A traditional childrearing practice—“gahvora” cradling—in Tajikistan and other parts of Central Asia purportedly restricts movement of infants’ body and limbs. However, the practice has been documented only informally in anecdotal reports. Thus, this study had two research questions: (1) To what extent are infants’ movements restricted in the gahvora? (2) How is time in the gahvora distributed over a 24-hour day in infants from 1–24 months of age? To answer these questions, we video-recorded 146 mothers cradling their infants and interviewed them using 24-hour time diaries to determine the distribution of time infants spent in the gahvora within a day …

Understanding The Effects Of Both Cd14-Mediated Innate Immunity And Device/Tissue Mechanical Mismatch In The Neuroinflammatory Response To Intracortical Microelectrodes, Hillary W. Bedell, Sydney S. Song, Xujia Li, Emily Molinich, Shushen Lin, Andrew J. Shoffstall, Jeffrey R. Capadona Oct 2018

Understanding The Effects Of Both Cd14-Mediated Innate Immunity And Device/Tissue Mechanical Mismatch In The Neuroinflammatory Response To Intracortical Microelectrodes, Hillary W. Bedell, Sydney S. Song, Xujia Li, Emily Molinich, Shushen Lin, Andrew J. Shoffstall, Jeffrey R. Capadona

Faculty Scholarship

Intracortical microelectrodes record neuronal activity of individual neurons within the brain, which can be used to bridge communication between the biological system and computer hardware for both research and rehabilitation purposes. However, long-term consistent neural recordings are difficult to achieve, in large part due to the neuroinflammatory tissue response to the microelectrodes. Prior studies have identified many factors that may contribute to the neuroinflammatory response to intracortical microelectrodes. Unfortunately, each proposed mechanism for the prolonged neuroinflammatory response has been investigated independently, while it is clear that mechanisms can overlap and be difficult to isolate. Therefore, we aimed to determine whether …

Nutrition Counseling For Transgender Individuals On Hormone Replacement Therapy, Sara Elizabeth Zellers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) need to understand the unique needs of the transgender population and be prepared to participate in multi-disciplinary groups to help those transitioning maintain health and well-being. Currently, no studies examine a nutritional intervention specifically with this population. The purpose of this survey was to determine if RDNs are consulted for nutritional counseling either before or during hormone replacement therapy. An anonymous, online survey invitation letter was distributed to the transgender community. It was also posted to a support group on Facebook. Participants had to be over 18 years old, live in the United States, self-identify as …

This study aimed to investigate the effect of instructional design of multi-media on reducing cognitive load and the development of scientific concepts among primary school deaf students. It combined the descriptive and quasi-experimental design using an extension of pre-test and post-test experimental-control group design with three groups: an experimental group that was taught the "solar system, stars and galaxies" modules using multimedia software based on the principles of cognitive load theory; a second experimental group was taught the same content using multimedia software but was not based on the principles of cognitive load theory; and a control group that was …

Managing Risk In Grazing Operations, Christopher D. Teutsch, Kenneth H. Burdine Oct 2018

Managing Risk In Grazing Operations, Christopher D. Teutsch, Kenneth H. Burdine

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Risk is an inherent part of agricultural production systems. Crane and coworkers (2013) identified five primary areas of risk in grazing operations: 1) MARKETING risk, 2) PRODUCTION risk, 3) LEGAL risk, 4) HUMAN risk, and FINANCIAL risk. These types of risk are described in the accompanying publication entitled “Controlling Risk in Grazing-Based Production Systems” by J. Parsons. This article will discuss the risk associated with “production” in grazing systems, focusing specifically on managing drought in grass based production operations.

The Influence Of Body Mass Index On Survival And Length Of Stay In Patients With Septic Shock, Yasir Jawaid, Waseem Ahmed, Damir Kusmic, Aman Ajmeri, Kanaan Mansoor, Cristie Mannino, Thomas Judge, Larry E. Carter, Akash V. Ajmera

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Background: Obesity is one of the most widespread epidemics of our time. In fact, currently 65.7% of US adults age 20 and older are overweight, while 30.6% are obese. It has been well-established that obesity has numerous adverse effects on long-term health, however the specific effect on patients treated for sepsis and septic shock is unclear. Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of total body fat content and surrogate marker for obesity. In our study, we aimed to identify if BMI was an independent risk factor for poor survival or increased length of stay (LOS) in patients with sepsis. …

A Love-Hate Relationship: Personal Narratives Of Pride And Shame As Patriotic Affects, Mark E. Helmsing

Occasional Paper Series

The Office of Alumni Relations for George Mason University—in Fairfax, Virginia, where I teach—is located centrally on the campus. The exterior of the building faces a busy walkway, displaying in vinyl lettering the official slogan of the university’s alumni association: “once a Patriot, always a Patriot.” This motto refers to the university’s Patriot mascot and implies that once a person joins the university as a student, that person becomes a Patriot and will forever remain a Patriot, which, the alumni office presumably hopes, will result in feelings of goodwill that prompt generous financial contributions from alumni donors.

In considering the …

“That's Quite A Tune”: An Interview With Bruce Springsteen, Mark T. Kissling

Occasional Paper Series

Greetings from State College, Pennsylvania.

My name is Mark Kissling. I am an assistant professor of education at Penn State University. I’m also the guest editor of the Bank Street Occasional Papers Series issue #40 titled, “Am I Patriotic?” The purpose of the issue is to complicate how we think about and enact patriotism, with a particular focus on how teachers teach and students learn about patriotism.

So how does this relate to Bruce Springsteen and the interview that you’re about to hear?

In mid-December of 2008, I spent two days at the Woody Guthrie Archives—then in New York City, …

Turning Grass Into Cash With Small Ruminants, Kenneth Andries Oct 2018

Turning Grass Into Cash With Small Ruminants, Kenneth Andries

Kentucky Grazing Conference

As agriculture continues to change, it is important to consider sustainability before starting or expanding any enterprise. One critical factor in any animal agriculture enterprise is controlling feeding costs. Most research indicates feeding is the largest expenses in any livestock enterprise. However, nutrition is critical to overall productivity and the income of the enterprise. Because of this, producers need to find ways to improve nutrient availability while minimizing costs to optimize production and profitability for their livestock enterprise.

Considerations For Making A Profit With Stocker Cattle, Jeff Lehmkuhler Oct 2018

Considerations For Making A Profit With Stocker Cattle, Jeff Lehmkuhler

Kentucky Grazing Conference

The southeast is home to more than 7.3 million beef cows (USDA 2018). At an estimated 80% weaning rate and 20% heifer retention, the southeast region would be expected to produce more than 4.6 million feeder calves that would go to market in 2018. The cow-calf industry in the region provides an opportunity for the stocker and backgrounding operations to co-exist. Much of the land in the region is best suited for forage and pasture production, which at the current moment, provides a low cost feed for adding pounds to light weight feeder cattle. Yet, the stocker and backgrounding segments …

Measuring Profitability In Grazing Operations, Kenneth H. Burdine Oct 2018

Measuring Profitability In Grazing Operations, Kenneth H. Burdine

Kentucky Grazing Conference

When producers make investments in extending their grazing season, they do so in order to obtain an economic benefit. These benefits usually include a reduction in the number of days that stored feed (typically hay) is fed, an increase in carry capacity or stocking rate, or an increase in production level (rates of gain, weaning weights, etc). While all of these are potential benefits of improved grazing systems, a reduction in winter feeding days is often the simplest way to start. When the grazing season is extended, winter feeding days are reduced, and this cost savings can be weighed against …

Cooking With Rocks The Hopewell Way: Experimenting With Earth Oven Efficiency, Tessa R. Horn Oct 2018

Cooking With Rocks The Hopewell Way: Experimenting With Earth Oven Efficiency, Tessa R. Horn

Proceedings of GREAT Day

My research generates data to show which attributes make an earth oven successful and efficient. To answer this question, I built earth ovens of different size, shape, and depth. Athermocouple was used to monitor the temperatures throughout each cooking event. This allowed me to compare the effectiveness of the different ovens using temperature vs. time graphs. The size of the ovens and the quantity of rocks used were extrapolated from archaeological data from three Ohio Hopewell habitation sites: Balthaser Home, Brown’s Bottom #1, and Lady’s Run. By recreating earth ovens of varying shapes, sizes, and depths, I attempt to explain how …

Mitochondrial Replacement Therapy: How A Government For The People, Failed The People, Jeffery Mark Sauer Oct 2018

Mitochondrial Replacement Therapy: How A Government For The People, Failed The People, Jeffery Mark Sauer

University of Miami Law Review

Despite having the potential to significantly reduce the passage of many lethal diseases and devastating birth defects, mitochondrial replacement therapy—a controversial medical procedure in which mitochondrial RNA from a healthy female replaces the mitochondrial RNA from the intended mother in vitro—will have no place in the United States anytime soon. Under the guise of purported safety concerns and ethical dilemmas, the Republican Congress used its “power of the purse” to halt any and all research furthering mitochondrial replacement therapy, notwithstanding the fact that many leaders in the medical community have advocated for further research. Several developed countries have already implemented …

Forecast Or Fall: Prediction's Importance To Postural Control, Chris J. Dakin, David A.E. Bolton

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

To interact successfully with an uncertain environment, organisms must be able to respond to both unanticipated and anticipated events. For unanticipated events, organisms have evolved stereotyped motor behaviors mapped to the statistical regularities of the environment, which can be trigged by specific sensory stimuli. These 'reflexive' responses are more or less hardwired to prevent falls and represent, maybe, the best available solution to maintaining posture given limited available time and information. With the gift of foresight, however, motor behaviors can be tuned or prepared in advance, improving the ability of the organism to compensate for, and interact with, the changing …

Energy For Metropolis, Nadia B. Ahmad Oct 2018

Energy For Metropolis, Nadia B. Ahmad

University of Miami Law Review

Throughout the past decade, municipal governments have steadily increased climate change adaptation measures, natural resource conservation programs, and clean energy initiatives. Through energy efficiency measures and renewable energy mandates, cities are poised to make significant impacts in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the mitigation of climate risks in the clean energy transition. This Article addresses municipal directives of advanced biofuels as an integral part of the clean energy transition. Existing laws and policies have critical design flaws. Specifically, the Renewable Fuel Standard (“RFS”) has proven to be burdensome and complex, producing more unintended consequences than desired outcomes. Problems …

Ground-Truthing Social Vulnerability Indices Of Alaska Fishing Communities, Anna Lavoie, Kim Sparks, Stephen Kasperski, Amber Himes-Cornell, Kristin Hoelting, Conor Maguire

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Community vulnerability is increasingly evaluated through quantitative social indices, typically developed using secondary data sources rather than primary data collection. It is necessary to understand the validity of these indices if they will be used to inform policy and decision making. This paper presents a ground-truthing effort to validate quantitative indices that characterize the well-being of Alaska fishing communities. We utilized ethnographic data collected from 13 representative communities and a capital assets framework to ground-truth the indices, in which qualitative ranks of vulnerability were compared against quantitative indices. The majority (73.8%) of ranks were in complete or moderate agreement and …

Mapping The Terrain: An Indonesian Business Perspective Of The Asean Economic Community, Marko S. Hermawan, Lena Choong

The South East Asian Journal of Management

Research Aims - This paper focuses on the institutions that the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) project will affect. By employing institutional logics theory, this study scrutinizes academics and business practitioners as institutions and the cultural context embedded within them. Methodology - A mixed method of newspaper data analysis and semi-structured interviews was used to obtain comprehensive data from both sources. Research findings - The findings suggest a definite orientation gap between business practitioners, associations, and academics—the three groups have less information and contributions compared with the government and association influences. This study concludes that more participation is needed from these …
