Bodystorming: Lessons Learnt From Its Use On A Service Design Undergraduate Discipline, Aguinaldo Dos Santos, Aline Müller Garcia, Milena Carneiro Alves, Emanuela Lima Silveira

ServDes Conference Series

This article explores the use of Bodystorming on the classroom, presenting the results of a case study on a discipline carried out at Federal University of Paraná, Brazil. Bodystorming could be defined as a technique wherein designers and other stakeholders use their bodily expression to create or represent ideas about the interactions and configurations around a given experience. The paper compares this case study with key guidelines and heuristics identified on the literature, pointing suggestions for other lecturers interested on adopting the tool on the classroom.

Integrating Empathy And Lived Experience Through Co-Creation In Service Design, Josina Vink, Anna-Sophie Oertzen Jun 2018

Integrating Empathy And Lived Experience Through Co-Creation In Service Design, Josina Vink, Anna-Sophie Oertzen

ServDes Conference Series

While empathy is often hailed as a central aspect of service design, there is a growing acknowledgement of the risks associated with an over-reliance on empathy in design processes. As such, there is increasing recognition of the need to integrate lived experience—the direct, first-hand perception of a relevant situation, condition, or identity in an everyday context. This paper reviews existing literature related to empathy and lived experience in co-creation, with particular attention to the associated risks of amplifying one over the other. From this literature, we highlight two different manifestations of the relationship between empathy and lived experience: “I—It” and …

Service Design Principles For Organizational Well-Being: Improving The Employee Experience Through Design Thinking, Fabiola Bertolotti, Marco Di Norcia, Matteo Vignoli

ServDes Conference Series

The aim of this paper is to link Service Design to organizational well-being and propose a set of design principles that can be adopted by both designers and managers responsible for the design of organizational services that aim at improving employees' well-being. Through a qualitative study, we conducted a cross-context analysis of well-being initiatives developed in three companies operating in different industries. By applying a science-based design perspective approach, we were able to derive a set of seven design principles. We highlight the importance of including these principles in the process of designing services in organizational contexts using Design Thinking, …

Weaving The Threads: Service Innovation With Textile Artisan Communities, Francesco Mazzarella, Val Mitchell, Andrew May, Carolina Escobar-Tello

ServDes Conference Series

This paper reports on a participatory case study conducted for a doctoral research project, investigating how service design can be used to activate textile artisan communities to transition towards a sustainable future. Using multiple service design and co-design methods, a meaningful intervention was activated within the context of a textile artisan community in Cape Town (South Africa). The service designer elicited tacit knowledge into compelling narratives and facilitated a process of making sense of sustainable futures. As a result, the artisans joined together as a community, with the common purpose of sharing information throughout the supply chain and making it …

Organizational Correlates Of Police Deviance: A Statewide Analysis Of Misconduct In Arizona, 2000-2011, Jessica Huff, Michael D. White, Scott H. Decker

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Purpose

Many examinations of police misconduct involve case study methodologies applied to a single agency, or a handful of agencies. Consequently, there is little evidence regarding the types of misconduct across agencies, or the impact of department-level characteristics on the nature and prevalence of officer deviance. The purpose of this paper is to address this research gap using statewide data of over 1,500 charges of police misconduct filed with the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) from 2000 to 2011.

Design/methodology/approach

This study examines variation in the prevalence and forms of misconduct across 100+ agencies based on agency …

Looking Beyond Patient Satisfaction: Experiences Of Spanish-Speaking Patients Seeking Non-Urgent Care In An Emergency Department, Seiichi Villalona

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This exploratory mixed-methods study examines the experiences of Spanish-speaking patients seeking non-urgent care in an emergency department setting. Emphasis is placed on understanding variables that influence patient satisfaction among this particular special patient population. This study draws from the explanatory models of illness and perspectives of clinically applied anthropology in contributing to the limited body of scholarly work that utilizes ethnographic approaches in clinical spaces to investigate how patients experience seeking emergency care services. Health-related deservingness, social determinants of health, and health literacy are used as complementary frameworks in understanding the unique experiences of these patients. The combination of methodological …

A Narrative And Performative Methodology For Understanding Adolescent Cancer Stories, Patrick Mcelearney Jun 2018

A Narrative And Performative Methodology For Understanding Adolescent Cancer Stories, Patrick Mcelearney

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The field of health communication places considerable attention on coping with cancer, typically using social scientific approaches to investigate uncertainty, information, and/or social networks. Social scientific models of coping with adolescent cancer often measure how behaviors seek to manage cancer’s uncontrollability and/or uncertainty; however, how adolescents cope with cancer has been unclear. Short-term studies show adolescents typically and atypically cope. Long-term studies show a significant portion of survivors exhibit post-traumatic stress. The narrative and performative turns expose the role narratives and performatives play in shaping human subjects as meaning makers rather than merely information sharers. A narrative subject reframes cancer’s …

Building Program Quality In Youth Development Staff Training: Critical Components As Perceived By Currently Employed Youth Development Professionals In The United States, Jeantyl Norze

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Program quality is the program characteristics, indicators, and implementation practices that stakeholders mutually agreed upon. These program quality components are interlinked. Therefore, it is critical to help youth practitioners think through the logical connection among the components of program quality. This can be partly achieved through professional development, which equips practitioners with competencies necessary to perform their tasks. As a result, a staff training model was designed to corroborate the work that has been done in the positive youth development field with the aim of achieving program quality using a systematic review method. This staff training model comprises four components: …

The Role Of Bilingualism On Affix Borrowing: The Case Of Nominal And Verbal Derivation In Chimalaba, Hamisi Amani, Abel Y. Mreta Jun 2018

The Role Of Bilingualism On Affix Borrowing: The Case Of Nominal And Verbal Derivation In Chimalaba, Hamisi Amani, Abel Y. Mreta

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper describes an interesting case of the role of bilingualism on affix borrowing from Kiswahili into Chimalaba. The data were collected through interviews, previous collected corpora, native narratives and targeted elicitations. Thomason’s (2001), Borrowing Scale (BS) and the Principle of Functional Explanation (PFE) guided the analysis. The BS predicts the level of intensity of contact with possible socio-historical factors for borrowing of particular structural features, whereas the PFE through a Multi-Causation Model (MCM) specifies the interplay of factors in promoting structural borrowing in a hierarchy. The findings indicate that bilingualism plays an intermediary role in promoting affix borrowing in …

The Influence Of Catholic Culture Type On The Spiritual Lives Of College Students, Betsy V. Ackerson

Journal of Catholic Education

This paper considers the Catholic culture of American Catholic colleges and universities in light of their ultimate mission and purpose—that of fostering and drawing students to a deeper knowledge and understanding of truth and themselves in relation to Truth, who is God. Drawing on Catholic theology, philosophy, magisterial teachings, and scholarship on culture and human development, the study explores the relationship between Catholic culture and students’ spiritual development at Catholic colleges and universities. It applies the Morey-Piderit Catholic culture framework and analyzes survey responses from more than 10,000 college students to identify the relationship between Catholic culture type and spiritual …

The Characteristics Of Catholic Schools: Comparative Perspectives From The Usa And Queensland, Australia, Jim Gleeson, John O'Gorman, Peta Goldburg, Maureen M. O'Neill

Journal of Catholic Education

The faith-based identity of Catholic schools is increasingly problematic in a secularised society where the numbers of teachers belonging to religious orders are diminishing rapidly. Teachers’ views regarding the characteristics of Catholic schools are an important aspect of the identity of such schools. The authors locate Catholic schools in the USA and Queensland, Australia, in their respective contexts and compare teachers’ ratings of the importance of eleven given characteristics of Catholic schools as seen by 3,389 teachers in USA Catholic schools and 2,287 teachers in Queensland Catholic schools. When the mean ratings for each jurisdiction were statistically correlated, USA teachers …
