Classification techniques for images of handwritten characters are susceptible to noise. Quadtrees can be an efficient representation for learning from sparse features. In this paper, we improve the effectiveness of probabilistic quadtrees by using a pixel level classifier to extract the character pixels and remove noise from handwritten character images. The pixel level denoiser (a deep belief network) uses the map responses obtained from a pretrained CNN as features for reconstructing the characters eliminating noise. We experimentally demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by reconstructing and classifying a noisy version of handwritten Bangla Numeral and Basic Character datasets.

Design Synthesis Of Flexible Antennas Using Artificial Neural Network, Ali Isam Hammoodi
Theses and Dissertations
Nowadays, flexible devices have witnessed a great deal of interest in both industrial and academia. Consistently, flexible electronic systems require the integration of a conformal and flexible antenna operating in specific frequency bands to provide wireless connectivity which is highly demanded in today’s information-oriented society. Designing of microstrip antenna has become the focus of modern technologies due to their light weight, ease of fabrication, and ability to integrate electronics devices. Simple structure such has square patch, circular patch, or rectangular patch are easy to maintain using empirical equations which based on some experimental results. However, more complicated structures are hard …

Humans have a tendency to be self-absorbed; because of that we’ve evolved our ability to communicate to one another, in many different ways, more advanced than any other animal on the planet. Humans always express themselves to one another through the emotions they feel in a certain situation. One form of communication that seems universal for humans is the way we react emotionally to each other. Through the processes of printmaking, etching and lithography, I am expressing a certain situation I may experience myself but also connecting my own experience with others; making my viewers feel relatable and connected with …

Developing Molecular Methods For Detection Of Blood Meal Sources Of A Free-Living Marine Ectoparasite, Gina Carole Hendrick
Developing Molecular Methods For Detection Of Blood Meal Sources Of A Free-Living Marine Ectoparasite, Gina Carole Hendrick
Student Theses and Dissertations
Gnathiid isopods are one of the most common ectoparasites found in coral reef habitats. Sequencing of host blood meals from wild-caught specimens is a promising tool for addressing the extent to which they feed on available hosts. Challenges must be overcome when samples are subjected to conditions that may contribute to DNA degradation, and efforts to slow DNA degradation during field collection can play an important role in the successful identification of the blood-meal source. Herein, we developed and validated molecular-based host identification methods for a Caribbean gnathiid isopods based on the degradation rate of blood meals. These methods were …

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Osteoporosis affects one in four post-menopausal women, and approximately one in three of those women will experience a fracture due to osteoporosis in their lifetime. Sleep deprivation may be a contributing factor in the acceleration of osteoporosis due to the increase in pro-inflammatory cytokine production which may potentiate the diminished estrogen signaling.
Tumor-necrosis factor alpha-type (TNFα), a pro-inflammatory cytokine of interest, stimulates osteoprotegerin ligand (OPGL) to increase the degradation of bone. Bisphosphonates, like Zolendronate, are the most commonly prescribed treatment for osteoporosis because they decrease osteoclastic activity. This study analyzed the effects of chronic sleep deprivation and Zolendronate on TNFα …

Gmaim: An Analytical Pipeline For Microrna Splicing Profiling Using Generative Model, Kan Liu
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of short (~22 nt) single strand RNA molecules predominantly found in eukaryotes. Being involved in many major biological processes, miRNAs can regulate gene expression by targeting mRNAs to facilitate their degradation or translational inhibition. The imprecise splicing of miRNA splicing which introduces severe variability in terms of sequences of miRNA products and their corresponding downstream gene expression regulation. For example, to study biogenesis of miRNAs, usually, biologists can deplete a gene in the miRNA biogenesis pathway and study the change of miRNA sequences, which can cause impression of miRNAs. Although high-throughput sequencing technologies such as …
Structural Characterization Of Feruloylated Arabinoxylan Oligosaccharides Isolated From Rice Bran Fiber, Kan Takahashi
Structural Characterization Of Feruloylated Arabinoxylan Oligosaccharides Isolated From Rice Bran Fiber, Kan Takahashi
Student Theses and Dissertations
Increased consumption of soluble cereal arabinoxylan (AX), and feruloylated arabinoxylan oligosaccharides (FAXOs) generated from it, may promote healthful gastro-intestinal functioning through modulating the gut microbiota and tuning innate immune response function at the gut epithelium. FAXO compositions isolated from rice bran fiber were characterized for their oligosaccharide mass profiles (MALDI-TOF MS) and monosaccharide compositions (GC-FID). Results indicated gluco-oligosaccharides were covalently associated with the FAXOs. I tested the hypothesis that the association represents a novel intermolecular crosslink between mixed linkage β-glucan and AX in rice caryopsis cell walls. The structural characteristics of gluco-oligosaccharides were analyzed to determine glycosidic linkages (GC-MS) and …

Merely viewing objects within reachable space can activate motor cortical networks and potentiate movement. This holds potential value for smooth interaction with objects in our surroundings, and could offer an advantage for quickly generating targeted hand movements (e.g. grasping a support rail to maintain stability). The present study investigated if viewing a wall-mounted safety handle resulted in automatic activation of motor cortical networks, and if this effect changes with age. Twenty-five young adults (18–30 years) and seventeen older adults (65+ years) were included in this study. Single-pulse, transcranial magnetic stimulation was applied over the motor cortical hand representation of young …

The brain communicates with the spinal cord through numerous axon tracts that arise from discrete nuclei, transmit distinct functions, and often collateralize to facilitate the coordination of descending commands. This complexity presents a major challenge to interpreting functional outcomes from therapies that target supraspinal connectivity after injury or disease, while the wide distribution of supraspinal nuclei complicates the delivery of therapeutics. Here we harness retrograde viral vectors to overcome these challenges. We demonstrate that injection of AAV2-Retro to the cervical spinal cord of adult female mice results in highly efficient transduction of supraspinal populations throughout the brainstem, midbrain, and cortex. …

Amun-Ra, a God known to the Egyptians as titles such as the “Supreme God” was truly someone who Egyptians dare not offend. Symbolized by the ram expressing fertility and war, two powerful forces that both create and end humans. Though this may be true, he was not always known that way. Originally, Amun-Ra was known as Ra who was recognized as the “Sun God.” He not only created himself, but he was the creator of the entire universe. He was known to have so much power, that some historians believe that the ancient Egyptians had a monotheistic belief. Ra also …

The Wailing Spirits: How Banshees Reflect An Ever-Changing View Of Women In Society, Brianna Leonard
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
A banshee, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is “a female spirit in Gaelic folklore whose appearance or wailing warns a family that one of them will soon die.” This definition, while correct, barely scratches the surface of banshees in Celtic mythology. These lamenting spirits were once known as “keeners,” or women who sang sad songs at funerals in medieval tradition. Keeners were paid remarkably well, and some were so talented that powerful families claimed they were “bean sidhe,” or fairy women. Over time, banshees have been interpreted in many ways, and the women who were once paid to sing at …

Nostalgia And Music-Evoked Autobiographical Memories: Salience And Content In Musicians Vs. Non-Musicians, Taylorlyn Mehnert
Honors Theses
This paper examines a subsection of data from a larger study conducted by Alycia Sterenberg titled, “The determinants of affect, emotional arousal, and autobiographical memories on music-evoked nostalgia”. The question being examined was: when examining musicians and non-musicians, what difference is there in the intensity of nostalgic memories between the two groups; what elements of a memory are either group more likely to be nostalgic about when listening to music they have labeled as nostalgic for themselves? The data was acquired from questionnaires participants filled out after listening to music generated to be similar to that which they had labeled …

Statistical Aspects Of Music Mining: Naive Dictionary Representation, Qiuyi Wu
Theses
Extensive studies have been conducted on both musical scores and audio tracks of western classical music with the finality of learning and detecting the key in which a particular piece of music was played. Both the Bayesian Approach and modern unsupervised learning via latent Dirichlet allocation have been used for such learning tasks. In this research work, we propose and develop the novel idea of treating musical sheets as literary documents in the traditional text analytics parlance, to fully benefit from the vast amount of research already existing in statistical text mining and topic modeling.
We specifically introduce the idea …

Modeling And Extraction Of Transport Parameters To Simulate Drug Delivery In The Murine Cochlea, Kevin Wilson
Theses
The usage of 1D and 3D models to simulate drug transport through the inner ear is a prominent method in cochlear fluid pharmacokinetics. However, the data used to create these models, is often based on invasive sampling methods that limit the spatial resolution given the size of the cochlear compartments within which solute can be measured. In this work by leveraging 3-D registered micro-Computed Tomography (μCT) scans of the murine cochlea that have been taken as iodinated contrast agent is delivered to it, we extract transport parameters and simulate a forward 1D model that allows variable and pulsatile delivery profiles …

Green Supply Chain Management: A Perspective On Best Practices In Gscm Design, Leroy Paddock, Natasha Rao
Arkansas Law Review
Greening of company supply chains has become almost de rigueur for large, publicly facing companies. One indication of this situation is the fact that 35 of the Fortune 50 companies and at least 58 of the Fortune 100 companies discuss at least some aspects of their green supply chain management (GSCM) activities on their public websites, primarily under the heading of “responsible sourcing.” These GSCM activities ] have the potential to contribute in very important ways to meeting societal sustainability goals, influencing suppliers that are beyond the reach of the national laws of consumer nations, and driving changes in environmental …
Food Sustainability In The Age Of Complex, Global Supply Chains, Steph Tai
Food Sustainability In The Age Of Complex, Global Supply Chains, Steph Tai
Arkansas Law Review
Food production has become more complex over time. Moreover, we are producing food in an increasingly global, rather than local, manner. How can demands for sustainability be reinforced in this age of complex, global supply chains? This essay focuses on three key features of the modern food supply chain: the variety of components, the complexity of the chain itself, and diversity of “enforcement” mechanisms in food production supply chains. These features suggest that traditional governmental tools (such as command and control measures) and contractual tools (such as performance standards) may not be sufficient to ensure sustainable production methods.
