotiation and bargaining entailed in the construction of global cultural hegemony and thereby examine the functions and …
