Insulting Words: "They Are Animals!", Carolyn A. Ristau
Insulting Words: "They Are Animals!", Carolyn A. Ristau
Animal Sentience
As Chapman & Huffman state, creating divisive human categories has rationalized atrocities committed against the “other.” Labeling neighboring warring villagers as “animals” is considered a despicable insult. Yet contemporary scientific views of many animals grant them thinking and conscious faculties, and the capacity for impressive achievements, many unattainable by humans. Robots, too, can accomplish many similar feats. But the essential reason we must protect animals is not because of their admirable abilities, but their capacity for consciousness, for suffering. Robots are not conscious. Participants in the human-animal debate should not complain about changing criteria for determining human uniqueness. New and …

Synthesis Of Precursors To Non-Isocyanate Polyurethanes, Manqing Wei
Synthesis Of Precursors To Non-Isocyanate Polyurethanes, Manqing Wei
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Biobased diamines are excellent precursors for the synthesis of non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs). We have prepared several biobased diamines using three different reactions for their synthesis. In the first method, we have carried out chain elongation of cellulose-derived 2,5-diformylfuran by the Henry reaction followed by reduction of the nitroalkene. Yields of the key step: Hantzsch Ester reduction, were 70-80%. Method two involves the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of furfurylamine with different ketones under acidic conditions. Yields of large-scale alkylation reaction were 60-77%. In method three, we combined the Henry reaction and Friedel-Crafts alkylation techniques to access diamines from hemicellulose-derived furfural. These diamines can …

The emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (ARB) is currently seen as one of the major threats to human and animal public health. Veterinary use of antimicrobials in both developing and developed countries is many-fold greater than their use in human medicine and is an important determinant in selection of ARB. In light of the recently outlined National Plan Against Antimicrobial Resistance in Chile, our findings on antimicrobial use in salmon aquaculture and their impact on the environment and human health are highly relevant. Ninety-five percent of tetracyclines, phenicols and quinolones imported into Chile between 1998 and 2015 were for …

Psychodynamic Psychiatrists' Experiences Of Being Stalked, Douglas Ingram
Psychodynamic Psychiatrists' Experiences Of Being Stalked, Douglas Ingram
NYMC Faculty Publications
Despite the estimated 15% likelihood that a psychiatrist will become the victim of stalking, there is little formal recognition of its prevalence or its impact on well-being. Through narrative accounts, ten psychiatrists with psychodynamic orientations speak of their experiences including how each managed the anxieties consequent to stalking. These include a variety of adaptive psychic operations as well as concrete actions to curtail stalking.
In Defense Of Territorial Jurisdiction, Cody Jacobs
In Defense Of Territorial Jurisdiction, Cody Jacobs

As the story is traditionally told, the minimum contacts test introduced in International Shoe v Washington freed personal jurisdiction from the dark age of territorialism and gave courts the flexibility to expand the scope of personal jurisdiction to keep pace with modern society. While scholars have critiqued the minimum contacts test on a number of grounds, the narrative that the Territorial Model was inherently problematic—and that Shoe was a step in the right direction— has gone largely unchallenged.
This Article challenges that narrative and argues for a return to the Territorial Model. While Shoe is traditionally cast as a step …
From Loving V. Virginia To Washington V. Davis: The Erosion Of The Supreme Court's Equal Protection Intent Analysis, Angela Onwuachi-Willig
From Loving V. Virginia To Washington V. Davis: The Erosion Of The Supreme Court's Equal Protection Intent Analysis, Angela Onwuachi-Willig
Faculty Scholarship
In 1967, the United States Supreme Court issued an opinion that contained its most searing and explicit condemnation of white supremacy: Loving v. Virginia. At issue in Loving was the constitutionality of a statutory scheme in the state of Virginia that prohibited marriages between individuals solely on the basis of race. Among other things, provisions in this statutory scheme punished intermarriage between a "white person" and a "colored person," meaning not only Blacks, but also Asian Americans and American Indians who did not fall under the Pocahontas Exception. The provisions also punished evasion of the state's interracial marriage ban by …
Body Cameras And The Path To Redeem Privacy Law, Woodrow Hartzog
Body Cameras And The Path To Redeem Privacy Law, Woodrow Hartzog
Faculty Scholarship
From a privacy perspective, the movement towards police body cameras seems ominous. The prospect of a surveillance device capturing massive amounts of data concerning people’s most vulnerable moments is daunting. These concerns are compounded by the fact that there is little consensus and few hard rules on how and for whom these systems should be built and used. But in many ways, this blank slate is a gift. Law and policy makers are not burdened by the weight of rules and technologies created in a different time for a different purpose. These surveillance and data technologies will be modern. Many …
Are Privacy Laws Deficient?, Woodrow Hartzog
Are Privacy Laws Deficient?, Woodrow Hartzog
Faculty Scholarship
Privacy law around the world is deficient because it ignores design. Lawmakers have attempted to establish limits on the collection, use, and distribution of personal information. But they have largely overlooked the power of design. They have discounted the role that design plays in facilitating the conduct and harm privacy law is meant to prevent. Design pitches and picks privacy winners and losers, with people as data subjects and surveillance objects often on the losing side.
The Case Against Idealising Control, Woodrow Hartzog
The Case Against Idealising Control, Woodrow Hartzog
Faculty Scholarship
Seemingly everyone, from scholars, industry, and privacy advocates to lawmakers, regulators, and judges seems to have settled on the idea that the key to privacy is control over personal information. But in practice, there is only so much a person can do. Control is far too precious and finite of a concept to meaningfully scale. It will never work for personal data mediated by technology.
Now we have an entire empire of data protection built around the crumbling edifice of control. The idealisation of control in modern data protection regimes like the GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive creates a pursuit …
Conceptualizing The Urban Commons: The Place Of Business Improvement Districts In City Governance, Alexandra Flynn
Conceptualizing The Urban Commons: The Place Of Business Improvement Districts In City Governance, Alexandra Flynn
All Faculty Publications
Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) are self-taxed organizations that are comprised of businesses and property owners, are approved by city governments, and spend funds to improve profitability within certain neighbourhood boundaries. BID governance structures can also include neighbourhood residents and city councillors as voting or non-voting members. Numerous scholars have written about the role of BIDs in city governance, including the extent to which they improve or undermine inclusivity and accountability. This paper focuses on a related question that has not yet been deeply analysed in legal scholarship: can BIDs be considered a form of urban commons? The term ‘urban commons’ …

The study of genetics is fundamental to understanding the function and evolution of complex phenotypic traits in animals. Nowadays behavioral studies are focusing on genetics as a key to understanding behavioral variability. In this PhDdissertation I study the effect of a genetic system, the melanocortin system, on the behavioral and morphological polymorphism of the white-throated sparrow ( Zonotrichia albicollis ). I examined the behavioral differences in a wintering population in Indiana, and a breeding population in Upstate New York. I studied the genetic differences through protein assays and gene sequencing on the behaviorally tested individuals. Finally, I assessed the gene …
Theoretical And Empirical Studies On Thelife Sciences And Evolution Of Predator-Prey Signals, Divya Ramesh
Theoretical And Empirical Studies On Thelife Sciences And Evolution Of Predator-Prey Signals, Divya Ramesh
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Prey animals are known to communicate information about risk in the environment using various signals. Seen across species, these signals are often directed to other prey individuals, but some signals are also directed towards predators and are called pursuit-deterrent signals. These deterrence signals are paradoxical in that the prey performs seemingly high-risk behaviour, such as approaching the predator or increasing its own conspicuousness and potentially reducing its chance of escape, in an attempt to discourage the predator from attacking. This has motivated considerable theoretical and empirical work, however, there are still gaps in our understanding of pursuit-deterrence. Existing theory is …

Medical school education should foster creativity by enabling students to become 'makers' who prototype and design. Healthcare professionals and students experience pain points on a daily basis, but are not given the tools, training, or opportunity to help solve them in new, potentially better ways. The student physician of the future will learn these skills through collaborative workshops and having dedicated 'innovation time.' This pre-clinical curriculum would incorporate skills centered on (1) Digital Technology and Small Electronics (DTSE), (2) Textiles and Medical Materials (TMM), and (3) Rapid Prototyping Technologies (RPT). Complemented by an on-campus makerspace, students will be able to …

A Novel Biosimulation Task Trainer For The Deliberate Practice Of Resuscitative Hysterotomy., Lawrence Lau, Dimitrios Papanagnou, Elaine Smith, Crystal Waters, Elizabeth Teixeira, Xiao Chi Zhang
Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers
Resuscitative hysterotomy is a daunting and rarely performed procedure in the emergency department (ED). Given the paucity of clinical exposure to this intervention, resuscitative hysterotomy is an ideal opportunity for simulation-mediated deliberate practice. The authors propose a novel training program using a homegrown, realistic, simulation device as a means to practice resuscitative hysterotomy. Two high-fidelity, tissue-based task-trainer models were constructed and tested on a convenience sample of 14 emergency medicine (EM) residents. The simulated human placenta, bladder, amniotic sac, and uterus were constructed through the use of porcine skin, porcine stomach, transparent plastic bag, Foley tubing, and squid mantle, all …

The 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina passed in August of 2015, which reminded many individuals of the devastation and destruction it left behind as well as the increased helping behaviors in the aftermath. Disaster research typically focuses on professional helpers (e.g., first responders including firemen, police officers, paramedics and military personnel). There is less research that examines the helping behaviors of disaster survivors or the average citizens who help in the immediate aftermath of an event. There is limited research that examines the relationship between the type of helping behavior, the demographics of the helper, and positive and negative outcomes …
