Repurposing Digital Methods For Human-Centered Design, Donato Ricci, Agata Brilli, Roberta Tassi

DRS Biennial Conference Series

From logs and information left in online spaces to data points self-generated by connected devices, digital traces have become more diffused over the past years, prompting an expansion of Human-Centered Design methods. Along with some big- data approaches, Digital Methods of research – treating the actual content of digital users’ manifestation on-line (i.e. tweets, Instagram pictures, comments) – offer the opportunity to better understand users through their online activities. This paper investigates how Digital Methods can be repurposed as a full-fledged approach for Human-Centered Design. Grafting on the NATURPRADI project – a research aimed at describing the debate raised by …

Desert Drawing: From Pigment To (Apple) Pencil, Nicola St John Jun 2018

Desert Drawing: From Pigment To (Apple) Pencil, Nicola St John

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The ability to digitally draw is ingrained within contemporary visual design practices. Drawing is a way of recording, representing and communicating that reveals the identity and voice of the creator as they design for a communication purpose. This paper presents a case of how a group of young Indigenous students re-interpret traditional culture through the act of drawing, as they move from analogue to digital technologies. Through a series of design workshops, the drawing styles of participants from remote Central Australia were recorded and analyzed. Workshops were based within Youth Participatory Action Research methodologies and embedded within Indigenous pedagogies. Results …

Natural Materials – Nature Of Materials, Damla Tonuk, Tom Fisher Jun 2018

Natural Materials – Nature Of Materials, Damla Tonuk, Tom Fisher

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The material world is recently and very rapidly changing; altering the relationships between materials – the substance of everyday life – and designers – the professionals who are responsible for transforming materials into daily life objects. This vibrant context prompts us to explore and attempt to conceptualise these fluid relationships and review conceptual tools that will help to open up the scope of materials-based research in design. To address the multiple and multi-faceted relationships designers are situated in, we borrow concepts from social sciences that explore materiality within its multiple environments. We draw on conceptualisations of materials as active and …

Tegelen: Supporting Individual And Group Reflection Through A Dynamic, Structured And Tangible Tool, Yasemin Arslan, Ine Mols, Caroline Hummels

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The municipality of Eindhoven is exploring her new role in a transforming society, just as other local governments. This role requires (behavior) changes on personal, organizational and societal levels. In this paper we shed light on how reflection for civil servants can be stimulated and supported through design. We present our qualitative empirical study carried out in the municipality of Eindhoven, which resulted into the reflection tool called Tegelen. Herein, we introduce a novel approach to support reflection for both personal as organizational usage, within individual and group sessions. Evaluating the concept in context showed that reflection benefits from the …

Exploring The Pop-Up Shop For Co-Design Research, Anja Overdiek Jun 2018

Exploring The Pop-Up Shop For Co-Design Research, Anja Overdiek

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Temporary physical spaces are increasingly used as catalyst to engage consumers and users in co-design activities. Whilst there are published insights into the design and facilitation of these spaces, a systematic view on their research opportunities and design requirements is still missing. This paper takes a first exploration into the employment of physical pop-up shops for user and stakeholder engagement. It analyses theory from marketing and human geography from a design research perspective to formulate design requirements for pop-up shops with the goal of engagement and co-design. It also proposes to categorize pop-up shop research as experience prototyping for the …

Persona Development In The Public Domain? Challenges To Tackle, Amber Ronteltap, Andrea Bukman, Martha De Jonge, Eric Roscam Abbing Jun 2018

Persona Development In The Public Domain? Challenges To Tackle, Amber Ronteltap, Andrea Bukman, Martha De Jonge, Eric Roscam Abbing

DRS Biennial Conference Series

How to create personas to improve designs for behaviour change strategies in the public domain? Three recent cases illustrate lessons learnt and challenges encountered during persona development in the public domain. Personas were helpful to gain insight into diversity within a target group, to create empathy for its members, and to have a shared understanding when communicating about them. The main challenges encountered were 1) capturing complex behaviour with personas, as the behaviours involved were variable over time, the (legislative) environment in motion, and the target groups diverse; 2) finding the right balance between intuitive vs. evidence-based decision-making, a process …

Investigating Perceptions Related To Technology Acceptance & Stigma Of Wearable Robotic Assistive Devices By Older Adults - Preliminary Findings, Linda Shore, Adam De Eyto, Leonard O'Sullivan

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Longevity, and good Quality of Life enhances a positive ageing experience by post- retirement adults. However, physical decline and limitations may affect independence and autonomy to conduct and engage in day to day tasks and social activities. Assistive robots can offer support to assist, and become embodied features that are accepted and worn by older adults. To date, research is limited and little is known about older adults’ opinions of assistance by robots in personal and home life. There are a number of Technology Acceptance Models (TAMs) presenting quantitative based questionnaires that attempt to gauge acceptance and usefulness of robots …

Using Design Competencies To Define Curricula And Support Learners, John Fass, Job Rutgers, Mo-Ling Chui

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper presents findings from design research related to a Design Competency Framework (DCF). The DCF is a visually-oriented system for developing curricula in design and is an example of the application of design research to design education. The DCF is divided into a set of sixteen categories including core skills, such as visualisation, and meta competencies such as synthesis. These are presented in the form of a matrix. We see three distinct advantages of using such a system. Firstly the DCF is personalisable at various scales such as individuals, units, courses, and programs. Secondly it is student centred - …

Pedagogic Power-Tools: Knowing What Was And What Is, For What Will Be, Glen O'Sullivan Jun 2018

Pedagogic Power-Tools: Knowing What Was And What Is, For What Will Be, Glen O'Sullivan

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The tools we choose to derive benefit from and our perception of their significance play a determining role in how successful the designs we create will be. When we think of a tool, the first thing that comes to mind is more than likely a device you hold in your hand. However, the designs we create are not only made with tools of a physical nature but are also birthed from tools of an abstract variety. Therefore not all tools are prosthetic. Some design tools are related to or exist in the form of words. These are verbal tools. In …

Critical Placemaking: Towards A More Critical Engagement For Participatory Design In The Urban Environment, Tania Allen, Sara Glee Queen Jun 2018

Critical Placemaking: Towards A More Critical Engagement For Participatory Design In The Urban Environment, Tania Allen, Sara Glee Queen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper offers a framework for design research that invites civic participation in the construction of place, and aims to reignite the conversation Nigel Cross raised in 1971 as a part of the first proceeding of the Design Research Society, calling on a need for user participation and intentional boundary-crossing. The need for new methods is no more evident than in the field of urban design. As global populations are migrating at unprecedented rates, new and different ideas and cultures are integrating and colliding at a high velocity. Additionally, the digital tools we use to understand and navigate urban environments …

Aestheticising Change: Simulations Of Progress, Jocelyn Bailey, Chad Story Jun 2018

Aestheticising Change: Simulations Of Progress, Jocelyn Bailey, Chad Story

DRS Biennial Conference Series

If, following Rancière, politics revolves around who has power to articulate ‘the sensible’, then designers, as aesthetic practitioners, must be caught up in questions of politics. This is particularly so when design practice becomes part of the way public sector actors negotiate, envision and catalyse change in relation to public ‘problems’. However, this is also typically a form of design practice that eschews any talk of aesthetics — presenting as de-skilled, democratic and ‘de-aestheticised’, in a sense. By analysing and re-describing such design practice in aesthetic terms here — illustrated with an example from practice — we provide an alternative …

Emphasis was placed on advertising design and …

Digital, Analog, Discursive: Knowledge Practices And Sense-Making In Design-Build Architecture, Claire Nicolas Jun 2018

Digital, Analog, Discursive: Knowledge Practices And Sense-Making In Design-Build Architecture, Claire Nicolas

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Through referencing ethnographic research among university architecture students, this paper reflects on practices of sense-making that bridge digital and material media (including bodies). Our discussion follows students and instructors as they develop designs that are analytically feasible or “true” in digital environments (i.e. in various rendering and modeling software such as AutoCAD and Rhino), only to be confronted with incongruities of material resistance and problems of embodied skill (or lack thereof) when the design enters the “real” world. The paper explores the sense- making, socio-material aspects of design-based activity, considering how the digital and the analog may be puzzled over …

Platform Ethics In Technology: What Happens To The User?, Anuradha Reddy, Maria Hellström Reimer Jun 2018

Platform Ethics In Technology: What Happens To The User?, Anuradha Reddy, Maria Hellström Reimer

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In recent times, the design of technology platforms has been largely driven by the optimization of data flows in large-scale urban initiatives. Even though many platforms have good intentions, rising expectations for data efficiency and reliability, the configuration of users and user’s interactions inevitably have ethical consequences. It has become increasingly difficult to foresee how a wide diversity of users fares against a spatially complex and materially incomplete management and distribution of data flows. Through the logic of platformization, we explore how this plays out in the context of open mapping platforms - in the case of an individual elderly …

Culture-Orientated Food Design For Social Issue, Yinman Guo, Tie Ji Jun 2018

Culture-Orientated Food Design For Social Issue, Yinman Guo, Tie Ji

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Cultural globalization threatens cultural diversity, especially for minority cultures and ethnic cultures. In response to the fading of cultural identities, there is rare literature discussing how design can contribute. Through integrating the cultural significance of food and food design methods, the paper proposes a culture-oriented food design model to strengthen cultural identity and create connections. A case study of designing a delivery service of Chinese food for the second-generation Chinese Americans is presented to solve their identity crisis through the process of defining user, content, experience, and design around culture respectively. Feedback from target users shows that the cultural meaning …

Formgiving To Feminist Futures As Design Activism, Maryam Heidaripour, Laura Forlano Jun 2018

Formgiving To Feminist Futures As Design Activism, Maryam Heidaripour, Laura Forlano

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design activism is the enforcement of positive socio-political change by intervening in daily lives. In this paper, we argue that ‘formgiving’ to futures--design interventions such as physical objects, embodied experiences, and affective engagements--is an activist practice with the unique qualities of engaging participants and facilitating the co-creation of alternatives. Central to our exploration is the question of how to participate in the work of generating new ways of conceptualizing, materializing, and experiencing alternative futures. Drawing on feminist theory and, in particular, its profound commitment to social justice, we discuss three core dimensions that are relevant to the practice of ‘formgiving’ …

Prototyping Multispecies Environments: Attentiveness And Friction As Modes Of Knowing, Martin Tironi, Pablo Hermansen Jun 2018

Prototyping Multispecies Environments: Attentiveness And Friction As Modes Of Knowing, Martin Tironi, Pablo Hermansen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This article is based on the process of prototyping an environmental enrichment device for gibbons at the National Zoo of Chile (ZNdC). We analyse the capacity of prototyping to make the ontological qualities of the entities involved perceptible while precipitating forms of care and connection. We will show that the very process of prototyping favours the mise en scène of an interspecies environment, sheltering the delicate unfolding of an ‘us’ that is based on mutual care and attention. We argue that this unfolding transforms prototyping into a cosmopolitical place for exercising modes of correspondence between humans, non-humans and environments. In …

Sustainable Fashion Practices In The Soviet Union?, Simona Veilande Jun 2018

Sustainable Fashion Practices In The Soviet Union?, Simona Veilande

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper addresses various research issues regarding the (non-existent) fashion industry and aspects of sustainability in meeting citizens' everyday needs in the Soviet Union. Why was the Soviet fashion industry struggling? How did the Soviet citizens acquire the necessary apparel? What sustainability ideas could be found in the society's interpretation of fashion? What can be learned from the Soviet DIY subculture? The research was done using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, including the artistic research method. Researching the relationship between the Soviet worldview and fashion, one can argue that the fashion points out the bipolar disorder of the …

Methods Across Borders: Reflections Of Using Design-Led Qualitative Methods In Burkina Faso, Adolphe Yemtim, Achille Sévérin Lebongo Onana, Charlotte Ray, Jamie Cross, Craig Martin, Arno G. Verhoeven

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The paper presents an overview of activities of a funded project interrogating energy requirements of displaced populations in the Goudoubo camp in Burkina Faso. The overall project adopts a qualitative approach to enquiry using methods often employed by designers in participatory and human-centred design projects, with training provided for embedded researchers from disciplines other than design through a series of workshops prior fieldwork. The overall project aims to build a qualitative toolkit for enquiry into the daily lives of refuges and their lived energy requirements. The paper asks whether the engaged design methods, understood in the context of “global north” …

A Study On The Roles Of Designers Co-Evolving With Tools, Jeong-Sub Lim, Eui-Chul Jung Jun 2018

A Study On The Roles Of Designers Co-Evolving With Tools, Jeong-Sub Lim, Eui-Chul Jung

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Humans have always been making tools, creating artefacts with the tools and also using those artefacts as tools. The concept of tools is changing from the expansion of the human body to the expansion of human intelligence. The development of computer technology and the emergence of artificial intelligence raise serious questions about the faculties and roles of humans. The same is true for the faculties and roles of designers who use computers as their main tool in their work. In this paper, the inherent faculties of the human mind, revealed through the Kantian approach, are applied to designers. According to …

A Vocabulary For Visions In Designing For Transitions, Dan Lockton, Stuart Candy Jun 2018

A Vocabulary For Visions In Designing For Transitions, Dan Lockton, Stuart Candy

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Visions of sustainable futures have been proposed as a key component of transition design, offering a way for today’s situations and design proposals to be compared and critiqued in the light of desired future states. Such ambitions are necessarily wide- ranging, and call for drawing together strands on design and speculation from diverse sources. Here we seek to add to the momentum by exploring a set of concepts relating particularly to this role of vision in designing for transitions. Building on perspectives and projects from other fields, we present elements of a visionary vocabulary, situating these terms in relation to …

Changes In Design Research: Sources And Methods Of Idea Generation In Industrial Design, Ying Sun, Sander Münster, Carlo Michael Sommer Jun 2018

Changes In Design Research: Sources And Methods Of Idea Generation In Industrial Design, Ying Sun, Sander Münster, Carlo Michael Sommer

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design idea generation is a process rooted in individual knowledge and is often considered a precedent-based type of reasoning, where knowledge is continuously transformed to produce new insights. Selecting and organizing inspirational sources has a profound impact on how industrial designers generate creative solutions and creates its own challenges. Many authors have focused on what materials designers look for while searching for inspiration. However, there is less research concerning the approaches used to guide the process of envisioning design solutions when using these sources. Therefore, we conducted open-ended semi-structured qualitative interviews with 12 designers, to learn about how experienced industrial …

Embodied Knowledge In A Community Adaptive Practice, Sucharita Beniwal Jun 2018

Embodied Knowledge In A Community Adaptive Practice, Sucharita Beniwal

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper aims to understand experiential knowledge in a community practice of making by expanding the definition of a designed-object, and design-authorship. It seeks to do so through an enquiry into the making of an object-tool used and made by a community of manual load-bearers in Delhi's vegetable and fruit markets. Tool- making requires an understanding of the task and body’s capability. These load- bearers, over decades, have devised two distinct object-tools from understanding contextual differences in material-forms of load being carried, their bodily limitations and available material constraints. The repeated sensorial, kinaesthetic and embodied experience of carrying loads gives …
