Re-Playing Maimonides’ Codes: Designing Games To Teach Religious Legal Systems, Owen Gottlieb
Re-Playing Maimonides’ Codes: Designing Games To Teach Religious Legal Systems, Owen Gottlieb
Articles
Lost & Found is a game series, created at the Initiative for
Religion, Culture, and Policy at the Rochester Institute of
Technology MAGIC Center.1 The series teaches medieval
religious legal systems. This article uses the first two games
of the series as a case study to explore a particular set of
processes to conceive, design, and develop games for learning.
It includes the background leading to the author's work
in games and teaching religion, and the specific context for
the Lost & Found series. It discusses the rationale behind
working to teach religious legal systems more broadly, then
discuss the …
Common Sense And Common Nonsense: A Conversation About Mental Attitudes, Science, And Society, Daniel S. Levine
Common Sense And Common Nonsense: A Conversation About Mental Attitudes, Science, And Society, Daniel S. Levine
Psychology Faculty Publications - Archive
Daniel S. Levine's Common Sense and Common Nonsense observes human decision making, ethics, and social organization as illuminated by the scientific disciplines of neural network theory, neuroscience, experimental psychology, and dynamical systems theory. It is a book whose aim is advocacy as well as research. Its goal is to use an understanding of our brains and minds to better operationalize Aldous Huxley's admonition to "try to be a little kinder." It wanders over examples from sociology, politics, economics, religion, literature, and many other fields but looks at all as examples of a few common themes. The "common nonsense" of the …

White-Nose Syndrome Is Associated With Increased Replication Of A Naturally Persisting Coronaviruses In Bats, Christina M. Davy, Michael E. Donaldson, Sonu Sobudhi
KIP Articles
Spillover of viruses from bats to other animals may be associated with increased contact between them, as well as increased shedding of viruses by bats. Here, we tested the prediction that little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) co-infected with the M. lucifugus coronavirus (Myl-CoV) and with Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd), the fungus that causes bat white-nose syndrome (WNS), exhibit different disease severity, viral shedding and molecular responses than bats infected with only Myl-CoV or only P. destructans. We took advantage of the natural persistence of Myl-CoV in bats that were experimentally inoculated with P. destructans in a previous study. Here, we show …

Germ Cell Depletion Influenced Neuromuscular, Sensory, Renal And Metabolic Function In Postreproductive Female Mice, Tracy L. Habermehl, Kate C. Parkinson, Jeffrey B. Mason
Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications
Numerous observations suggest a relationship between reproduction and health. This relationship has been difficult to define, particularly in mammals. At menopause, germ cell-diminished ovaries are relatively senescent. In mice, replacement of these senescent ovaries with young, actively cycling ovaries significantly increased life and health span in recipients. While we were successful in extending life and health span in postreproductive females, these experiments were not designed to distinguish between the contributions of ovarian hormones from actively cycling germ cells and the somatic tissue components of the ovaries. In the current study, we used 4-vinylcyclohexene diepoxide to deplete ovarian germ cells in …

Biological control, a globally-important ecosystem service, can provide long-term and broad-scale suppression of invasive pests, weeds and pathogens in natural, urban and agricultural environments. Following (few) historic cases that led to sizeable environmental up-sets, the discipline of arthropod biological control has—over the past decades—evolved and matured. Now, by deliberately taking into account the ecological risks associated with the planned introduction of insect natural enemies, immense environmental and societal benefits can be gained. In this study, we document and analyze a successful case of biological control against the cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus manihoti (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) which invaded Southeast Asia in 2008, where …

The System Individualized Principles Of Management Of Technologies Of Field Husbandry., V.A Korolev, A.M Bashilov, Z.O Eshmuradov
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
The system and organized, local individualized agrotechnologies provide on the land ground divided into priority zones, the simultaneous parallel and interconnected performance of a complex of technological operations on production of crop production: operations on preparation of seeds of an agriculture, cultivation of seedling, laying of seedling to the soil, to cultivation of an agriculture, stimulation of her development. Interaction between the carried-out processes is carried out in real time with a possibility of necessary corrections of processes during their performance. A considerable part of technological operations realize without rendering negative impacts on an agriculture, the soil and the environment, …

Principles Of Management Of Agrotechnological Systems., V.A Korolev, A.M Bashilov, V.N Toporkov, Z.O Eshmurodov
Chemical Technology, Control and Management
Modern approaches to the solution of problems of increase in the outputs and quality, reduction of cost of agricultural production, negative impacts of agropro-technologies on the environment provide consideration of transformation of energy in agroprocesses as a part of uniform agrotechnological systems. Creation of a control system of devices of different function and application on the basis of modular model doesn't demand development of difficult algorithms and schemes of management. Application of modular models, use in them standard mathematical dependences for forecasting of changes of characteristics of processes and management significantly simplifies technical realization of elements of a technogenic part …

Raman Spectroscopy Detects Biochemical Changes Due To Different Cell Culture Environments In Live Cells In Vitro, Mahmoud Gargotti, Esen Efeoglu, Hugh Byrne, Alan Casey
Articles
The in vitro cell culture environment can impact on cell biochemistry and cell cycle. The manifestation of such substrate-induced changes in cell cycle in the Raman microspectroscopic profiles of cell cultures is investigated at the level of nucleolus, nucleus and cytoplasm. HeLa immortalised human cervical cells and HaCaT dermal cells were cultured on three different substrates, conventional polystyrene cell culture dishes, CaF2 slides as a commonly used Raman substrate, and glass slides coated with Collagen Rat Tail, as a mimic of the extra cellular matrix (ECM) environment. A cell cycle study, based on percentage DNA content, as determined using Propidium …
