Incentivizing Transparency: Agricultural Benefit Corporations To Improve Consumer Trust, Kathryn Smith
Incentivizing Transparency: Agricultural Benefit Corporations To Improve Consumer Trust, Kathryn Smith
San Diego Law Review
In the face of inadequate, often abysmal agricultural practices and laws that enable them, producers who provide the social good of transparency should receive a benefit. Amidst the debate that all benefit corporations should qualify for special tax treatment, this Comment proposes the development of a federal benefit corporation class offering special tax treatment to worthy agricultural producers. By reallocating current agricultural subsidies, Congress can feasibly correct the agricultural industry’s failure to adequately inform consumers.
Regeneration And Expansion Of Quercus Tomentella (Island Oak) Groves On Santa Rosa Island, Jay Woolsey, Cause Hanna, Kathryn Mceachern, Sean Anderson, Brett D. Hartman
Regeneration And Expansion Of Quercus Tomentella (Island Oak) Groves On Santa Rosa Island, Jay Woolsey, Cause Hanna, Kathryn Mceachern, Sean Anderson, Brett D. Hartman
Western North American Naturalist
Quercus tomentella (island oak) is an endemic species that plays a key functional role in Channel Island ecosystems. Growing in groves on highland ridges, Q. tomentella captures fog and increases water inputs, stabilizes soils, and provides habitat for flora and fauna. This cloud forest system has been impacted by a long history of ranching, and restoration efforts are underway that include erosion control, leaf litter capture, fog capture, and reforestation. To inform retoration efforts, we explored tree regeneration and the potential for Q. tomentella grove expansion on Santa Rosa Island. We delineated current and historic groves at Black Mountain by …
Assessing Effects Of Climate Change On Access To Ecosystem Services In Rural Alaska, Helen S. Cold
Assessing Effects Of Climate Change On Access To Ecosystem Services In Rural Alaska, Helen S. Cold
Biological Sciences
Across the planet, climate change is altering the way human societies interact with the environment. Amplified climate change at high latitudes is significantly altering the structure and function of ecosystems, creating challenges and necessitating adaptation by societies in the region that depend on local ecosystem services for their livelihoods. Rural communities in Interior Alaska rely on plants and animals for food, clothing, fuel and shelter. Previous research suggests that climate-induced changes in environmental conditions are challenging the abilities of rural residents to travel across the land and access local resources, but detailed information on the nature and effect of specific …
Morphological And Phenological Responses Of Butterflies To Seasonal Temperature Increase In Alaska, Kathryn Margaret Daly
Morphological And Phenological Responses Of Butterflies To Seasonal Temperature Increase In Alaska, Kathryn Margaret Daly
Biological Sciences
Climate is changing rapidly at high latitudes, and the responses of insects provide early indications of the impacts these changes have on biota. Butterflies (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) are among the best-known Subarctic and Arctic insects, and research in Greenland has revealed significant declines in butterfly body sizes along with advances in the timing of their first flights in spring. These changes are ecologically significant because smaller body sizes can lead to reduced fecundity in butterflies, and earlier adult emergence can have detrimental effects across trophic levels because Lepidoptera are an important food resource for birds and mammals. The primary goal of …

Studies Assessing Insulin Signaling Dependent Neuronal Morphology And Novel Animal Sorting Methods In A C. Elegans Model, Skyler C. Hunter
Biological Sciences
The purpose of this work is two-part. The primary goal of this thesis is to identify a list of significant target insulin-like peptides (ILPs) that influence the maintenance of neuronal morphology in an aged animal model of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) and determine whether or not morphological changes have bearing on neuronal function. The second goal is to address and devise a solution for a common laboratory difficulty encountered within the research community, difficulty maintaining large age-synchronous populations of the model organism, C. elegans. Chapter 1 discusses the importance of insulin signaling and how it pertains to the morphology of …

A Classroom Activity For Teaching Kohlberg’S Theory Of Moral Development, Cheryl L. Carmichael, Anna M. Schwartz, Maureen Coyle, Matthew H. Goldberg
A Classroom Activity For Teaching Kohlberg’S Theory Of Moral Development, Cheryl L. Carmichael, Anna M. Schwartz, Maureen Coyle, Matthew H. Goldberg
Publications and Research
In two studies, we demonstrate an engaging classroom activity that facilitates student learning about Kohlberg’s theory of moral development by using digital resources to foster active, experiential learning. In addition to hearing a standard lecture about moral development, students watched a video of a morally provocative incident, then worked in small groups to classify user comments posted in response to the video according to Kohlberg’s six stages. Students in both studies found the activity enjoyable and useful. Moreover, students’ scores on a moral development quiz improved after completing the activity (Study 1), and students who completed the activity in addition …

Capstones
They are the darlings of conservative America, the prophets of the new reactionary movement, the iconoclasts and the patron saints of the free speech, revered by "the basket of deplorables" and castigated by liberal America for being cheap shot opportunists whose goal is to crusade against the values that Americans hold most dear. Although Donald Trump's presidency galvanized a big chunk of artists around the resistance movement, a small group of right-wing artists, who were operating surreptitiously, are gaining momentum.

The Effects Of Parathyroid Hormone And Bisphosphonate On The Cartilage And Subchondral Bone Of The Temporomandibular Joint, Alexandro De Araujo Lima
The Effects Of Parathyroid Hormone And Bisphosphonate On The Cartilage And Subchondral Bone Of The Temporomandibular Joint, Alexandro De Araujo Lima
Master's Theses
Introduction:Parathyroid hormone increases bone strength primarily by stimulating bone formation, whereas Bisphosphonate, an antiresorptive drug, reduce bone resorption by blocking osteoclast activity. Here we examined the effects of alendronate (ALN), a type of bisphosphonate, and we also examine the effects of parathyroid hormone (PTH), which has an anabolic effect and increases bone remodeling when treated intermittently (I-PTH). I-PTH treatment leads to increased bone volume fraction, tissue density and trabecular thickness of the subchondral bone. I-PTH treatment also increases proteoglycan synthesis with a concomitant increase in mineralization of the Mandibular Condyle Cartilage (MCC). We hypothesize that combined treatment of I-PTH …
Low Plasma Hdl Cholesterol Is Associated With Greater Risk For Cardiovascular Disease In Subjects With Metabolic Syndrome, Hana M. Alyousef
Low Plasma Hdl Cholesterol Is Associated With Greater Risk For Cardiovascular Disease In Subjects With Metabolic Syndrome, Hana M. Alyousef
Master's Theses
Low plasma HDL cholesterol (HDL-c) has been recognized as a biomarker of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes. Also, low HDL-c is one of the characteristics of metabolic syndrome (MetS).
Objective: To assess whether low HDL-c and/or low HDL functionality are associated with higher risk for CVD in subjects classified with MetS.
Methods: Forty-subjects with MetS (11 men /29 women, 52.4 ± 9.5 years participated in the study. Anthropometric data [weight, height, BMI, waist circumference (WC), blood pressure (BP)], fasting plasma biomarkers [lipids, glucose, liver enzymes: alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), plasma insulin, and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c)], biomarkers of …
Groundwater Model Parameter Estimation With Simultaneous And Sequential Use Of Hydraulic Head And Travel Time Measurements, Mohsen Kheirabadi
Groundwater Model Parameter Estimation With Simultaneous And Sequential Use Of Hydraulic Head And Travel Time Measurements, Mohsen Kheirabadi
Master's Theses
This study is an effort to investigate two parameter estimation approaches in groundwater modeling, sequential and combined. Most researches imply that simultaneous use of flow and transport observations would be more beneficial in parameter estimation, however some other researchers rise questions about this approach. They believe due to the differing geological properties of aquifers and consequently differing mathematical basis of groundwater flow compared to transport simultaneous use of different observations might not be useful in every cases. Despite the fact that parameter estimation or inverse modeling is not a new method in groundwater modeling, most modelers tend to use forward …
Shakespeare's Adaption Of Cinthio's "Un Capitano Moro" Into Othello, Cleveland A. Williams
Shakespeare's Adaption Of Cinthio's "Un Capitano Moro" Into Othello, Cleveland A. Williams
Master's Theses
Abstract
William Shakespeare’s Othello is an adaptation of Giovanni Battista Giraldi Cinthio’s “Un Capitano Moro,” that was written in 1565; taken from his novella collection ‘Gli Hecatommithi,’ Decad.III., Novella 7. Cinthio’s story of the Moor of Venice fits the classification of the Italian novellas which grew to prominence during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries due to the popularity of Boccaccio’s Decameron.
Shakespeare liberated this story from its state of oblivion and utilized it as his framework for Othello; as the plot exposes some of the most intricate of human emotions – love, hate and jealousy, which are all …
High-Resolution Profiling Of Soil Moisture Using Flat Thin Mm-Sized Soil Moisture Sensors (Msmss), Wangchi Zhou
High-Resolution Profiling Of Soil Moisture Using Flat Thin Mm-Sized Soil Moisture Sensors (Msmss), Wangchi Zhou
Master's Theses
This MS thesis research has focused on the profiling feasibility of flat thin mm-sized soil moisture sensor (termed as MSMS) through field tests at UConn farm and Ethiopia farms. By etching on gold compact disc (CD), MSMS has the distinct merits of small size (mm-carbon interdigitated with 0.5 mm thickness), high accuracy of soil moisture measurement (10 kΩ-10 MΩ for 10%-50% soil moisture), good correlation of resistance readings with soil moisture, long stability (stable at least for half a year in lab tests) and easy fabrication (sensor), and low cost (

Lords from the Desert
This work explores a reality that is little talked about: how the most prestigious pre-Columbian art exhibits in the United States hide a murky origin. From looting of temples to illicit art trafficking, to smuggling and collectors’ affairs, the pieces gain value in proportion to the social prestige of their owner. Along the way, the most important is lost: research that provides context and allows us to know history. The First World wins a seductive, but simplistic story. The Third World, from which all these cultures emerge, loses patrimony and possibilities of understanding themselves. A pair …

Life History And Habitat Of The Rare Patch-Nosed Salamander (Urspelerpes Brucei), Carlos D. Camp, Tyler L. Brock, Todd W. Pierson, Joseph Milanovich, John C. Maerz
Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
We examined the life history and habitat characteristics for the Patch-nosed Salamander, Urspelerpes brucei. Body-size measurements of individuals captured using litter bags and by hand from 2008 to 2010 indicated that the larval period lasts at least 2 y, salamanders attain reproductive maturity at or shortly after metamorphosis, and adults have very little variation in body size. Occupied streams are characterized by small size, little water, and narrow, steep-walled ravines. Within occupied streams, larval capture rate was significantly and negatively related to mean water depth, underscoring the importance of protecting headwaters. We hypothesize that the only known population of U. …
Masks: A New Face For The Theatre, Alexi Michael Siegel
Masks: A New Face For The Theatre, Alexi Michael Siegel
James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)
This study seeks to reimagine and reinvigorate modern theatre’s relationship with mask work through text-based historical research and practice-based artistic research. It focuses on three ancient mask traditions: pre- and early Hellenistic Greek theatre, Japanese Noh theatre, and Nigerian Egungun masquerades. Research on these mask traditions and recent masked productions informed the development and staging of a masked performance of Charles Mee’s Life is a Dream. The production featured sections for each of the ancient masking styles and a final section that explored masks in a contemporary theatrical style. As a whole, this creative project pulls masks out of …

Age Troubles, Emotional Labor, And Roz Chast’S Can’T We Talk About Something More Pleasant?, Shu-Li Chang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In the article "Age Troubles, Emotional Labor, and Roz Chast’s Can’t We Talk about Something More Pleasant?," Shu-li Chang examines the medium—comics—Roz Chast uses to give expressions to the emotional labor involved in caregiving. The first section reads closely the Introduction of Chast’s memoir to set the stage for a critical engagement with Chast’s innovative use of comics to critique the discourse of positive aging. The next section examines the double movement of the emotional labor of caregiving: what moves the caregiving subject and how she is moved into thought. The article concludes by proposing, in the final section, …
Hardship And Healing Through The Lens Of Cultural Translation In Peter Hessler’S Travel Memoir River Town, Shang Wu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
The article “Hardship and Healing through the Lens of Cultural Translation in Peter Hessler’s Travel Memoir River Town” looks into the autobiographical dimension of Hessler’s account of his two-year stay as a Peace Corps teacher in Fuling, a remote town in southwestern China. Taking the two senses of cultural translation, one in anthropology and one in cultural studies, as two descriptive aspects, it illustrates the hardship Hessler confronted and his healing strategies. Faced with etiquette and language issues as well as the power relation between China and America and its consequent stereotypes in cross-cultural encounters, Hessler gazed back to …
Shakespeare's Henry Vi And Depression, Cindy Chopoidalo
Shakespeare's Henry Vi And Depression, Cindy Chopoidalo
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Shakespeare’s Henry VI and Depression”, Cindy Chopoidalo discusses Shakespeare’s Henry VI plays not only as his first significant explorations of the tragic consequences of war and the price of ambition, but also as his first major treatment of a character who, in both fiction and reality, suffered from what has sometimes been described as severe clinical depression and what would have been known in Shakespeare’s time as melancholy. In Shakespeare’s Henry VI, as well as in his historical inspiration, we see an early counterpart of his later characters who have been linked to melancholy or depression, such …

Concentrations of airborne chemical and biological agents from a hazardous release are not spread uniformly. Instead, there are regions of higher concentration, in part due to local atmospheric flow conditions which can attract agents. We equipped a ground station and two rotary-wing unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) with ultrasonic anemometers. Flights reported here were conducted 10 to 15 m above ground level (AGL) at the Leach Airfield in the San Luis Valley, Colorado as part of the Lower Atmospheric Process Studies at Elevation—a Remotely-Piloted Aircraft Team Experiment (LAPSE-RATE) campaign in 2018. The ultrasonic anemometers were used to collect simultaneous measurements of …

Riverbank Filtration Impacts On Post Disinfection Water Quality In Small Systems—A Case Study From Auburn And Nebraska City, Nebraska, Matteo D'Alessio, Bruce Dvorak, Chittaranjan Ray
Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications
Small water systems can experience a fluctuating quality of water in the distribution system after disinfection. As chlorine is the most common disinfectant for small systems, the occurrence of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) represents a common problem for these systems. Riverbank filtration (RBF) can be a valuable solution for small communities located on riverbanks. The objectives of this study were to evaluate (i) the improvements in water quality at two selected RBF systems, and (ii) the potential lower concentrations of DBPs, in particular, trihalomethanes (THMs), in small systems that use RBF. Two small communities in Nebraska, Auburn and Nebraska City, using …

Theses and Dissertations from 2018
Video games exploded in popularity in the 80s and have been a staple in many people’s lives since. Because video games are popular and different, critics tend to ignore them beyond simple analysis like the sexist portrayal of women. Video games, like films, can be read and analyzed using different methods of theory. This is evident in the similarities in Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street and FromSoftware’s Bloodborne. Both media feature overtly gendered imagery and spaces, the monstrousness of women, the blurring of dreams and reality, and Gothic elements that tie them together. Though Bloodborne also manages to …

A Decade Of Change: A Case Study Of Regulatory Compliance Costs In The Produce Industry, Lynn Hamilton, Michael Mccullough
Agribusiness
Regulatory pressure is a source of increasing concern to the California agricultural industry. In the decade since 2006, new rules at both the state and federal levels have imposed significantly higher regulatory burdens on growers, specifically with respect to food safety, water quality, labor wages, air quality; and worker health and safety. Additional regulations are in process as the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act is developed at the local levels for implementation in 2022, and minimum wage and overtime laws for farmworkers are phased in, also by 2022.
Previous studies regarding the regulatory environment in California have quantified the total cost …
Improving Breastfeeding In Rural Tanzania Using Bardach’S Policy Analysis Methodology, Katherine Skiff
Improving Breastfeeding In Rural Tanzania Using Bardach’S Policy Analysis Methodology, Katherine Skiff
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Clinical Projects, 2016-2019
Appropriate breastfeeding has the potential to have the broadest impact on childhood survival in children under five years (U5Y) compared to all other preventive interventions. The World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) recommend that all facilities providing maternal services and newborn care have a written policy addressing breastfeeding that is routinely disseminated to staff. Shirati hospital, in rural Tanzania, does not have a breastfeeding policy. Bardach’s 8-Fold Pathway for policy analysis methodology (adapted by Collins for health policy) was used to evaluate three promising breastfeeding policies to improve compliance with this recommendation. They include …

Maroon Archaeology Beyond The Americas: A View From Kenya, Lydia Wilson Marshall
Maroon Archaeology Beyond The Americas: A View From Kenya, Lydia Wilson Marshall
Sociology & Anthropology Faculty publications
Archaeological research on Maroons—that is, runaway slaves—has been largely confined to the Americas. This essay advocates a more global approach. It specifically uses two runaway slave communities in 19th-century coastal Kenya to rethink prominent interpretive themes in the field, including “Africanisms,” Maroons’ connections to indigenous groups, and Maroon group cohesion and identity. This article’s analysis demonstrates that the comparisons enabled by a more globalized perspective benefit the field. Instead of eliding historical and cultural context, these comparisons support the development of more localized and historically specific understandings of individual runaway slave communities both in Kenya and throughout the New World.
