When Brother Becomes Other: Communitas And Conflict Along The Camino De Santiago, Megan E. Havard
When Brother Becomes Other: Communitas And Conflict Along The Camino De Santiago, Megan E. Havard
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
It is widely believed, both by scholars and practitioners of pilgrimage, that during the rite most if not all pilgrims experience communitas - a sense of community, of mutual understanding and acceptance of their fellow ritual initiates that is unfettered by traditional social structures or markers of difference. Nevertheless, evidence indicates that conflict also regularly arises among pilgrims, even as they navigate the same liminoid space in pursuit of a common goal. Pilgrims may experience conflict with one another due to differences in personality, divergent cultural backgrounds, the perception of scarcity of resources, the intrinsic stress of transformation, or myriad …
The Maria Lionza Pilgrimage: From Sacred Mountains To Hotels, Cristina Carter
The Maria Lionza Pilgrimage: From Sacred Mountains To Hotels, Cristina Carter
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
María Lionza is an indigenous Venezuelan religion that dates back to the 14th century. Combining Catholic, West African, and indigenous religions it was outlawed from being practiced until 1959. At this moment, María Lionza no longer hides from society, being transferred through means of oral tradition and family kinship, instead, it has built a strong foundation through politics and documented literature. As the pilgrimage has gained popularity and approximately 50% of Venezuelans attend, the state has become more involved. In 1960 the state named Mount Sorte (the location of the pilgrimage) a national park; giving them more authority over the …
Ecology Of Pilgrimage: Building Socio-Ecological Community On The Way, Peggy L. Eppig
Ecology Of Pilgrimage: Building Socio-Ecological Community On The Way, Peggy L. Eppig
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
A developed sense of interdependence with the socio-ecological landscapes of pilgrimage can serve as a path for accepting and reducing the impact we have in our sacred travels. Developing ecological habits of mind allows the pilgrim to draw deeper meanings from and thus greater affinity with the natural world. Raising awareness of environmental issues and appreciating the interaction of humans and the natural world helps modern pilgrims play an important role in conservation and restoration of pilgrimage landscapes.
Political Pilgrimage During China’S Cultural Revolution: The Case Of Dazhai, Ian S. Mcintosh
Political Pilgrimage During China’S Cultural Revolution: The Case Of Dazhai, Ian S. Mcintosh
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
During China’s Cultural Revolution (1966-76) political pilgrimage was a tool for promoting the communist ideal of collectivism. This paper explores the creation in the 1960s by Chairman Mao Zedong of one of the foremost sites of political pilgrimage, the small agricultural commune of Dazhai in north-central China. I argue that in the days of militant atheism, all the factors usually associated with the creation of a religious pilgrimage site were present and utilized to great effect by the communists to create a ‘super symbol’ of China’s desired future. These factors included a miracle, charismatic leadership, altruism, poignant sites of historical …
Enacting The Glastonbury Pilgrimage Through Communitas And Aural/Visual Culture, Kathryn R. Barush
Enacting The Glastonbury Pilgrimage Through Communitas And Aural/Visual Culture, Kathryn R. Barush
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The sacred sites of Glastonbury in Somerset, England have long been places of pilgrimage, connected to the legend of the journey of Joseph of Arimathea to the British Isles, and have fired the imagination from the Middle Ages to today - inspiring the Arthurian legends, folk-stories and song, and visual representations. In response to the question ‘What is Pilgrimage,’ this essay seeks to explore the conjunction of artistic representations and geographic journeys to and among the ancient topography and mysterious structures of Glastonbury, with a particular focus on how sacred travel, and especially an experience of communitas, can be engendered …
What Is Pilgrimage?, George D. Greenia
What Is Pilgrimage?, George D. Greenia
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The term ‘pilgrimage’ has become a commonplace in modern conversations about any travel that is announced as ‘intentional,’ ‘purposeful,’ ‘transformative,’ or simply promises to be ‘authentic.’ Scholars have to navigate between the twin advantage and liability that pilgrimage studies operate under no one disciplinary lens or unified methodology, and the historical range is infinite. Many feel that modern tourism needs to preserve a place for the respectful non-believer without degrading the experience of traditional religious pilgrims. To some degree all intentional travelers are open to an experience of the transcendent that’s compatible with their belief systems and they are willing …

Recognizing And Overcoming The Myths Of Modernity, Renata Leitao
Recognizing And Overcoming The Myths Of Modernity, Renata Leitao
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper aims to contribute to the debate around the cultural dimension of the transitions by shedding a light on myths at the core of the modern civilizational project. The term myths is used to talk about stories that embody the values of the modern project, which became a certainty in people’s minds. Transitioning to a sustainable civilization entails that we create and adopt new storylines. In order to do so, designers must be story-listeners and recognize the myths that are hindering the transformation of our ways of life. The modern world is, arguably, a world with only one storyline …

Design For Profit Or Prosper, Else Skjold, Frederik Larsen
Design For Profit Or Prosper, Else Skjold, Frederik Larsen
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Over the past decade, it has become increasingly popular to position design as an excellent tool for companies and organisations to foster innovation and growth. As an adaptable practice design can be applied to serve many ends, and in the field of sustainable transition design has the potential to create new solutions due to its capacity to ‘reframe’ large-scale problems of a ‘wicked’ nature. However, as we will argue in this paper, the innovation and change promoted through design risks becoming merely a vehicle for promoting the values associated with 20th century neoliberal capitalism. We therefore want to question the …
Understanding Situated Energy Values In Rural Kenya, Larissa Pschetz, Catherine Magill, Ewan Klein, Jamie Cross, Dan Van Der Horst
Understanding Situated Energy Values In Rural Kenya, Larissa Pschetz, Catherine Magill, Ewan Klein, Jamie Cross, Dan Van Der Horst
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Off-grid energy systems are facilitating new forms of energy production and consumption. Independent from national grids, they can be installed in more ad-hoc ways and have the potential to generate profit not only by selling energy but also by collecting data about their users and environment. As such, they present new challenges and opportunities for the design of services and interactive systems, which require new understanding of what is relevant to the diversity of people who rely on these systems for power. In this paper, we report on an interview and probe-based study carried out in a rural area in …
Reinventing Graphic Design Software By Bridging The Gap Between Graphical User Interfaces And Programming, Nolwenn Maudet
Reinventing Graphic Design Software By Bridging The Gap Between Graphical User Interfaces And Programming, Nolwenn Maudet
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Graphic Design Software Applications radically transformed the practice and the industry of graphic design. However, they barely evolved since their introduction, leading designers to question their ubiquity. In this paper, we explore this mismatch by analysing digital design tools through two lenses. We first investigate digital design tools from a “lineage” perspective: how they reproduced the pre-existing design tools and practices. We then use two familiar examples: the colour picker and the alignment and distribution commands to explore the vision of design that they promote. We reveal how these tools assume that designers already have in mind a desired outcome …
Designer’S Emotions In The Design Process, Monica Biagioli, Silvia Grimaldi, Hena Ali
Designer’S Emotions In The Design Process, Monica Biagioli, Silvia Grimaldi, Hena Ali
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This is a position paper towards the establishment of a research network to address the impact of tacit experiential knowledge, emotion, and cultural perspective on a designer’s decision-making during a design process. With this network, we are aiming to start a focused discussion across geographies and cultures regarding the role and impact of designers’ emotions within their own design process. The function of this is to foreground the experiential and emotional domain of designers’ practice and examine the role of tacit experiential knowledge in design decision-making. The paper sets up the basis and context of discussion, exploring the three key …
Combining Practices In Craft And Design, Micheal Nitsche, Clement Zheng
Combining Practices In Craft And Design, Micheal Nitsche, Clement Zheng
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Combining practices of craft and interaction design opens up new opportunities for both domains but structuring such cross-domain collaboration poses challenges. How to set up a crafter-designer collaboration to utilize the different fields of expertise and include separate practices? We address this question through a co-design research approach. First, we present an overview over existing approaches. Then, we propose our perspective that builds on an initial distinction between the collaborators, repositions the construction of the brief, and culminates into a collaboration through the shared object. Finally, we describe a successful collaboration between an interaction designer and a ceramic artist to …
The Beauty Of Making Hot Chocolate - An Enquiry On Designing For Everyday Rituals, Pierre Lévy
The Beauty Of Making Hot Chocolate - An Enquiry On Designing For Everyday Rituals, Pierre Lévy
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The everyday is often mentioned in design, yet hardly inquired. The everyday is about what is banal, infraordinary, not memorable, as well as about the force that makes things habitual, endotic. In the research encompassing this paper, we question the everyday and explore opportunities to enchant it by design. This paper focuses more specifically on the design of everyday rituals, and aims to propose a descriptive framework to ‘read’ and compose such rituals. The elaboration of the framework is done based on a case study: the making of a hot chocolate in the morning. Through an autoethnographical approach, the main …
Adapting Safemedicate (Medication Dosage Calculation Skills Software) For Use In Brazil, Samia Valeria Ozorio Dutra
Adapting Safemedicate (Medication Dosage Calculation Skills Software) For Use In Brazil, Samia Valeria Ozorio Dutra
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Medication related errors are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. In Brazil, most errors are related to prescribing, preparing, and administering medications. One way to deal with this barrier to safe care is through assessment and education of medication calculation dosage skills. Considering the Brazilian reality, this dissertation is a context and language adaptation of an evidence-based intervention called safeMedicate, a program that reinforces learning synthesis in crucial elements of medication dosage problem solving and provides the foundation for development in remaining levels of the hierarchy of learning. A guideline for medication calculation skills development or improvement based on …

Pedagogical Design Research For University Police Uniforms, Brooke Brandewie, Injoo Kim, Myoung-Ok Kim, Robin Engel, Kevin Karpiak
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper explores issues and opportunities for new university police officer uniform designs by utilizing a User-Centered Design Methods course as a qualitative pedagogical research approach. As a way of introducing problem-based learning, we brought the uniform redesign project to the junior level class in the School of Design. Since the design brief focused on university police, we viewed this as critical since students are key stakeholders of the uniforms. From the students’ interviews with the officers, key themes were identified about the current uniform items (i.e. hats, shirts, vests, pants, hats, and accessories) among other uniform topics. Findings indicated …
Critique And Post-Critique In Social Innovation Projects: Between Speculation And Realism, Sissel Olander
Critique And Post-Critique In Social Innovation Projects: Between Speculation And Realism, Sissel Olander
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper discusses notions of critique, post-critique, speculation and realism, as it reflects through a practice-based design research project, which worked as part of a bigger Danish public innovation program with the involvement of citizens in the design of a new library and cultural house under construction. Specifically, the paper sets out to challenge what seems to be a dichotomous “either-or” thinking in the descriptions and analyses of practice-based design research projects. Accounts of design research that operates in overlapping landscapes of academia, public sector and business are often depicted as too solution-orientated and therefore not reflexive, too engaged and …
‘One Over, One Under’: A Dialogue Between Design And Craft, Can Atlay, Gizem Öz
‘One Over, One Under’: A Dialogue Between Design And Craft, Can Atlay, Gizem Öz
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Focusing on a process where the designer embeds herself in craftspeople’s workshops with the intention of ‘learning from inside’ and ‘making together’; this paper proposes pathways for considering collaboration within design. ‘One Over, One Under’ as the title of the mentioned project suggests, points to the tensions that make weaving possible, also acting as an analogy to collaboration between designers and craftspeople. The project proposes a mode of working and a spectrum of outcomes where the designer has a first-hand experience of production techniques, engages in a serious and continuous dialogue through making, and develops an intervention that also brings …
Co-Creation In Professional Craft Practice, Camilla Groth, Arild Berg
Co-Creation In Professional Craft Practice, Camilla Groth, Arild Berg
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Design practice involves several disciplines, and when the manufacturing process demands special skills, designers outsource the work to craftspersons. Traditionally, craftspersons make a living by taking orders and delivering handmade artefacts according to the designer’s prescriptions. In this paper, we ask the following: What are the essential issues emerging when designers outsource the manufacturing of their designs to professional craft practitioners? We present a case study in which aspects of sharing and experiential knowledge are analysed both from the point of view of the designers and the craftspersons involved in the making of artefacts for an exhibition. We found that …
