Urban Animals: Gis Analysis Of Stray Canines And Felines In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Courtney Brock Jun 2018

Urban Animals: Gis Analysis Of Stray Canines And Felines In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Courtney Brock

Geography ETDs

While human influence and progress has shaped the cityscape of Albuquerque, New Mexico, many stray animals also consider this city to be their home. Albuquerque’s Animal Welfare Department holds a human responsibility over these urban animals and their habitat displacement, requiring them to either be registered and owned or euthanized. Although animal rights are a topic continually in debate, the habitat choices made by stray animals are rarely questioned, due to anthropocentrism in the city’s structure and laws.

Through observational field research with Albuquerque’s Animal Welfare Officers, stray animal locations were collected throughout the city for one week in July …

Identifying The Personal And Perceived Organizational Characteristics Associated With Job Satisfaction Among Juvenile Probation Staff, Julie M. Krupa Jun 2018

Identifying The Personal And Perceived Organizational Characteristics Associated With Job Satisfaction Among Juvenile Probation Staff, Julie M. Krupa

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Satisfied employees are essential to an organization, as they are the primary means for meeting organizational needs. Employees who are more satisfied at work are less likely to leave their job or think about leaving their job, less likely to feel burnt out or stressed, and perform better at work. Job satisfaction is particularly important among criminal justice agencies, specifically probation agencies which largely rely on personnel for the supervision and rehabilitation of offenders. Yet the correlates of job satisfaction among juvenile probation staff are largely unknown. Theory suggests that organizational characteristics are influential predictors of job satisfaction across occupational …

"I'Ve Never Had That": An Exploration Of How Children Construct Belonging And Inclusion Within A Foodscape, Olivia M. Fleming Jun 2018

"I'Ve Never Had That": An Exploration Of How Children Construct Belonging And Inclusion Within A Foodscape, Olivia M. Fleming

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

American consumer culture is often depicted as competitive and based on the acquisition of capital and status through goods or experiences. To date, researchers commonly exclude children from this conversation and therefore fail to wholly assess the impact consumer culture has on one’s choices or behavior. This study adds to a growing body of literature exploring the experiences and agency of children within the broader consumer culture by examining how marginalized children from a lower socioeconomic background use food as a resource for belonging among peers. Observation and interview data collected during designated lunch and snack times at a summer …

Objectives: To combine social genomics with cultural approaches to expand understandings of the somatic health dynamics of online gaming, including in the controversial nosological construct of internet gaming disorder (IGD).

Methods: In blood samples from 56 U.S. gamers, we examined expression of the conserved transcriptional response to adversity (CTRA), a leukocyte gene expression profile activated by chronic stress. We compared positively engaged and problem gamers, as identified by an ethnographically developed measure, the Positive and Negative Gaming Experiences Scale (PNGE-42), and also by a clinically derived IGD scale (IGDS-SF9).

Results: CTRA profiles showed a clear relationship with PNGE-42, with a …

Ripple Effects Of The Belo Monte Dam: A Syndemic Approach To Addressing Health Impacts For The Downstream Community Of Gurupá, Cynthia A. Pace

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the public health impacts of a large dam project on a downstream community using the framework of Syndemic Theory. The particular focus is the Belo Monte Dam, located in the Brazilian Amazon, and its impact on the community of Gurupá, Pará. At the present time the Belo Monte Dam, which is nearing completion, stands out in scale as being the world’s third largest dam complex. Gurupá is a community well known (and well-studied) in the social science literature as Amazon Town. The aims of this study are to assess the pre-existing public health of Gurupá, as well …

Madden-Julian Oscillation Relationships With Cool Season Cyclogenesis, Daily Precipitation, And Cool Season Severe Weather Frequencies In The Gulf Of Mexico Region, Stephen Paul Caparotta Jun 2018

Madden-Julian Oscillation Relationships With Cool Season Cyclogenesis, Daily Precipitation, And Cool Season Severe Weather Frequencies In The Gulf Of Mexico Region, Stephen Paul Caparotta

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Tropical cyclone variability in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) has been the focus of a considerable amount of research. Variability on both interannual scales, related to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and on subseasonal scales, related to the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), is well documented. By contrast, very little research exists on the relationships between the MJO and cool season, non-tropical cyclones in the GoM.

The MJO influence on cool season (October-March) cyclogenesis in the GoM variability is explored here. Additionally, daily precipitation variability and cool season severe weather variability is examined for areas near and just inland of the GoM. …

Is The Montessori Method A Solution To Improve Public Education? Comparing Two Pedagogical Models In Urban Schools, Iwona Beata Franczak Jun 2018

Is The Montessori Method A Solution To Improve Public Education? Comparing Two Pedagogical Models In Urban Schools, Iwona Beata Franczak

Theses and Dissertations

Education is one of the most important social institutions that can improve quality of life. While our schools, ostensibly, provide for equal education for all, they differ in their curricula and resources that ultimately impact the quality of learning experiences. Distinguished educational organizations emphasize the need to implement our curricula with constructivist pedagogy. Montessori is a holistic educational model that embraces this approach. While studies show that Montessori methods provide positive outcomes for students, these studies are largely limited to performance of students attending private schools. The purpose of this work is to examine the effectiveness of public conventional and …

A New Terrestrial Palaeoenvironmental Record From The Bering Land Bridge And Context For Human Dispersal, Mj Wooller, É Saulnier-Talbot, Ba Potter, S Belmecheri, Et Al

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

© 2018 The Authors. Palaeoenvironmental records from the now-submerged Bering Land Bridge (BLB) covering the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to the present are needed to document changing environments and connections with the dispersal of humans into North America. Moreover, terrestrially based records of environmental changes are needed in close proximity to the re-establishment of circulation between Pacific and Atlantic Oceans following the end of the last glaciation to test palaeo-climate models for the high latitudes. We present the first terrestrial temperature and hydrologic reconstructions from the LGM to the present from the BLB’s south-central margin. We find that the timing …

Underlying Morality In Schneewittchen: A Fairy Tale For Adults, Maria Ardanova Jun 2018

Underlying Morality In Schneewittchen: A Fairy Tale For Adults, Maria Ardanova

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Abstract: Schneewittchen (Snow White) is a well-known 19th century fairy tale by the Grimm Brothers. What is not known to everyone is that Schneewittchen and many of other Grimms’ fairy tales that were first published in 1812 were not intended for children. This fairy tale is about a young girl named Schneewittchen whose vain stepmother tries to kill her because she is more beautiful than her. On three different occasions an attempt on Schneewittchen’s life is made until she finally succumbs to a poisoned apple. Only upon arrival of a prince, the girl is resurrected back to life. To …

Engaged Participant Observation: An Integrative Approach To Qualitative Field Research For Practitioner-Scholars, Daniel Robey, Wallace T.F Taylor Jun 2018

Engaged Participant Observation: An Integrative Approach To Qualitative Field Research For Practitioner-Scholars, Daniel Robey, Wallace T.F Taylor

Engaged Management ReView

Abstract

Participant observation is an appropriate research method for engaged practitioner-scholars seeking in-depth insights available from qualitative field research. Conventional approaches to participant observation include ethnography and action research. However, conventional approaches were originally developed with the assumption that the roles of practitioner and scholar are separate. We propose a new approach, engaged participant observation, which recognizes the integration of research and practice roles. We illustrate the application of engaged participant observation, and its special demands, through a completed executive doctoral dissertation conducted by second author and supervised by the first author. We address the specific tensions and demands …

Seeds Of Complexity: An Archaeobotanical Study Of Incipient Social Complexity At Late Chalcolithic Çadır Höyük, Turkey, Madelynn Von Baeyer

Doctoral Dissertations

Çadır Höyük, a mounded site on the north central Anatolian plateau occupied almost continuously from the Middle Chalcolithic through the Byzantine periods (5200 B.C.E.–1300 C.E.) yielded over 460 m2 of excavated LC remains. This period witnessed rapid cultural and environmental change providing an opportunity to examine how populations react. Archaeobotany, the study of the relationship between ancient plants and people, is an ideal tool to examine how populations reacted due to plants’ direct relationship with the environment and the fact that plant use can be controlled at both the household and state level.

This study presents data from 60 …

A Recusa De Marx Da Teoria Do Valor, David Harvey, Carine Botelho Previatti Jun 2018

A Recusa De Marx Da Teoria Do Valor, David Harvey, Carine Botelho Previatti

Publications and Research

Constructing An Approach To Identify Service Design Narratives: Findings Of An Automated Text Analysis, Mauricio Manhaes Jun 2018

Constructing An Approach To Identify Service Design Narratives: Findings Of An Automated Text Analysis, Mauricio Manhaes

ServDes Conference Series

Over the last two decades, service design has steadily attracted adopters from both practitioner and academic realms. The diverse origins of these adopters pose challenges for the further advancement of the discipline. To address one of those challenges, this text investigates the use of an automated text analysis technique to explore the possibility to identify discursive elements of service design practitioners’ narrative to address organizational change. The author presents results of an automated text analysis of textual responses to a survey that reveal the main topics associated with 9 service design practitioners’ approaches to 5 different scenarios. These findings identify …

The Future Of Visual Communication Design Is Almost Invisible Or Why Skills In Visual Aesthetics Are Important To Service Design, Mark Roxburgh, Jemimah Irvin Jun 2018

The Future Of Visual Communication Design Is Almost Invisible Or Why Skills In Visual Aesthetics Are Important To Service Design, Mark Roxburgh, Jemimah Irvin

ServDes Conference Series

Over the past 20 years there has been an increase in post-secondary visual communication education in Australia while the growth of the industry itself has been low, meaning an increasing number of graduates compete for a limited pool of jobs . The use of visualisation in human centered and service design approaches provides alternative employment opportunities for these graduates. This paper presents a case study of a visual communication honors research project that is indicative of those opportunities and the potential benefits of having highly skilled visual practitioners involved in human centered and service design processes. Furthermore, we argue that …

Digital Methods For Service Design Experimenting With Data-Driven Frameworks, Roberta Tassi, Agata Brilli, Donato Ricci Jun 2018

Digital Methods For Service Design Experimenting With Data-Driven Frameworks, Roberta Tassi, Agata Brilli, Donato Ricci

ServDes Conference Series

From logs and information left in online spaces to data points self-generated by connected devices, digital traces have become more and more diffused over the past years. Along with some big-data approaches, Digital Methods of research - treating the actual content of users’ manifestation online (i.e. tweets, Instagram pictures, comments) - offer the opportunity to better understand people and behaviours through their online activities. This paper investigates how Digital Methods can be repurposed as a full-fledged approach for the Service Design practice, by offering a method to outline service design frameworks from a corpus of web data. These quantitative methods, …

The Designer As Agent Of Community, Thomas Østergaard Jun 2018

The Designer As Agent Of Community, Thomas Østergaard

ServDes Conference Series

A “changing paradigm” with a focus on design for social innovation (SI) has emerged over the last decade. (DESIS, 2012) The title of this article refers to a perception of design schools and design students as potential “agents of sustainable change” adding new design-domains to the existing traditional design domains. (Chick, 2012, Emilson, 2010, Manzini, 2008, 2012, 2014). The study finds it is hard for the design-students to establish their “roles” as designers and have a natural “authority” working in complex and time-limited process’. The paper produces recommendations for other educators in terms of preparing, planning and doing a SD …

Design Thinking For Interior And Spatial Design: A Case Study Within Politecnico Di Milano, Pham Tu Ngoc, Davide Fassi Jun 2018

Design Thinking For Interior And Spatial Design: A Case Study Within Politecnico Di Milano, Pham Tu Ngoc, Davide Fassi

ServDes Conference Series

The contemporary state of Interior Design education is being affected by changes in the professional realm that requires more and more a user/community-centered design to prevent failure in the use phase and to increase the citizen participation in designing their own city-environment. The modern design curriculum is structured to educate students who will go into the field and serve clients and employers effectively and also can lead the market as a change-maker (Foti, 2004). Within the School and Department of Design at the Politecnico di Milano, the POLIMI DESIS Lab has been developing some innovative interdisciplinary programs, crossing the area …

Dance Of Designing: Rethinking Position, Relation And Movement In Service Design, Shana Agid, Yoko Akama Jun 2018

Dance Of Designing: Rethinking Position, Relation And Movement In Service Design, Shana Agid, Yoko Akama

ServDes Conference Series

Despite the recognised need for service design (SD) to understand the complexity in which it intervenes, we are concerned with its desire to fix dynamic configurations through a dominant instrumentalized worldview. We critique the journey map – an iconic method in SD – as one illustration of this fixing tendency in order to highlight how nuanced details are sometimes designed out and argue why such omission is ethical and political. In contrast, following feminist theory, we ground our accounts of practice to argue that service ecologies are situated and continually emergent, constituted by the changing configuration of various things. Instead …

The Act Of Giving – Sur. A Service For Sharing And Co-Producing Gifts, Giulia Bencini, Kuno Prey, Alvise Mattozzi

ServDes Conference Series

Sur is the prototype of a relational service for gift production. Sur is aimed at articulating, nourishing and strengthening relationships between the giver and the receiver of the gift. The co-production of personalised gifts is supervised and guided by a designer and supported by a network of crafts(wo)men-makers. Sur provides the opportunity not only to reflect upon the issue “sharing and collaborating”, but also, more in general, upon the role of gifts within services and especially within relational services.

Service Designers, Unite! Identifying Shared Concerns Among Multidisciplinary Perspectives On Service Design, Maíra Prestes Joly, Jorge Teixeira, Lia Patrício, Daniela Sangiorgi Jun 2018

Service Designers, Unite! Identifying Shared Concerns Among Multidisciplinary Perspectives On Service Design, Maíra Prestes Joly, Jorge Teixeira, Lia Patrício, Daniela Sangiorgi

ServDes Conference Series

Service Design is a multidisciplinary approach that asks for further research to be better integrated. This article contributes to bridging this gap by identifying shared concerns among multidisciplinary perspectives on Service Design. A qualitative study involving six focus groups was conducted on international Service Design research centers. Results show the service system concept as an abstraction that supports integrating multidisciplinary perspectives and their contributions to Service Design, by identifying shared concerns across different levels: (a) at an individual-actor level, the shared concern of an actor-centered approach; (b) at an organizational service delivery system level, the shared focus on processes and …
