Rosenzweig's Star And Systems Theory, Martin Zwick Oct 2018

Rosenzweig's Star And Systems Theory, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

As Moses (1992), Pollock (2009), and others have noted, Franz Rosenzweig was committed to systematic thought and developed in The Star of Redemption a highly structured philosophical theology. This paper argues that Rosenzweig’s thought has affinities with contemporary systems theory. While being systematic is not the same as using systems theoretic ideas, systematicity in any domain of knowledge invariably requires general ideas that are applicable to different phenomena. Such ideas are the core of systems theory. It is not surprising that a philosophical-theological work should have to some extent a systems-theoretic character, since systems ideas are ubiquitous not only in …

Synthesizing The Effects Of Submarine Groundwater Discharge On Marine Biota, Alanna L. Lecher, Katherine R.M. Mackey Oct 2018

Synthesizing The Effects Of Submarine Groundwater Discharge On Marine Biota, Alanna L. Lecher, Katherine R.M. Mackey

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is a global and well-studied geological process by which groundwater of varying salinities enters coastal waters. SGD is known to transport bioactive solutes, including but not limited to nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous, silica), gases (methane, carbon dioxide), and trace metals (iron, nickel, zinc). In addition, physical changes to the water column, such as changes in temperature and mixing can be caused by SGD. Therefore SGD influences both autotrophic and heterotrophic marine biota across all kingdoms of life. This paper synthesizes the current literature in which the impacts of SGD on marine biota were measured and observed by …

“It’S All The Same To Me”: Gender-Fluidity And Performativity In D. H. Lawrence’S The Fox, Rebecca Stokem Oct 2018

“It’S All The Same To Me”: Gender-Fluidity And Performativity In D. H. Lawrence’S The Fox, Rebecca Stokem

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

In D. H. Lawrence’s novella The Fox, the character March shows an ability to perform both masculine and feminine gender roles. While her performances are somewhat regulated by the other characters, March seems content with the gender-fluid nature of her identity. Her struggles with her identity come from Banford’s and Henry’s needs, which require her to become more masculine or more feminine rather than a balance of the two. While previous scholars have acknowledged March’s interior binary, they have cited her gender expression as ultimately failed masculinity, citing Lawrence’s own opinions on gender as proof. The scholarship on Lawrence …

“You Are Not On Trial For Being A Dwarf”: Monstrosity In Medievalism In Richard Iii And A Song Of Ice And Fire, Emily Parise Oct 2018

“You Are Not On Trial For Being A Dwarf”: Monstrosity In Medievalism In Richard Iii And A Song Of Ice And Fire, Emily Parise

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

George R.R Martin’s fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire, and William Shakespeare’s play Richard III both utilize a fictionalized medieval setting, thus creating an act of medievalism. Both texts utilize the setting of the War of the Roses to recreate a violent medieval past for popular consumption. By using the Middle Ages as a backdrop for these fictions, Shakespeare and Martin are able to utilize a medieval past to explore medieval and modern anxieties surrounding politics, society, and monstrosity. This paper examines the three major monsters present in these texts: Cersei and Tyrion Lannister in A Song …

Separate And Unequal: A Comparison Of African American And White Women In The 1850’S, As Seen Through Ruth Hall And The Garies And Their Friends, Mae Cornwell Oct 2018

Separate And Unequal: A Comparison Of African American And White Women In The 1850’S, As Seen Through Ruth Hall And The Garies And Their Friends, Mae Cornwell

Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the decade preceding the American Civil War, American authors Fanny Fern and Frank J. Webb wrote Ruth Hall (1855) and The Garies and Their Friends (1877), respectively. Although both novels feature female characters determined to better their lives, Fern’s lens focuses on white women while Webb’s is set on African American women. In analyzing these two texts, this essay defines race as Webb does: not simply as skin pigmentation, but as the combination of ancestry and communal identity, spawned from centuries of ingrained social morays interpreted as truth. These “truths” may appear arbitrary, but in fact carry tremendous clout …

Diasporadical: In Ryan Coogler's 'Black Panther,' Family Secrets, Cultural Alienation And Black Love, Terri P. Bowles

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

This is a review of the film Black Panther (2018) by Ryan Coogler, which traces the arc of the comic book hero as he faces an unanticipated challenge to his power by a man who threatens not just his throne but also the future of his nation. The review explores the ways in which the legacy of slavery and colonialism inform the distinct political and philosophical ideologies of the two main characters, and how inequality drives political thought.

Western Organization Of Resource Councils V. United States Bureau Of Land Management, Seth Sivinski Oct 2018

Western Organization Of Resource Councils V. United States Bureau Of Land Management, Seth Sivinski

Public Land & Resources Law Review

To what extent must the BLM analyze potential climate change impacts where millions of acres of public lands and federal mineral estates are being considered for coal development? Western Organization of Resource Councils v. BLM addresses this, setting the scope for NEPA-mandated environmental impact analysis and reasonable alternative consideration by federal agencies. Judge Brian Morris of the District of Montana eschewed BLM’s assertions that considering climate impacts would be speculative, instead requiring BLM to acknowledge scientific reality and include modern climate science in its NEPA review analysis.

(In)Visible Men On Campus: Campus Racial Climate And Subversive Black Masculinities At A Predominantly White Liberal Arts University, Quaylan Allen

Education Faculty Articles and Research

There is an emerging body of literature examining the academic success of Black men attending predominantly White colleges and universities, though less is known about Black college men’s experiences at liberal arts institutions. In this paper, I draw upon semi-structured and photovoice interview data from a study on Black male college students attending a predominantly White liberal arts institution in the USA. Specifically, I will present narrative and visual data of how Black college men perceive the campus racial climate and make sense of their (in)visibility at the university. Drawing upon poststructuralist theories of gender and critical race theory, I …

Physiological plasticity allows organisms to respond to diverse conditions. However, can being too plastic actually be detrimental? Malagasy common tenrecs, Tenrec ecaudatus, have many plesiomorphic traits and may represent a basal placental mammal. We established a laboratory population of T. ecaudatus and found extreme plasticity in thermoregulation and metabolism, a novel hibernation form, variable annual timing, and remarkable growth and reproductive biology. For instance, tenrec body temperature (Tb) may approximate ambient temperature to as low as 12°C even when tenrecs are fully active. Conversely, tenrecs can hibernate with Tb of 28°C. During the active season, oxygen consumption may vary 25-fold …

Dual Inhibition Of Bcl-2/Bcl-Xl And Xpo1 Is Synthetically Lethal In Glioblastoma Model Systems, Enyuan Shang, Yiru Zhang, Chang Shu, Chiaki Tsuge Ishida, Elena Bianchetti, Mike-Andrew Westhoff, Georg Karpel-Massler, Markus D. Siegelin

Publications and Research

XPO1 has recently emerged as a viable treatment target for solid malignancies, including glioblastoma (GBM), the most common primary malignant brain tumor in adults. However, given that tumors become commonly resistant to single treatments, the identification of combination therapies is critical. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that inhibition of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 family members and XPO1 are synthetically lethal. To this purpose, two clinically validated drug compounds, the BH3-mimetic, ABT263, and the XPO1 inhibitor, Selinexor, were used in preclinical GBM model systems. Our results show that inhibition of XPO1 reduces cellular viability in glioblastoma cell cultures. Moreover, addition of ABT263 significantly …

Coitus-Free Sexual Transmission Of Zika Virus In A Mouse Model, Chad S. Clancy, Arnaud J. Van Wettere, John D. Morrey, Justin G. Julander

Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

Zika virus (ZIKV) is an arboviral infection that may be sexually transmitted. The present study aims to determine if accessory sex glands are a potential source of infectious virus and important in sexual transmission. Male interferon type I receptor knockout (Ifnar−/−) mice were challenged subcutaneously with a Puerto Rican ZIKV isolate. Reproductive tissues were harvested seven days after viral challenge and artificial insemination fluid derived from epididymis or homogenized accessory sex glands (seminal plasma) was obtained. Naïve interferon type I and II receptor knockout (AG129) females were pretreated with progesterone, and inoculated intravaginally with either epididymal flush or …

Bottom trawlers land around 19 million tons of fish and invertebrates annually, almost one-quarter of wild marine landings. The extent of bottom trawling footprint (seabed area trawled at least once in a specified region and time period) is often contested but poorly described. We quantify footprints using high-resolution satellite vessel monitoring system (VMS) and logbook data on 24 continental shelves and slopes to 1,000-m depth over at least 2 years. Trawling footprint varied markedly among regions: from < 10 % of seabed area in Australian and New Zealand waters, the Aleutian Islands, East Bering Sea, South Chile, and Gulf of Alaska to > 50% in some European seas. Overall, 14 % of the 7.8 million-km2 study area was trawled, and 86% was not trawled. Trawling activity …

Role Of Genes In Obesity, Hanna Mathew, Mir Saleem Oct 2018

Role Of Genes In Obesity, Hanna Mathew, Mir Saleem

Biology Faculty Articles

Obesity is the outcome of an extreme difference between the energy intake and the energy expended, which leads to severe weight gain. The two main factors of obesity are environmental influences and genetics, but the extent of the genetic contribution to obesity continues to be unknown. Multiple studies using different tools have been used to support the significance of the genetic influence on obesity, such as twin and adoption studies, race/ethnicity, and mouse models. The use of mouse models has allowed for the greatest expansion of knowledge on the genetics behind obesity, and advancements continue to be made to this …

The Tetraspanin Cd82 Regulates Hematopoietic Stem Cell Fitness And Bone Marrow Retention, Chelsea Alyssa Kimiko Saito-Reis Oct 2018

The Tetraspanin Cd82 Regulates Hematopoietic Stem Cell Fitness And Bone Marrow Retention, Chelsea Alyssa Kimiko Saito-Reis

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

The maintenance of the hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) population is critical to sustaining the adult blood and immune system throughout an organism’s lifespan. The bone marrow microenvironment plays a key role in the regulation of HSPC maintenance and functions. Previous work from our lab has identified the tetraspanin CD82 as an important modulator of HSPC interactions with the bone marrow niche. However, the mechanisms as to how CD82 contributes to the maintenance, trafficking and retention of HSPCs with the niche remained unclear. First, we investigated how CD82 promotes HSPC quiescence, homing and engraftment using a global CD82 knock …

Biology Faculty Publications

The family Rivulidae is the fourth most diverse clade of Neotropical fishes. Together with some genera of the related African family Nothobranchiidae, many rivulids exhibit a characteristic annual life cycle, with diapausing eggs and delayed embryonic development, which allows them to survive in the challenging seasonal ponds that they inhabit. Rivulidae also includes two species known as the only the self-fertilizing vertebrates and some species with internal fertilization. The first goal of this article is to review the systematics of the family considering phylogenetic relationships and synapomorphies of subfamilial clades, thus unifying information that is dispersed throughout the literature. From …
